Steve Bruce is still in running for Wolves job

New bookies favourite Steve Bruce today dismissed weekend claims that he has withdrawn from the Wolves’ manager job race as it entered its second week.

The Molineux club now accept there is as much chance of an appointment after this weekend’s Newcastle game as before it – but one man definitely still in the running is the former Birmingham, Wigan and Sunderland boss.

For reasons not yet confirmed, it’s now gone distinctly cool on last week’s favourite Alan Curbishley succeeding Mick McCarthy but Bruce has let it be known he has not pulled himself out of the running.

He met with owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey on Friday in Cheshire, having travelled down from Newcastle for the interview.

Reports suggested that Wolves were only offering a short-term 13-game “keep us up and we’ll take it from there” deal and Bruce rejected the proposal because he felt a new manager could not hope to establish any authority with the players under such a brief.

But these claims, which were also repeated to explain a cooling in Curbishley’s interest, have been firmly denied at Molineux and by Bruce himself.

Moxey broke cover at the weekend as Wolves became increasingly exasperated at the speculation swirling around the vacancy much of which he described as “absolute rubbish.”

Cautioning fans to remain patient and insisting the club were proposing long-term contracts, he said Wolves were “about halfway through the process and it was going well.”

But more meetings, plus a round of second interviews, were being lined up – and Moxey admitted it was now uncertain that McCarthy’s successor would be in place by the time the team took on Newcastle on Saturday.

Moxey said: “I think we are just about on schedule to keep to what we said which was, if at all possible, that we’d like a new manager in before our away game to Newcastle United. We can’t be absolutely sure that will be the time frame but ideally that is what we want to do.”

Latest odds (from SkyBet):

Steve Bruce        4/7
Alan Curbishley    3/1
Ian Holloway        7/1
Lee Clark        14/1
Roy Keane        16/1
Rafa Benitez        16/1
Paolo Di Canio        33/1
Dave Jones        33/1

So we sack MM and haven’t a clue who we will be getting in! Great work by the board again, just like investing in the stadium before spending on playing staff. How can they even be concidering Bruce? Has a history of taking teams down.

The worst decision in Wolves history since the apalling sacking of the late great Stan Cullis in september 1964 is now looking increasingly like a knee-jerk reaction by people (Morgan & Moxey) who know not of what they are doing. The list of ‘candidates’ is truly frightening with only Curbishley being anywhere near good enough. Steve Bruce? Joke? Ince, Di Canio, Roy Keane!!!??? Enough to make any true Wolves supporter despair. Why sack the best manager we have had since Graham Turner – and the best ‘top flight’ manager we have had since Stan Cullis – and then turn to others not fit to clean Mick McCarthy’s chair let alone sit in it?

    Bring back Mick!!!

13/02/12 – We will definitely have a Manager in place for the Newcastle game that is why we made the decision to sack MM at that time.

20/02/12 – It’s as likely that we will not have a manager in place for the Newcvastle game as before it.

What a complete joke, who sack’s someone with no idea who they want to replace him, we may aswell have saved the squad the upheaval of changing the manager until they had the right person lined up. This is turning into a farce, does anyone else see Clipboard being in charge for the next 2 – 3 games then a second rate manager being put in place and Moxey saying well we tried to get so and so but they did not want the job, what the great offer of a job for 12 games with no longer term guarantees and not been able to bring their own number 2. I cant think why no one would want the job.

Good luck yo all involved..interviews are not easy processes..sometimes the best candidates dont interview well and the interviewers need the skills and insight to see beyond that and ask the right questions and aee beyond thire own limitations and prejudices.. I d rather have a quiet determined manager than one who can put on a show for an interview or the cameras..passion and desire do not have to be shouted from the treetops..as all teachers know ..the loudest kids are rarely the most focused or best performers….

If only we could keep the ball like that.

Actually find it funny reading posts on various sites of people claiming they know more than the average person about who we are looking at.

It doesnt take a genius to assume Curbishley and Bruce have been contacted but anything more than that is pure speculation. Take the Tweet from Curbs son saying he is still interested but feels Steve Morgan may go elsewhere. Yet the speculation has it down as he is no longer in the running……… ??? Talk about a slant on things.

Find something else to do guys for a few days as speculation is all it is and people slate Moxey and Morgans potential appointments, when they actually havnt made one yet. Strange.

Roy Keane being the only other one i’d even contemplate! Moxey and morgan really need to listen to the fans if they seriously do not want to damage revenue for next season cos the vast majority of wolves fans DO NOT want Steve Bruce as their manager and they will vote with their feet.

Please not Steve Bruce. He is no better than Mick, actually worse as he had a far bigger budget than mick, and did not have to buy bargain basement. It will be extremely difficult for whoever takes over to keep us up as Mick was dismissed too late.
So let’s think bigger than this. We are a well structured club, good fans and because of the planning of Mr Morgan, we have a bright future with the investment in the academy and backroon staff. Please remember where Hull, Portsmouth, Sheff Wed and Sheff United, Leeds and Bradford are now. So let’s think quality for once. I know we will have to be patient but I think, if we can get him, pay Chris Hughton a good wage as he has done brilliantly – and if we go down will make a good fist of getting us up. Alternatively, Ian holloway, lost his best players at tiny Blackpool and is now in the playoff zone. Please Mr Moxey’s and Morgan, don’t shop in the poundshop again, quality is always the best and will last longer.

Mick was hopeless as a manager and despite the fact that I don’t want anyone on that list particularly, any one of them can’t be any worse. The question is, are they any better?

The whole thing has descended into Farce which isn’t a surprise because in my opinion the club is badly run from top to bottom.

Moxey and Morgan are now in a right mess. They should of acted 18 months ago but they didn’t.

They should of used £16 million in investing in the team ,not on a stand, they haven’t.

The should scrap the compton part housing development and use the money again, to invest in the team, and they won’t.

One thing is very clear, Moxey has not got a club on anything football matters.

Would I want Mick back ? Not a chance in hell! He was hopeless and part of the problem.

So who to replace him? Well I suggested Paul Lambert 18 months ago, but he’s well and truely gone.. so, I would go for :

And yet despite that we are not cut adrift 10 points from safety and doomed – look at the table my friend and you will see that there are 5 clubs separated by just 2 points so its any 3 from 5. And to help our cause and get the edge over Bolton, Blackburn, Wigan & QPR what do we do? Sack our manager who was/is popular with the players and the majority of the fans – fact – without having a clue who to bring in and thus destablising our efforts to survive. Mick kept us up the last 2 seasons so knows what he is doing in such a situation. We also have to play 3 of the other 4 teams down there with us having only recently beaten the other one (QPR). Simple question really – would we stand a better chance of staying up with Mick in charge or with no-one/Bruce/Keane in charge? Anyone with a brain knows the answer to that. Ian Holloway – not a bad shout but good enough to be Wolves manager? Took Blackpool down remember.
Lee Clark – relative new kid on the block but his experience could exclude him but maybe worth a shot?
Roy Keane – would certainly roust the players and the slackers would be quickly gone but what about the results? Next please!
Rafa Benitez – Ruled himself out last week!
Paolo Di Canio – No thanks! No room for fascists at Molineux.
Dave Jones – Been there, done that!

With only 13 games to go, EVERY game is critical. Looks like the players are going to continue to be confused, demoralised and in limbo for another week, so any hope of a point or more at Newcastle now looks extremely faint. I had desperately hoped for an announcement this morning to inspire the players and coaching staff and prepare for Newcastle. Surely a week is long enough to appoint a manager who is presently out of work.

Are the Board clueless as to who to appoint? Is there a huge disagreement between Moxey and Morgan on who to appoint? Or are they negotiating with some club to determine compensation for taking a manager who is currently under contract?

Surely it has to be MM for the England job. 1. He is English by place of birth.
    2. He has international experience, including his decent spell with RoI.
    3. He has experience of qualifying for, and participating in a major international tournament.
    4. He will not suffer over-inflated egos, as he showed with sending Roy Keane home.
    5. He is used to unfair abuse from fans.
    6. He is available, so the FA will not have to pay compensation to any club.
    7. He knows how to lose penalty shoot-outs (to Spain in 2002).
    8. He speaks English (well, better than Capello, anyway).
    9. He knows how to play players out of position at least as well as Capello.

MM was a breath of fresh air. Such an honest man who told it as it was. He did not stand with arms folded showing no emotion during games. I am often ashamed of so called Wolves fans who think we are still the great club of the fifties. We are not, stop singing ‘Those were the days’ so last century. Watching the 1-5 drumming, TC and TD need to go. The team also should take responsibility as they lacked stamina and how TC has survived so many managerial changes is beyond me. Like so many, I do not want Bruce, worse win percentage than Mick when sacked by Sunderland. If that happens I will protest with my absence.

It’s Morgans head that’s on the chopping block.
Morgan signs an agreement that if due to his inept handling of Wolves interests for the last 12 months and Wolves get relegated then he sells the club to a billionaire or an oil sheikh but not a chicken farmer for ONE POUND STERLING.
That person commits to putting in $500 million into the transfer fund.
In the meantime he offers a three year contract to Curbishly or a young up and coming manager like Man Uniteds super-sub and the same contract to his number two the ex-Chelsea trainer.
Finally, I’ll swallow a season in the Championship providing we come back playing the sort of exciting football that will tear the roof off not only at Molineux but every home and pub in not just Wolverhampton but on every continent.

There is something very wrong with the way the club is run. If there is some long term plan embedded in a wolves DNA, then when did Mick not fit into that plan and scheme , becuase the alternatives to do the job existed pre xmas when the results over two seasons plus were as clear as day light. there were good managers, a jan tfr window to do something, but this club seems to want to achieve this on the cheap. no more so evidenced by a £600/- signing. Morgan was saying we’ve spent x amount and we’re 3 points better than last season. It’s not that simple, never has been and any new manager stays with the club up or down, becuase if those two in charge were so concerned about relegation, then they had info info to have sacked mick way before then, and it’s not the responsibility of a new manager to get them out of their ineptitude and all this baloney about a 13 game contract. Anybody in belief of themselves would not take that on. There is an over reliance on keeping the finances so perfect it does look like it’s been run to pass on to someone else, not for internal investment for the good of the club and not the owner. This episode is doing more to show the true colours of Morgan than we would like to admit to ourselves, and it’s not nice. I watched on video, Mick leaving the ground and I think he looked relieved. When an owner walks into the changing room to rant, his motives are for himself and not the good of the club and thats what we’re beginning to see, what does this club mean to morgan apart from a tidy balance sheet to sell on?

@Dave Sims – it’s not like I hate Mick, but the bigger picture, as you put it. Is that we were going nowehere fast, his message was no longer getting through, we were playing without a game plan, the tactics were all wrong – it was the right decision. The timing was all wrong though, I would have done it at the start of January or in the summer. Out points total is terrible this season, we can’t keep relying, season upon season of there being 3 worse teams than us. It’s no way to run a football club and if we truly want to progress then Mick was never the man – you only have to look at his Prem record to know that

If they go for Bruce rather than Curbishley then we might as well all forget about it. It will show just how inept the club is. They back Mick when he was taking us down, they let him waste million after million, then sack him when it’s too late to bring in a manager who can have a transfer window to repair the damage of a team with no right back, no left back, no defensive midfielder and only one centre back.

I have followed this great club for over fifty years, and what is happening now is far beyond the days of the Bhatti Brothers, and the dark days of Chorley. Messrs Moxey and Morgan have made us a laughing stock. How they even considered giving Bruce the time of day remains a complete and utter mystery. He is a failure on all levels, and WE DONT want him. IF he gets appointed then any coats, fleeces, replica shirts, polo shirts, caps etc…. are ALL being sent back to the two M’s until such time as they appoint someone who will take this great club FORWARD. Now is the time to be bold and spend decent money on getting the best man for the job, and one who will placate the fans. And to all the MM lovers….. forget him, he is history ( should have gone after Blackburn last season ) he was taking this club back to the championship. Yes he may have done a great job in getting us to the land of milk and honey, but has neither the tactical brain or motivational skill to progress the club…. just LOOK at the RESULTS, they do not lie and they are why we are where we are. Who is going to get the job ???? Who knows with Stattler and Waldorf in charge. MM was not one of those mentioned when the job was up for grabs five and a half years ago, so don’t be surprised when the appointment does get made….just PRAY it IS NOT BRUCE.

Keane… good at upsetting players, useless at improving them.
Holloway… it would be fun, up or down (probably down, but at least we’d do it smiling)

I think that it is very interesting in what Morgan and Moxey have said about spending money. As a long standing Wolves fan, I recall that 37 years ago we spent £1.5M on Andy Gray, albeit having sold Steve Daley the week before for a similar sum. A pint of beer then cost about 19p (Banks’ Mild), how much for a pint now and how much have they spent?

I do feel that in some respects that Morgan and Moxey have tried to balance the books and it has been a gamble and one that they look like losing. Mr Morgan always looked like the sort of bloke that gets his way and perhaps in this respect he has met his match in the Premiership: let’s not forget that this was the man bidding for Liverpool and his bid was well over £100M. How much has he spent at Molineux?

Next season I look forward to being on an almost deserted North Bank, watching Wolves beat the likes of Barnsley and Peterborough. I fear the only company that I will have will be those faithful few who have always been there and of course the people in the new restaruant and cafes: which if these are run like the club has been run this season, will probably be the overspill from Asda.

In my opinion he should have gone last season as he didnt he should have gone when we lost 7 on the trot!.
Bruce should not have been considered never mind being the fornt runner.!
Their is only one IMPACT manager out their “KEVIN KEEGAN” with Lee Clark as his assistant.
Kevin Keegan would have united the whole of Wolves and would have brought in a real feeling of joy which may have been good enough to save us from the mess we are in!
Surely Moxey and Morgan could see where we were going under “Mick”?
Swansea Norwich had shown that they may have been favourites to go down at the start of the season but that is far from the case now!
Swansea and Norwich have ammassed more points then we have managed in three seasons at the same “TIME”!
Which world are some of the fans and Moxey and Morgan living in?!
With the continued in “MICK” we trust $%**%£”‘@?!!
Roy Keane would not be a bad choice as he will get the best out of the players for atleast the 13 games, after that he would start losing the players with his “ATTITUDE” of being a now it all and done it all chap.

MM had reached his peak, had nothing left to give and had to go. The problem now facing the club is because Morgan has the same stubborn streak that McCarthy has and would not do what was obvious
to many a Wolves fan except those who idolize McCarthy like a God!
Ultimately Morgan had little choice for with each passing game, Wolves were and are looking like a side going down and that means Morgan’s investment goes down too, financially that is.
As for the new manager, well if Morgan had made his move earlier either O’Neill or Hughes would have been available and that’s not saying that either would have been appointed but they were available!

This just gets worse! I have no faith what-so-ever in the board hiring the right man.

Lat seasn we did worse than the season before in the premier league so that was a step backwards and thats when we should have parted with McCarthy and moved heaven and earth to bring in O’Neil then.

A pack of pork-pies, some Black Country Pork Scratchings and a sack of money should do it. In all seriousness though, why would Allardyce leave a promotion-chasing West Ham side (who have backed him financially) for a Wolves side looking completely devoid of ideas and money? I’m not here to lambaste you all but seriously, I’ve seen Benitez, Pardew, Lambert etc all bandied about the comments section and there is more chance of me guessing Jessica Alba’s phone number, her dating me and accepting my marriage proposal on the back of a flying pig chariot than there is of these names coming. Bruce may not be your fans’ favourite but he is surely preferable to the (largely) inexperienced Keane, Ince, Clark etc.? Now that Curbishley has ruled himself out of contention for the job, ownership has really boxed itself in due to the poor timing of their decision to sack MM. Any quality Manager would be unlikely to accept a 13 game job unless they were offered huge money to risk their reputation on keeping our Championship side up. Newcastle tried that approach with Shearer and Dowie and it was a complete disaster.

The incoming candidate has to be given at least a medium term contract to sort this mess and surely has to secure a commitment from ownership that funds will be available to reshape the squad. Our chances of staying up look very remote and time has to be given to a new Manager to make changes.

I cannot see that Bruce is really the answer as his track record is not that good. And the tired list of unemployed managers used by Sky are not an answer either. Ownership would have had a better opportunity to have secured a qualified candidate if they had made their move before the January transfer window opened – it is telling to me that nothing was different then and they must have known that candidates athatoint point would have expected to be given some decent funds to inject new life into what is increasingly looking like a dead corpse.

Would be in the clubs long term intrest to get relegated and then rebuild with a manager who has new ideas and focus. Its the only way we will get Morgan to spend some money on quality players cause if we survive then as we have seen from last season, he will believe the players we have are good enough so lets build another stand.

As for Hodgson, just remember he got his job after the sacking of the unfortunate DiMatteo. The baggies had picked up far more points than we had under Mick when they still got rid of him? remember

I think some of the critisism levelled at Jez Moxey is way out of order. He is simply going through the process of finding a new manager which, in normal circumstances would be quite appropriate. Unfortunately this process is more applicable when more time is available. i.e. 2-3 months prior to the start of the season – not when there is only 13 games left.

Reading between the lines I think the whole situation has been instigated by the owner following his dressing room tantrum. The rest of the board (including Moxey) are just following the wishes of Steve Morgan.

With Alan Curbishley now ruling himself out (for whatever reason), it looks increasingly likely that Bruce will be the new manager. There’re are’nt that many other suitable options available.

This rather supports my and others’ view that SM and JM do not know what they’re doing.
The decision to keep MM at the beginning of the season was poor, given that the team had not improved or had the position. It was clear to all that MM had taken the team as far as he could. The decision not to replace MM at Christmas prior to the transfer window was poor, but probably driven by the knowledge that any decent manager would’ve requested or expected a a few decent signings. The decision to sack MM now without having worked out or had some preliminary meetings in order to work out who was likely to succeed MM, was appalling. The decision to replace a 14 year old stand and increase the capacity when it wasn’t clear why, in preference to establishing the club in the PL was incredibly poor. I do not know anyone in business, let alone football who would make that decision, unless the motive was to increase the revenue for the company building the stadium. Is there any link between them and SM? I can’t find one, is there one?
I was in the ground at the WBA match looking at the half built stand wondering if I was suffering from deja vu. For the older fans, remember the building of the then John Ireland stand that towered above the rest? Remember appalling club management, poor team, poor performances, money into the ground and not the team. Then of course the fall to the old fourth division. It is all so familiar.
I live far away from Wolves and only visit on match day, so cannot really understand how the majority feel about SM. I read many good things in the E&S about what he is doing for the community. Far more than me and without doubt, on the surface all these initiatives and investments should be applauded. Well done Mr Morgan, you seem like a top man. What I’d like to understand is what are your plans for WWFC, because without being in the PL they will undoubtedly change. So Mr Morgan sir, what is your plan, why do I not feel confident that a successful business man and pillar of the community can translate this into the success of keeping WWFC in the PL. Maybe JM has to be another casualty?

Ok, im not exstatic about the thought of Bruce getting the job either,.

But lets look at the positives…

Bruce has been a Premiership manager for 10 years now. Alot of you have been harping on about Micks lack of Premiership experience, so he must tick a box there in comparison.

He was a very successful defender at Premiership level, over 300 games for United. Now if we need anything to improve, then its our defence, so again, he ticks a box for me there.

He can attract good players of real quality to a squad. Brown, O’Shea, Bentner, Sessegnon etc, so once again, a positive.

He lives in the area, so he knows how important a game like last Sunday would of been to us.

For me there are one or two attributes there that, a) Mick didnt have, and b) we need and have lacked!

Don’t be too down hearted, he is not the worst candidate by a long way.

One final point I would make is that Ladywolf had it spot on when questioning Morgans intentions on what he wants from the club??

You lot however often refer to yourselves as “Numpties” so in answer to your argument I will continue to call you Numpties because thats what you lot are refered to by yourselves and Happy clappers… not really as offensive as getting personal with someone! Numpties and happy clappers are what the two sides of the camps are known as.

Again… you are missing the point. I’m saying sticking with MM because of the lack of options available not because he deserves it and the mess created by the board. Or would you rather Have Clipboard in charge of the Newcastle game? because thats where it is heading!

So what if clipboard is in charge this weekend. Whoever comes in now doesnt mean we would win the Newcastle match which is always going to be tough to do. Id rather them get the right person in. Not really a mess.

The mess has come from losing so many out of the 23 games this season. If we were mid table this wouldnt be happening.

I learned of the departure of Mick McCarthy with relief. His sacking was considerably overdue. Whilst loyalty and stability have to be admired at Wolves, under him the club was clearly going nowhere and that situation has been apparent for a couple of years. Mr McCarthy had shown himself quite incapable of organising a Premier League team able to compete effectively at this level. The defence lacked any structure or coordination and the mid-field and attack were not much better, unable make goal-scoring opportunities creatively.

I have been a lifelong supporter of Wolves for over 70 years and it has become demoralising to me to become so dismissive and despondent in my attitude towards the club. Game after game performances have become so dire as to be laughable to the extent that I have started to ridicule the team in any dialogue or conversation as I had no optimism to expect anything better.

I grew to respect Mr McCarthy for his dignity and honest assessment of matches but one should expect more from the manager than routine excuses of “bad luck” and “poor referee decisions”. Mick McCarthy was a failure with Sunderland and he kept up his track record with Wolves.

How many people watching live games or on TV observe the hugs between managers before kick-off and all the complimentary comments between and towards opposing managers as a sort of mutual admiration societyas they seek to polish up their respective CV’s in readiness for seeking their next appointment. There are few really good top flight managers and the majority are re-cycled has-beens. And so to the future appointment at Wolves; the names in the frame are hardly inspiring, with the possible exception of Alan Curbishley. Whether he remains in contention remains to be seen, as for the rest I hope not! However as a last resort if the right offer were made I might be prepared to come out of retirement.

Morgan has not spent enough and we even had about £4.5m set aside for January that we never spent. Moxey is one of the highest paid CEO’s in the Premiership. He earns off ticket sales and the catering also and stopped us getting talent like Distin, Cabaye, Gardner and Demba Ba! Clipboard is hopeless!

The paucity of candidates to Wolves post is known from some years now as you might have seen with the scarcity of English youngsters coming through in England. The FA thought wrongly to pay a mega £6M to a foreign manager knowing quite well England have no longer proper young players coming through. It is the same with managers who are very poor tacticians in England. So I am not surprised a man who has failed at Sunderland will get a far better improved packet to take over the job which will see our team plummeting to the Championship. Relegation in itself is not a drama as we cannot win at home where we are supposed to get some points for safety. And we regularly fail at Molineux and also we are not that good away from home. So relegation is a banker for Wolves because they are so easy to beat at home. I would go even further to say that they are easy meat to every team. And during nearly SIX YEARS not one single player from the academy has made his mark or been deprived of the chance to do so. That’s why the scarcity will become acute in the years to come. African countries produce better players than England. And mind you they do not have money like in England to produce players. In the meantime all English teams receive colossal sums of money from TV and sponsors to throw by the window. Recent examples of Torres and Carrol. Fans also are to be accused of pushing for more spending while neglecting the infrastructures which other countries are making good progress in these things. There will be many Portsmouth, Glasgow Rangers and other clubs before fans will realise one day that good governance and good use of money are vital to the security of clubs as England have already entered into a long recession which I hope will bring sanity back to the game.

As for Bruce, i dont think the board will go there, if they are listening to the local vibe, as he would be as unpopular as McLeish is at the villa.

At the end of the day, the boards incompetence at getting rid of mick to late and not having a plan B is coming home to roost.

We should not even be having this conversation as this should have been carried out, in November maybe December at the latest.

Was speaking to my brother yesterday who is a Villa fan and McLeish has the same negative thinking problem.
We need to move with the times and appoint a forward thinking manager who doesn’t stick with rigid formations and actually has a plan B.
For what it is worth I would take anybody on the list over what we have had to watch this season as long as Megson isn’t on it.

McClueless should have gone in October, and replaced with Paul Lambert or Mark Hughes if he had wanted to come. Worst possible timing for his dismissal was when he was given the boot…. just as the transfer window closes.

I don’t understand why everyone is against Bruce, not one has given a reason why. I bet it’s because he used to manage Birmingham. Wolves fans tend to reason on a very base level, hence the suggestions of Roy Keane…. which is utter hypocrisy considering that he failed at Ipswich and actually has a worse record at Sunderland than Steve Bruce. The E+S put out a random name and all of a sudden everyone wants them, this goes for transfer targets as well.

The managerial cupboard is pretty much bare for a Hodgson-type appointment. Even Shteve McClaren has been employed elsewhere. I really don’t know who to go for, personally, the best I can come up with would be a hail-Mary bid to appoint Mattias Sammer (fantasies, eh?). What I do know is that wanting someone “to fit the DNA of the club” is pointless if you are only going to employ them for 13 games. Just get the one who is most likely to get the 18 points we’ll need to survive this season and go from there. This process has become a complete and utter shambles through Moxey’s pinickity penny-pinching ethos of recruitment, no wonder the team are rubbish.

If we had a CEO and owner with some balls we’d be sniffing around some decent Championship managers but that would mean paying out money to another club, so that’s a No-Go. Oh FFS Moxey, just get Slaven Bilic and put us out of our misery.

anyway you look at the situation at wolves it isnt a pretty picture, the best candidate has turned us down, the only candidates available are rejects from other clubs, I suspect Curbs has turned it down as he feels the ‘Vision Morgan and moxey have, is to put it mildly, unrealistic.I have nothing against Bruce he was a great servant for man u, but come on a good manager, Huddersfield nearly bankrupted them before leaving for a bigger club, Blues did no better than mick at Wolves, and wigan the same, at sunderland he was given a bugdet to spend and wasted it with no real impact on the teams position in the league, hang on doesnt this sound familiar, yes cause mick has done the same here. So why are we even interviewing some one who is no better than mick, even when they have a lot more experience of top flight football, why are we also IMO wasting money on developing the ground we didnt fill, to make it bigger ???? why are we developing the training ground, which if i remember rightly, is / was state of the art a few years ago ??? But here is the million dollar question, why are we doing all this when we have not cemented our premiership status???? yup i have no idea and it smacks of incompentence to me, Would you buy a bargin dream car as a non runner and then just respray it so it looked nice, youd fix the engine first !!! hence making the ground look great and having a poor team running around makes no sense to me, yes hindsight would tell you spend it on some players, but as we have seen we cant attract decent players, due to the wage cap in place. The club has got sort the master plan out and quick, or i see wolves doing a hull, blackpool etc and slipping back into the doldrums of championship footy. i hope we can somehow stay up but if i’m honest we havent got a prayer, i hope i’m proved wrong but i cant see it myself. Cheers Wolves for the good and bad times but i feel you have lost touch with the supporters of this great club, and that is the final straw for me, with out us you are nothing, to quote moxey, win together ( not much then ) lose together ( done a lot of that this season ) and draw together, ( not done that alot this season). BUT and this is a BIG BUT Mr Curbishley if you keep us up you will only be given £7,000,000 at the most to work on your team, oh and we want mid table if you dont mind oh and we wont be letting you spend more than £50,000 a week on wages even if the player is a top prem player (Like Demba Ba who Mick was after in the summer)Why should we pay prem wages to players!?! Morgan had a dream of europe in his 10 year plan does he not understand you need to invest to end uo in europe AND NOT ON THE STADIUM AND TRAINING GROUND YOU FOOL! Wolves will have an A1 Preiereship training facility which we wont need as we will be in the Championship same as we wont need the new stan cullis stand. I am worried that this is becoming frighteningly close to the truth. I have always tried to see Morgan as committed to the success of the club, but I don’t believe Curbishley is an unreasonable man and for them not to share the same vision tells me that one of them doesn’t know much about running a football club. Do we think that is the guy who rebuilt Charlton from a club with no ground back to the top division or a scouse builder?

Steve Morgan should stick to construction and Moxey should go back to being an accountant. We as fans are simply being taken for a ride, the club is being run as a self supporting business with limited investment in the paying side.

The main reason Curbishly will not come to Molineux is that Mr Morgan will not allow Curbishly to bring his own back room staff in. Probably because he wants to do it on the cheap. It also raises the point do they plan to keep connor on to work with the new manager when he has been present through ALL the recent failings of the team and is partly responsible as first team coach. So why not let Curbishly bring in his own staff? It’s about time we had a few more changes along with the actual manager. If they appoint Bruce and keep Connor the fans will be clammering for far greater changes. Maybe a change in Chief exec and ultimately owner? Who knows. Steve Bruce has been sacked after two and half years with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Photograph: Nick Potts/PA

Shortly after taking charge at Sunderland Steve Bruce was asked if he had considered experimenting with a Christmas Tree formation. “I’m not really into tactics,” he replied. At the time that response was easy to interpret as a deliberately flippant or, perhaps, a self-deprecating means of avoiding answering the question. As the seasons passed, though, the suspicion grew that the former Manchester United captain had simply been honest.

Arguably one of the principal reasons Bruce is no longer in charge at the Stadium of Light concerns his apparent inability to tweak formations or tactics during matches. Whenever a rival manager re-configured his system mid-game, Bruce invariably failed to come up with a countermeasure.

In recent months Alan Pardew, Mark Hughes, Roy Hodgson and, most recently, Roberto Martínez have all seemingly out-thought him as Sunderland dropped points against supposedly weaker sidesthey really should have beaten.

If he failed to cut it as a tactician, the 50-year-old did not seem much of a strategist either. Including loans, 30 players were signed – several of whom have subsequently been moved on – during Bruce’s two-and-a-half years on Wearside. That represents an unsettling “churn” factor and hardly proved conducive to developing either a clear playing philosophy or strong team spirit.

Always rather amorphous, if not downright scrappy, Sunderland’s high-tempo style lacked creativity, not to mention control, in central midfield. Unable to dictate play, the team frequently failed to press home early advantages.

In many ways Bruce’s decision to make the hot-headed, yellow card-prone Lee Cattermole his captain proved emblematic of a rather gung-ho reign during which players such as David Meyler were rushed back from serious injuries only to suffer further complications, the idea of hiring a sports psychologist was dismissed and the manager boasted about his inability to send an email. While Bruce – who did finally learn how to log on last summer when the club issued him with an iPad – may well argue this lack of computer literacy was hardly relevant, many of his peers spend countless hours checking out the latest sports science innovations, researching transfer targets and analysing Prozone statistics on their increasingly indispensable laptops.

Unashamedly old school, Bruce believed that motivation was the key to management but the influx of overseas coaches has raised the Premier League’s technical bar and despite his relative youth, he has begun to look suspiciously like a man whose era has passed.

Unlike many modern managers he did not coach the team himself, delegating that job to his assistant, Eric Black. While Bruce’s undoubtedly engaging, humour-suffused, personality had a broad appeal, he fell out with quite a few players, most notably Kenwyne Jones, now at Stoke, and Anton Ferdinand, now at QPR and who had by common consensus finally emerged as Sunderland’s outstanding defender when he was sold in August.

Shortly afterwards Sunderland’s manager was badly let down by Titus Bramble, who faces a crown court trial on sexual assault charges in January. Other bad buys included Matthew Kilgallon, Christian Riveros, Marcos Angeleri and Paulo Da Silva. Meanwhile Craig Gardner, bought from Birmingham for £6m, has barely figured in the first team.

There were some good purchases along the way, too, such as Lorik Cana, Asamoah Gyan and, above all, Darren Bent . Unfortunately Bent had become desperate to leave Sunderland six months before his eventual move to Aston Villa in January. Cana headed to Turkey after just a year while Gyan has newly gone to United Arab Emirates on loan. Money evidently played a big part in all these deals, but it does not represent the entire behind-the-scenes story.

Something was clearly wrong because, as last season’s promising beginning subsided into a post-new year collapse, managerial excuses increasingly became a recurring, if self-destructive, theme.

It certainly did not play well with Sunderland fans when the crowd were blamed for harbouring overly “great expectations” or that Bruce constantly bemoaned the difficulty of attracting players to the north-east. More recently, his loudest lament has been that locals would not accept him purely because he had been born north of the Tyne and grew up supporting Newcastle United.

Granted, a minority shamefully hurled chants of “You fat Geordie bastard – get out of our club” after Saturday’s defeat to Wigan, but the overwhelming majority of supporters did not care about his roots. Moreover their “expectations” were mostly pretty modest.

Two home wins since New Year’s Day have tried Wearsiders’ patience but, contrary to Bruce’s theories, many would have taken the odd defeat to Newcastle in their stride had there been signs of progress or a discernible playing pattern emerging. Maybe the core problem was that Bruce never accepted that, sometimes, the devil really is in the detail. Soon after Ahmed Elmohamady arrived from Egypt, Sunderland’s manager was asked if the winger would be observing Ramadan and if so, how the daylight fasting might affect his game.

The question was met with a blank look. “Is Elmohamady a Coptic Christian rather than a Muslim then?” the questioner persisted. It was an important distinction and the answer should have tripped off Bruce’s tongue, but he clearly did not have a clue.

    Counted out

2: Points clear of the relegation zone, in 16th, having won only two of 13 league games this season

10: Sunderland’s position last season. The club finished 13th in Steve Bruce’s first full season in charge

28: Bruce’s win percentage, less than Premier League figure with Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City

30: Number of players Bruce signed since joining in March 2009, several of whom have left

15: Red cards received during Bruce’s reign, more than any other Premier League club in the same period

2: His second sacking. Bruce resigned at Sheffield Utd, Wigan (twice), Crystal Palace and Birmingham

I am led to believe that part of the reason why Curbishley turned the job down was due to him and Morgan not seeing eye to eye. Literally as Morgan’s head’s so small. It infuriated him by all accounts. Curbs is well known in the game for only working with people with relatively normal sized heads.

I’m also told that, in spite of his ever increasing noggin, Bruce’s odds were cut when he kept a straight (well as straight as he ever could) face in the interview as he sat opposite pin-head and beach ball bonce. His chances were further enhanced when he agreed to Morgan’s first demand:

At his press unveiling, Morgan must stand in the extreme foreground and Bruce 300 yards behind on the opposite side of the pitch so that photographs will appear to show they have the same sized heads.

Thirdly, I am reliably informed that McCarthy’s head resembling that of muppet Sam the Eagle also perturbed Morgan over the years and was instrumental in his eventual fall from grace.

Fourthly, the my mole points to Paul Ince being in with a good shout as his head is quite small and his voice squeaky, which by all accounts augers well as Moxey hates manly voices.

Whispers from the Boardroom suggest that Poyet is being pursued mainly thanks to his facial contours. The Black Country Uruguayan community refer to him affectionately as ‘Saucer Faerce’ and it’s believed that Moxey’s big round ball head will fit perfectly into Gus’s concave mug, making their working relationship, well, symbiotic.

    You heard it here first.

280: I love and avidly follow two football teams (much expensive travelling) in both divides of the UK. As a fellow countryman and Glasgow Celtic supporter of Paul Lambert, why on earth do you think he would even consider leaving such a progressive football club to come to our mess at Molineux? At present, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, despite other posts, cannot be considered to be superior in any way to the Canaries. Opposite actually.
Paul has already refuted suggestions in the Scottish press that a return as manager of the famous Glasgow Celtic could be a possibility. He said he was fully committed to Norwich City. And it shows.
Now, there is a man north of the border from the opposite side of the city, albeit a wee bit older, who could come to the hallowed Waterloo Road and save our season. I have already said it, and shall repeat here: Send for Walter Smith, the manager who, after outfoxing Martin O’Neill at Celtic Park and leading Glasgow Rangers to all sorts of glory, elevated the Scottish international side to 14th in the world rankings!!!! As a Scot, even I have to admit that was some achievement! And do not forget, he had a couple of years at Goodison Park saving them from relegation, and was nnumber two to the legend, Alex Ferguson.

What an absolute shambles. The board sack McCarthy on a split decision without a clue about how to appoint, never mind who, was to be the new manager.

Clearly Curbs was the right man, just picked the wrong club amd owner. Morgan has now defined his football operation as second fiddle to his building empire. All he wanted was the real estate angle. Liverpool fans must be sighing hugely. What on earth would have happened to that club if he had gained control there?
Oh dear oh dear. A sad sad turn of events indeed. Two incompetents at the helm instead of three & Connor in charge of the team. At this stage I’d offer the job to Ince, at least he has some passion, even if his voice is squeaky. He couldn’t be more of a joke than Bruce. Do they know each other?

western isles wolf, fantastic well thought out post. walter smith would be ideal for wwfc, experienced, knows the game inside out, and unlike mcarthy can change the game tactically, when needed.

and to freshen things up, as a young and hungry number 2 with a wolves connection, paul ince or driscoll could learn from the old master.

of course you will get the disrespect from the negative fans and tescos about(wwfc bieng managed by a butcher) after the first defeat.

Read one of Steve Claridge’s books. Why not get him in? According to him, everything was everyone else’s fault and he was the fittest, best player and trainer as well as manager. Any Wolves fan would love to see him back at the Mol…sorry, just woke up after nightmare! Not excited about Bruce but the only one with Premiership experience if Benitez doesn’t want to come. Try and poach Pullis…straws, clutching…etc UTW
