Wolves in fresh round of manager talks

Wolves will conduct a second wave of interviews this weekend in order to leave no stone unturned in the hunt for Mick McCarthy’s successor.

The three front-runners in the eyes of the bookies have now all spoken with club officials about the vacancy – but Wolves’ list of contenders reaches beyond Alan Curbishley, Steve Bruce and Neil Warnock.

The race took another intriguing twist this afternoon when Bruce, who has been second-favourite overnight behind Curbishley, saw his odds shorten dramatically.

The former Birmingham, Wigan and Sunderland chief was slashed to as little as 1/7 by William Hill with Curbishley’s odds increasing to 7/1.

Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey have interviewed Curbishley and Bruce and have also spoken with Warnock, who has since been appointed to the Leeds United hot seat.

But all the Wolves front-runners have been advised that other candidates are on the club’s radar which is likely to push back an appointment to the early part of next week.

Morgan and Moxey are still adamant that they want their new gaffer at the helm in time to prepare a game plan for next weekend’s visit to Newcastle and the start of the 13-game schedule which will decide Wolves’ fate.

All the remaining candidates on the list will be in the “out of work” bracket and available for hire immediately – but the bookies’ market underlines just how open the field is beyond the front three.

Two former servants of a smiliar vintage, Paul Ince and his ex-boss Dave Jones, have both let it be known at Molineux that they would relish the chance. But as yet there has been no take-up.

Beyond them are improbable figures such as Gianluca Vialli, out of work since 2002 and yet a curious third favourite for many bookmakers, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rafa Benitez as well as more familiar old hands of the domestic game led by Gordon Strachan, Roy Keane and Walter Smith.

Sacked Huddersfield boss and rising talent Lee Clark shot up the betting market yesterday. However, he clashes with Wolves’ intention to seek out a man of Premier League experience.

Well it won’t be Warnock as he has just been appointed as the new Leeds manager.

The list of available managers just highlights what few options there are.

Still expect Curbishley to be appointed early next week.

Warnocks gone to Leeds which is great as I have another reason to hate them both even more now! Whilst I understand they feel they must exhaust all avenues to make sure they get the right man in place I can’t help feeling that this is just so typical of wolves to drag it out and you watch we’ ll still end up with Steve bl*^%dy Bruce!!!

If the board are listening to the fans then Curbishley is the only choice.
Online polls have shown that Bruce would be a disaster with the fans and that Curbishley is the only contender with widespread support.

Delaying an appointment to get the right man is to Wolves credit BUT if he is not appointed before at least Wednesday of next week then he will have no time to assess the players before the Newcastle game. That would leave Mr. Clipboard in charge of the team and I hardly think any Wolves fan would be happy to see him choosing the 18 players to gain a result.
As messrs Morgan & Moxey are interviewing even more than the 3 ‘obvious’ names which have been touted around, gives the impression they are not convinced any of those 3 are suitable. That being the case, then who would be?
Vialli some years ago would have been worth a shout but not after 8 years out of the game!
Keane would shake the players up but would he turn our fortunes around? Not convinced about that.
Smith, has a wealth of experience but what has he ever achieved South of the border? It’s a different game down here.
Ince, Jones, Benitez, Solskjaer and Clark.
Ince has not proved he can manage anyone since he failed to get the job last time. Jones has his plusses but is he any better than McCarthy?
Benitez has already ruled himself out which leaves Solskjaer and Clark but Moxey has declared that a novice will not be given the job, so those 2 are as good as non-runners.
So unless there is anyone who M & M have their sights set on, then surely the new man must come from those previously mentioned but who?
    The guessing game goes on!

Alan Curbishley for me but my second choice would be Dave Jones with Incey for the rest of the season and see what Division we are playing in before making a permanent appointment.

Our defence is what needs MASSIVE attention and in Zubar, Bassong, Craddock, Foley and Jonhson we have good individuals but they need to make a unit. Since Mc Namara has left the club we also haven’t had a specialist left back. Konchesky, Bridge, Ridgewell etc have been players identified but not gone for.

I hope that the new Manager will give Hammill an opportunity of a run of games at home as him and Jarvis will cause havoc on the flanks.

I still believe that Neil Warnock is the front runner for the job at Wolves, his offbeat style and personality, experience and shock tactic merchant, is something the Wolves team have been lacking and are in real need of a dose of the ‘Warnock plan’
Neil is thorough, direct and takes no prisoners in his approach, and capable of sorting out the men from the boys in quick time. He is a ‘death or glory’ manager, the type Wolves need in the short time at least.

We know Curbishley is the frontrunner with the bookies….and us fans, but, it’ll be interesting to find how you view him (and vice versa) Also be interesting to know if Dave Jones has a realistic chance. He was the one manager who suffered ‘cos Sir Jack’s patience ran out on stumping up cash to be wasted. I think he was popular with the fans and more importantly Jez the Pie.

I hope Huddersfield snap up “BRUCE” another manager who is and only ever will be at the wrong end of the table.
Bruce would not last two seasons at Wolves.
Curbishley is the man but only for the 13 games!!!!
If we go down we need to get a completely new Manager, people like “zola”"vialli”"lambert”"poyyet”"rogers” these Men especially LAMBERT are seriously worth chasing.
Zola and Vialli will raise the clubs profile to a level of stardom. We would attract some serious ittalian talent and will start being a team who will entertain!
I would love a roller coaster ride but the clubs future may be put at risk with the latter two. Also whilst “moxey” is in charge we wont get any hollywood type of action,I respect that but sometimes he as to learn to compromise.
I would do the job for free for the last “13 GAMES” I would get the 5-6 wins needed for survival!!!!!!!These very players coming out and taking blame is not good enough they get “paid” serious amounts they should be constantly 100% in training, off field activities and on the pitch during each and every season! In between they can get carried away with their “FAME”!

Rumour control is that Bruce is the front runner – I would love Gus Hiddink but he is tied up with a Russian club and I doubt we could afford him anyway. Firstly, i’d like to point out it is so good to be able to put former in the above name!!

Secondly, whoever it is that comes in needs to clear out the deadwood in the backroom staff. Tez is no more than a youth/sunday football coach, Tony is nothing more than a fitness fanatic, Pat Mountain taught himself how to play in goal at uni, scouting system that consisted of Taff Evans sat in a bar in Belgium or Scotland, drinking Stella and asking the locals who they thought could put a shift in, but with an obvious language barrier.

Now is the time to get rid and put in place something that no other manager has been able to achieve. My personal preference would be to appoint Curbishley with Ray Wilkins as First team coach and bring with them their own team/contacts/experience with them.

If they appoint Bruce, they might as well forget the Early Bird scheme, cos there won’t be any takers. Bruce spent a fortune at Sunderland in the summer, took them into the relegation zone and watched them climb to 8th under Martin O’Neill. Morgan may as well have stuck with Mick if all he is going to do is bring in Bruce, the man who has failed at many clubs. Personally I’d bring in Curbishly in a heartbeat if he wants the job. Just like O’Neill at Leicester, he kept Charlton in the Prem for years (mid table at that) and watched them slide down the divisions when they sacked him.

I would just like to say to the Huddersfield owner snap up Steve Bruce this weekend. Go on i know you want to.
Of the others who are being interviewed it’s anybody’s guess who that will be.
They have already said it’s no job for a novice, so that would rule out the likes of Ince, Clark and Solskjaer.

If they are keen on taking a manager already at a club the wait could be longer.

Mick has left us in a big mess with a squad that cant win at home, cant defend or keep the ball. With 13 games left even capello, benitez would struggle and to keep this club up and this would be one of their biggest achievements.

Ince? far too inexperienced and didn’t cover himself in glory at Blackburn.

Vialli? too long out of the top flight, look at Dalglish, he’s done ok but hes not in touch with the ‘modern’ premier league.

I’d like to see Dave Jones back, he’s got unfished business and something to prove and maybe Ince as his assistant.

Alan Curbishley is a “Crisis Manager”.
He may well be appointed to scrape us into staying in the Premiership, and he has an outside chance to succeed, but he isn’t the man to progress the club further.
Had Mr Morgan the sense, and the ‘bottle’ to relieve Mick earlier, the job could have been offered to Mark Hughes and Martin O’Neil, either of which would serve Wolves better.
As it stands, Alan Curbishley has no serious rivals, given the perameters set by the board. The question is, will Curbishley want the responsibility with the constraints associated with the position. Tough decision, even though he wants to get back into managing a premership side.
As for Mick McCarthy? Great guy, great manager up to and including championship level. Pulled Wolves out of the doldrums into the premiership. BUT, that cursed word, BUT, he hasn’t got the skill or the tactical know-how to be successful at that level, shame, bloody shame.

Just heard Jezza on Sky Sports and the interview seems to give the impression that the initial round of interviews didn’t go that well, or why would they be bothering to interview a second round of candidates?

One thing is clear, this is going to be a long drawn out process and i don’t think Moxey and Morgan have got a clue who to appoint. What other club goes through such a time consuming interview process. Most clubs sack a manager and they already know who they want. Potential managers have already been sounded out. QPR sacked Warnock after the match on saturday and on sunday they were having talks with Hughes.

I honestly believe Morgan and Moxey had such blind faith in McCarthy they never thought it would come to this. The recent run of results and the Albion defeat though forced their hand and they had to act. If they were fully in control of a business (and the small matter of a football team) they would have long ago been considering their options and a clear idea as to what they want.

If, as is being runoured Curbishley doesnt want the job, or he didn’t interview well, please don’t appoint Bruce or Strachan. Take our time and properly consider the appointment of an up and coming manager who will grow and develop as the club does. The problem is they are all (excpet Lee) in posts at the moment and Moxey is clearly too ‘pure’ to go and poach one. Make a rash short term fix appointment and we might live to regret it.

I really do despair being a Wolves supporter sometimes – there’s something not quite right at the club.

As an aside If you have to pick up a manager who does not have the experience then pick up one with something to prove, with passion and fight…..Billy Davis. Problem is you need a man for all seasons. Who’d take a 13 game job on if no promise for the next season existed? MM have to offer at least 18 month contract. Problem being is that after a 5-1 drubbing most candidates would only think there’s a 50% chance of survival and any contract for just this season would be too risky for them. The talk about Curbs turning you down seems a bit of speculation so whilst there is hope hold on. Though why a second round of interviews is required goodness only knows.

I know we only have rumours to go on at the moment but –

When I first saw on Sky that Curbishley was interested I was excited because I think he could do a good job. His record with both Charlton and West Ham was very good. However, as the days went by I became less confident about Curbishley’s motives for mentioning his interest on live TV. He has done the same thing in the past, mentioning his interest in a club but then pulling out at the last minute (Leeds, Newcastle and Villa over the last few years). I think he was using us and Sky to let London clubs know that he was available but with no interest whatsoever in moving north of the Watford Gap.

We will never know for sure what the board offered him, but my gut feeling is that he would have wanted far more than we as a club would be willing to give in order to keep his record safe. I think this is now a dead deal and we should look elsewhere.

I’m personally glad that Warnock is out of the frame and I hope the rumours about Bruce turning it down are also true – don’t want either. My choice would be to give Dave Jones another chance providing he promises to get rid of Conner. He did get us up and does haved “unfinished business” at the Molineux.

Can this saga get much worse?

As others above have pointed out Bruce has declined a 13 match offer. While I’m not a fan of his, I can fully understand his refusal. Would the players really put their all into playing for a manager who in all likelyhood will be gone at the end of the season?

This is rapidly turning into a farce. A kneejerk reaction which resulted in the sacking of the best manager we have had for 30 years, followed by interviews with a set of conditions that no right minded manager is going to except – unless they’re desperate for a job.

Irrespective of whether you were pro-McCarthy or anti-McCarthy, this sorry mess we now find ourselves in is down to mismanagement. The time to replace a manager is not in February.

Sadly, (and it pains me to say it), I’m beginning to think that we might as well appoint Terry Connor until the finish of the season, and then look at all the options.

Only Wolves could sack a manager AFTER the transfer window and AFTER Martin O’Neill stopped claiming unmeployment benefit.

Amidst it all, we are told that “no stone will be left unturned” in finding a new guy. Most people would avoid employing anything that lives under a stone…. but not the Wolves hierarchy. Most of the names linked to the vacancy are a joke – ie a collection of general ailures, ex-Molineux failures r people who have been out of football since the time of Stan Cullis.

Of course it could be that Morgan is trying a psychology experiment. It goes like this…

    1. Players give up playing
    2. Morgan sacks McCarthy
    3. Players finally admit its their fault
    4. Morgan re-employes McCarthy
    5. McCarthy kicks players backsides after their admission of guilt
    6. Wolves avoid relegation.

Curbishley & Bruce declined due to their inability to take on board Jez’s dream of “player tradeing” (free transfers to anybody else) instead of using real money to buy players. Was it just luck or coincidence that when our CEO left Stoke City, they then started to progress as a club, acheiveing promotion, playing at Wembley in Cup Final, playing in Europe, winning games in Premier regularly, BUYING players to improve their team,(not fire sale remnants of relegated team’s squads)using REAL money.

We have to put our trust in Moxley and the board to get the right man but its not looking good.
I always said that they have a championship mentality to the transfer market which Mick was fully behind.Preferring to buy in quantity rather than in potential or quality. johnson for scotland comes to mind.

But they seem to be showing the same mentality towards getting a new manager. They have said they want an experienced hand to come in. If thats so they then must know they cant get the likes of Curbs and bruce etc in on the cheap.
Sacking and replacing a prem manager is an expensive business.
If the newspaper reports are true. they offered Curbs a short term contract and a low package if we go down. This sounds attractive to a young manager but not an experienced one who would want to be paid for his knowledge and reflects badly on the clubs ambition to go forward.
Yes Dalglish took the liverpool job initially on a short term basis but his heart and soul is in the club.

Can anyone see allardyce, oneil or hughes taking up this offer when they were available??

This penny-pinching attitude (especially with a new manager) has got to stop. It’s like what the Soccer Saturday people said, what message are Steve and Jez sending out to us fans? Steve Morgan talks like we are back in the 60’s or 70’s period where we were last competitive at the top end of the table, we don’t have the quality to be mid-table team, and Moxey is just thinking constantly about the cheap option, he doesn’t want to hurt his bonus does he? We need a new voice in boardroom as well on the football pitch.

Well, you were all warned to be careful what you wish for and we’ve ended up in a right old mess! If a change had to be made it should have been done a couple of months ago.

The whole thing is now being shown up to be a ‘knee jerk’ reaction to losing one match. No planning or foresight at all!

If we end with Bruce(and he’s still the bookies favourite at 4/6!) I will not be renewing my season ticket – 100% guaranteed.

What is the point of offering just a 13 game contract? We should be planning longer-term and,if the sacking of MM was really to ensure we stay up, the chosen candidate presumably has been chosen because they do this first part? Go back to Curbishley and give him what he wants – he’s our best hope. Failing that see if Dave Jones and Incey want to team up or go for a ‘fresh’ face and somebody like Solksjaer.

This is all very worrying. The reputation of the club took a massive knock when we we’re soundly beaten last week. Yes, MM had to go; his time was up. We then gave ourselves an improved chance of survival. From the available names, Curbishley stood out and M&M had the perfect opportunity to show themselves as in synch with the fans if E&S polls and personal evidence is to be believed. Dancing around other candidates is not such a bad idea so long as it convinces M&M that their no.1 target is ultimately the right man.
The longer the appointment takes, the more imperative it is that M&M get it right. So, a week on and the fact that Curbishley appears to have rejected their overtures will make most fans feel it confirms what they have long suspected: that M&M may be ‘astute’ businessmen, but they lack the class to get the deal done quickly and properly.
With the right man at the helm, I reckon we have a slight advantage over the other relegation candidates, but with the wrong man there – can you imagine the fans’ reaction to Steve Bruce? – we will be one of the three most likely for the drop. If, indeed, M&M have made Curbishley an offer which he feels will not give him a fair crack – or the chance to establish himself with the players, beyond 13 games, now is the time for M&M to show strong, positive management, not to mention a touch of class we – this club, deserve. Pride and business plan ‘A’ needs to be swallowed and flexibility shown. If Curbishley has heard what they have to offer and doesn’t feel it’s going to work all-round, it’s time to make concessions to him and respect his experience as to what it takes to a) save this club from the drop and b) push on and give us what we all crave: an established Premier League team which waarants and expanding stadium because fans want to be there – rather than watching it in the pub, on SKY or on their laptops. That would make the extra investment – which Curbishley would seem to be seeking, worth it in the long term.
This week could be the most pivotal since Wolves appointed Graham Turner – imperative now that M&M look at what they want and what they are offering to a manager to get us all there. Now’s the time to be bold, not think small.

Why are Wolves always so clueless?

Usually clubs get done for ‘tapping up’ prospective new managers BEFORE they sack their existing manager. It’s obviously dodgy but solves the problem we’re now in.

If M&M had their doubts about Mick (which they clearly did) then surely sound out Bruce/Curbishley BEFORE getting rid of your incumbent. If they’re not up for it then you know where you stand.

They could have also done this BEFORE the close of the transfer window.

It also sounds increasingly like the deal being offered is some ropey 13 game ‘contract’ which will allow Wolves a get-out-clause if we then go down. Even if we do go down we still get the Parachute payment.

I can see why Curbs (and others) wouldn’t be attracted on a keep-Wolves-up-or-get-out kind of deal. What’s the point? especially as they would know they’d have to continue next season on a subsidence budget and especially as they’ll know that come the end of the season there’ll be other more attractive jobs around.

Instead we knee-jerk, kick out the guy who had given Wolves their best period in 30 years and now we’ll get relegated with some dodgy manager in charge.

Whats the odds on a statement along the lines of “We need more time to get the man we want” so we will give the role to Terry Conner for the rest of the season? Which is what Moxey wants because he is so in love with TC. After all what other reason would there be to keep this bloke at the club after 6 managers have gone yet Clipboard is still here.
Curbishley was keen to come here, the board were keen to have him apparently yet after one conversation with Morgan Curbishley didn’t want to know, only bad times ahead by the look of things.
I have said it before, Morgan and Moxey are not football people so we can’t be surprised that they are making such a pigs ear of it all.

I think there’s a fair few on here that have branded this whole thing a shambles. No doubt Curbishley has walked away because either Morgan or Moxey (I probably know which) has turned round and said you need to utilise Connor – “He’s part of the future of the club and he’s staying, end of”
Morgan should have done this last Summer if not at the absolute very latest Christmas – we now have little chance of surviving whoever takes over. The best candidate in my view (Curbishley) has pulled out. Thankfully Warnock is out of the running – great Championship manager but little else – oh, we’ve just got rid of one of those.
And this leaves us with who exactly?
Steve Bruce – might do a job, but I think it’s a real risk. I’ve not been convinced by him to date.
    And…………who else?
I’m not surprised Brucey is 1/7 on with some bookies. There is no-one else.
Which begs the question, is Bruce good enough to get us back from the Championship? The best bloke for that job has just been sacked.
I’ve had little faith in Mick for well over 18 months so I’m not going to defend an ex-manager who may well have got us up but is no good at this level. We should have sacked him in the summer and moved on. Great Champioship level manager but way out of his depth in the Big Boys league.
Now we’re in a laughable position where the Board have had a knee-jerk reaction (Early Bird anyone?) without actually even having someone in mind to appoint quickly. Most teams sack their manager because someone better is available and they’ve normally sounded it out first. We’ll probably decide to leave Clipboard in charge until the summer, because Moxey thinks he “has a great deal of potential”.
You couldn’t make it all up.

Seriously though, we are going down. No question. So why did we not just stick with MM? We are not going to appoint a manager of any quality now.

Save some money, leave TC in charge. Sammy Chung got us promoted after Bill McGarry got sacked.

Apart from a spell with John Barnwell, we have been utter rubbish since McGarry. MM has been our best manager since 1976.

Now, no one is interested. Warnock’s gone to Leeds. Curbishley isn’t interested. He doesn’t agree with the way the Chairman wants to run the club. Strange that. Curbishley, accomplished player, highly rated coach and manager who was a candidate for the England job. Morgan, house builder. I wonder who is right?

Now I see Bruce is waivering, and we are being linked with Roy Keane?

This is (hopefully) the biggest decision the club will make in a long time – get the right person in on a long term contract to show the Wolves commitment to the development of the Team the new manager and the fans e.g.13 games & 2 years.

If we are to believe that the original deal was indeed 13 games is it any wonder that the best prospective managers are turning the job down?

Bruce is a failed mercenary – the fans will not back him so bring him in at your peril and fans will vote with their feet.

Win the battle to bring back Mick, c’mon M and M he is still your best choice and you know it! Regrets you have none.

Got to go and console my mate Arsene, he is rather low at the moment. Has he been sacked? Nah. Spot the difference M and M?

Streako – when you build a team of youngsters you do tend to keep them a while to build experience – it teaches wisdom a opposed to in and out with players.

Green something or Wimabigteamweam – that Mick got Fletcher for us! Just think what you are saying -without Fletcher and assists we would be no where.

Wolves were building a team and getting experience – you can not make an instant team of premiership players ( on the cheap for M and M) without taking time and being in the lower half while players play and get the experience! I suppose the same with Club Owners. Knee jerk management is not premier style management M and M!

Perhaps M and M should be reminded of that. You use poor bricks and mortar and you get a shoddy house ( an analogy not a criticism of M’s construction co) but it acts like a house. Over time it can be improved but takes time!
You use the best and you get the best house that lasts! Man U, Man City, Chelsea, QPR, Stoke

Waterbottle, you said Mick would keep us up, so which one of us is it that is now without the rudder?

Still say Walter Smith is the man for the job. After all, any manager who can get my national side up to 14th in the world rankings must have something REALLY special!!!

    Careful what U wish 4

Oh dear oh dear. Needs proven top flight track record, understands the DNA of the club. Well Ronald McDonald has been a top flight restauranteur and is also a clown. Would Jez give him an interview?
Do M&M really know what they are looking for?
The players are saying let’s stay up for Mick….. Really? Where’s that been cos 1 win 11 didn’t say that.
It’s a total farce. Hodgson’s warning ‘Careful what you wish for’ showed more astute understanding of the market. It’s embarrassing.
Forget Poyet, no experience. And McDermott hasn’t proved a thing. Holloway ? Desperate times…

    Joe Wilson's stud marks

Latest rumours have Wolves seeking permission to speak to Gus Poyet regarding the vacant Managers job here. Was this part of the plot when we let Vokes go on loan there, can’t see Poyet getting the job as surely he would recall Sam back to the Mol,and that would seriously unbalance bean counter JM’s balance sheet. Was Mick Mac told he had to farm out Vokesy by our CEO,if so no wonder Curbishley declined the position, having his players chosen by “Player Trader Jez” & no doubt told by Jez who his assistant WILL be.
The longer this saga goes on to apoint the correct candidate,it makes me feel that “our New Manager” installed in time for Newcastle game will probably be our old friend & clipboard T.C. If we don’t lose any heavier than 5,I’m sure the board will feel he is the man for the job full time,as he obviously made an improvement on our previous score.
Please SM. get it sorted quickly, because the longer it takes the more a cynical old ba***rd you are making me.

I have just read an article on the Internet which states that Curbishley was offered the job on Saturday morning, but he rejected it as Wolves were only prepared to offer him a deal for the remainder of this season. If that is the case, Morgan needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask himself what he thinks he’s playing at. It would also explain the official club line that now, there is just as much chance of having a manager in place after the Newcastle game as before it. In other words, they have no idea who to turn to now.
