Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Timing of sacking looks increasingly bizarre
Friday 17th February 2012, 10:54AM GMT.
The timing of Steve Morgan’s decision to sack Mick McCarthy has looked even more bizarre as the week has gone on, writes Wolves blogger Tim Spiers.
It’s been a tumultuous few days at Molineux, what with an emotional farewell to Mick, while his squad remained in mourning, and wild speculation filling the local airwaves and newspaper columns as to who his replacement will be.
Thankfully all this rather masked the fact that we were beaten 5-1 by them lot down the road last Sunday.
I have a feeling the fallout from that will be a bit of a slow burner as it’s been buried in the subconscious of thousands of Wolves fans – I can see us waking up in cold sweats having nightmares about it for years to come.
The shock and anger from that humiliation lasted just 19 hours, before news of Mick’s departure filtered through.
I was asked to speak on radio on that Monday morning about Mick and the derby defeat, an interview which finished just 10 minutes before his sacking was announced.
I’m pleased to tell my fellow Mick-supporting comrades that I was with him to the very end, insisting he should stay until the end of the season, although clearly Morgan and Jez Moxey weren’t taking note.
There have been many tributes made to Mick this week, with most of them praising the sterling job he did in nearly six years at Molineux, something which many may appreciate more and more as the years go by.
It’s clear that, despite his apparent shortcomings as a manager, he commands respect and admiration as a man across the footballing landscape and we were lucky to have him.
Anyway, as Mick said himself on his departure, it’s onwards and upwards now, and from a Wolves perspective that means finding his replacement.
Morgan’s next move will tell us an awful lot about his long term intentions and ambitions for the club.
It will be his first managerial appointment and will set out his blueprint in terms of the style and philosophy he wants to see on the pitch.
Off the pitch it’s clear the now two Ms will stick with their sensible policy of restricting wages and signing young and hungry players, with Jez talking about the ‘Wolves DNA’ like some kind of slightly unhinged scientist.
So the new manager must buy into that and embrace it, which perhaps restricts the variety of candidates somewhat.
As does the timing, which I again I say is rather odd.
If he was going to sack Mick, doing it a couple of months ago would have made far more sense, when the January transfer window was ahead of us and the likes of Mark Hughes and Martin O’Neill were unemployed.
Managers making an impression in lower divisions would have been more accessible, too, because it’s a bit late in the day for the likes of Nigel Adkins, Chris Hughton and Sam Allardyce to be deserting their clubs now.
Likewise two or three months further down the line would have broadened the prospective manager field, too, at the end of the season when unemployed and employed candidates would have been plentiful whatever division we were in.
But in February the managerial cupboard looks pretty bare and some of the names heavily linked with the post do not fill me with any great confidence.
Neil Warnock and Steve Bruce, both rugged old-timers with huge experience, are in the frame but surely we should be setting our sights higher.
The simple argument is that both have failed to convince their owners that they can keep a team in the Premier League this season, so why should they be good enough to get the job done with Wolves?
A move for either, but particularly Warnock who has no history of a prolonged spell in the top flight, would smack of desperation and short-termism.
The work that Bruce did at Birmingham and Wigan should not be overlooked, but he underachieved massively with Sunderland, as O’Neill is busy proving, and doesn’t give off the impression of a man who could lead us to safety and beyond.
His loyalty has always been in question too – he’s abandoned more clubs than Tiger Woods on a bad day at the driving range.
Despite this though he is second favourite for the job with most bookies, behind Alan Curbishley.
It says a lot for the situation we’re in that a man who has been out of work since September 2008 seems likely to get the post.
I was a huge admirer of Curbishley when he was at Charlton and West Ham – he seemed like a very steady pair of hands who liked his teams to play decent football.
You’ve only got to look at Charlton’s slide down the leagues since he left to see the job he did there, while he kept West Ham up against the odds and led them to the top half of the table, before leaving due to differences with the owners.
An excellent CV then, but the nagging doubt in my mind is why hasn’t he had a job since?
A court case relating to his West Ham departure kept him out of action until November 2009, but more than two years have passed since.
Positions at Newcastle, West Brom, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Fulham, QPR, Bolton and Blackburn have all been vacant in that time, but Curbishley either hasn’t applied for them or hasn’t got them.
You have to question whether he has the desire and hunger for a relegation scrap and/or a long term project to establish us as a force in the Premier League.
But for me, due to his record, he’s most realistic candidate of quite a sorry unemployed list of managers, and is therefore the logical choice.
Chris Hughton would have been my preference but it seems he wants to finish the season with Birmingham, and while I’d move heaven and earth for Morgan to tempt his mate Rafa Benitez back into management, that is sadly only a pipe dream.
Wildcards like Lee Clark, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Karl Robinson and Gus Poyet would only come into play if we were relegated, because this isn’t the time to put them in at the deep end of a relegation scrap.
There has been talk of hiring someone until the end of the season, presumably with the added caveat of getting the job permanently if they kept us up.
As much as I’m not keen on the idea of swapping a six-year tenure for a 13-game one, we’re so short of options that it might not be a bad idea.
In which case Morgan would need to find someone who is preferably unemployed, can instantly command the respect of the players, motivate them, has experience at the very top level of football – say, a World Cup – and has previously led underachieving teams to Premier League survival.
Has anybody got Mick McCarthy’s number?

I dont want to slag off Steve Morgan (far from it) but its quite clear to me that Curbs is his manager of choice and perhaps has been for some time.
May be the reason that Curbs hasnt got the other jobs mentioned is by choice if he was sure of a ‘shoe-in’ at Mol’.
Not against him – will support Curbs ifhe gets the job but i hope that more managers are interview other than the named 3 … people like Walter Smith need to be explored (not saying he’s the right man) so lets not just focus on Bruce, Warnock and Curbs

Tim, Tim, Tim….nice but perhaps dim.
You are fortunate to have the opportunity to command such a platform amongst the local media. I would ask you to get a grip and restrain yourself from such a wishy-washy view on the life that is a Wolves fan.
I look forward to your promotion, based on a combination of ability, results, experience, gift of the gab and of course humility, to the title of manager of The Wolves. You are of course the special one.

What a joke of an article ……speculation and tittle-tattle with no real substance. As a life long Wolves fan here is the reality, like it or not!
Wolves are not desperate for cash, and not in the poor situation of Glasgow Rangers or Portsmouth. We would all have loved to sign a whole raft of players (or mercenaries) in the January window, but they wanted too much cash and presumably didnt fancy a basic plus bonus scheme??
If we have are to continue being a well managed and finacially sound club – we need a manager that can work within these constraints and motivate senior players and bring on promising youngsters.
I am sure that with good coaching and tactics from the management – and a lot more physical effort from the players we can do 100% more than we have done to date. Far too many players have “gone missing in action” and no longer seem to want to have the ball and do something with it. They now have a real option work with the management team (whoever that eventually is) and become part of the solution to the problem they have helped create – or be moved on in the summer by the new management team.
I for one cant wait for the new appointment – and for the manager to kick some a**.

Agreed. The only guy who I thought has genuine quality and motivation skills is Chris Houghton and I see that he’s distanced himself.
Oh well, I’m sure that all the numpties that demanded that Mick should go must have some fantastic ideas of a replacement???
What, no? Makes you seem rather silly now then (bit like Morgan and Moxey)
Tim, not a bad article until I read the last paragraph. Surely you cannot still be deluded enough to think that McCarthy has what it takes to keep Wolves up?
He had his chance and we have to be thankful for what he achieved in getting us to the premier league. However, since our arrival progress has been stifled to the point where we are fast heading back to where we came – you can’t be happy with that progress surely??
In terms of the candidates then there is only one that should be considered and that is Curbishley, the other 2 contenders are no better than what we had – get him signed up and give him as much time to work with the players as possible before next Saturday.
Clearly Tim Spiers is Mick’s love child!
All of this shows how out of touch Morgan and Moxey are with the footballing world.
They are only interested in the business side of the club and treat it as a cash generator.
May be after the events of this week the pair of them should sit down and examine their own roles in this seasons demise and if they are honest with themselves i am sure they will agree that a lot of the blame lies at their doors.
Poor investment at the start of the season and a lack of decision making when things started to go wrong come to mind !!!
Can all this pining for mick stop now please, it’s getting a little embarrassing! Yes he took us to the promised land from the wilderness against all the odds! And kept us there but he had lost his way and if reports from earlier in the week are to be believed he’d lost the financial backing of the Morgan last summer, so for me the time was right to let him go with our thanks. Onwards and upwards and Curbishley is the man to take us that next step … No doubt.
Up the Mighty wolves

How anyone can continue to support Mick is beyond me – the only point I agree with is the bizarre timing of the sacking.
Mick should have gone in the summer – as far as I’m concerned he lost the right to continue as manager when he lost the ‘must win’ end of season game with Blackburn. We got out of jail and Morgan should have acted then and allowed a new manager time to bring in some players.
After the good start our form has been appalling and Mick had no clue on how to arrest the slump. Watching him and Clipboard discussing god knows what on the sidelines has slowly grown embarrassing, as has his insistence to play Ward in every position imaginable and have Henry, Edwards and Kightly straight in the team when more able players like Guedioura and Hammill have watched from the bench.
We need to be looking long term and Curbishley in the man for me, break from football or not. If we go for Bruce then Morgan has gone for the cheap option, a failure at this level in my opinion.
this is just a copy of what you wrote before madmick got sacked…..
wise up…..he’s gone, thanks for promotion and all that BUT the guy couldn’t get the team to progress DESPITE spending 5th highest net amount in EPL….
Sentimental clap trap….move on its now history
So onto next manager – my first choice would be Chris Houghton closely followed by Alan Curbishley
Houghton because he is a here and now manager doing an absolutely amazing job a blues in very bad circumstances
The only fear with Curbs is the gap years he has had, although lets not forget he has been a fore runner for the England job!
Also heard that Paul lambert of Norwich has definately been interviewed…
anyway lets wait and see – I reckon within 48 hours the manager will be appoined so the king is dead long live the king…

You talk about MM’s shortcomings as a manager in one breath, then, insisting he should stay to the end of the season.
You were with him to the very end?realy.
We can agree that he should have gone months ago.About 18 of them IMO.
The football has been dreadful to watch for a long time.
Mick did well to get us up,but, thats about it for me.
Plenty of managers have done what MM has done ingetting clubs promoted to the PL.
I hav’n't forgotten that in the “must win game”
against Blackburn last season,we went 3-0 down
and lost the game but stayed up curtesy of Hunt scoring.
I wish Mick well for the future, but,i’m pleased he’s gone.
We might now play some decent football and survive.

For goodness sake, how much worse did things have to get before you stopped defending Mick?
Just look at the players he has brought in and strangled the life out of them, Doyle,Milijas,Hunt,Goudi’Hammil and Johnson to name a few, I may be out on a limb but I look forward to a new manager who is going to pick a team that comprises of the few quality players we do have playing in the right position and to a system that brings the best out of them.
Fed up with watching a team that puts in a shift ie: runs round like headless chickens.

Morgan wants to big us up and then sell us and buy Liverpool.
How we can consider comatose Curbishley I have no idea. The last time he took a proper job, Twitter wasn’t invented and you could still pop into C&A or Woolworths.

Sure MM did a wonderful job for which we should be grateful. And yes too he was a totally decent bloke, honest as they come and fiercely loyal to his players. However the sad fact is that while he was an excellent Championship manager he proved to be totally out of his depth in the Premier League and the tactical naivety he showed against WBA highlighted this fact only too well – playing 3 in midfield (which was effectively 2) against 5 was always going to end in tears. So thanks Mick for a job well done and some great memories but time to move on now I think.

looks odd?? what ever planet are you on, we have been absolutley dire all season, and finally got what was coming last weekend. im suprised it didnt happen sooner, it was for anyone to see the body language of both mick and the players. as far as im concerned it didnt come soon enough. dont get me wrong, mick has done wonders for this club, and i felt extremly sad to hear he’d gone, but its a ruthless business and the time sadly had come.

Not the best of reports I’ve read this week. I’m sure we all, or most of us, admire MM for his down to earth, matter of fact approach, and what he has achieved in his time with us.
In fairness to the Board, they stuck to their policy of long termism, all the way until they could no longer do that, whatever the timing issues.
But the facts are there, and they are undeniable. We were going nowhere in the end, after nearly three seasons. In the relegation zone, leaking goals since September, playing poor football which was agonising to watch
We may feel for MM, but it would be very, very wrong to ring him up!!

I have never been a McCarthy fan but to some extent admire what he has achieved at Wolves. For me though his cons heavily outweigh his pro’s. His stubborness, his arrogance, his inability to see that sometimes he is not always right. The appearnace that he chose the match squad around his favourites and ignored the young and hungry players that Wolves publicly embraced. His determination to fit square pegs in round holes and the fact that after nearly six years we are still without a proven Left Back, astonishing given his defensive role as a player.
I do agree though that the timing of his dismissal is strange. Is it co-incidence that it came on the day Early Bird started, given that so many fans had voiced their opinion that renewal was not an option with McCarthy at the helm. I for one could not stomach another season like this and many around me in the BW stand were the same.
Given that any new manager has to work with what he’s got will prove whether the players actually did agree with McCarthy’s strange tactics and starting eleven.

I rather fancied Martin O’neil or Mark Hughes for the Wolves job.
But be realistic they both want to spend loads of money.
Why did O’neil leave Villa (because he wasn’t given more cash)
Why did Hughes leave Fulham (because he wasn’t given more cash)
Wolves are not going to throw money around.

How can it bizarre to make a change now? Wolves will have or had two weeks in which to find a new manager and get him working with the players. There are 13 games left which is ample points wise to get us out of trouble, if the right man gets chosen. The only bizarre aspect to this story is that it took this long to make what I asgree was a difficult decision. I liked MM and wont forget what he did for Wolves but the team needed a change.
Couldn’t agree with Telford Wolf more, MM may well have got the club into the premiership, and with more than a fair slice of luck kept us in for this the third term, but he is so tactically inept and was never going to progress this team. Some of the comments about not having money in the window is all just b******, he wasted millions on players, of his choosing, then either didn’t play them, or farmed them out on loan, or sold them on for next to nothing, In my view he completely lost the support of knowledgable fans, rpior to christmas when he announced it was Karl Henry and ten others on the team sheet…. what kind of message was that sending to the fringe players. We certainly don’t want Bruce or Warnock, why would we want either of them, listen up Moxey they both got the bullet for taking teams to the edge of relegation, we need someone who is going to play good ball retaining football for starters, not this “hoof” ball that by-passes midfield and gives possession straight back to the opposition. And another point, whoever introduced the tactic of passing from kick-off back to Henners should be down the job-centre too. Curbishley ticks all of the right boxes, stop dithering and get him in place NOW.

I am sick to death of the accolades being paid to Mccarthy, a manager who had lost the plot, and should have been replaced months ago.
I see no one other than Warnock having a chance to save Wolves, unless we approach Terry Venerables, old ‘el tel’ may well be the answer

I hope I am proven wrong, but I agree with Tim. It seems a totally mystifying decision to sack Mick at this stage of the season. I’m really sad to see him go. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we are all chanting out loud for ‘Super Mick’. He may have been the manager, but you can only manage with the tools available to you, and some of those ‘tools’ let him, themselves, and the rest of us down badly, and I’m not just referring to the team. Oh, and the weekly dissenting voices in the stands are as culpable as well. No one forces anyone to part with their money, but to pay out to stir up unrest and jeer the team and the manager has contributed to the situation we now find ourselves in. I have followed Wolves since the seventies, and have been through much worse than some of the younger fans have witnessed over the past few years, but, ‘Telford Wolves’, Wolves forever means supporting the team and the manager when you are there, not deriding and jeering them continually. Leave that for the pub and the workplace, you have made Molineux a sinking ship instead of a fortress recently.

Excellent common sense article, Mick should have gone before Christmas, we have not played well for most of the season. We have now put ourselves on a difficult situation and the management and new manager in a no win situation.
Unless of course we escape, but there as to be something really different happen to get the 15 to 20 points we require from 13 matches three of which are against City, Manure and Arsenal..
Before anyone moans I have been going down the Wolves longer in many cases than a lot of your dads lifetimes.

Can we stop this Mick loving its pathetic.
If he was so good we would not be 3rd from bottom or have a defence that play like a bunch of contenders in an aristocratic twits of the year race.
We can not except the results this season, least of all Sundays. Mick should of gone after the Blackburn game last season when we were pathetically 3-0 down at home at halftime in one of the biggest games of our history.
Im sorry, but move on. All you media and press that became stary eyed just because Mick gave you more time than other managers is not a reason for keeping him.
We are in the do do now, and its time to move on rapid, wipe away the tears and start playing some good football (for once) rather then reading pittyful blogs on yesterdays news.
The king is dead long live the king (Curbishley hopefully)

The ‘numpties’ were not responsible for sacking Mick. He was sacked by the Steve Morgan and/or the board on the basis of his results. Indeed, had he even realised as late as 1:29 like the rest of us (even the numpties) did on Sunday, that his formation was about to hand the middle of the pitch to Albion and lose us the match, then he would probably still be in a job.
Now, if the best plan B Morgan Moxey and co have is to replace him with Bruce, then I will agree with you that we should have kept Mick (at least until the end of the season) and that they have made a massive mistake in sacking him.
If however they can find a new man who is more tactically astute, who can coach our players to defend, pass and move and give them the confidence not to panic and resort to hoof ball and defending our 18 yard line for 45 minutes, then it will be Morgan/the board who have got things right and justified their decision.
Only time will tell which it is to be.

Had more than enough of the crocodile tears for Mick. Now time to move on and look forward to a new regime, which will return us to playing football again and get the most out of what talent we have at the club.

How has it looked ‘even more bizarre’ Tim? It looks exactly the same now as it did then and none of the elements you talk about have changed one iota since Monday. A lot of fair points made, I agree, but the facts are – lose 5-1 at home to that bag of spanners down the road on top of a garbage season and a half of dross football and he just had to go. Yes, they should have sacked him sooner – 90 odd per cent of us knew and said that. He could even have done the decent thing and resigned, but with the media still mostly onside, that was never likely. But the hang on to the bitter end option disappeared as an option after that shameful capitulation. We need a proper clear out of the backroom; Moxey might say its a well-run club, tight ship etc… but surely the aim of any football club is to get it right on the pitch, end of.

I have attended Molineux for over 50 years and I can’t believe all the sentimental claptrap being written about Mick Mc Carthy. Wolves employed Mick to manage our Football Team; not to befriend dog walkers and fellow mountain bikers on nature trails (many of whom didn’t even attend matches) or to be the funniest quip maker on Sky. Yes, Mick is a great bloke who did a great job in stabilising the Club post Hoddle and in taking us to the Premiership, but he had flat lined for three years, making no progress in that time whatsoever.
Whilst his bargain basement purchases have been high-lighted, no one is making reference to the big expensive transfer failings like Van Damm, Molyenko, and that Austrian beanpole who so poor I can’t even remember his name (and I sponsored his shirt!). Look closely at the statistics, they belie the myth he wasn’t given money. My bet is that Morgan was concerned Mick wasn’t using the money wisely. That £600k on ‘one for the future’ Icelandic player (who looks no better than what we have in our reserves) would have been better saved towards a quality already the finished article player.
The stats don’t lie, in 4 seasons in the Prem [3 with us and 1 with Sunderland] he failed to make any impact and did not get either team above 6th from bottom. For all his attributes, he just wasn’t a Premier Manager. Some of the National papers have concentrated on Mick’s Prem record , which surely is the criteria he should be judged on, as opposed to what a wonderful bloke he is? Of all the managers since the formation of the Premier League that have managed over 100 Premiership games, he had the poorest managerial record of the lot. His concentration on survival (rather than progress) was total, and he annoyed me for the contempt he showed to the cup competitions which are part of our rich history. We didn’t even have a modest cup run in the past 3 years to cheer us up against the drudgery of continual struggle in the League.
After Sunday’s humiliation, Mick’s time was up, when you add that defeat to the clear general lack of progress of the team he entirely assembled, that, on the strength of Sunday, in a local derby, showed not just a lack of quality, but a lack of fight too. This is why Mick had to go now, not at the end of the Season. Sure let’s all look back fondly in the future over Mick’s pre-Premiership time and his qualities as a person , but in the immediate future let’s concentrate on pulling together and getting behind the new manager to try and stay in the Premier League, and then show some Season on Season progression.

What do you expect? Benitez? We are not that big of a club innthe eyes of the higher rate Managers, Curbs also probably didn’t want to drop down a league plus maybe the other jobs didn’t suit him.
Maybe for once that this club took a gamble on someone new like Clark who’s sacking at Huddersfield looks more bizarre than sacking Mick. If Wolves were to get an experience number two for Lee Clark then I would go for him, but don’t see it happening if Moxey is running the search, he doesn’t seem to have the courage to give it to, as he would put it ‘a novice’ personally I think someone new could just be the tonic and breath of fresh air that the club needs rather than going for same type over and over again.
However out current three mentioned in the article Curbs would be the best option.

Yes so we all love and respect Mick, now for God’s sake let’s move on. His place in Wolves history is safe, but we will always look back knowing that he was out of his depth once he got us promoted. Has for Hughes and O’Nelly we would never have got them because they would not have brought into the young and hungry policy – they are money managers, managers that buy success.
The problem is with a lot of fans the season consists of two matches – the unmentionables home and away, their season is now over, like the s*&t fans, to beat the Wolves is the highlight of their season – well I have a message for them, they are disillusioned if they think they beat us – they didn’t, we beat ourselves by not turning up, any “Wolves”? fan could have put a team together and beat us on Sunday.
Put another way – if we had played like that and beat the s*&t then Mick would still be in a job, and the children would not have been outside the ground whelping.

Its bleeding hearts bloggers like Tim Spiers that have kept McCarthy in a job at Molineux when it was clear two years ago that he wasnt up to the job lets be clear he did well getting us up but he is not a Premiership Manager the statistics bear that out so if we had kept him to the end of the season we would have been relegated absolutly no doubt at least we have a fighting chance of staying up if we can get the right manager.I agree with Tim that Chris Hughton would be the best fit for Wolves but Alan Curbishly has an impeccable track record at premiership level and long term would make Wolves into a top ten team the only negative would be that it might take him a couple of seasons to get things right at the molineux as the coaching staff need a complete overhaul and their are a few players that need moving on and a few that need to be bought for key positions like LB and midfield.

Mr Morgan obviously didn’t want to spend anymore money so he waited till the window had shut then swung the axe. Wolves were going backwards and will continue to go backwards because Morgan like Mr Hayward b4 him wants to compete at the top half of the prem by spending as little as possible.
It never worked for Jack, and I’m not saying he didn’t spend. But it’s clearly obvious that he doesn’t want to spend the money needed to be a top half prem team!
I know Mick bought some duffers but was that because that was all he was allowed to buy? We all know he was showing interest in better players and I’m sure would have bought better players given the chance but unfortunately he wasn’t!
I love the wolves as much as any fan but it is clear to see we are not going to be the club we all aspire to be.
Sort it soon Mr Morgan or that lovely new stand you’ve built ( which I see staying like it is for the next 10 years or more!) is going be empty every week!
Do I love wolves? More than life itself!
Am I ashamed of recent results? More than ever!

It’s not a case of who is the manager, but where they take you and the previous manager had took us as far as he could almost 2 seasons ago.
Let it go Tim, the McCarthy era is over, some (even players) will say “thank god for that”.

lol what a joker this blogger is.
I had thought he had got over his love affair with Mick but even after being thumped by Albion he’s still deluded enough to think Mick was the best man for the job.
May I suggest now we’ve finally got rid of our useless manager we turn our attention to finding a new blogger?

Right, Tim, enough is enough.
I enjoyed your “Farewell ‘super Mick McCarthy’” article as I felt it was a fitting tribute and a deserved thank you for what he did for our club.
I also agree here in part that the timing was poor – Mick should have gone in January, October or even last summer, be ruthless after he kept us up and bring someone in to push the club on in the Premier League. I think he deserved till the end of the season after being left in the post so long.
But we’ve got to stop pining for him – the decision has been made. He may have the experience to keep us up (although he’s had the tactics to get us into a relegation fight every season we’ve been there). It was painfully obvious Mick had taken the club as far as possible last year – Swansea completely outplayed us with a modern brand of organised football that the Wolves midfield and defence looked like it had never seen before.
For this reason I don’t think we should pine for him. I agree the timing wasn’t ideal (couldn’t we have lost to WBA in October?) but you can’t question the decision as you seem to later in the article. Time was clearly up ages ago.
For the future, we’ve got to move on and give the new man time. He’s inheriting a group of players that got us into this mess so cannot be blamed if he cannot save us. And there cannot be anyone saying “we should have kept Mick” because comments like that don’t solve the issue, and it must be remembered that it was his work that got us into needing a new man with 13 games to go.
It’ll be eventful, but I genuinely think Curbishley is the man as he has a record, a bit like Mick did, of developing clubs in the top tier or second tier (wherever we end up) and playing the right style of football. 3 years out has little meaning to me, he’ll have watched games and being the studious tactician he was at Charlton, he’ll be prepared for the teams we’ve got to face. I personally would have taken Allardyce last May, but not Curbishley has to be the only real choice.
If Morgan was so dissatisfied with McCarthy, as it now seems to be the case, then I agree it would have made more sense to do the dirty deed in December. Alternatively waiting until the end of the season would certainly have provided more options irrespective of whether we survived the drop or not.
As I mentioned on a previous blog, I can’t help but get the feeling that a deal has already been done with Curbishley, and that the club are just going through the motions.

Less of the Morgan economics, please, people!
“We spent this and that.”
Transfer fees are just that.
Wage bills can be FAR higher. We don’t pay enough to be annoyed at how Mick’s done.
Fact is we made a profit first season in the prem after spending £16mill.
Mick spoke about buying Prem experience, but the budget never came for that.
We have to be realistic. If we are not having any debt, and we’re spending money on stadium rather than players.
Mick did a good job. His hands were tied, though.
Aren’t we doing better this season (at least average position-wise) than last two?
I don’t thik many could have done better in his position.
I’d gamble on Curbishley now, though.

May I suggest that everyone reads number 11 post. I was intending to write exactly the same thoughts but post 11 says it all.
No matter how kind, honest, well thought of, friendly, supportive etc etc etc it is the knowledge and how to use that knowledge that ensures success. I am afraid that in my thoughts MM did one good thing– he got us promoted, but what else?
Sorry Tim, but you have lost the plot. Mick only looks good to those who have never known better times.
However, he did get us into the Premiership when so many others have failed. But he is not a Premiership manager; that needs advanced footballing thought, which “put in a shift” was not able to handle. He has his place in our history as the manager who got us back into the Premiership, and now we must move on.
Our next manager has to have two main assets: he has to be able to inspire our shell-shocked and broken team into surviving in the Premiership, none of us want to go back down to the cold, dark nether-lands again!
The manager must also bring us some cultivated football, it was the final recognition of how bad our hoof-ball was when the ferals (neither black country or brummies) gave us a lesson in possession football that will haunt knowledgeable Wolves fans for years to come!
So it seems the only candidate who has achieved both of those things in the past is Alan Curbishley and I just hope that Moxey and Morgan doesn’t try to do it on the cheap and hires somebody no better than McCarthy.

I’m worried, I’m not sleeping at night. We need someone soon and for me AC is the man for the job. As for the others names in the hat, I’m not impressed. I am far from a knee-jerk reactionary Wolves fan (having watched them since 1963), but I simply cannot see why anyone would still support Mick McCarthy who clearly failed at Molineux and his pedigree at Sunderland clearly indicated he was devoid of achieving a turnaround in fortunes.
There is little doubt that MM should have been relieved of his duties last May when only a late goal at White Hart Lane from a failed Russian saved Wolves from the drop that was on the cards all season. No one should forget that.
All of this season has been a slow walk into disaster which was accelerated by Sunday’s events. McCarthy could never stay at the helm after that result.
The way forward now ?
A short term appointment until we know which league we know exactly which league we are playing in. Our current form indicates that we all know which league that maybe.
McCarthy certainly achieved promotion and managed to keep us in the Premiership, sometimes more by luck than judgement. But I am afraid his decisions at times were bizarre and his confidence in out of form players playing out of position defied logic. And as for motivation, anyone who viewed Man U in Amsterdam will know the way you can motivate a team at half time after a poor first half. Just how many poor first halves did Wolves fans have to endure over the last three seasons ?

mick was sacked for the following reasons, 1. the team had lost any momentum since the opening day, since spurs at home we had lost the fighting spirit we’d had in previous seasons, imo the way the captaincy was changed has a lot to do with this, i’m no Henry basher nor am a massive fan of his, but we had a togetherness with him as captain and that has disapperaed.
2. the signs were there from the last gasp survival, the team was not strong enough and two signing’s wasnt going to make it better. we havent ( to quote Hansen ) the quality needed to survive again.
3. Micks numpty calling was stupid and turned many fans who had been on the fence against him, you dont turn on your own supporters in this day and age,
4. Morgan stated the results werent good enough and they didnt improve so he knew it was coming,
5. the timing isnt great but when would it have been good, start of the season or before the transfer window shut, we all know that wolves were not going to hand a new manager a war chest, if so then they would have given it to mick surely ? a change was needed he’d lost the fans and the players esp after the derby result.
6.if he had stayed with the fans turning on him it would have got worse and worse, what ever youre opinion on mick i bet none of you could have put up with the abuse wolves fans can dish out, and Mick didnt deserve to be treated this way.
7. this IMO is the biggest reason he had to go he bought in someone who he thought was a leader and he isnt, roger the missing link johnson at lot of us thought when he signed, but he has no leadership qualities, he cant lift the side when needed and is to put it mildly, dreadfull, Craddock played 1 premier game this season and did more in this game than Johnson all season. Mick bought another rubbish defender, and was to stubborn to drop him. I’m not blaming it all on roger cause mick signed him after all, but after seeing Bassong play why on earth did we not try harder to sign him,
We can all point the finger at one man or at several but as a club were in unchartered waters the club needs to stay up or all the good work of the last 6 years is going to unravel, cheers mick for all you did, i didnt always see it your way but, the good out weighs the bad times and i wish you all the best. I hope we can do as A####n did last season if not i fear the worst.
anyhow, as the legend jimmy Greaves once said, its a funny old game saint, its a funny old game.

What a load of claptrap. How can anyone say Mick should have stayed?!?!
Mick did amazing to get us to the Prem League from what Hoddle horrow left us. Massive thanks and praise for that. He more than deserved his chance in the prem and the money to try and make it work – both of which he got.
Once promoted – he spent over £40M (net) in 3 years, we made no progress at all, brought noone through from the academy.
Norwich and Swansea have shown how things can be done and they have spent anything.
We have taken 14 points from the last 22 matches and got thrashed by ‘them lot’ 5-1 at home.
How can anyone say that Mick should have stayed? Incredible dumness.
Steve M should be applauded for sticking by him. I’d have got rid long ago and people like Tim here would have been moaning even more!!!

Mick thanks for getting us up, but after 3 seasons of survival football and head scratching selection and tactics and no progression hardly surprising you were sacked, shame i had hoped youd step down at the end of last season, but never mind. Love the way some supposed football reporters are now turning on morgan, funny there the same reporters who have turned on mick for the man u selection, and labelled the team dirty, funny how these reporters switch sides when it suits them, The club was as loyal as it could be, the results werent getting better and as morgan said they needed to improve so no surprise he was sacked. The one thing that is coming out after micks departure is that he appears to be a regarded in high esteem by his peers, all very well and i can vouch he is a really nice chap, having met him on more than one occasion. Cheers mick but we all saw it coming, seems funny how many people who have been on his case in the past are now sticking up for him, its a funny old game saint, its a funny old game………..

We would have been relegated if MM had stayed in charge. 3 wins & no clean sheets since August, how can anyone say he would have kept us up. They need to appoint Curbs now, he ticks all the boxes. Once he again he fought & won an 18 month court case against West Ham, then has turned down offers since. They break means he will be fresh and he has watched lots a lot of football as a pundit. If Mick had stayed until the end of the season we might as well have started planning for the Championship and given the fact that in the transfer window we did just loan signings – so we had no big loss in value at season’s end – then we were doing just that under Mick.
Yes, the man has been part of our lives here for five and a half years but even in the Championship winning season his decisions and tactics were totally baffling. At the end of the day he was out of his depth and we were just not improving no matter who we bought or what was spent. The Warnock sacking was more mystifying.
We had lost so many games that being trumped by the Albion was the last straw.
The only thing wrong with the timing was he should have gone well before Christmas.

Maybe we can have a new blogger who talks sense, with our new manager. Instead of one who jumps on the bandwagon.. I remember Tim following Mick’s lead, calling everyone numpties. I am sick like many of hearing grown men cry over the sacking of someone. He was sending us down, we lost against the albion, because we was wide open. No midfield, wingers standing about doing nothing.. How much pressure do you want to put on your defence. We need to shut up shop in midfield first.. Instead of blaming everything on the four defenders. The albion showed us that day, everything that is wrong with us, they showed us how tactically, you can stop any team. They filled their midfield, they took us to pieces on the break.. Exactly what we must do in the coming matches, if we have any chance of surviving.
We are not cut adrift, we are not certainties to go down, we have as much chance of staying up as a group of teams.. So get behind the new manager and let Mick go.

Mick has done an amazing job and I will always appreciate his work for our club.
The first thing a new Manager HAS to address is our defence. I would change it completely and have Zubar (rb) Craddock (cb) Johnson (cb) Bassong (lb) as we have two full backs with pace to cover the centre halves lack of but very good ability in the air with Karl Henry sat infront.
I think Alan Curbishley is the man to take us forward and he has done great work previously with both Charlton and West Ham. He’s a shrewd operator and I can see Morgan opening the Purse strongs a little more to a Manager that he has taken on. Our strongest team for the rest of the season:
Henno
Zubar
Craddock
Johnson
Bassong
Hammill (Foley away from home)
Henry
O’Hara
Jarvis
Doyle (behind)

If you wanted MM to stay why not say so at the beginning of your article instead of waiting until the last sentence? Once we dispense with all the congratulations for getting us into the Premiership why not take an honest stance on our performance since we came into the division under the leadership of MM?
The fact is we deserve to be languishing yet again in the bottom three by dint of our inconsistent performances thanks to the fact that we have barely survived with a largely Championship squad. And , more than that, the quality ( or lack of) of our play has been truly atrocious. And if you do not believe me, go back into the archives on these pages where countless loyal fans have complained bitterly about the rubbish that has been served up by this team on too many occasions.
We are in an impossible position right now and no matter who comes in it will be a miracle if we stay up. I hope it can happen for all the loyal supporters and I especially hope we can start playing quality football with a Manager who knows what he is doing.

What is wrong with you Tim (and anyone else that is questioning getting rid of Mick or the timing of it)?
What a load of claptrap.
Mick did a great job getting us to the Prem after the Hoddle horror show. He deserved some time and cash to develop us into a Prem league team; which is what he promised he would deliver.
3 years and £40M (net) later, noone coming through the academy, 14 points out of 22 games, humilation against the scum down the road … and you say that the timing is bizarre?!?!
I would have got rid long ago so it’s a massive credit to Mr Morgan that he gave him so long. You would have ridiculed the timing even more if he had got rid earlier… and you say the timing is bizarre!?!?
Final food for thought – Guess how many games were left in the season when the scum down the road brought Hodgson in to save their season…13…the same as we have left right now…and you say the timing is bizarre!?!?
Tell me this Tim (and other numpties that agree with him), given the facts above when would have been the right time?

Fiscal security is a sound policy on which to build and protect our future. HOWEVER, in accounting we have a principle called “Opportunity Cost.” It can be defined as the cost of any activity measured in terms of the value of the next best alternative foregone (that is not chosen). It is the sacrifice related to the second best choice available. In other words, and in our situation, the choice of not running the club into the danger of financial ruin by overspending has to be looked at as opposed to what will happen financially if we go down to the Championship, and the resultant loss of revenue. In other words, we spend only £10 Million, say, on two players, and a further £12 million on wages for them over three years. That’s an outlay of £22 million over the three years. Another three players would therefore cost us £33 million. £55 Million sounds a lot of money, and it is. However, if we lose the opportunity of £60 Million per annum in Sky money alone, the Opportunity cost is -£5 million in one year, even if all is paid up-front, less parachute payments, still leaving us in profit, less other overheads.
Another means of looking at our opportunity costs is to take a look at the number of journeyman players we have brought in. For every one that makes it we are quids in. For every three at one or £2 Million that don’t make it though, we might as well have spent what we spent on three, for one £6 Million player.
A different way might be to take players who are approaching the end of their current contract, and paying larger wages over four years, but lower transfer fees. If you can get someone who might cost £6 Million, but pay £2 Million on transfer fees, rather than the current club getting nothing, that’s an extra £25K per week over four years on top of the same amount you would have paid a lesser player. Thus, if you were going to buy a £2 Million player and pay him £25K per week, you pay the same fee, but get a £6 Million player with no further outlay than a £6 Million player at £25K per week.

Mick’s hands were tied? What about Lambert, Rodgers and Hodgson who all had smaller budgets?
Mick did a great job but appeared to run out of ideas for the next stage. He had more backing than a lot of other managers and that is a simple fact. All managers would like more backing than they get.
Let’s not forget that Mick let Elliot Bennett and Andrew Surman go as they weren’t up to the required standard for his squad. Lambert then picked them up for Norwich because they improved his squad – now they are both regulars in a Norwich side about 300 points and 5 years of development ahead of us.

What we need right now is a tactician. That must be obvious to all followers. The new manager can’t do anything about the squad, he has the players there is. We need someone who can use them better, who has better understanding of different players capabilities. Mick has done a lot for Wolves and deserves credit for his passion but he has made a lot of mistakes when recruiting players, he has been too slow in changing the course when on the wrong track and he has failed to establish us as a solid PL team. Mick has had a very British/Irish approach and judging from these three seasons we need to broaden the horizon. Several of our players today simply aren’t good enough, they make too many mistakes.

This thread just shows how diverse the opinions are amongst us Wolves Supporters. Some are sensible and some are downright laughable (IMO !!)
One thing we have to agree on, whoever the manager is he has the squad of players he has…and that’s it. Unless there are any out of contract players floating around (Malbranque ??)
Naughty boy Henry has to come back in. The space he left behind against Liverpool and Albion was emabarrassing. There are calls to give him back the captaincy, but, a new manager probably won’t do that and risk destroying whatever confidence Johnson still has. As we saw on Sunday playing three strikers was a complete no-no and for me, sadly, Milijas has had enough chances.
Having said that we all know a new manager can often get performances out of players we never expected.

Looks like we all know who the next manager will be, lets just get on with it. We all need to pull together now, to keep us where we belong.

I, for one am glad Mcarthy has gone! Never mind the emotional outfall blah blah blah!
This club is in dire straights because of him, his style of football, hoof n hope, and his ability to buy sufficient players to play at this level. The dross he has purchased are nearly gone except a few but do not forget that at least eight of the current squad are from when we were in the fizzy.
Also the mind set of Morgan and Moxey! Againg Moxey is spouting about young and hungry, working within the confines of not paying the going rate for quality! I’m sorry if i sound negative but realistically the dumb, militant, almost arrogant attitude of our owner and ceo absolutely dumbfound me. A new manager, who ever he may be, will not be able to do what they, in their narrow minds, wants them to do because of the tight fisted policy of not wanting to pay. We have been left in a right dilema and i cannot see any new manager turning it around, if he does, fantastic but
it does not look good. The timing of Mcarthy’s departure and unwilling to pay will be this clubs downfall. Moxey and Morgan still have championship morals, attitudes and stigmas. We will not do well under their regeime.
YOU REAP WHAT YOU SEW!

99 – Chris Hoggard, you are correct that “Opportunity Cost” has its origins in Economics, but it is a principle that we use in accountancy as part of costing.

As has been said in countless previous posts thanks very much for all you’ve done MM, but you were clearly past your sell by date. The time for sentiment has now gone, lets get on with supporting the new manager (who ever he may be), because without the fans behind him and the team, he is doomed to failure before he even starts. In previous posts I have stated who I’d like to see come in, but its not up to me or anyone other than Morgan for that matter, so speculation is pointless. Its just a game of wait and see, and hopefully who ever comes in will immediatley get the backing of the fans, regardless of whether he was their first choice or not. We (or at least what seemed like the majority of the posters in here) wanted, no demanded, a change of manager in order to save our season, well we have got our wish. So no matter who comes in, he must have our full support and backing regardless of the results (at least till the end of the season anyway).

It may well be the powers that be may select a long term or a short term manager. The priority is obviously to preserve our Premier league status and we may survive by default.ie.Other teams around the bottom getting worse results. This is more about adding sticking plaster to the problem. The major problem still lies with the higher management who i feel are not up to the task of running a Premier league club. With MM at the helm we got to a position of inertia and the management must take the responsible for the ill-timing of the decision.
There can never be a good time to sack a manager because usually it means that the team are in trouble which is obviously our situation. The record of MM in the premiership is very very poor and after the humiliation against WBA the management had no alternative but to grasp the nettle and sack him.In the longer term it may be proved that MM was not to blame but a lack of investment in the squad was the real problem and no manager could maintain a premiership presence with such a low budget. All may shortly be revealed.

First of all it is a big surprise to offer Steve Bruce an interview which in my opinion is a waste of time. Once Alan Curbishley has hinted he would be interested with the Wolves job and that the Chairman has reckoned he is the calibre man for the job that lies ahead is enough to suggest no time should be lost. But let’s hope they just listen to what Bruce can tell them but for us fans he is never to take the helm of Wolves. As to your article concerning the bizarre way of the time of the sacking of McCarthy I think he was given ample time to stop the slide but at home Wolves have been more than a shadow. And all those fans who still think and criticize Morgan just as a businessman should see other examples to their eyes when Portsmouth again and the famous Glasgow Rangers in serious troubles. Wolves apart from their struggle which is normal because we have to work on a BUDGET and not to make a stupid race against the likes of Man City and others. I am sure if Morgan leads Wolves to bankruptcy these same criticizing fans will come in force to pillory him for that fateful end. At least if relegation is to happen we are a club not in debts and have the funds to regain the EPL. Let’s hope the Director gives the job to A. Curbishley.

The situation we find ourselves in is down to 5 factors:-
i) Steve Morgan – not sanctioning a bit more budget in the Summer.
ii) Jez Moxey – we are never going to be a mid-table team on a maximum £40k salary cap and getting loans and cheap recruits
iii) Mad Mick – picking his favourites and abandoning the likes of Doherty, Hammill and Guerdioura
iv) Clipboard – tactically inept
v) The players – need I say anymore
The only positive is that there are 4 other teams in the thick of it still. If we do appoint the right person and Clipboard goes, we might have a chance?

Name ONE so called ‘Young and Hungry’ player that Wolves have signed since being promoted.
I can name lots that we farm out or get rid of, they are called our Youth players, but I can’t think of one we’ve signed that have been any good since promotion.
We need to stop using this ridiculous phrase. It was created by Moxey. It basically means cheap and very average.
In fact, Cheap and Average, makes far more sense to me than ‘Young And hungry’
Okay, I could accept ‘Young and Hungry’ if we were Arsenal, Frimpong being a great example, but come on, this is Wolves and we all know we want players on the cheap that are willing to playt for less than £10,000 a week.

The timing was not odd, it was blatently a knee jerk reaction to the 5-1 dfeat to Albion.
It was obviously the final straw with Morgan & many fans.
A lot depends on how much importance you want to put on that one game. If it really is all that matters then he had too go. They all had to go. Morgan as well… and knock down the new stand too in shame!
But then again, the reality is…it’s just another game we lost. Get over it. We were brilliant 1st half v Villa. Best I’ve EVER seen from a Wolves side in 30+ years. (the fact we still lost ‘our best ever game’ is obviously still a big problem though), but we know there’s a half decent side in there somewhere. So I hardly think Mick’s left a big mess like some are claiming, just as Steve Bruce hardly left a big mess for O’Neill.
Before the Albion game things were actually looking pretty good. I’d even go as far to say 15 minutes into the second half when we were pushing for a winner things were looking great & the season looked promising. Then we had a last 20 minute collapse where fans as much as players threw the towel in and gave up. Completely understandable, but it changed history.
So the fact is we are only in the relegation zone on goal difference with 1/3 season left. Not great…but not all doom & gloom.

The replies have been more entertaining than the original blog. Onwards and upwards; let’s see some progress while the Early Bird window is open to help me make my decision for next season. 14, I agree, He did indeed strangle the life out of those players, especially Doyle and Milijas, and hopefully the new man can recharge them.
Curbishley would be OK and being away from the game did not seem to hurt O’Neill, who would have been the perfect choice. The timing is not good, not many games and no option to get new players.
Bruce, Warnock no thanks, don’t know why Chris Houghton would come we may pass him coming up if we go down, Benitez managed to foul up a pretty good Liverpool team with his constant tinkering and with a much bigger budget than he would get here he couldn’t win anything.
I wouldn’t mind Ray Wilkins getting a chance, not sure what he did at Chelsea, but the have not been the same team since he left their sideline.
All we can do is hope the new guy can bring some structure to a group of players that have given so much in the past three years in a structureless environment. I think we will stay up.

Tim this article just backs what has been said so many times before, you are a very a good writter, you would make a great campaign manager for a politician, but you really are a terrible report.
Your articles are nothing short of propaganda based on your personal view, no substance and even less facts.
Factually MM has the worst managerial record in premier history as far as games played/won etc go, curby, bruce and warnock all have better stats in the prem than MM, if you are refering to internation duties, yes mm had one reasonable spell for ireland and i reitterate reasonable and short lived.
If it wasnt for the blind faith and pure propoganda that you have been spewing in you relentless effort to blame everythingfor wolves shortcomming sehero’s MM maybe mm would have been sacked earlier, as he clearly should have been going on performances at the end of last season.
Finally No.6 do you always answer your own questions? well i think as with mm we would have been humilated even futher plus 99% certs for relegation if i had been offered the car park attendant to replace mmm after the drubbing from the baggies i would have gladly accepted it.
P.S. I think Curby will deliver far better performance than we have seen so far as the players will have decent tactics,
Report abuse
Oh Tim I despair!! The timing looks bizarre? How naive are you? The timing was perfect. We all know that economics / profit NOT football is the driver here. Morgan had lost faith in McCarthy but clearly wouldn’t pull the trigger in January as that would have cost more in knee jerk transfer fees so he waited for the perfect storm – which duly arrived last Sunday.
You can just hear Moxey saying to Morgan ‘now we’ve done what the fans demanded we can stimulate season ticket renewals that otherwise would not have happened & when the fans see who we are bringing in will restore their faith to generate further income and who knows may even help us stay in the PL’. And guess what arrived through my letter box this morning? Yes my shiny Early Bird Renewal letter.
Yes it’s important to balance the books but equally wise investment is also required something that MM could not sustain so he paid the ultimate price.
On a football note I hope Curbishley gets the opportunity because I believe if he does he will engender a new spirit & belief in the club. We do have good players Hennessey, Foley, O’Hara, Milihas, Hamill, Hunt Doyle, Fletcher & Jarvis. They possess the ability to keep the ball & play an attractive type of football we have been starved of in recent years.
With an injection of leadership, optimism & confidence from the new manager we could see these players inspire Wolves to play bright cultured football which could yet save us from relegation.
However my biggest concern is how the defence can be shored up with the current players available. The # 1 objective must be to keep clean sheets – if we can start doing that then we can still survive but it’s a BIG if……………
The jury on my early bird remains very firmly out until I see who the new manager is & the fact that the dismissals have only been half completed.

Unless they have interviewed someone who has’nt been mentioned over the last couple of days it has to be Curbishley for me.
Bruce was given a fair amount of money during his time at Sunderland, far more than McCarthy and they seemed to be heading for relegation.
As much as i dislike Joey Barton, he slaughtered Warnock when he got sacked for his tactics and so on and that’s from a player who Warnock bought to the club.
Get Curbishley in and overhaul the coaching and scouting system even if it costs Morgan and Moxey a few quid.

Tim, What a load of sanctimonious rubbish! Who are you trying to suck up to?
I am sick to death of all the drivel that is being written recently about how wonderful McCarthy was and its a breath of fresh air to read a lot of the articles on here today who agree with me.
“I was with him at the end” – Jesus, you are my hero! The guy has moved on not died! Maybe you should go with him. Utter rubbish! you’ll be calling for a knighthood or sainthood next.
McCarthy did well to get us up, but in this league he hadn’t got a clue. For three seasons we have been in a relegation scrap with no decent football being played, ludicrous tactics and team selection and a blatant disregard for the fans.
I just hope that the next manager will have more respect for the fans of this great club and not openly admit that he couldn’t care less what they think! As soon as he started calling us “numpties” and “mindless idiots” he had lost my respect – and its people like you and the Express & Star reporters who on the one hand, are happy to pass on this derogatory information to us and then preach how wonderful the guy was, who really make me sick. One reporter even mentioned McCarthy’s inclusion in the Hall of Fame. Utter drivel!
Dave Jones also got us up and if he’d been given the money that McCarthy has had, he would have done a better job – and without the fan-disrespect. They both got us up and didn’t do very much afterwards for different reasons. Should Jones be included in the Hall of Fame?
McCarthy has gone! Get over it! Unfortunatley Conner is still here at the moment, but I personally see only better times ahead.
Tactics such as not passing back to the goal-keeper from the kick-off will be a magic start.

So Mr MORGAN think positive and appoint CURBISHLEY with Dougie FREEDMAM.

I get the sentiment but I think you have forgotten what the bottom line is for any football team manager.
Pure and simply it is to win games.
The timing of the sacking actually gives us 2 weeks to find a replacement
Why was he sacked?
Mick wasnt winning enough games
Mick spent a lot of money which did not improve the squad.
We lost 7 home games this season
He failed to bring through any home grown players apart from hennessey.
I’m alarmed that you seem to be in mourning over mick losing his job and not the predicament he has left this club in with 13 games to go.
I feel sorry for whoever gets the job as they will have to pick up the pieces of the mess Mick has left us in.
A shoddy defensive that cant keep a clean sheet
A midfield that cant keep possession or pass a football.
You find fault with bruce, curbs and co.
but even if you got benitez, capello, walter smith I still think it would be amongst their biggest acheivemments ever to keep this club up with the squad we have.

I understand that Mick’s gone and that we now need to move on. But whilst plenty of people on here have seemingly got their wish, the fact is there are others – myself included – who have not. You (who wanted Mick out) might well believe the rest of us to be deluded but you’ve been banging on and on saying ‘I told you so’ for years so the very least you can do is show us some common courtesy and allow us to speak. And please don’t accuse us of shedding “crocodile tears” when we’re not being hypocritical at all. I wanted Mick to stay – and for years to come. I’m absolutely gutted that he’s gone. Devastated in fact. I’ll be looking to get behind and support Mick’s successor, but I have to say that I’m far from convinced that any of the three currently being interviewed are better than Mick. Saying that, I’m praying that it’s Curbishley. If it’s not, rest assured I’ll most likely be back on here quoting Roy Hodgson.

But some of the criticism has been VERY unfair..its important to remember that Mick is RELATIVELY SPEAKING a fairly young manager and an inexperienced prem manager…he s about the same age as chris hughton i believe..with sunderland he had limited funds and with rep of ireland you stat fans will find his win record is actually not bad ..and better than some well known managers..mick was learning along with the players..maybe he didnt learn quickly enough..but i reckon he ll be back ..maybe with leeds or huddersfield or a national side and he will do well…he has a decent reputation for a reason..like someone posted on here..it wont be you or me in charge of a pro football team this season..but mick will… Do you thinl jamie o hara and roy hodgson are muppets too? “a fantastic manager” .. What happened to the commitment to spend money at the club that was a condition of Morgan taking it over for nothing? It’s no wonder we are in trouble with no significant signings, a back line that is leakier than a Dutch dyke and a Chief Exec who’s only claim to fame is that he has the lowest wage bill in the league. The problem is not Mick but is Moxey and Morgan. How about putting a bit of money into the club? Morgan is using the club to award himself lucrative building contracts but there is little or no investment into building a premiership team. How demoralising to have halted the new stand and fired the manager – sadly it looks like curtains for us and we all know that it can be a long haul back up.

With any manager there never is a right time for removing them in the eyes of a proportion of fans. Warnock had a reasonable following at QPR and for my money he was far more harshly treated than McCarthy.
It would have been better had the decision on MM been made earlier, much earlier, but not to have made it at all would have been the greater folly in my opinion.
Having said that the process of obtaining his replacement is hardly advancing at electric pace!!

So Neil Warnock has gone to Leeds. Phew!!!!! That might have been a narrow escape.

see we are dillying and dallying in getting a new manager. Just shows the ineptitude of the board at Wolves. I thought the idea was sack mick now to give the new manager time with the team, prior to our trip to the sports direct arena. At this rate clipboard connor will take charge for that game, god help us. Why did Morgan sack mad mick if he did not have a plan b in place. Oh that’s right Morgan is taking his cue’s from mick tactics on the pitch. Just laughable really, but what do we expect from the clowns running the club.

Really ?
Your out of your depth, son. Nrext weeks Beano will be out soon. That’ll keep you occupied.

Worryingly Bruce has gone from 7/2 to 1/7 with some bookies this morning.
So it looks like he is our new manager!!!!
Not good, out of the frying pan into the fire springs to mind.

Fozzy Bear – Corned Beef is just as entitled to an opinion as you are, right or wrong. You can disagree with someone without getting personal!

The PLAYERS cocked it up this season. It was not about management nor tactical nouse. Poor form, under-performance by every player, bar Hennessey and Fletcher, inconsistency, lack of leadership, silly mistakes, lack of confidence. We play wide men (wingers) yet how many times do they get to thye by-0line to make a cross (statistically where the most goals come). The new guy should DEMAND better quality and far more crosses from these guys. Jarvis is so predicatable with his fright of going to the line. He cuts back for an indifferent cross so many times. I hope they spend this week crossing> Fletcher can get us a goal from nothing. Give him some service and he will keep us up. You now need to step up to the plate and give us your very best> Players, you will get our support BUT the crowd will turn on you if you under-perform. Time to show us your character boys.

Curbishley has got the job! Happy days, this man will get us organised and is tactically astute.
Thank god its not Bruce, they couldnt satnd him at sunderland, he wasted millions and the football was awful to watch, we`ve justed sacked a manager like that.
Welcome Alan.

Can someone please tell Tim that Mick McCarthy is already married !!

Great news about Curbishley.

So its Saturday 18th,still more candidates to interview, doesnt this tell you something!!!!!!
1st Batch of potential managers, might need MONEY,to spend on PROPER PLAYERS,whether we stay up or drop.
So we will end up with LEE CLARK (WASTE OF SPACE)or a Blue Square League Manager
MOXEY has it all planned
He know most WWFC FANS are gullible and will be happy with any new manager!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT TO THE REAL FANS THAT AINT GOOD ENOUGH
THIS IS THE TIME FOR CHANGE!!!!!!!!
We know we will never be as good as we were in the 50/60,s
But our best FOOTBALL in recent years was played with Dave Jones in charge and the likes of Rae/Cameron/Lescott/Irwin/Murray in our team. What a delight to watch those games.
Under M.M ,TOTAL DISASTER,NO IDEAS,NO FORMATION= 5YEARS OF boring rubbish football.
GET REAL MOXEY.PROPER WOLVES FANS WANT REAL FOOTBALL ,NOT SHALL WE TRY 5 2 3 NOW MICK or 1 5 4 MICK ooops hold on Mick my CLIPBOARD HAS FROZEN
COME ON MOXEY GIVE ALL THE REAL FANS SOME GOOD NEWS ,NOT !!!OH THIS APPOINTMENT SHOULD KEEP THE COFFERS FILLED.

Brereton wolf get over it, whoppee do dah, MM made some substitutions in one match that actually worked, as opposed to the other 50 or 60 that didnt. Go your happy clapping waY and follow MM to his next disaster. As many have said on here MM nice bloke but couldnt manage a team in premier to save his life – you give me the evidence otherwise.

how did that south bank song go?, where the hell are you from? we’re from wulverhampton, buy a corner shop now, sell the cheaper lager, tennants super ,79p a can. my god those were the days.
i know the majority of wolves fans have a mistrust of anybody who wants to back the club, but who is’nt english, following the disgracefull bhatti brothers.
but i am a wolverhampton lad , bought up in low hill/park village, now residing in wednesfield.
and if i won the lottery, i would buy out morgan, reduce ticket prices to 15 pounds a match. bring back the liquidator. bring back terraces to the north and south bank. leave the sb/bw stands seated.
get sean driscoll as manager. and only go after players who would die for the shirt, not last payday mercenaries.
get rid of. ward, henry, milijas, stearman, roger jhonson.eggert, jhonson, doyle, ebanks blake, berra, vokes, keogh, foley, elekobi, guediora, edwards, thats 15 players who might bring in about 15 million and use the money to get.
frimpong permanently for next season, buy a proper left back/right back/centre half/
and use some of my lottery winnings to buy wellbeck and play him up front with fletcher with jarvis and kightly supplying the ammo.
in midfield i would have frimpong and o’hara.
in defence i would have new lb,new rb,new ch and bassong.
and give hennesy another chance. i will get slated for this, but hey its just my opinion. utw.

oops forgot to say,get rid of, o,connor, moxey, that too loud match day announcer, and bring back the strip from 1979.
and persuade,mr mittal, the owner of the biggest steel company in europe to get his money out of qpr and put it in to wwfc, and reduce the prices in the stadium food and beer outlets.
and have proper strip numbers 1-16, not the stupid 34/42/27 etc.
and give away fans one of the corners and never give the the south bank as moxey did once.
utw.

trouble with WOLVES no ambition to acheive from the top to the players just a happy boys club sod the fans no real noted players brought as usual and this season has been as bad as could be again in the bottom 3 . Steve Bruce we might as well kept Mick . and apparently no money in the summer . nice stand whos going to fill it

Lets have Dave Jones back they stabbed him in the back once but still happy to throw his cap in the ring

184 give us a chance-how much do you think you win on the lottery now? it’s only about 4 million, you might buy one player with that! agree about the liquidator though. still the best.

After that lot most certainly the Sven men. Real motivation and vitality with experience that we need at the Molineaux. A hidden class act, and a great track record. A toast too Mr Sven
Goran Eriksson.
