Steve Bruce is next in for Wolves job talks

Steve Bruce will get his chance to try to derail the Alan Curbishley bandwagon rolling towards Molineux this weekend.

The former Birmingham City boss, who came within a whisker of taking over at Molineux when the club opted for Dave Jones 11 years ago, will now get the chance to make his pitch for the post in talks with new owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey.

This followed yesterday’s sessions with bookies favourite Alan Curbishley, who is understood to have made a favourable impression at an interview in London yesterday.

Moxey was giving nothing away about the specifics of the club’s hunt for Mick McCarthy’s successor other than confirming more interviews were planned with the list of available candidates – although the club remained on course for an appointment in time for next week’s Newcastle clash.

“Things are progressing,” he said. “We are continuing to work to the timetable we indicated at the outset of this process and remain optimistic we will be able to fulfil those requirements.

“Our intention has always been to have a new manager installed in time to take charge of the team for the Newcastle match and that remains the case.

“But I stress – we want the right candidate, not the quick candidate.”

Bruce and Neil Warnock, both fired by Premier League clubs this season, are believed to be next in the process,  although Warnock is also featuring strongly in the vacancies currently up for grabs in his native Yorkshire, at Huddersfield and Leeds.

But he is seen as a potentially toxic figure for Wolves to present to supporters. Bruce, whose best managerial moments have come at Birmingham and Wigan, is a slightly more fan-friendly candidate.

His old St Andrew’s midfielder Robbie Savage was quick to back his former boss.

“Curbishley has been away from the PL and though he is a good tactician he doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who could put fire into the bellies of a demoralised team,” says Savage.

“Warnock could do that but his credentials at PL level have to be questioned. I’d go for Steve Bruce my old Birmingham boss.”

No to either of these dinosaurs. Why employ someone who got sacked for failing at many clubs. I f we employ Warnock or Bruce then we may have well kept Mick. Moxey and Morgan the fans do not want either of these, we want someone who’s team will play football and not ” miss the midfield, hoofball.

There are three managers,if that`s the right word, that we do not want at Wolves either short term or long term in my opinion. They are:Steve Bruce, Niel Warnock and Paul Ince.We need a proven man in charge such as Benitez even Houghton, why not Pardew? Seriously,Curbishley seems to fit the bill although he`s been out of the game for a little while.I bet he`s not stopped watching foorball in that time.PS.bIG Sam might be interested.

Personally I think it is good that Curbishley has been away for a while, it didn’t do Martin O Neil harm.

What I don’t understand is the stance of Bull and Hibbit to McCarthy’s sacking.

Hard decision have to be taken in business to save any company when things are not working out.

The reality was McCarthy’s performance was not good enough.

His win ratio 19.6% in the PL.
1 Win in 13 Matches, Conceded 49 Goals in 25 Matches, 28 at the Mol, spent £7 on Johnson.
This was supposed to lead to a better defence.

Dismal Performances, ending with the worst performance for many years against WBA which could have been double had it not been for Hennessey.

Yes it’s a gamble now, is there enough time
one thing for sure, if we had carried on as we have upto & inc WBA we would have been relegated.

Players played their part in his downfall, but dismal performances meant Morgan had to bring about a change now, anyone who looks at body language would know McCarthy lost it weeks ago.

In my opinion, Steve Bruce is the outstanding candidate.

People go on about Curbishley keeping WHU up that one season……….

Tevez, Green, Mascherano, Carlton Cole, Bowyer, Benayoun, Dean Ashton, Boa Morte, James Collins, Gabbidon, Upson, Reo Coker, Zamora, etherington, anton ferdinand, panstil………

Let’s face it, not a bad set of players to work with, alot better than any potential wolves manager will have.

Errr Houghton ruled himself out with Benitez and Pardew happy in his role where he is.

Curbishley is the outstanding candidate. Keeping West Ham up could have been easier because of the strength of their team, however he still instilled belief and confidence into the players that had been struggling. Something we need.

We appoint Bruce or Warnock and there goes my renewal.

Hobsons choice i believe is the right phrase in the current circumstances. I’d prefer Warnock to Bruce any day, but wouldn’t want either of them. That leaves Curbs…apparently a great tactician but not much good at putting fire in the bellies of players in a relegation fight…13 games to go and to have a chance we need 6 wins….couple of draws. Lets face it…our options were always going to be limited sacking Mick at this stage in the season. Out of the three mentioned so far, I’d take Curbishley if only based on the amazing job he did at Charlton. If we go with Bruce or Warnock then we may have well have stuck with Mick as I would class both of these managers in the same league. I would like to see Paul Ince as an assistant manager though (unlikely as he’s no doubt holding out for a propor managers role but I think he would be tremendous).

I’m not usually one for conspiracy theories, but I can’t help feeling that the appointment of Curbishley is to all intents and purposes a done deal.

It seems that the 3M’s were far less working in unison than what were previously led to believe. It now appears that the dressing room incident was the culmination of some kind of disparity between Morgan and McCarthy.

The owner has expressed his admiration and preference for Curbishley. In turn Curbishley was quick off the mark to signal his interest in Wolves job. Add to that the link via Curbishley’s brother, it looks to me like the club are simply going through the motions.

I would be surprised if anybody other than Alan Curbishley is named as the new Wolves manager early next week.

No to Bruce and Warnock, it’s pitiful that they are even being considered! Both have been sacked in the last couple of months because of relegation fears at their former clubs!.! Stay the course Morgan and land us a manager with real pedigree, a respected authority within the game…. Alan Curbishley is that man. He will put the pride back in this great club from the moment he is appointed ! It will be a real statement of intent… It will show the rest of the premier league wolves mean business! Not only will it immediately lift all at the club but he is the only candidate with the Tatical nouse to steer us away from trouble. The fact he has been away from the game I see as a bonus rather than a detrement, he will be fresh, full of energy and I just know he pull of the great escape ! However unlikely that seems now.

Alan “I walk away when things get tough” curbishley will be no good for this club at all, he had marginal success at charlton 10 years ago!! Things have changed a lot since then. He’s been out of the game for 3 and listening to his tv punditry he still doesn’t have a clue what’s going on. He was the beginning of the end for west ham and he will be the same for us, he’ll get us relegated but walk away happy with the large pay he has received for 3months work, Jarvis, kites, o’hara, feltcher, Johnson, Doyle, hammill, milijas, ward and foley will all leave to play in the PL and then we will be looking to players like vokes to get us up!

Let’s at least go for a successful manager that’s young Jez says that he wants experience of the PL for our next man well as far as I know Bredan Rodgers had none till this season and that served Swansea just fine! Darren Ferguson, Gus Poyet and Sean O’driscoll (who is a local man that’s had lower league success and never been relegated, he transformed Doncaster and I’m sure he would jump at the chance of managing wolves as he is a wolves fan and currently available other than coaching at notts forest) should be the three names on the list

Seriously, Curbishley should be the one. Tactics, knowledge and hunger for the game must count. I agree with the majority above, no to Warnock or Bruce. Curbishley plus a new backroom team, now there’s a great long term prospect. I still think that all this smacks of poor management from the very top. To sack Mick this week was senseless, if he deserved to go (which most believe he did) then he should have gone before the January transfer window to allow someone to come in and stamp their own authority on the team and to have at least a limited say in the personnel available and a fair chance to ensure premier league survival.
Given our predicament now, who is likely going to apply? Managers who themselves are out of work because they have either been sacked for not performing well enough at other clubs (QPR, Sunderland) or who have been overlooked by other clubs in recent months, despite being available!
We are going to end up with someone who a week ago would not have been a thought in anyone’s mind as the next Wolves manager!
If the management team were worth their salt they would have been ruthless and head-hunted a young, eager, hungry manager to come in on Mick’s departure, cherry-picked in advance and chosen because he would be a long-term replacement who would shape the team over the next 3 to 5 years. Instead we are going to get someone who has been hanging around in the doldrums and can’t believe his luck that Wolves have come looking in a blind panic!
Its a terrible depressing time to be a Wolves fan!

NO To CURBS! – I think he left charlton because they wanted european football but wouldnt give him the funds to help him.

He left West ham because they was selling his best players without his consent.

I dont really blame him leaving on either occasion, as both clubs were clearly taking advantage of him. It would seem that the board will be stressing that whoever comes in will need to do it with tight financial constraints, so I think if he did end up here, he would have no excuses. Given the way the clubs being run, If he keeps us up, I dont think we will be in danger of getting rid of all our best players either, so i think he will be happy with that.

As for saying things have moved on since his time, your right, but personally, i feel he would still do a good job for us. I dont think its a coincidence that he was at Charlton and they were flying, and as soon as he left, they plummeted, and the same thing happened at West Ham. I think hes the kind of manager that can take average players and make them into a quality team, his replacements obviously were not though.

Compromise is the word of the day. Anybody who has done serious recruitment knows that there is no such thing as the perfect candidate.

Keyboard warriors can say GET HIM! GET HIM! but then they will be the first to say SACK HIM! SACK HIM!

Style is not going to get us out of the bottom three, organisation is. But then what about next season will organisation be enough. I do think Paul Lambert will continue to be a star manager but he has hand-picked his players at Norwich to play his style of football.

M and M have a tough job, and it’s Steve Morgan who will be under pressure. It’s his appointment, his man, his timetable and his cash (predominantly) Is there a spellchecking with this thing?

It’s all about timing. New Year’s eve at Bolton was the get of jail card for me. Having the courage to sack a manager after a draw away from home is a big ask. At least then the new manager would have had a partial transfer window to work with.

So we have to be a little patient and hope that individualy they appoint the right guy. But whoever they appoint, as a mass, we have to put down our weapons of mass destruction (keyboards especially) and unite behind the new manager.

In the meantime, watching Neil Warnock on the touchline is entertaining but NO please NO!

Whoever the next manager is we need to build our foundations from the bottom up strong justlike a house and work from the back forwards. This brings in to mind players like Johnson, berra etc are they strong enough and posses the real quality to form a solid defensive midfield, we need a midfield general to dictate and organise.

No 15 ‘comatose Curbishley’ here we go again… Give it a rest…

No 37 I really think you need to have a look at what was going off at West Ham back then.. That’s why he won his ‘constructive dismissal’ case!

Question.. Why should the likes of Messrs Rodgers, Lambert, Allardyce, Hughton want to take the job at Wolves.. Well, realistically at this stage in the proceedings, why should they? Especially if the job is being advertised as a 13 game rescue mission!

And how this job is being sold is what concerns me.. Because you’re going to take a number of candidates out of the equation.. And my candidate without doubt would be Curbishley.

Apart from the managers in work at present.. the other names mentioned have shown weakness at this level or simply carry too much baggage.

It wouldn’t surprise me that the obvious restrictions that will be in place at Wolves.. Curbishley may well rule himself out.

    I hope not.

Love the fact nobody wants Bruce even though apart from this (half) season (after Gyan and and Bent left for non footballing reasons) he finished in the top 10 with Sunderland, and did well with Wigan (with a similar quality of players to those that we currently have at Molineux).

Curbishley took 13 years to stabalise Charlton as a middle-ish class Prem team and then just about kept West Ham up with a team FULL of internationals, whilst refusing to play Mascherano…. Why do we want him?!

Lee Clark has obviously not been sacked for footballing reasons so probably applied to us – I call Bruce as gaffer with Clark as number 2.

And will people stop calling for Pardew? Why on earth would he leave Newcastle where he has a 5 year contract and the spending power of Sports Direct behind him – like Morgan would fork out for Cisse, Ba, Ben Arfa etc….

Also, why are people who have previously posted hundereds of times ‘SACK MICK’ now barraging the board for interviewing REALISTIC candidates. News flash guys – WE ARE NOT MAN U OR CHELSEA, we cannot attract the kind of manager you seem to think we can!

Rant over – sorry to all those that have posted sensibly!!

Hate to say it but if they are looking for a short term fix manager, it will be Bruce.
Curbs would be my long term choice but it may take more tha the 13 games left for him to turn it round.
But whoever it is MUST keep us in this league.

Just pass and move. It's not so hard

Steve Bruce as a manager is, in my humble opinion, Mick McCarthy lite but with a bigger budget.

Like Mick he’s down to Earth, personable and a motivator but limited as a tactician and not known for planning, forward thinking and long term improvement. Wrong man, wrong time for us now.

If I was chairman of a club and had the choice of the two of them I’d go for Mick every time.

Agree with 1 & 26. We dont want losers like Bruce & Warnock. I’m amazed the club are even considering those two. Warnock has no track record whatsoever at Premier level. What top club would even consider employing him? As for Bruce he’s had enough chances. Sacked at Huddersfield, contract not renewed at Blues and despite massive spending at Sunderland they were heading for relegation so thats 3 sackings. Then you look at his walk outs at Palace, Sheff Utd & Wigan. I’m amazed Morgan even wants to waste time interviewing this guy. His track record doesn’t suggest he’d build the club any lasting success because he’d have done it somewhere by now. Curbishley is far and away the outstanding available candidate. But Morgan has to take the blame for this mess by not listening to the fans and pulling the trigger sooner. O’Neill was right there under his nose for a long time. But as Chris Hoggard says and i said months ago… They don’t want a charismatic manager who’s in their ear all the time demanding the best & giving them hell. They want an easy life & ‘yes men’ like McCarthy & Connor who’ll not rock the boat too much because they’re limited tactically and want to remain Premier league coaches as long as possible. I said McCarthy should have gone after Blackpool away last season or at the very least after QPR or Swansea at home this season. I fear Morgan’s left it too late?

Still amazed by some of the names mentioned on this board…why would any manager want to gamble on being in the Championship next season. West Ham are going up, Norwich & Swansea are staying up. People need to get real – we will not be able to poach a manager from another club when our own fate is so uncertain.

As for English Exiles remark about how all of Moxeys managers get sacked – firstly he’s only appointed three (Dave Jones, Glenn Hoddle and Mick) and of those one resigned…how else would the other two have left?

On another note don’t forget that Brian Little got sacked by Gainsborough Trinity in August so he’s available or maybe we can poach Graham Turner or even offer Sammy Chung a go?

It’s all getting a little embarrassing now and shows poor leadership at the club. Love or loath Mick, the fact is that if they had any intention of sacking him it should have happened at least a month ago.

Then, more managers were available, transfer window was still open and there were more games left to secure safety.

It is clear that SM/JM did not want to spend any more in January and worse still, did not want to attract interest from managers with greater expectations (Hughes or O’niell).

I agree with appointing for 13 games now, but do not consider any of the candidates better capable than Mick.

What a sorry state we are in……….

    You bunch of bells

I’ve seen at least two of you mugs write “Why not Pardew?” on here… Just thought I’d explain for you.

You’re not very good. Simple. You will get a second-rate cast-off manager, like Mrs Doubtfire Bruce and get relegated.

Hope that clears things up for you.

But before i go back to work how about this for a wild card. Last year i was fortunate enough to meet Eric Harrison the legendary youth team coach at Manchester Utd & Sir Alex’s trusted right hand backroom man for many years. He talked about the attitude of certain players & what drives them to the very top. He went on to talk of the superb natural talent of Beckham, Scholes, Butt, Giggs and Lee Sharpe when they were just breaking through. Then he mentioned the Nevilles…Gary in particular. How Gary had the least amount of natural talent compared to the rest. But what he did have was a desire to achieve beyond those guys. He would stay behind every day and practice. A fierce determination the like old Eric had never seen in a young kid before. His passion and burning desire to reach the top, the very top, was almost frightening. Here was a natural born winner said Eric. Well we know what Gary Neville went on to win don’t we. It just got me thinking thats all… What if Neville could transfer that fierce will to win attitude to the training ground…Compton maybe. With an experienced No.2 alongside him. Maybe..just maybe.

Steve Bruce was not able to motivate a so called ‘BETTER’ sqaud of players at Sunderland and look what Martin O’Neill has done with them so no thank you.
Whatever happens We need to be looking to get one of the up and coming managers within the next three years maybe as a coach so there will then be a natural progression in future.
As from next saturday I will again be stating the facts again. so you can compare the record of the NEW manager to the OLD one.

As for Keegan, his favourite song is “Just Walk Away Renee”
70 B’end. So what else is Pardew but a cast off ? …and from how many Club’s?
Good luck at The Direct Sports Stadium. They took down St James Park sineage yesterday. Good Job. The club’s been an embarrassment to the North East for long enough

Alan Curbishley please, give him the job now, bruce is no better if not worse than Mick, and if Neil Warnock gets the Job, I will not attend a wolves match while he was gaffer

For the record, I would like to thank Mick for what he has done for my club, I do agree it was the right time for him to go, but without him, we would not even be in the prem now, we would more than likely be a league one side and wish Mick all the very best for the future – in my time of watching wolves going back to 1987 / 1988 season, Mick is my second favourite manager, Graham Turner is my favourite, Dave Jones third

The buzz about Curbs is that he has a great track record. Does he? He has managed 2 clubs (Charlton and West Ham) and has a win ratio less than 40%. He was interviewed for the England job on the back of that and didnt get it.
Not saying he wouldnt do a great job, but like many of the posts i dont see Curbs, Bruce or Warnock being any better than Mick.
My choice would be Benitez if we could get him or prize Big Sam out of the East End.
Failing that give Lee Clark a shot.

Like most people on here I can’t believe their even concidering Bruce or Warnock.

If bruce gets the job it will show that the board don’t care what the fans think and they will pay with a massive drop in season ticket sales. Bruce will be to WWFC what Mcliesh is to Villa. The fans will target JM next because this will be a decicion based on finance and not football.

Personally IMO if AC dosn’t want the job I would let Jody take charge till the end of the season and then get an up and comming manager to get us back up. I know I am going to hold fire on the early bird before deciding whether to renew. May have to wait till the summer to see what happens.

I hope I’m wrong but Wolves seem to shoot themselves in the foot all the time. Lets hope this isn’t the case this time because I can see a lot of unrest comming which will play right into the hands of the happy clapping ‘we love mick’ lot.

It’s got to be AC, get on the phone now Morgan before it’s too late.

If Steve Morgan really cared about our club he would have moved heaven and earth to sign the likes of Cabaye,Ba and Gardner when offered the chance pre-season instead of Johnson. We’re never gonna be more than a YoYo club at best with this owner at the helm. Should of sacked Mick wks ago with a new manager already in the pipeline to recruit players in the January window. Clueless! Should of gone for Mark Hughes. Thanks to Mick tho for his time at the club. Who knows what league we could of been in without him.

Last I heard we were the most profitable club in the PL, only one other wasn’t in debt. Thank Jack for that but also M&M for maintaining our strong business foundation, at least we don’t have to keep looking over our shoulder as creditors loom in. This gives us something sustainable to build on and someone such as Curb offers a long term option which for me is better then short term hype which is all a Warnock or Sam A offer.
