Jez Moxey eyeing a short-term fix for Wolves

Wolves are ready to seek out a 13-game firefighter to prevent their Premier League plans going up in smoke.

The search for Mick McCarthy’s successor began in earnest today with a view to recruiting a man in time to prepare the relegation-threatened team for their next match at Newcastle in 11 days’ time.

And chief executive Jez Moxey admits that part of the Molineux board’s strategy will be to focus on a short-term “keep us up” candidate in the hope they can reach the summer still in the top flight.

Moxey acknowledged that identifying, interviewing and then recruiting the man to take on the long term “Molineux project” may not be possible in the time available.

“You may be right,” said Moxey when presented with the option of a short-term fix to answer Wolves’ immediate crisis.

“That’s definitely an option. It’s part of our thinking. If someone wants to come in and say ‘you know what I fancy this, I reckon I can keep you in the Premier League’ – then we create a short-term situation and they can demonstrate they are worthy of a long-term one.

“We’re not saying absolutely not to that.”

Wolves believe that, with a third of the season still to come and a glut of fixtures against their fellow strugglers, there is time still for the campaign to be retrieved.

Behind the hunt for a ‘Red Adair’ figure lies the need for McCarthy’s successor to accept the club’s operating code which Moxey warns will not include an open chequebook. But he also accepts time is pressing.

“We need to do some work really quickly, make a decision as soon as we can and then act decisively,” he said.

“If that person is in a job then we have to approach the club, get permission to speak him, if all goes well agree compensation and then get on with it. There has to be chemistry and you never really know until you get into it.”

Wolves are cool on an appointment from any overseas coaches. “Whoever he is, has to know who the heck our players are,” said Moxey – while admitting an experienced hand was also a priority. “This job is not a job for a novice,  that’s obvious,” he added.  “You keep an open mind but winning matches in the Premier League is the most difficult part.”

McCarthy was today linked with the Leeds job.

Let’s hope McCarthy gets a job at a club with a bit of money to spend so he can buy some the the rubbish (favourites) that he purchased at Wolves!

Only problem is who will match the 4 year contracts on Premier money he’s dished out to Berra, Ward, Henry et al?

Moxey, you have to pick the right man first time and not mess about with short term fixes.I personally would like to see Benitez but why not go for Houghton,he`s certainly proved he can do the job. This talk about not going for managers of other clubs is for wimps, other clubs do it why shouldn`t we? Is it money again? if you want to run a successful club I`m sorry but it costs, don`t try and run it as you and the Muppet have tried up to yet,CHEAP IS NOT ON.Also I am a bit worried when names such as Bruce,Keane,Warnock and Ince are mentioned for our club the answer here must be a resounding no,no,no,to all of these.I am a bit wary when Curbishley is mentioned but I think he is better than those already mentioned.

I’m sorry, but if we get Steve Bruce in then this season will have been an absolute b@lls up. The only candidate that could possibly save us is Alan Curbishley. If he isn’t appointed asap I can only presume Morgan is on the phones to his mate Benitez just to see if he fancies it.

We need a manager who is used to scrapping out an end of season battle, one who can keep things going in difficult times, one who can influence the players to play for him after adversity, one who has achieved success recently in keeping the club up. Oh yeah – we have just sacked him !! The whole club is now a joke !!

Biggest named manager Wolves are likely to get is Sven. It’s unlikely Benitez would want to risk relegation on his CV when the Madrid job is available in the summer. I hope you guys stay up as the banter between midland fans is top notch. This is just my opinion as an outsider but I think Bruce isn’t as bad as what everyone thinks.

As much as MM did his best, we have been saying for a long time that change was needed. Pity the board took so long. It is ironic that Jez is always going on about a results driven industry and then lingers on sacking McCarthy- makes no sense.

Thank goodness they have finally made the decision.

Short term deal would be the answer-probably Curbishly for me and then sort something out in the summer dependent on which div we are in.

This story contridicts itself anyway… Moxey says we will go for a short term fix but then says we will pay compensation for someone in a job! You wouldn’t do that for 13 games.

Im wondering about Walter Smith til the end of the season if hes going down that route!

Warnock or Bruce?? Hmmm my suspcions are Warnock would be more favourite for the job, and I would prefer him on a short term deal over Bruce by a mile.

We will have to wait and see and Im sure speculation will be massive in the next few days. I believe if Curbishley comes in, although a tough ask, Wolves will have a great chance of staying up.

Mick should have gone in January it was written in stone at the time that we would struggle big tim to win games.
Moxey had viewed our games from September after our bright start it started to go badly wrong,it was just not the results but the performances were of a side struggling.
Mick was on the decline from the season before,he had done what he could and reached the peaks of his power.
It is a hugh “SIN” for Moxey to have not recognisied the obvious!!!MOXEY as to go also his decision making is awful,Moxey is not able to read a situation until it “SLAPS” him in the face.
Mick was kept due to the unity of the players, players can be united on the pitch but it was obvious from R.Johnson’s appointment as captain was going to rock and test that unity.K.Henry should have remained club captain especially as mick came out said he is the 1st name on the sheet.
One thing with Karl is he bleeds WOLVES.
I wrote at the time that Mick would live to regret this decision.I also beleive R.Johnson was given assurances prior to him agreeing that he would be Captain.Another mistake as he was holding us to ransom a man who had declined to come to us on a prior occassion!!
Rule broken right their you never bring someone who as “REJECTED” you already.
Our defence as looked worse than any period in MICKS reign this season.
Point is MOXEY wake up and realise prevention is better than cure!!!!

Why on earth would this club want rejects like Bruce or Warnock, they’ve just both been sacked from clubs going in the same direction as us. Look what has happened at Sunderland… new manager, same players, incredible turnaround. QPR have bought to try and get themselves out of the mire, Morgan looks like he wants Curbishley, the poll of fans looks like they want Curbishley, make it happen NOW Moxey, this guy builds teams that play in the right way too. There are good players at our club, they just need to regain some confidence, play in their correct positions, leave out MM favourites and I am sure the results will come. Look at the other teams who came up Swansea and Norwich, both try to play the right way, keeping the ball, pass it to a man in the same coloured shirt, which always helps, and NON of this hoofball that we have resorted to again.

A short term fix sounds about right for Moxey – Connor as a coach – Our Goalkeeping Coach – Who? Tony Daley as Fitness coach It all smacks of short term – cheap – quick instant – Junk food – What we needed is Medium to long term stabillity – Job done Jez – What exactly are you doing to warrant your large salary and annual bonuses???

Moxey will go for the cheapest possible option. That’s why he urged Morgan to stick with Mick – ie until after both the summer and January transfer windows so they wouldn’t have to give a new manager any money. He’ll hope now we can scrape by, just survive and his bonus will be as big as ever!

You need to appoint for the long – term because it’ll unsettle the players if they stay up knowing that the manager will leave because he has achieved keeping the club up. Only one man in my eyes is perfect for the wolves job and that is Alan Curbishley. Farwell Mick you’ve been good at wolves but after the last day of last season it was only a matter of time if the results didn’t improve. Curbs for me is the best candidate, although I dont know how being out of management for so long will have affected him.

    I dont want Warnock.

Steve bruce in the short term could possibly keep us up, but I dont think he would be too succesful in the long term.

Paul Ince struggled with his last stint in the premier league, but hes a fighter and I have no doubt he will be back. I just feel we need a little more experience than he has to offer.

Can Benitez manage a club without money. I personally dont think so, and it would just be another situation like the avram grant one, where he looked a decent manager when he managing world class players, but is found wanting when managing on a budget.

I think we have the right players to keep us up as long as we have the right tactics, which i feel Mick struggled with particularly towards the end. Just looking at the match on sunday, Its clear that Mick sent out his team to counter WBA’s tactics rather than to benefit our own. 3 strikers on the pitch was a decent team selection, but the defensive style we played was never going to benefit his team selection.

Our passing and movement is poor, so hopefully whoever comes in will bring some decent coaches with them to help improve such simple fundamentals in which we were clearly lacking.

The fact that the players we were linked with Gardnener Demba ba etc and the fact that Moxey says it will not be an open cheque book clearly states the mind set at Molinuex! When, and only when that man leaves and we have a change of mentality in the board room (a bunch of crash test dummies)will we progress as we should have done last season.
When a new manager comes in he brings with him HIS experience, knowledge and tactics which HAVE to be better and above what the last one did. If they are after another ‘YES’ man who will be told by Moxey to do it on the cheap then get Mcarthy back.

However, he did have his favourites so it may be one or two who have warmed the subs bench but can play a bit, may get a chance while others are shown the door.
I sincerely believe that Clipboard and a whole load of playing driftwood (all doing well out of the club) need rooting out. Then perhaps there may be a little more money available for better players.
Change is always difficult, it will never suit everyone, but it often does offer opportunities and hopefully some will see it that way and grasp any chances they are given. That includes the new manager whether stopgap or otherwise.

Wolves Mick & Old Wolf i have sympathy for MM and wish him all the best for the future and if he comes back i will be clapping in respect but face the facts. He has achieved all he can remember we stayed up last year thanks to Spurs and lost the most important game of the season. This year we have been awful and for all the complaints about budget he still struggled to buy players who could make a difference, 3 years on and the side who lost the weekend was more or less our championship winning side. That to me was his issue take Andrew Surman never got a run in the team now playing week in week out for a side who have spent a fraction of what money he had. Tactically he should have brought in an experienced coach to look at changing things which could have helped.
This should have happened before xmas i agree and is now panic but i still think the change might motivate a very dejected looking team.

Curbishley is the only one I can see us getting who I would want. If we get Bruce I will NOT renew my season ticket next year.

I still blame Morgan for all this and his failure to invest more that what we paid for Johnson in the summer. Mick new our problems you can see thay by his loan signings. Bassong has pace which we lack in defence & Frimpong had a cutting pass to create a chance which we also lacked. Sensible choice to get someone in short term (bit like loaning a player really). 13 Games should be enough to see whether or not the new guy has got what it takes. If not then at least it won’t be an expensive mistake, because sacking him would cost lots of money.
In fact if its only going to be short term the board could do a lot worse by appointing somebody other than Craddock, Jody I’m sure commands the respect of the players, and knows his way around the club. As for all the players comments about them being gutted, well they are the ones to blame for MM’s sacking, nobody else. MM trusted them and they let him down (especially those who played Sunday) badly, so much so that he lost his job. The players have been underperforming for the last 20 odd games they must have know it, despite all their “we’ll be alright assurances” in the E & S. A large number of players have simply not performed consistently at the level to which they are capable. We can all have fun naming these players but it is these guys who got Mick the sack and put us where we are. I hope we here an apology from the players for the WBA capitulation and I hope the players take responsibility for hauling us out of this mess. Who can we name as a stand out performer this year, someone who has done better than last season? – only Hennessey and Fletcher come to mind. Mick took the flak for their poor performances. Time now for the players to show some guts, guile, determination and refusal to lose. In the short term the team needs some pruning. We will now find out what our team is made of. This is a huge gamble to press the panic button now. Who knows what impact a new Manager will hace on a team full of McCarthy-bought players. We appear to have few leaders in the side. Let’s cut this emotional claptrap.

Mick deserved to go. We were thrashed by Albion and thrashed by Liverpool. We haven’t won enough games under him, the defence is a shambles, the midfield is a shambles, there’s no youth coming through at all , the list goes on..

Yes, I’m grateful he got us up, thanks Mick, but that’s where it ends. He’s a football manager,a very well paid manager, and a championship level one, that’s the truth of the matter.

Now, can we save our season? I seriously doubt it as the squad that the next manager inherits is largely very poor. And we can all thank Mick for that.

Berra, Edwards, Ward, Henry, Foley, Blake all regulars and all championship players.

I would recall Doherty and plonk him at right back, get Zubar alongside Bassong, go and hunt around the youth set up for a left back and at least then we might start to look as if we have a defence as under Mick we never had one.

Hammil has to come back on the right wing and let’s put one of the youngsters up front with Fletch with Doyle playing attaching midfield.

At least now, we can try something different ( well , as soon as clipboard goes!).

Thanks for the promotion Mick but sorry, my memories are soured by the last two years of largely rubbish football and some truely naive and dreadful tactics.

Seems Moxey is regretting ignoring the fans after all this time and should have done what they wanted and got someone else in whilst managers like O’Neil were available and before the transfer window closed.

It’s all too little to late. I think survival lies in the players now and not who we bring in. Problem is the players we need to help us survive are the ones likely to go if we go down anyway so they might not be up for it.

Our premiership signings will go. Fletch, Doyle, Hunt, Johnson, Zubar and Mijias. Then were going to struggle to keep Jarvis and Hennessey and without Mick his old favourites of Ward, Henry and Kightly wont want to stay either.

I dispair at the thought of who we are actualy gonna hire.

Rafa the gaffa would only work under a ‘blank chequebook’ chairman.

Don’t go with unproven managers like ince – all they will prove is how inexperienced they are, at the cost of our prem leauge status.

Curbishley seems the pick of the bunch, but with 4 years out of the game, is still a risk.

Although I have previously made my views on MM as a manager very clear he was a thoroughly decent man and I wish him well.
One disturbing issue is that he is said to have wanted Demba Ba, Cabaye and Craig Gardener but wages (not fees) were the stumbling block. Where would we be today with that trio?
“Pay peanuts, get monkeys” isn’t just a glib cliche and although many think all players are overpaid it’s a free market. If Wolves board are determined to stick to their “sensible pay structure” then they will never attract enough quality to be a truly successful club at Premiership level.
They should be honest, admit that and console themselves with their prudence whilst staring at the empty white elephant new stand instead of blaming Pub TV.

It will all be done on the cheap. As Moxey says the new manager will have to keep to the clubs operating code. That means let’s order some more peanuts to feed the monkeys, cuz that’s all we can afford. As for short term manager, that is totally counter productive. We are probably going down to the fizzy pop league so get a manager in who can look at the playing staff, so he can either get rid or get in New players.

Please, not Curbishley! Another mediocre manger who will make mediocre signings and toe the line with the board because he is grateful to be back in a job. If he is so good and so driven why has he not been in a job for 4 yrs, why has no other premiership club taken him on? We need drive and motivation in the next manager to get the team up for the challenge of survival, tho it’s seems Morgans Wolves are more about cost effectiveness rather than quality, doing things on the cheap will ultimately cost more in the long term! That’s why we’re are in the situation in the first place….

Most of the players had a big affection for mick and are no doubt very low at this moment in time and some dull, lackluster personailty like Curbs just isnt going to work in my opinion…

I belive Holloway would be chomping at the bit for an opportunity to manage a club like ours ( no disrespect to Blackpool but we are a bigger club ) and have another crack at the prem which he deserves. Blackpool played some cracking football at times last season and hes got them going again with little funding and losing his better players this season. If we was to go down aswell he already has a promotion on his cv and i think hes a good long term option to wolves to build on. Fair enough he can be abit wacky at times but he speaks the truth with always alot of sense to go with it. Hes also big buddies with Wilkins so something could happen there possibly…

But this is wolves and nothing goes to plan so no doubt the scouse owner has some managerial dreamteam of John Barnes and Sammy Lee at the ready….

50 – Your first two paragraphs pretty much reflect my own feelings, mate. There really is too much “emotional claptrap” clouding the issue. Mick lived on the club’s and fans’ gratitude for promotion for far too long. That’s why we’ve gone backwards. Morgan’s even more to blame than Mick for allowing this nonsense to persist for so long. However, I wish Mick well in his next job and thank him for his efforts.

Personally, I’m not convinced we’ll survive no matter who we bring in. It’s asking a lot from any boss. Ideally, MM would’ve seen the season out but Sunday’s result made it impossible.

We’ll better placed to make a rational decision once the season’s over and we know what’s what. A temporary fix is maybe the best option. However, when you see exciting, up-and-coming young bosses like Clark, Hughton, Rogers and Lambert, you can’t help but admire their work and fancy a bit of it yourself. That’s the kind of boss to take us forward. Good luck in your selection process, Moxey. Just keep the likes of Warnock and that joker McLaren away from Molineux, please.

As for our players, well, save your crocodile tears, boys. You had many chances to prove yourself and help save Mick’s skin. Sure, Mick had his faults, but having utter faith in you lot wasn’t one of them. Unfortunately, it was misplaced faith. Next time out, just quit the talkin’ and do the walkin’.

Amazed nobody has mentioned Gianfranco Zola yet. Kept West Ham up against the odds a couple of years ago, replaced with Herman Munster and before you know it they are a Championship side.

He’s out of work, knows English football, has a different approach to the game from McCarthy and is arguably even more popular and personable than Mick.

I agree with some others that Bruce is not as bad as many make out. My personal preference would be Alan Curbishley, then Zola then perhaps Adkins or Clark. You can keep Colin, never kept a side up, does nothing but walk the FA tightrope with his comments (would snap your hand off for Keith Curle as a coach though). Sven will suck the club dry before staggering drunkenly out the doors at the end of the season; Benitez hasn’t got the bottle for a relegation fight; Holloway got Blackpool relegated and couldn’t do anything with the players we have, IMHO.

You both make very good points, I said at the start of this season we should draw a line under last season and give him full support this season, for the first few games I thought we had cracked it, we played some excellent football, then it all went wrong and he reverted to last seasons failed tactics which nearly took us down.

So I am afraid this has been comimg for a long time.

Football is a business and players / managers get paid and keep jobs for results, which in our case have been sadly lacking.

The worst thing he did in my opinion was offering 4 year contracts to his favourites, for poor performances, however these were also signed off by the 2M’s who are supposed to be shrewd business people.

    Curbishley is the only candidate.

Charlton were trying to establish themselves as a mid table club as well as build a new ground, sounds familiar!?

Well Curbishley worked wonders for Charlton at this level, finding players like Bent, Euell, Powell and Matty Holland etc.

Charlton never recovered after he left.

In addition, considering our training facilities and youth development, we have not seen one youngster come through and make a footprint on the Wolves 1st team in over 5 years. This is Curbishleys strong point, e
he was great at bleeding in the youth development at Charlton and could do the same for us.

My third reason is he joined West Ham in a similar position to ours and kept them up!

Its a no brainer, get Curbishley and lets re-build with him.

It would also be nice to get someone like Ray Wilkins in to assist him.

For me that would be progress.

    50 & 68 Good posts,
a lot of my thoughts in there too. No sentiments required for the sacking, those are exclusively reserved for the club we love!

I fancy Curbishley could do the end of season job and he just might keep us up too. And f he couldn’t he’d still be my choice to get us back up and quick too. Nobody else come near his abilities on a shoe string budget. Just because he’s been out of a job doesn’t mean he isn’t still the talent he was when he had one. What do some of you think, that he’s been reading novels or sun bathing his time away?
He’d be certain to cut a lot of the dead wood adrift too. Too bad for Morgan that he won’t get much of a return on the fees paid and contracts absurdly awarded to below par signings. As a business man, that’ll sting his pocket (hopefully).

73 – Agreed. Those big contacts always amazed me, too, TFW. A reward for mediocrity indeed. As you said, you can’t help but question the business sense of Mick’s (ex) superiors. If the yardstick of ‘success’ is in the value of our current players, how many of our squad would be cherry picked by PL clubs, if we go down? Three?

Our plight is a combination of all 3M’s making huge clangers at crucial times. True, Mick is inadequate at this level, but Moxey is a renowned penny-pincher (his oft-used word is “prudence”, of course). Add to the mix Morgan’s warped priorities…then chuck in a liberal sprinkling of cheapo buys “for the future” (Eggert Jonsson being the latest)…oh, and don’t forget an Assistant Manager who arrived at the Wolves before Elvis even cut his first disc. Hell, who’s really surprised at the chaos we’re in? It aint all down to McCarthy, as I said. Aint that right, Steve?

Speaking as an outsider, are Wolves players worse than those at Norwich and Swansea? I dont think so. They seem to lack motivation for one thing. Rancor is right though about Steve Bruce. Bruce has admitted that tactics are not his forte, and his tenure at clubs follow a predictable pattern; an improvement in results at first, followed by more patchy performances, followed by losing football punctuated by the odd good result. The truth is that he always eventually gets the bullet. The smart choice would be Alan Curbishley.

Looking at Alan Curbishley objectively, three maybe four years out of managament is a long time. If he has ambition, has he applied for numerous jobs and got “knocked back” ? Or, if he lacks ambition, preferring to pick up easy money as a T.V. pundit during his “wilderness years”, do we want that type of laid back character at the Molineux ? For me he has always had a kind of snooty, disdainful air about him that suggests that he couldnt be paid enough to manage north of Watford.
Contrast him with Chris Hughton who took on the Newcastle job when it was tantamount to coaching the Christians versus the Lions, sacked unfairly after doing a great job , and then took on Blues after a firesale of their best players.
