Mick McCarthy expects Wolves to reap the benefits of an in-form Kevin Doyle in tomorrow’s Black Country derby.

Doyle set up the equaliser for Matt Jarvis and scored the winner in Saturday’s 2-1 win at QPR. The Ireland international looked back to his best after a below-par spell that cost him his place in the team.

But boss McCarthy believes the £6.5m striker, who was such a talisman in the last two seasons, is ready to fire Wolves again – starting against Albion tomorrow.

“If we’ve got an in-form Kevin Doyle back now, that will be great for the rest of the season,” said the boss. “He’s a classy player and that class is permanent. He lost his form a bit but he came back with a bang on Saturday and was excellent.

“It was brilliant to see Doyle score because playing well is one thing as a centre-forward, but scoring goals is what his job is and so that gave him the most pleasure.”

McCarthy has always maintained Doyle is one of his more low maintenance players and he insisted the former Reading attacker has kept his head down during his struggles for form and goals.

“He’s been as he always is – exemplary in his behaviour, training and the way he carries on,” said the Molineux manager.
