Bassong backs Wolves quality

Sebastien Bassong today vowed there are “no doubts” Wolves have all the right ingredients to stay up as he prepared to tuck into his first Black Country derby.

The on-loan Tottenham defender is aiming to build on his impressive first game in Wolves’ colours in Saturday’s 2-1 win at QPR as Mick McCarthy’s side take on Albion this Sunday.

Bassong knows Jamie O’Hara from Spurs and George Elokobi from the Cameroon squad. And the 25-year-old believes the environment at Wolves is perfect to continue their turnaround after he helped them earn their first win in 10 Premier League games last weekend.

“The squad have been fine,” said Bassong. “There’s a great atmosphere in the camp, a great quality of players, so I’ve found it really good.

“Of course, I believe Wolves can stay up. And I’m sure we will.

“That’s the target we’ve all got to have. It will be tough but I think we can do it. I know what I’m coming into. And I have no doubts about it.”

Bassong saluted the spirit he has discovered at Molineux and believes the challenge of trying to keep Wolves up is as exciting as competing for the Champions League with Spurs.

“You have to keep it going, keep smiling and keep working,” he said. “That’s what they do here, and that’s great.

“Whether you’re battling for the Champions League, or battling in a relegation fight, it’s totally different but really exciting as well.

“You want to do something really good for the club and the fans by staying in the Premier League.

“That’s another motivation but something I’m enjoying already.”

Bassong helped keep a clean sheet against Albion in his last Premier League game for Spurs in a 1-0 win on January 3.

And today he told the Baggies he is only going to get better.

“I’m match fit and I think with more games I’ll be fitter and fitter,” he said.

“I care about my old team but for now, my head is 100 per cent for Wolves.

“For now I’m focusing on fighting relegation.

“If I can be a plus to the defence and help them concede less goals, it will be an achievement.

“But the most important thing is to win games.”

Certainly made a promising start last Saturday. Maybe we have found the centre back who can build a good partnership with Johnson in a similar way that Scott Dann did.

If so, and we avoid relegation, perhaps we could sign him permanently in the summer.

A loss to the Baggies would be devastating so the lineup has to be set to ensure three points. It will speak volumes for the coaching regime if we start defensive and try to grind out a result playing neanderthal football.

There is no way Mick will start 4-4-2 let alone 4-3-3, he will start 4,5,1 for sure.

The reason why is because Albion will line up 4,5,1 and Mick will go man for man because he is too scared to lose. If you ask me, Mick would take a draw Sunday.

I guarantee he won’t risk O’Hara & Edwards or O’Hara & Miljas as a two in the centre of midfield, because they ain’t strong enough defending. Edwards was appauling tracking back on Saturday and Miljas has never been able to do it!

Im not saying this is my line up, but the team will read something like this:

With the amount of games left, the derby isnt really a must win, but with the way our season has gone thus far, I think its essential never the less. I just get the feeling Mick will be happy with a draw for some reason.

We have proven how good a team we are with the most points picked up from going behind, but thats the main problem right there, it would seem our players only really get going when their backs are against the wall, I think its Micks responsibility to figure out how to get this young group of players firing on all cylinders from the get go.

Wolves who have been dreadful at home against WBA who have been better away, I think were going to have to play better than last saturday to get anything from this one. Only real positive is that I know we are capable of it.

What concerns me is our central midfield problems with Henry suspended, Frimpong injured and Guedioura (who should be starting on Sunday) on loan? I think Edwards and O’Hara together in the middle are far too lightweight and Albion couldn’t handle Guerdioura last season, he run the show. Albion will come and pack the midfield as well as playing 2 defensive midfielders in Scharner and Mulumbu but I feel it is only set pieces and the break where they could potentially catch us out. Defensively they are woeful and we HAVE to attack them.

Just shows how poor a sqau we have when Ward is in everyones team picked. MM has never signed anyone to take that position from his Idol and son, this is one of the reasone we are in the position we are.
Please wake up and look at the picture we have won 1 game not a Dozen, like i say Wolves always accept second best, and looks like they always will.

I’m really worried about you. Now Capello and his background boys have jumped ship I realise we could lose you to the National cause. How would Wolves cope without your tactical nous and your inspiring team selections on these boards ?
There’s us mere mortals worried about that missing link at the heart of midfield and then you in such masterly fashion, probably inspired by The Chuckle Brothers best moments, solve the problem in a single stroke.

Chris [51] Think you must be right about Guedioura tho he did come on belatedly, I think in the second Birmingham cup game, and did really well.

I’m very sorry he’s not still here..I think he still has the potential to be a good PL midfielder, like a certain Andrew Surman!!

These sudden loans of players at such an important time in our season suggests we are desperate to save money? Why didn’t we sell Elokobi in January and put the money to a better replacement. Are our finances worse than we think?

Streako’s got it right: Pump up the volume and give the Tescos a proper ‘Wolvo welcome’ for 90 mins. Molineux’s a very intimidating place when our mob are in full voice, so let ‘em have both barrels and then some.

This game aint about helping save McCarthy’s skin. It’s about saving our own skins by taking 3 pts off the Steptoes and sending ‘em packing back down the A41.

Seriously tho, this is a game we have to win, not just for the points but for pride too. It will be my first game since we beat Sunderland and i hope we all get behind the boys and create a fantastic atmosphere unlike the corrugated tin libary them lot are used to! I will personally be shouting myself hoarse…..and then i’ll have to sooth my throat with some Banks’s mild, wheres the best pint to be found these days?

So Wolves blogger Tim Spiers thinks McCarthy has found the route to salvation. Well I would argue that it smacked him in the face at about 3.25 last Saturday when Frimpong got injured, with Wolves already one down, clueless & heading for yet another dismal defeat.

Following Morgan’s rant he realised that it was taxi time if he didn’t do something positive. He got lucky when Stearman was injured and Foley the best RB at Wolves – & not a midfield player – reverted to his natural position allowing Doyle to enter the fray & play his part.

Yes it worked but clearly McCarthy was out of his comfort zone making such bold moves to plat three up front and come Sunday he will I am afraid revert back to type ie the cautious negative approach where he attempts to avoid defeat using out of date tactics that have been so unappealing on the eye for the last three years.

Sunday’s dilemma now lies in midfield where we are woefully short due to injuries, bizarre loan deals & the stupidity of Henry. Which is why – whether we like it or not – he will bring in Hunt & Jonsson to stiffen the midfield & compete with the oppositions 5 in midfield.

Foley has been our most consistent RB and must play there. We can only hope that O’Hara will be fit and give us the spark we so sorely miss when he is not playing. Doyle has earned a starting role and should be given the freedom to support Fletcher from midfield so he is not so isolated as we have seen in previous games.

McCarthy will settle for a point but of course won’t admit it. I think the team will look like this.

    Hennessey
    Foley Johnson Bassong Ward
    Jonsson
    Hunt Doyle O’Hara Jarvis
    Fletcher

We need to raise the roof to drive the Team on & can only hope we get a break or two which will bring us three points.
