Mick McCarthy hails his boss Steve Morgan

Mick McCarthy hails his boss Steve Morgan

Mick McCarthy today thanked Wolves owner Steve Morgan for his support and revealed he owes him a debt of gratitude.

The under-fire boss hailed the Molineux chairman after Wolves’ 2-1 comeback win at 10-man QPR on Saturday – which lifted them out of the Premier League drop zone.

Morgan gave the players an unprecedented dressing room blast after last Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool to indicate he was losing patience.

But the boss insisted Morgan’s support has never wavered and he continues to back him.  “We’ve won three games in 22 and I’m still here as the manager of Wolves,” said McCarthy. “Let me tell you that’s some level of support so let’s not forget that.

“When everyone is writing negative stuff about me and Steve he has been as supportive as anyone else. I owe him a debt of gratitude for that.”

The win eased the pressure on McCarthy ahead of Sunday’s Black Country derby visit of Albion.

Wolves moved above Bolton into 17th, just five points behind Albion after their 2-1 defeat to Swansea, but McCarthy preached caution.

“It’s nice to spoil someone’s party for a change,” said the boss, who is waiting to discover the extent of Emmanuel Frimpong’s knee injury after the midfielder limped out in the first half.

“We can drag West Brom in this week but they can move further away from us as well. I am positive but we’ve got three points against 10 men and are not going to start beating our chests about it.

“It’s a real tough game for us this week and a really important one because it’s against our neighbours.”

Matt Jarvis and Kevin Doyle sealed the win after Bobby Zamora had fired Rangers ahead – before Djibril Cisse was sent off for lashing out at Roger Johnson. It was substitute Doyle’s first goal since October and just his third of the season and McCarthy saluted his striker.

“I’ve said I heard a tennis player talking about how they can find a good shot when it’s needed,” he said.

“But sometimes they can fall beneath the standards they’ve got and it’s the same with footballers. A good footballer like Kevin Doyle has always got it in him.

“He’s had a tough time and it’s just not been happening for him but he was fabulous on Saturday.”

Lot’s of positives indeed. I really hope we can start to climb up the table now.

I sensed over the break we couldn’t spend Steve’s millions if we tried, due to the fact that many players do not have the stomach for a relegation battle and simply steer clear. We have got to climb to attract…

Huge Kudos to Steve for bringing in Bassong on loan.

The Cisse sending off might not just have turned the game against QPR it may have turned the season. We’ve missed O’Hara’s guile in midfield and we certainly needed Doyle back in form. Maybe Bassong can steady that vunerable defence of ours and maybe Jarvis can maintain the form he showed at Loftus Road. We shall see when the Tescos roll into town.
Rather strange to see all three strikers on the pitch at the same time, but, well done MM for your tactical switches. Don’t think we’ll see the same on Sunday, mind !

Bring Frimpong in for Edwards and keep second half line up for Sundys derby game. Still not convinced about Edwards although MM obviously likes him. I was stuck in the QPR end on Sat and Edwards gave a silly ball away on the edge of the box in the second half that Bassong managed to clear up. Bassong looks the part though, quick, reads the ball well and has the poise to get the ball down and play it, something we have missed since good old Dean Richards. He could well prove to be Mcarthys best signing, looked better than Onuaha for QPR.

Anyway, had a wander over ‘Morgan’s Folly’ at the weekend aka Compton Park.

Such a shame that the most unspoilt and picturesque area in Wolverhampton is being bulldozed by Morgan’s scouse mates in the next few weeks.

However, I’ve decided to use next years season ticket money as part of my deposit on a new house there.

This has the effect of killing two birds with one stone.

It’s only early Monday, yet the QPR v Wolves thread has already closed. Early closure of popular discussions on here seems to be the norm of late -but why? Ridiculous, Exp & Star.

We took three precious points off QPR (albeit as much by luck as judgement), but I’ll take that any day, thanks. Now show us some real appetite for the Steptoes game, boys. It’s a chance for sporting immortality.

I see Mick’s praised Steve for the support he’s received -which is in stark contrast to his annoyance at Morgan storming the dressing room, of course. Either Mick’s just started the process of brown-nosing his way around Morgan to retain his job, or the 2M’s have already kissed and made-up. Aaaw, bless.

I hate tiffs. If that’s what 3 points can do, maybe we should try winning more games more often? ;-)

Credit where it’s due to MM on Saturday. Yes, he got the starting line-up wrong but he made the right changes at the right times.
It would have been easy for him to put another midfielder on when Frimpong got injured but he chose to change our shape as it was clearly not working. He then put Doyle on at half-time when many of us in the ground were, perhaps, expecting Hunt.

For all he’s done in the last 5+ years, MM deserves time and support during difficult periods like we have been experiencing – both from the Board and the fans.

Good win but stil not good enough!

The facts are all there to see and the QPR game cemented the reason why Wolves will not move forward under McCarthy.

He started with 4-5-1 and put Stearman at right back, WHY?

Would Mic have bought SEB on and changed to 4-4-2 had Frimpong not been carried off?

Bought Doyle on for Stearman (see above) and when we got back in to the game at 1-2 should of reverted back to 4-5-1 and parked the bus as QPR came at us and nearly got level. I know its a boring tactic but hey at least its a tactic.

Steve Morgan should of stormed the dressing room in November after we lost 8 on the bounce. May be we mihgt not be in the pickle we’re in now had McCarthy been pressured to make some better team selections and employ better tactics. Its amazing what a good rollocking can do eh!

I’m always rather wary when the chairman of a football club comes out with a statement giving support to his manager. It’s bit like giving a glass of water to drowning man.

Nevertheless it does appear that the two have resolved their differences amicably and have drawn a line under the dressing room incident.

Just as important is the relationship between the manager and his players. If that breaks down then we really are in trouble. Fortunately from what I’ve seen and heard this is not the case at the club.

My own view about the turn of events at Loftus road is that I don’t think Hughes expected Doyle to be brought on as substitute for Stearman. That may have caught them a little off guard. A more logical substitution would have been Hunt and their half time team talk may have centred around that.

I would of played Hunt RM and left Foley at LB, other than that I think Mick picked the right team and formation.

Three salient reasons as to why we were under the cosh 1st half was because we are nervy and down on confidence due to the poor results we’ve been having, the other reason was we were away from home and it is always tough. You can not expect any team to go to Loftus Road now and dominate from the off, QPR are no mugs as Chelsea found out.

We have had our share of misfortune with referees and so Cisse getting sent off for the same reason as Henry against Villa, served
as a bit of a leveler for me. So whether we would of lost, as most disloyal fans on hear keep bashing on about, it is completely irrelivant, 3 points in the bag is the only fact that matters.

The positives where there for all to see. Johnson was twice the player next to Bassong, which for me tells us why his form has been so bad. Playing next to Berra has had a negative effect on his form. As it is in any Golf 4 ball or any team sport for that matter, the higher level of quality your teamate is,it always makes you play better, its an unconscious respect and concerntration instict in sportsmen. You naturally raise your game when you feel you are lining up along other quality players. Look at the level Lescott and Keane even Gibson have achieved since they moved onto higher placed clubs.

One negative for me though was once again Edwards. He looks out of his depth for me. A great worker and tryer, but not enough quality on and off the ball. Too many errors in the middle of the park and infront of the defence. Frimpong, Henry and O’Hara are my three central midfielders. I have to say the same for Miljas as well, not good enough im afraid.
    K

It will be a test of nerves against WBA. Key to Sunday will be taking this confidence from the QPR win into the game. If we are uptight, tense and nervy, Albion will smell our blood straight away and capitalise as the game goes on. Its imperrative we start with our chests out and take the game to them, as they too are under alot of pressure at the moment and they could bottle it if the going gets too tough.

Its our biggest game of the season this week, so lets get behind the team and manager and show everyone….

The win may be just what we need to turn it around. But we slipped back to bad form after Wigan and Sunderland win so don’t get carried away happy clappers. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realise that Wolves possess some excellent attack minded players who would easily grace most sides in the Premiership i.e. Fletcher, Doyle, Jarvis, O’Hara, Kitely, Hunt, Hammill etc. Therefore we have to play to our strength’s and play all out attacking football. Especially against the so called lesser teams. We ought to go for a 4-3-3 formation against the Baggies. If we sit back they’ll be all over us. So come on Mick. Let’s have a real go at them!

Let’s move on and try and take this bit of form into the next match. Who’s it against, now ? We are not in the bottom three, we haven’t got the toughest away run in and with a bit of luck Doyle, Kitely, Jarvis and O’Hara are coming back from injury and poor form at the right time.
I think Henry is also a key part. He was wrong to get sent off, but, Johnsson and Milijas are NOT the answer.
Not a happy clapper by the way, I can see the short comings as well as most. Mick’s reign will come to an end eventually, it does for all manager’s (except a couple I can think of) What useful purpose does ripping up the bedsheets and scrawling ‘Mac Out’ serve ? Eh ? Don’t bring that sort of stuff on Sunday FGS.

It doesn’t matter who plays or doesn’t if Mick McNumpty is still in charge for the rest of the season, it is his approach that is costing us points and keeping us at the bottom of the table.

His policy of being “hard to beat” and “solid” is, as Martin Keown rightly said on the BBC at the weekend, holding the side back when our all best team’s strength and talent lies in attacking the opposition.

Steve Morgan should know as a builder that when you hire a demolition company to knock a house down, you don’t let the demolition crew build the new house, you get someone better suited to do the job instead. McCarthy got us up, which vindicated his initial appointment, but he doesn’t have the experience or expertise to get a team into mid-table of the Premiership. His constant “fighter” and “graft” mentality means he will never have the ability to do anything more than ward off relegation, or select quality players over the “run around and close the ball down” players with limited technique like David Edwards, George Elokobi and Christophe Berra.

IF Wolves stay up they need to employ a manager who has a history of taking relegation strugglers and establishing them as solid mid-table sides. Martin O’Neil was a good example but I doubt he would have chosen to come to Wolves. Steve Bruce has a history of aachieving what Wolves need and would be a solid candidate,so would Alan Curbishley… others in the same category like Mark Hughes, Roy Hodgson and Chris Coleman have all recently found jobs elsewhere and SM has missed the boat.

IF Wolves go down then you may as well knock the Steve Bull Stand down and continue Moxey’s building project because only enough supporters will turn up to fill the other three stands.

Great to see Doyle back in form. He looks very good playing off Fletcher. He’s a sniper and a poacher and he is qucker than most in reacting to rebounds etc in the penalty area..

What agreat three points, but I hope MM has learned something from this, and that is that we look much better attacking the opposition than we do trying to defend.

Even against ten men in the second half we looked clueless in defence, and that flying save from Hennessey, one of many that the kid made, was essential to getting us maximum points.

I thought Berra was unlucky to have to drop to the bench, presumably Bassong is left footed, because I still think Johnson is a liability and just looks so clumsy and flat footed.

Hopefully we can kick some Baggy Backside on Sunday and drag them into the relagation mire too.

MM whilst you are in the mood to Thank,it may be a good idea for you to Thank majority of the fans and I dont mean the happy clappers.
Majority of the real fan’s realise how useless you have been again this season, yet none of us have gone out and demonstrated like they do at other grounds.
Other fans do this prior to even losing 7 on the bounce,or winning once since last year.
Some happy clappers say watch us go now because we beat “QPR” we are full of confidence..They forget before we lost 7 on the bounce we were unbeaten in three with two wins.
They forget they said the same when we beat Sunderland.!
I certainly beleive you brought us up from the Fizzy league and I am in no doubt most fans are grateful of you.
The question is how long do we have to remain grateful for that one season,as since we have survived but due to other teams failures especially the 1st season, last season we only survived 2 minutes from the end.
Against Blackburn last season we completed bottled it down 3-0 at half time!!!
The signs of your lack of ability at this level as been smacking us in the face on a regular basis, some of us have taken alot of punishment and some of us get kicks from being slapped the likes of Sir.Billy Quiet Noisy and a few others.
I wont let your inability smack me in the face anymore MM.(SORRY).
Some Happy clappers claim you should be Knighted as your tactics in the second half were brilliant,I say where have your tactics been for all of this season!?
It is obvious we were going to have to attack as we were losing and playing against 10 men, even a manager from the Non-League would have adapted an attack policy!
By your own addmission you say these players have been great for you hence why nearly all of them are from the Promotion team playing in the Premiership,in theory this is brilliant, but why is it that in most games they look as if they dont know each other?
Why have we not been able to develop a playing system in all this time!?
MM you are a decent man and did a wonderful job in getting us to the premiership,if you were any other person than Micko, you would in your summing up of the Wolves Manager say “The man is very lucky to have survived for so long with Wolves for such a poor record in the premiership, actually the worst record.”!

I will still be flying over on Saturday to watch the game on Sunday,a game I beleive we are well able to win and win comfortably,I also beleive that we will survive but attitudes have to change and change now!!
Players out of form have to be dropped from the side.
Players have to play in their favoured positions,as most of the players are at best, only good in the specialised positions,so how can you put them in other positions.
Keep it simple and let the opposition worry about us,let them worry about Jarvis,Fletcher,Doyle,Seb,Hamill etc. These are good enough players to trouble most teams but you have to give them the licence to Attack!
No use being defensive,as the record quiet clearly states even when we park buses in front of goal we “LOSE”!
In relation to confidence, players should all have confidence in their own abilities not how the team performs.Players have to play well before they gain added confidence that comes from winning.
I beleive MM you need to give them this confidence by letting them now they need to be positive and not to fear, fearing as brought them nothing this season,so what is the point fearing?
Players also need to get out of the mindset that we are experienced at being in this relegation fight and it will do wonders, rememeber how we fell like rubble against Blackburn last season?
That as continued for majority of this season,is this because the players think they will avoid relegation as they have been in this scrap before?
They have to get out of the mindset oh we lost this game but we play Wigan next we will get 3 points, what happens we lose!!
We have to go out to beat every team and have the tactics right from the kick off not when we are losing!!!
You have been at the club for 6 yrs nearly and nearly have worked with the same players yet you still mess up every week!!
So come on you have your wishes MM, your at the club now go out and do what you get paid for getting a few wins,it may be an idea to have written in players contracts lose and you dont get half wages win and you get all your wages with winning bonus, may be then we may be able to beat wigan,Norwich Swansea Blackburn etc.

The debate about McCarthy & Connor rages on but if Wolves stay up then they will still be here next season – fact. If Wolves are relegated they may be given a further opportunity to get us back up.

But for me its not oh great we won on Saturday this will kick start our season again or OMG we lose to Sandwell on Sunday. No it’s much deeper broader and more fundamental.

It’s the style of Wolves play which is just not pleasing on the eye – unless they are cornered and then it’s gung ho as it was on Saturday.

Until the current pairing of McCarthy & Connor are separated by a Hip Op and surgically removed from their positions nothing will change. Yes we will experience the euphoria of a sweet win occasionally but IMO thats in spite of them not because of them.

My early bird money stays firmly in my bank until they & we are released from this stranglehold of negativity.

But oh please can we just enter Sunday on the front foot and go at them as we did against Villa in the first half and maintain that for 90 minutes.

Weren’t they the supporters who were going to put black bin liners over the empty seats at the Emirates against Blackburn ? They didn’t in the end ‘cos they didn’t bother to go. (How about that for an own goal ?)
We even had Man United fans criticising Sir Alex after that recent blip. Just shows you all clubs have their own share of DHs supporting them, not just us.

Typical! The Radio WM phone-in format has changed with footy ‘celebs’ being introduced. Last night, Steve Froggatt was singing Wolves’ praises regarding how far we’ve come since he and his team-mates consistently flopped. Fair enough; I’ll buy that -but there was no mention of the plethora of sub-standard players this club has bought, only to reject soon after. Hardly a rounded picture, Steve.

On Monday, we had David Kelly describing Mick’s tactics at QPR as “superb, wonderful, etc”(or words very close to that effect). Certainly, Kelly spoke of Mick in nothing but glowing terms. So, two ex-Wolfs in the space of 24 hours having their say on WWFC, with not one word of constructive or observational criticism to be heard. Well, that’s not good enough because debates should be all about balance. There again, what can we expect from one-eyed sycophants who have vested interests in keeping their former clubs sweet? The 3M’s are all accountable for the turmoil of this wretched season, yet if you listen to Froggatt and Kelly, you’d think everything was rosy in the garden.

David and Steve, your loyal defence of Wolves is both commendable and admirable. However, I prefer a spade to be called a spade. Don’t insult our intelligence by butt-kissing the Wolves’ hierarchy, please -just tell it as it is, without bias. Sure, I appreciate that you guys (as former players) enjoy the privileges of club hospitality and you naturally want to protect those benefits…but if you can’t speak freely and fairly, leave it to those who can. So far, it’s been nothing more than a 3M’s propoganda show, in my view.

Oh, dear…Richard Sneekes is Radio WM’s celebrity guest tonight. I guess that’ll mean Albi*n are on the verge of Champions League qualification, then…

    130. ye old south bank. agree with most of your post.

but for a balanced view of your post i must dissagree with your assumption,

that if any ex player dissagrees with the current regime and the way they run the club, that they will some how lose any hospitality rights.

for example, john richards, steve bull, kenny hibbitt and many others have criticised wolves many times in the past, but still enjoy hospitality at molinuex.

you want folks to speak freely and fairly, yet because you dissagree with thier pro wolves view you think they are insulting your intelligence.

if you dont like the 3ms, thats fair enough, as im no fan of moxey, but dont let your memories of cullis, wright, broadbent, mullen, swinbourne, etc turn your undoubted support for wwfc into hatred for the current regime. utw.

132 – (The New North Bank) Thank you for your reply. I’d better explain myself here, so there’s no misunderstanding:

On reflection, my (poor) choice of words were inappropriate, misleading and didn’t really express my thoughts adequately. Sincere apologies for that. What I meant to say (but failed to make clear) is that SOME retired pro’s often come across as feeling somehow ‘compelled’ (with notable exceptions, of course) to ‘toe the party line’ for fear of upsetting the club (or certain persons therein). I didn’t mean to suggest that David and Steve were LITERALLY afraid they’d lose benefits as such -merely that it could place them in an an awkward situation in having to ‘explain themselves’ at some future point, being the pleasant, nice guys we all know they are. They don’t strike me as being contentious or outspoken young men, so I heard what I expected to hear.

However, I’d much rather hear fair, critical analysis (with both pros and cons afforded the listener) rather than be fed a diet of unilateral plaudits being showered on the manager. That’s why I think it can be seen as “insulting” to people’s intelligence, my friend -especially when fans witness the ‘product’ on offer, first hand, every game.

We all know Wolves have looked dreadfully inadequate (and defensively a complete shambles) for nearly all of this season, so I believe ‘expert opinion’ should reflect the club’s -and particularly the manager’s- performance. Making changes brought the desired result at QPR, yes, but it doesn’t change the fact that Mick is a renowned tamperer who sometimes gets lucky, yet nobody (the press, Radio WM reporters or guest, retired footballers) ever question his bizarre team selections and make him answer for his decisions. In my 45 years’ paying support, I’ve never known any previous manager be as unaccountable and as consistently protected as Mick is. Still, that’s just my unbiased view.

Finally, I assure you that I do not have -and will not have- any “hatred” towards the current regime, so I don’t know why you said that. I merely question certain aspects of the club, nothing more, so please don’t confuse the two. I’m not satisfied with McCarthy’s performance since we gained promotion, nor am I a fan of Moxey or Morgan at this precise time, either. However, as a fair-minded person, my views are always subject to change, depending upon their performance, honesty with the fans and entertainment value provided. As football is, apparently, a ‘business’ these days, then fans are mere ‘customers’ and accordingly have the right to question the ‘product’ on offer. My love for WWFC will remain undimished, though, come what may.
