Under-fire Wolves boss Mick McCarthy this afternoon left little room for doubt that he was unimpressed by owner Steve Morgan's dressing room showdown with his players in the immediate aftermath of Tuesday's 3-0 defeat by Liverpool.

McCarthy, now preparing for tomorrow's crunch clash at QPR, was asked how he felt about Morgan's intervention after a defeat which left Wolves second from bottom of the Premier League.

"It's common knowledge the chairman came down, so you know that," McCarthy said. "I've spoken to him about that. It's been sorted out. He knows my feelings on it."

When further pressed on the issue, McCarthy was reluctant to aggravate a clearly sensitive disagreement between owner and manager.

But he added: "I don't need to give you any more headlines. You might want to ask me about my frustrations. I wouldn't say I was delighted by it. I have made my feelings quite clear. But anything I have said has been said to Steve privately and that's where it will remain. We're second bottom; we've only won two games in 20. Do I need to sensationalise everything?

"It's never happened to me before. I like to sort things out with the persons involved. I've said my bit and we move on."

There is little doubt that this is McCarthy re-drawing the boundaries of what he clearly feels is his territory alone – the dressing room.

But there is also no doubt the chairman's angry outburst has brought matters to a head and adds further significance to chief executive Jez Moxey's determined appeal for unity today (see above).

The players are heading for Loftus Road determined to deliver a much-improved performance.

"We need a response. The club needs a response from me, from the team," admitted McCarthy.

"We're going down there to try to win a game like we always do. But there are no magic formulas. Hard work, performance, don't make mistakes. That's what you are looking for. These players don't owe me anything. They never let me down. They support me and they are doing their best."
