Steve Morgan blows top at Wolves players

Thursday 2nd February 2012, 11:00AM GMT.

Wolves head for Saturday’s crunch showdown with QPR on the back of a dressing room rollicking from owner Steve Morgan.

The chairman broke with protocol and stormed into a stunned home dressing room after Tuesday night’s second-half surrender to Liverpool  to deliver a scathing attack on the players.

The dressing-down came in front of manager Mick McCarthy and is thought to be the first time Morgan has ever delivered such an emotional  post-match reaction  to a performance.

But with pressure mounting as Wolves’ Premier League future becomes more precarious , Morgan could not hide his anger after the team hit one of the low points of the season.

McCarthy is unlikely to have welcomed Morgan’s heated intervention but with two wins from the last 21 games, the Wolves manager is also feeling the heat of a Molineux mood which is turning ugly.

In his only briefing with the media since the start of the season, the  millionaire who took over in August 2007 repeated his belief in McCarthy’s ability to pull the team to safety in a third consecutive Premier League campaign.

But he also admitted results had been “unacceptable” and a long way short of what had been envisaged of Wolves this season.

Last night’s results mean that Wolves head for QPR on Saturday in danger of falling six points behind fifth-from-bottom Rangers if they lose.

It is a volatile atmosphere for Tottenham loan defender Sebastien Bassong, to step into but the 25-year-old Cameroon international is still relishing the opportunity provided by  deadline night signing.

“There are some great players here and a great manager. I know that there is a challenge ahead and I wanted to be a part of it,” said Bassong. “Knowing what I do about Wolves there is a great spirit in the team and the manager and they play with spirit.”

He Should be venting his anger at the manager. McCarthy signed the players and they simply aren’t good enough.

More to the point, Morgan should take a long hard look at himself and then rip up his compton park plans, and put the money into the team, where it’s needed.

Good, let’s hope it shows him and the players that they are not going to be here forever and take the club for a ride.

    This is a joke, right?

Shocking man management, has this guy really ran (running) multi million pound businesses?

Mr. Morgan – If you had faith in the manager you have in charge of your business (in this case, Wolves) you would not need to resort to front line interference. On the other hand, YOU have the power to be able to change that management if things go wrong yet you have single handedly failed to do so.

As the saying goes, you have made your bed (by frequently backing a sub-standard management and coaching structure) so now you and the rest of us must lie in it. All you have succeeded in doing here is making yourself, and more importantly Wolves look very stupid.

    I despair..

It’ll not be used again until me and others like me stop being taken for granted.
I’ll not put another penny piece into this club until I’m stopped from being taken for granted.
The quality of the product is terrible. There seems no plan to make it better.

Not a shrink by any means, but might be be projecting his own disappointment in himself, for letting this whole thing escape his him for as long as he’s allowed? Maybe he is also upset with himself for. It acting sooner? Hard to say. Still, finally we see that he as well has reached a fill line of the apathy that is rising amongst the troops. Even on telly you could see the despondent body language this past Tuesday. More rollocking from the head honcho; let’s hope it has the desired effect at Loftus Road!

Rather than throw your toys out the pram hows about we instill a decent manager to get the most out the players, like I was saying you should have done before O’Neil went to Sunderland.

Bad decision making by you Steve is why we are where we are. Be it lack of investment on field instead of buildings or keeping this “unacceptable” situation exactly the same.

Not surprised by this, for the first time Morgan came under attack from the fans on Tuesday night as fans begin to realise that he is making a huge personal fortune out of the club and spending nothing on the team. There can be no excuses for the display on the field against Liverpool but at last people are realising that the blame doesn’t lie entirely at Mick’s door. There can’t be a manager in the whole league that doesn’t want to strengthen his team, but they are all dictated to by the owner’s budget. In our case we have spent almost nothing on the team since scraping survival last year but are pumping money into building projects which to all intents and purposes feathers Morgans nest. Personally I’m a big fan of Mick but equally I can see why others aren’t but responsibility must ultimately lie at the owner’s door. The most depressing thing however, is that that the light at the end of the tunnel has finally gone out and barring miracles we are going down, and there are no guarantees of coming back up.

We needed a top Centre Back and a top striker in the summer, players who have been there and done it. What did we get, Roger Johnson and no striker.

All we have now is a team of grafters, and that’s not enough to stay in this league season after season.

I see we now have words of wisdom from the captain, “we need to keep McCarthy everything will be ok, a new mangaer wouldn’t make any difference”.
Well no we don’t, yes he would the first thing to happen would be a change of tactics, ie stop messing about passing across the field get the ball and backwards, pass to the front men probably two not the insane one and wingers.

Stop back peddling off defenders, it’s not rocket science.

Play who is in form, get the fans on side show some passion, show some excitement to the people who pay all their wages

He is also quoted as saying what McCarthy has done for us, yes he has but I am sick and tired of hearing this, he has been paid for that it is here and now that matters, we are in deep trouble

McCarthy says we only have to defend better, yes we do but we need to do a hell of a lot more like scoring and taking shots!
That is his problem he hasn’t a clue, you could see it at the Liverpool game

The only way to get Morgan to do something and god knows why he has to be made to it is for the fans to take action.

‘Never Again’ said a visibly drained Steve Morgan, after the final day drama last season, where Wolves only stayed up by virtue of other Teams performing even worse than Wolves on that day.

So why was only Roger Johnson added to that pretty poor Team over the Summer?

Why was the consistent line coming from the Club and local media in the early part of the Season that RJ was the missing link and that we know had a squad of mid table standing?

Why after 3 games and 7 points did we not kick on and sign decent players when the name and equity of Wolves was at its highest in the last 30 years?

Only 3 people know the answer : The 3 M’s

    What a complete shambles……..
I cannot believe that an individual as smart as Mr Morgan would go charging into the Wolves dressing room venting his anger to the players no less…I am absolutely horrified that he should ignore protocol and blast the players direct in front of the Manager, quite an humiliating embarrassment for McCarthy, having his authority taken from him in front of his charges. While Morgan is the clubs owner, under no circumstances should he have approached the players in the way that he did, that is McCarthy’s job.
If McCarthy had any guts he should have resigned on the spot, because Morgan made it quite clear to him and the players, that he has lost all confidence in him.

Well, at last. something has roused the anger in Mr Morgan, and he has let fly, but for heavens sake, is the man blind or stupid, the anger should have been directed to McCarthy and in private, and it was McCarthy’s job to pass it onto the players.

This without a doubt will upset the players, and do nothing for belief and motivation, and this outburst will clearly show the players that all is not well at Wolverhampton.

Clearly, Morgan has stripped McCarthy of all authority over his players, and in the real world, there is little open to Mr Morgan other than to relieve McCarthy of his services and replace him without delay

The present Manager will never ever be able to command the authority and direction over his players in the future

It does send out a serious message that undermimes MM, but when you invest so much money into something so big, there comes a time where enough is enough. However, on the other hand, Morgan has to look at his own priorities for the club and particularly opportunities missed AGAIN in actually strengthening the squad to not be in this position.

From a fans perspective (because its us that matter the most) – enough is enough and something needs doing of proportions likened to one of Jesus’ miracles!

To deflect criticism now onto either the players or MM is completely unacceptable. He should be big enough along with his number two Jez Moxey to accept responsibility and come clean instead of looking for scapegoats. Do you imagine we’d be in the mess we are now if you had done the right thing 2 years ago and handed any of the above the £20m-£30m McCarthy has been afforded since?

Last season West Ham, Blackpool and Blues ALL stuck with their ‘not good enough’ managers…what happened to them?
Now look at those who last season, and this, had the foresight to change things.

This team is on a decline. I never thought i would say it but as i have over a four hundred mile round trip and limited funds, i am starting to question the investment over the enjoyment in going to see Wolves play. This decline needs to be arrested. However, i feel we have to accept now that Wolves are doomed to the drop. We must also be realists and realise we will probably lose Fletcher, jarvis,Berra, Doyle, O Hara, Johnson and lose Frimpong and Bassong on loan. After these guys have gone, i think this reveals the paucity of the squad. As such, we need to focus not on a manager, who may or may not keep us up, but one who is prepared to stick with us and has a record of doing well with limited resources. Accordingly i hope we can tempt Chris Houghton from Birmingham for the job. Lets face facts they outplayed us with a second team in the FA cup.!!

When we came up, we accepted that we’re likely to be a yo-yo team, but two lucky escapes gave us the chance to do something about it. Instead, M&M allowed Mental Mickey to pour yet more good money after bad and are now watching him melt into oblivion as the season disappears before his eyes. Have they not watched him buy Berra (who wasn’t even good enough in the Championship), ruin Doyle, persist with Calamity Karl, give the captaincy to that Bluenose muppet etc etc etc… Any Wolves fan clinging to the loyalty card, ffs get a grip, where are you seeing that loyalty returned??

The chairman gives the manager money to buy players, the manager then chooses the players he wants. It is no good blaming the players, this run is down to Morgan and Mccarthy. You can blame players for a bad game or two, but over a season if problems persist, it is at a higher level you need to look. Morgan and Mccarthy are the ones to blame, no one else. yes some of the players have played poorly, but they was chosen by Mccarthy and Morgan to play a part in our team.

The whole set up is poor from the tactics to coaching staff to the amount of injuries we have a season (but this is always a good excuse). No youth coming through, no players anybody would have (Fletch and Wayne aside) and a captain who will not admit how rubbish he is but blames everyone around!

I’m sure there will be a lot of posters rejoicing in this news. But, while I fully understand Morgans frustration, I’m not sure whether it’s a good idea to have a rant at the players in front of the manager. By doing so he is underminding the managers authority which in turn will make it more difficult to raise spirits in the dressing room.

There are some people who have compared our situation to that of Sunderland and how results have improved with the appointment of a new manager. Fair enough, but equally you could compare our situation to that of Bolton who have retained their manager and have also improved from a disastrous first half of the season.

With fifteen games to go there are still a lot of points to won (or lost if you take the negative view). Of those there are only three games against the top clubs. In recent years we have seen teams such as Hull and Blackpool amass a good points haul in the first half of the season and then have a catastrophic second half. Who is to say that won’t happen this year?

I doubt whether there are many supporters at other clubs who presently have a points total in the 20′s, will feel that their team is safe. It’s going to be difficult, but by no means impossible for Wolves to retrieve the situation.

The signing of Bassong and the return of O’Hara should help. If some supporters wish to throw the towel in at this stage, well so be it. I believe that it is still possible to avoid relegation and consequently will continue to support the club. The time to review McCarthy’s status as manager is in May.

In an ideal world Mr Morgan would have kept out of the dressingroom and kept his feelings to the boardroom however, I do not blame him at all for finally taking action in this way.

Keeping faith with his manager is how it should be. But only to a point.

Three years of premiership football, and we do not seem to heave learned anything. We have a lack of flair in the centre of the pitch and we are shopping around for bargain basement signings rather than experience and skill.

Ok we have in on loan Frimpong in the middle and Bassong at the back, but what were we doing pre season and for the first half of the year.

How many players have come in and gone out without being given an opportunity, and how many players have been consistently played when they should be dropped.

I believe that it is vital that Wolves are run in the black and should indeed look to invest in all parts of our business, based on medium and long term plans.

Mick McCarthy has had enough transfer money £40M and enough wage budget £35m pa for our team to be performing better than our results have shown.he has also had enough time and enough support from both the fans as well as the board.

It is however time for a change. We need a new manager, who is experienced and can provide us with attractive football and tactical ability on the pitch as well as managing ego’s in the dressing room.

We need an ethos within the academy that is of excellence and the highest standards and a style of play that will nurture talent and flair. And that will produce players for the 1st team on a regular basis.

If no one is available and not in employment. Go and get someone from another club. Compensation of £2m for a quality manager who can take us forward within the premier league will be money well spent.

We all love the club, and we all want Wolves to succeed. To replace Mick McCarthy and Terry Conner now is not a knee jerk reaction. It is common sense.

I do not believe Steve Morgan’s agenda is to make loads of money out of us.There are many better investments around ,rather than owning and funding a football club. That said I think he has been misguided in spending on infrastructure rather than properly rebuilding the team to meet the demands of Premier football. The worry is that he still does not get it.We lost to Liverpool because they have better players. In my opinion Mick McCarthy has done well to keep us in the Prem so far with a bunch of largely Championship quality footballers.Liverpool’s first goal on Tuesday was made by Adam and scored by Carroll. Both players were wanted by Mick McCarthy ,but the owner and chief executive failed to sign them.If Steve Morgan doesn’t understand this is the root of our problems, then there is no hope for us.

With QPR managing a result against Villa the pressure is now truly on WWFC with a 5 point gap to close before even getting near the safer part of the table, more if they lose on Saturday.

Relegation, clear-out and rebuild under a new set up with the emphasis on youth and talent not work rate. If it took 3 years to get back to the PL at least WWFC would then have a chance of staying there.

All going swimmingly on the Molineux PR front – I liked Roger Johnson’s comments that changing the manager wouldn’t make any difference to what the players do on the pitch. Really?? Perhaps changing the manager AND his backroom staff might. SM is blinkered if he thinks storming into the dressing room is going to make an iota of difference. We have as much quality in our players as teams in mid-table, but they have better managers and coaches. We have no idea how to defend, we let men run with the ball, stand off, our build up is too slow allowing teams to get men behind the ball etc etc. The problem Mr Morgan is right in front of your Director’s seat about fifteen feet below you. The two men “in charge” on the bench. Defeat against QPR on Saturday will be another nail in the coffin which could be nailed shut by the end of this month. The problems on the pitch with the way we play as a team (or 11 individuals at times) have not changed in the last three years – so why hasn’t something been done sooner? Enough said on this page, either love Mick or hate him, I look at the Wolves and think to myself “you’ve had your chances”. Three seasons in the premier league, two we survived but sadly this time we are doomed: I hope that it doesn’t happen but it looks inevitable.
Personally I would prefer the mediocrity of the Championship with regular wins rather than getting thumped by all and sundry home and away, supporters despondent and in total disarray.
What I feel is sad is that we do have some quality players and I think that perhaps they are resigned to departing in the summer, so why break a gut? Much better to keep the fitness up, avoid long term injury and spend your desire to win with your agent and negotiating a new contract. Look at Kevin Doyle, still runs around but his commitment has gone, resigned to the fact that he is moving on in June. Jarvis, same, Fletcher… I could go on.
Let’s face it, we are going nowhere and apart from one season previously we have spent over 20 years in the second tier or lower. Forget Morgan, he has never committed anything like the money he would have had to at Liverpool, Moxey…well Moxey is Moxey. I feel sorry for Mick McCarthy, one thing is certain, he had demonstrated commitment and passion far greater than the Chairman and players.
