Dave Edwards: We can’t settle for a draw
Friday 27th January 2012, 12:59PM GMT.
Midfielder Dave Edwards today insisted Wolves must not settle for another draw in Tuesday’s clash against Liverpool.
Wolves face Kenny Dalglish’s side having failed to win at Molineux in five games, while they have drawn four out of their last six in the Premier League and are without a win in 10 altogether.
Boss Mick McCarthy, who was at Anfield to watch the Reds reach the Carling Cup final with aggregate victory over Manchester City on Wednesday night, will be hoping the semi-final, and their FA Cup fourth-round tie against Manchester United tomorrow, will leave them jaded before they face Wolves.
And Edwards, who joined his team-mates on a paintballing trip yesterday, believes they must target three points from the game after dropping into the relegation zone.
“We’ve got a free weekend and we need to be feeling fresh and going for a crucial three points,” said the Wales international.
“Liverpool are a very good team and in the past maybe we’d have taken a point against them.
“But we could do with all three and that’s what we’ll be aiming to do.”
Edwards revealed Wolves have embarked on a confidence-rebuilding job this week after it took a battering following Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Villa when they had played so well in the first half.
“Home games like that are ones we need to win,” said Edwards.
“It was a big hit to our confidence and it’s been a case of building things back up again this week.”
Edwards has only just started firing on all cylinders after a niggling groin complaint.
And he is disappointed at the continued disruption in the middle of the park after Karl Henry was banned for three games for his sending off against Villa.
Henry’s absence is the latest blow to hit the centre of midfield, with Nenad Milijas recently banned for three games and Jamie O’Hara missing the last seven matches after a double hernia operation.
“It’s disappointing it will get broken up,” he said. “We’ve not had much luck in central midfield this season.
“It’s been a bit of a problem position in terms of getting some consistency in there. But it’s up to whoever comes into the team to do well and stake a claim.”
