Wolves boss promises Michael Kightly a long run
Thursday 26th January 2012, 3:36PM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today promised Michael Kightly an extended chance to prove his Premier League credentials – and declared the winger his best signing for the club.
Kightly was man of the match against Villa in last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at home when he scored his first Wolves goal since March 2009 just a week after being recalled to the starting line-up against Tottenham.
McCarthy is poised to give the 26-year-old several consecutive games.
“What he needs now is seven, eight, nine, 10 games in the Premier League on the bounce,” said the boss.
“That then will tell us where he is.
“Physically, he’s just like brand new. He’s completed the last two Premier League games without any problems at all. He’s been terrific.”
Asked if Kightly has been his best signing for Wolves, McCarthy added: “I think at £25,000, for what he did for us in the Championship, I couldn’t argue with that.”
And despite the player’s misfortune with injuries, McCarthy is already convinced Kightly is a Premier League player.
“Yes he is, because he’ll just get stronger and fitter and he’ll be fine,” he said.
“He had Premier League ability before that, and his ability was never in doubt for me.”
Defeat to Villa plunged Wolves into the drop zone for the first time this season, but McCarthy has no shortage of belief in Kightly’s ability to help turn things around.
“Michael has really good qualities – he just needed to be physically right,” he said.
“He came back from his loan at Watford and looked different from when he left.
“Players get their ‘je ne sais quoi’ or spirit or their love of the game or the love of everyone else or the happiness, or whatever it is that they get back and the world is a much rosier, sunnier place.”

Adam Hammill is going to love this news, Kightly comes back and walks into the team, another one of McCarthys favorites

Man of the 1st half! Went missing in the 2nd half as soon as Villa changed their tactics…. Warnock to left back. No plan B from MM and clipboard! We seem to have a problem with motivation! We always concede early and start the second poorly. We could of taken Villa to the cleaners!

I personally think he was better than Jarvis in the championship and Jarvis is only where he is now because of the extra experience he’s been getting. Kightly will hopefully catch up and we’ll have another potential England winger on our hands. Would love for SEB to do it too but that’s unlikely.
Shame we were so desperate for Hunt now. Looks like he’s been dropped to 3rd choice. I also love watching Hammill who has a hint of Beckham in his crosses. Annoying that the majority of our best players are wingers whilst where we’re lacking depth elsewhere. Perhaps the attitude of not being a selling club and being so tight on signing new ones need to be looked at. Perhaps selling Jarvis or Hunt wouldn’t be such a bad idea if we can use the money to tighten the back 4 up.
We’re having no problem scoring but our defeats have come down to defence again. Only 1 clean sheet in the premiership yet we’ve only failed to score in 5. We’d be in the top half of the table fighting for Europe if we had a better defence.
Good job Mick’s only signed 2 more mid fielders then.

I’ll tell you where he’ll be Mick; in the Championship with the rest of you. Thanks a bunch.

Interesting ! A pity one or two others have not been given a proper chance, there may have been behind the scene issues but Millijas, Myokolo, Van Damme & The Hoff spring to mind !

Not that I don’t like I kightly I do, but this headline is a disgrace and should be enough to get you the sack let alone everything else.
Hammill has never done anything wrong, yet where was your backing for him?
You are an utter disgrace and I feel like Wolverhampton wanderers are now having a laugh at mine and our expense!! I will not set foot near another wolves match while you are still in charge, and am now thinking about extended that to while Steve Morgan is at the helm………

well if your adam hammill you must be thinking WTF, well adam join the many wolves fans who have been thinking the same!!!

Agree that he struggled in the second half with their change of tactics but that attempt by Warnock to break his leg early in the half – and after all of his injury probs – it is part excusable.

Sam Winnall out on loan, another youngster not being given a chance.

5 Wolf at Gate. You picked some strange examples.
I think Milijas has been given quite enough chances, thank you very much. Problem is with Henry and O’Hara out, and maybe Frimpong, we could still see him puffing and blowing in midfield.
Hoff. You really HAVE to be kidding !
van Damme. Mommy didn’t like him getting home late for tea
Moyoukolo. We may yet see him back.

Sounds like Mick is clutching at straws, because of the clubs failure to bring in any quality in January?
Micks team vs Villa included Hennersey, Foley Berra, Ward, Edwards, Henry, Jarvis, Kights and Ebanks…only Johnson and Fletch have been signed since weve been in the Prem who started.
Doesnt that tell you something about Micks signings? Were still playing with a championship team in the Premiership “3″ years after promotion!!
I wouldnt personally trust him in spending my kids dinner money!!

Kightly as been a revelation since his return, no second half against Villa ? ,that was because Frimpong got carried off,Henry got sent off.
Frimpong was attacking Villa, turning his marker, creating space, then feeding Kightly quality ball.Cant do that from Hospital, no other fit wolves midfielders are capable of that kind of performance.O Hara Injured.

Kights goal against the Vile was top drawer and I’d love to see more of the same. However, “best signing”? Based purely on bang for bucks spent, then yes. In other respects, you could choose Fletcher, for example, whose goals have been priceless. Besides, he’s now worth far more than the £7m we paid for him.
I’ve got to feel sorry for Hammill, though. Mick has a tendency to virtually guarantee his favourites a spot, and always to the detriment of deserving cases.
I remember McCarthy saying years ago that if someone had the shirt, then they’d keep it until someone took it away from them. So, Mick, what did Hammill ever do wrong? Even when Jarvo was off form, he couldn’t get a look-in. Instead of promising Michael a long run, why not ask him to EARN it, Mick?
It’s now officially Henry, Kightly and nine others, I assume. Great motivation for those out of the reckoning.

fantastic player, actually frimpong was man of the match, but villa put two players on kights and thats why they won, jarvis should have switched wings second half.
1.daz, hammill was awfull against blues.
4.magician.put a bet on then if your so confident. ive already put my money on wwfc staying up with or without mcarthy.
5.wolf at gate. milijas cant run, myokolo got caught out of postion too many times and was unable to improve unlike berra untill that villa mistake, van damme got homesick after 3 games, and the hoff could’nt outjump defenders shorter than him.

I don’t care what any of you say I love Kites! The best thing about last week was the sight of Kites as he used to be !

Kightly is a very good player, no doubt about that! But is inow very clear that useless Mcarthy has his fav’s. When we get relegated i wonder if his loyalty will be with what is left of the squad? We will see.
See that Onouha has signed for QPR! What clear ambition they have compared to Pol Pot Morgan! We have miseed out on two very good managers and now on a very good defensive player, just what we needed, but obviously Morgan will not pay!!!!!
Dare say there will be more bleeting about players we have missed etc, but, not to worry we have has been’s in the pipeline! Fear not useless Mcarthy will sort it with his dumb tactics, eeeehhh in Barnsley we hoof it lad, thats the way! Hoof it here, hoof there, hoof it back!
Dire, absolutely dire football!

Mick thinks Kightly is his best signing. Poor old “Wardy” – how upset is he going to be!

How to alienate ten other players at a stroke! Does any good manager ever say in public a player will get a run of games in the team, given that must be at others’ expense?
Seeing Kites back that has been a real high spot in recent dark days. The main reason he faded against the Villa was Frimpong’s departure, look who kept giving him the ball in the first half. McLeish did NOT make a brilliant tactical switch!
5.
Milijas has had plenty of chances – cultured left foot (no right) takes too long to pick a pass, doesn’t track players he is supposed to be marking.
Mouyokolo – not really sure if he is any good but hopefully getting fit and sharp to come back – off the wage bill for now. Injured repeatedly when he came.
Van Damme – great attitude on the pitch but clearly wanted to go back from the day he came(presumably nobody took him to the Newhampton). Played plenty when he came.
Hoff – no idea why we signed him – big gamble which definitely didn’t pay off. Got more of a chance than he deserved.
All the above have nothing to complain about. Hammill may have more room for complaint, but he should be like Fletcher – work hard, get fit, keep your head down, wait for your chance and grab it when it comes.

I wonder if Jonsson will suffer the same fate as Hammill i.e bought by MM but relctantly used? Hammill seems to have been badly treated and at least a year of his career has been in limbo. As for Jonsson, will he replace Henry during his suspension? We must wait and see, but if he is not good enough to be selected then why was he bought ? One and a half million paid for the pair of them has not yet impacted on the side , however we wouldn’t gamble on two months of Robbie Keanne who is evidently an IMPACT player.Too many players have been bought at bargain basement to little effect, other than an accumulation of poorly invested money that could have bought two or three players that could have made the impact needed.Incompetent managerial and financial decision making .Now look where we are Morgan .

Number 3, you are an idiot!!!!
I say this because of these ridiculous quotes.
“Kightly will hopefully catch up and we’ll have another potential England winger on our hands”
“I also love watching Hammill who has a hint of Beckham in his crosses”
“We’re having no problem scoring”
“We’d be in the top half of the table fighting for Europe if we had a better defence”
…I didn’t think it would happen, but Number 3, you are more of an idiot than AVB for his stupid “B” team idea.

Looks like Kightly will be just like a new signing.
How many times do we have players coming back and they get used as an excuse for us not buying/loaning in decent new players.

Kites could be a legend at wolves and is probably the most exciting player we have had for many years, along with mark davies who for some reason mick didnt fancy as a centre mid!! however i do agree with 5 wolf at gate, to many players have simply been overlooked. Some of the departed players are proving themselves elsewhere, Milijas, hammill, guedioura only have to put one foot wrong to get dropped but others like henry, stearman, berra have to have several bad games and still sometimes keep their place.
If I were Hammill or Vokes I’d ask for a transfer, no point being at Wolves. Totally agree with posts 1 & 2. Hammill plays well gets dropped, Kites walks back in the team and will play even if he has a poor game! I want to see if he is good enough but wait your turn like everyone else! You can’t have favorites!!!

Thats good news he’s a jinx
Wolves have never won a premiership game that he has played in, fact

Wolf at gate. Spot on sunshine. If he likes you your IN. If he does not like you your OUT. Mark Davies springs to mind.
However this does also prove a point I have been making for ages. The excuse for a CEO knows absolutely nothing about football, remember the Hoddle scenario? The scouting staff are not much better as they identify the players to sign,Eastwood et al. The manager only knows players he has signed before.
They are not a very good CV’s are they whoever’s you look at.
The best back room guy ever was Evans. Mark Davies, Robbie Keane are just two of his prodigy’s.

Love Kites but the way Muppet guarantees some players and refuses to play others is bloody annoying. I also rate Hamill but he has been excluded since ‘apparently’ clapping the South Bank when they ridiculed Muppet. It’s McCarty’s ego 1st and look where that has got us. Mick you are arrogant, clueless and stupid!!!
Hang on a run of 8, 9, 10 consecutive games? I agree but isn’t that what Nenad & Adlene have needed for a long time? Where’s their chance of gelling into the starting 11? I agree with whoever said Hammill won’t be happy.. Mind you on form it’s not the wrong option. Hammill should be used as an impact sub more often though(i.e every game). Just my opinion.
Why not afford the same chance to Hammill? Sure for one half Michael looked excellent but second half…… Mick you really are a joke the way you treat the players (except favourites) of course.
What a ridiculous statement. Kightly is as yet an unproven premier player- he had 20 good minutes against Villa second half he was anonymous. Hammill has made more impact than M K so far and MM treats him like dirt. Typical MM bias – no offence to Kightly I really hope he comes good but MM must be the worst man manager in the world ( ask Roy Keane)
If only he was a left back instead of a ‘right winger’.
Now that has me wondering if McCarthy may have an idea to play him there.
Not unlikely with MM’s history.
16 Sue,
You are quite right he is an excellent player and will provide us with some much needed goals.
However the statement shows again why McCarthy is not fit for management if you were one of the other players why would you bother trying to get into the side.
Lack of competition gives way to complacency and dissatisfaction, leading to non performance.
If this was any other business he and the club would be taken to the Opportunities Commission and quite rightly so.
As someone said we have two and nine others at this rate we will soon have “The Magnificent Seven”

People said that about gareth bale until spurs won after 2 years and 24 games in which he played in. Its just a coincedence, kightly showed in the first half if u give him the service, he will cause havoc in the opposition defence, dont pass to him or hoof it upfield and he will be ineffective.
I do feel sorry for hammill, someone pointed out he had a bad game at blues, i actually thought he was one of the better players but it just shows that mick has his favourites because hunt was a million times worse and still got a place on the bench ahead of him, also when jarvis was on a bad run, hammill still didnt get a sniff.

Our best team when available?
Hennessey
Foley Craddock Johhnson Ward
Kightly O’Hara Frimpong Jarvis
Doyle
Fletcher
With changes:

Hammill for Kightly
Gueduiora for Frimpong
On another match – Henry in with Doyle dropped to bench.
This should be a team to keep us in the EPL.

Adam Hammill could be a top player for Wolverhampton Wanderers but McCarthy wont give him a chance. He was the same with Fletch last season,McCarthy wouldnt play him untill because of injuries he had to.Under McCarthy we are a boring horrible to watch football team,,I am a many years season ticket holder,I never miss a match, but the truth is I am not enjoying it,when the subject of football comes up in the pub,and people say what a load of sh-t we are,I have to shut my mouth..How long is it since we could brag about the Wolves???Sitting in the North Bank, freezing wearing a paka mac, watching thousands pound a week footballers playing rubbish football,,I must be mental.

I think it’s a little premature to assess Kightly on his performance against Villa. There’s no doubt it was a thrilling 45minutes which reminded me and many others of his impact in the championship.
The second half was a different matter. Partly because of the substitution, but mainly because of the two incidents that changed the whole course of the game.
If Kightly can play like he did in that first half for 90minutes each game he plays, it will prove once and for all, that he really is a class premiership player. One thing that people overlook with Kightly is his understanding with the fullback (usually Foley). He does his fair share of tracking back and helping out the defence.
Not sure why people feel sorry for Hammill. Talented player but he tends to splutter like a faulty firework. He’ll go on an exciting run beating players but then waste the ball by not passing it to teammate, or simply run out of room and lose the ball. Has the ability to send over a wicked cross but not often enough for me. However, he’s still young enough to learn and certainly worth persisting with.
All the calls for Guediora must be from people who haven’t seen him play this season. Last Prem start was v Wigan when he came off at half time and was lucky to last that long. I had high hopes for him, but his ‘win the game by myself every time I get the ball’ attitude where he runs as fast as possible straight at the opposing goal and then shoots at one of the corner flags is not really what we need to add to our midfield.

We’re going down this year fellow fans!
But even if we did change the manager, we wont change our policy, so who is there to come in?
I’m not Mick’s biggest fan by a long shot, but who else is there?
And I’m sorry Kights, but walking straight back in after haveng players waiting patiently who have more than enough ability smacks of favouritism! Same old same old.
I will support forever though.

It’s great news that Kightly is back. If his fitness and form reach the levels of his pre-injury days he will be a huge asset.
For me Hammill is a one trick pony with his crosses from the right(although good at it I’ll admit) but he plays with his head down too often, a bit like Shaun Wright-Phillips, so he is an impact player at best.
Where I disagree with McCarthy here, according to the impression that the report gives, is him promising Kightly a guaranteed a run in the team irrespective of the form he shows. That can’t be right. It may upset other players in the squad and could cause Kightly to become complacent.
Poor man management.
The next few games will be telling for Kites he had the advantage last week over the inexperienced LB but McCleish worked that out and at half time put Warnock on which kept Kites quiet for the rest of the game whether Prem managers will now pay more attention to Kites and try and mark him out the game remains uncertain but he has always been one of my favourite players and I hope it works out for him.On another note its essential we keep Hammill a very bright player that fits into the young hungry and talented.

How bad is our scouting system?
It can’t be any coincidence that the only players we are linked with are average players that are either UK or Eire based.
WE simply have no european wide scout network of any worth which frankly in this day and age is both shocking and outrageous.
I can’t believe it hasn’t been addressed by either Moxey or Morgan.
You only have to look down the road to see what benefits you can get from a decent scouting network.

So if kites has a bad game he doesn’t have to worry about it, as he will be in the next games starting eleven! Talk about a slap in the face for the other players who get one or two starts, then get dropped or sold. Bet Hammill and Hunt really loved hearing that, and their moral will have dropped a few more notches, just when we need everyone being positive. MM you just don’t know how to keep stum do you? Whenever the press are about you just can’t resist the chance to come out with some quip or other without first thinking. You may come from Barnsley, but you’ve definately got Irish blood in you! We can forget about signing Gardner as well, we may afford the £6M or so it will take to sign him, but we won’t be anywhere near what he will demand in wages.

Oh, I forgot to comment on your other quote ““He came back from his loan at Watford and looked different from when he left”. Great quote from MM today ”all I can do is make them better ”
Is it only the fans who ask themselves WHY?
WHY are teams who have been promoted since us such as Albion, Newcastle, Swansea, Norwich, QPR so much better than us?
Why have Sunderland won seven out of their last nine games?
Why have QPR won two on the bounce?
Why do teams like Tottenham have the likes of Kevin Bond, Clive Allen and Joe Jordon sitting next to Rednapp advising him and we have TC?
WHY? WHY? WHY? is MM still Wolves manager after winning three games is 24?
Why have teams like Stoke become safe premier sides and we cannot?
Mr Morgan answers on a postcard please!

I’m no Mick fan – not by a long stretch of the imagination – but the articale says -
“What he needs now is seven, eight, nine, 10 games in the Premier League on the bounce,” said the boss.
WHAT HE NEEDS, not WHAT HE WILL GET. There comes a time when we have to be fair otherwise all we do is moan about Mick (as usual) and no one listens. Kites had a great first half on Saturday and a quiet second half. Why didn’t he change wings with Jarvis? Perhaps even go into the centre as comeone alluded to earlier. Well that’s down to tactics and we know who is (ir)responsible for them. This squad is, in my hiimble opinion, talented enough to stay in the division. I fear that the coaching staff are not so talented and that this season we will be punished for not recognising that Mick is out of his depth.
Listen Kightly is quality, he ripped the championship apart and no one really took notice of Jarvis did they. He has been injured for 2 years fair enough but now hes back just watch him go.
Hamill? well at first i was shouting for him to be in the team but his last few performances has made me understand MM reasons for not selecting as a first team player.
Great impact palyer for the last 20 mins but thats it.
Oh and for the record im no MM fan by any means and we should have sacked him months ago, but if we sack him now who comes in? we are best sticking with him and hopefully stay up and if thats before the end of the season then sack him when we are safe.
I still believe we will stay up but he has to go this season whether we stay up or go.
My only concern is we are sticking with MM after relegation because he has a great championship record o getting teams promoted, then will they sack him then? no course not. just rewind the last 5 seasons and press play!!

54 – Davey Dingle, I fear your last paragraph may prove to be horribly accurate. If so a complete decade will have provided two Championship promotions, two years of Championship failure, and two relegations from the Prem amidst 6 years of stressful Premiership existence, and let’s be honest that’s all it has been in the Prem, an existence!
Just as some fans hark back to Division 4 and all the desperation of those times, I can honestly say the prospect of five more years of MM, at the end of which we are back in the Championship, still playing kick and rush, is something I don’t wish to contemplate. Time is too precious for that!!
