Karl Henry apologises for his red card
Wednesday 25th January 2012, 11:00AM GMT.
Midfielder Karl Henry today said sorry to Wolves fans for his red card against Villa – admitting he made a ‘stupid’ mistake.
The former captain earned his marching orders for kicking out at winger Marc Albrighton in the 74th minute of the 3-2 defeat.
Henry’s subsequent three-match ban means he misses the games against Liverpool, QPR and Albion.
The score was 2-2 at the time and Wolves had to play for another 24 minutes with 10 men because of the eight minutes added on for Emmanuel Frimpong’s injury.
Henry apologised to the players in the dressing room afterwards and he has now gone public.
“I’ve apologised to the manager and the lads and would like to apologise to the fans because it was really poor,” he said.
“It was all from one stupid mistake which cost the team. I left us with 10 men, which saw them get the winner. So I cost us and I’m really disappointed.”
Henry felt Albrighton made the most of it but admitted to a bad error of judgement.
“I was trying to get the ball and he was holding my leg,” he said.
“I just kicked out in frustration to get away. As soon as I did it, I thought ‘what have I done?’ because you can’t react like that.
“Marc Albrighton made the most of it but it was a bad error of judgement. Ultimately it cost us.”
Henry’s third dismissal at Wolves means he is not available until a month today – the trip to Newcastle on February 25 – and admits it will be a long wait.
“It’s going to be a long month now for me,” he said.
“But I’m sure the boys will get us out of the relegation zone.
“On the plus side we’ve been playing well over the last six weeks.”
Manager Mick McCarthy has accepted Henry’s apology.
“He’s still one of us – I don’t know too many people who haven’t made mistakes in their life,” said the boss.
“He hasn’t made many in the last five-and-a-half years.
“He got a kick up the backside for doing it but he’s got my support for the next 13 games he’s available for.
“That’s the only way you can be.”
