McCarthy leads tributes to Wolves kit man Dave Plant
Friday 20th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today paid tribute to the club’s former kit man Dave Plant, who died this week aged 72.
The flags at Molineux were today flying at half mast in honour of Mr Plant.
Players are said to be “shocked” by the news of his death, with George Elokobi describing him as a “real gentleman”.
Mr Plant, who was assistant kit manager, retired from full-time duties at the club last year.
He started work at Wolves as a steward in 1994 before going on to become a stretcher bearer with the paramedic team on match days.
In 2005, he started work as a kitman, based largely at the club’s training ground in Compton, before retiring from the full-time position in May of last year. But he continued his match day role with the paramedics, and was most recently on duty at the home game with Chelsea on January 2.
Mr Plant died on Wednesday. His cause of death has yet to be established.
Mick McCarthy said today: “We would all like to pay our respects to Dave – a nicer man you couldn’t wish to meet. When I heard the news before the game with Birmingham it was a real body blow.
“He only retired last year and was so well-loved and respected by everyone.
“I would just like to send my sincere condolences to his wife Pat and family.”
The players are also said to be saddened by the news. Defender George Elokobi said on Twitter: “R.I.P Dave the kit man, a real gentleman. I will miss you and thanks for all you did at the club. Today is a sad day for me…..”.
Molineux groundsman Chris Lane also posted: “RIP Dave the old kit man – a true gent and one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. Sleep well friend.”
Fans are also posting scores tributes on Twitter and other internet forums.
Wolves fans were today calling for a minute’s silence in honour of Mr Plant at tomorrow’s match against Aston Villa.
One fan wrote: “RIP to a very loyal servant of the club. I’m sure Wolves will do him proud on Saturday.”

Sad, sad news.
David, worked with me at Wolves and I have to say it was a real pleasure to know the man.
He was, as George said, a gentleman.
Rest in peace and sincere condolences to his family.
You will be missed by everyone that knew you.
