Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy sick of ‘heroic failures’
Friday 20th January 2012, 2:42PM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today admitted he was “sick” of his side being heroic failures.
McCarthy’s side have lost only one of their last six Premier League games, but have drawn five of them to stay out of the drop zone by a point.
Tomorrow’s Molineux clash against Aston Villa gives Wolves the chance to correct their stuttering home form after going four games without a win in front of their own fans, culminating in Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Birmingham.
McCarthy said: “Let’s win the game. I am not accepting sub-standard performances – and Wednesday night was. Last Saturday against Tottenham we produced a terrific performance.
“Everyone wants to say Spurs put in 600 passes and we had 200 passes but we were ahead and we had chances to have extended our lead. But let’s win it. I am sick of heroic failures – we need to win.”
Wolves received a boost this afternoon when Dave Edwards joined their three other casualties in declaring themselves fit.
Edwards has shaken off discomfort from his groin complaint to join Kevin Foley, Roger Johnson and Matt Jarvis in coming through training unscathed today.
“All the lads who were carrying knocks have trained and are available,” said McCarthy.
* The referee for tomorrow’s match is now Michael Oliver from Ashington. He replaces Martin Atkinson.

If this is a statement then no //// sherlock.
There have been games that we have performed well and lost, but its the others where we seem to fail to reach even the basic levels of passing the ball to each other that gets me down.
Lets get at the Villa and hope for the 3 points

Mick
They aren’t HEROIC in any shape or form. They are just abject failures.
You aren’t accepting sub-standard performances? You are having a laugh? Did you not go to QPR, Swansea et al?
WE are sick of you!
“Failures ” yes , “Heroic” ha ha ha i nearly feel of my chair laughing.
I too are sick of heroic failures Mick, but the difference is I can do nothing about it.
Whereas, you could and should have bought better players, played them in their natural positions and employed the correct tactics……all at of which you have FAILED.
Yet again you bemoan and blame our position on anything but yourself. The bunch of honest lads that YOU have assembled and that YOU believe are good enough for a midtable finish demonstrates not just a major failing in your judgment……but a SACKABLE failing at that !!

MICK is sick?? How does he think WE all feel???

So are the supporters!
We will be lucky to get a point because we can’t score enough goals, we can’t rely on Steven Fletcher’s goals every time to keep us in the Premiership.
Can’t understand why this problem was not addressed in the summer.
Its the third consecutive season of struggling at the foot of the Premiership table and the new tactic seems to be trying to find scapegoats without coming out with any names for blame. Unfortunately MM is ultimately responsible for the squad and its performances and failure against Villa may prove to be one loss too many. The two senior executives Mr Moxey and Mr Morgan will almost certainly adopt an amazed that this has happened stance but they hold the purse strings and dictate the spend which means that they are to blame for a lack of investment in the team. Its not too late to bring a couple of quality players in and desperate times need desperate measures and time for the management to shape up.
Here we go again, now Mick is fed up of “heroic”losses. If the supporters air their veiws and in doing so are declared “numpties” then what`s Mick gonna call himself.I`ll tell you,an arrogant ,inept, tactically useless, etc, etc etc .Go NOW MICK,TAKE MOXEY AND CLIPBOARD WITH YOU, and maybe, just maybe,we will have a chance to finish in a reasonable position under a Manager who is competent to lead such a great club into better times.

Nothing, but nothing heroic about most of the failures this season. WWFC should not be underdogs after 3 years. Afraid this is more space-filling dross. I dread to think what he’ll say on Football Focus when he’s on with the loony Warnock.
What about the news that Adam Hammill may move to Wigan? That would be a good move for him but bad news for WWFC as at least he shows a bit of passion and desire. Yet another one who has been left behind at WWFC who will go on to good things elsewhere?
More shame and derision heaped on WWFC.

I’m not sure what is worse, a no show by our players on Wednesday or our official blogger who can’t be bothered to go to a home game! What’s all that about? Can he be dropped?
Anyway it’s still in our hands to claw our way up the table so UTW.

We all know what the problem is championship defence championship midfield QPR are doing what we should be doing strenthing their defence going down me thinks.

Come on you Wolves! Must win tomorrow.
The team has to be the same as against Tottenham. Please don’t play 4-4-2. We are missing O’Hara’s creativity but at least if Edwards plays, he will get forward and help out Fletcher.

well it will be a different team tomorrow.. Lets hope they give ot a go and put spme pressure on..we have to watch the pace of agonlahor.. Odds on keano notching a couple tomorro?? As for 4-4-2 personally i think its the natural formation for wolves and is the modern version of traditional wolves wing play..UNFORTUNATELY the players dont seem comfotable and effective at it on a consistent basis.. I think Micks plan was always to have jarvo n kights on the fllanks and then find the right striking partnership..that was scuppered when kights was injured ..prob thats why he brought in hunt n hamill.. But its never really worked and the 4-5-1 is only a stop gap.. Maybe we should go 3-5-2 and get some wing backs..at least we d see some more goals from one side or th other..ha ha..can roberto carlos still run?? Or maybe spurs would let us have bale on loan?? And my name s ronnie allen…

Why can’t we win sometimes, and go to a game where we can relax and enjoy?
Every game turns everyone into wretched nervous wrecks.
It’s not that most of the players don’t give 100 per cent, there’s just a lack of quality when and where it counts.
Everyone knew that the defence particularly lacked quality after last season, so why wasn’t the issue addressed?
Johnson? Ok, fine, good player, but placed amid error-prone defenders and I should think the guy has become a nervous wreck.
Either we haven’t spent enough to stay in the PL or we’ve spent money on players who aren’t good enough.
The fans deserve better than this.

I can’t see MM being sacked until it’s too late but as everyone says we don’t score enough goals so why oh why wont he give Vokes a few regular games with Fletcher just to see how good he can be. For me he’s far better than SEB and currently way better than Doyle.
I suspect MM will end up selling Hammill and Vokes and replace them with 2 more Scottish or Icelandic nobodies. Vokes MUST play against Villa.

In any other profession MM would have been dismissed by now. The home performances against QPR, most of the Newcastle match, Swansea and don’t forget, we should have been 0-2 against Wigan before we got lucky, plus the missed penalty by Sunderland, Stoke and Norwich were below standard. I don’t recall heroic failures, just poor starts, defending, tactics and substitutions.
I’m fed up with Mick’s excuses. An unlucky manager is losing manager. I love the honesty post interview but it is time for all to move on.

Lets forget about Brum? Im glad we are out means less games and more rest between PL games and less chance of Fletch getting injured!!
It’s gone a little quiet on the transfer news for us… Im starting to get antsy!!
Hope we win tomorrow! 2 – 0 I think. They will try hard to keep the clean sheet. The first team has been playing well latley same effort as Spurs game please.

My New Year’s Resolutions, by Mick McCarthy.
1. Consider not being delighted with dreadful performances / results.
2. Play people in their natural positions?
3. Training ground: revisit basics, eg passing, corners over first defender (not over everyone), retain possesion from throw in, etc.
4. Spend more than 5 mins per week on team selection / tactics (NB might make it easier on match days).
5. Stop abusing fans (unprofessional / counter productive).
6. Get over this Karl Henry thing.
7. Reign in wise cracking – people might be laughing AT me, not with me.
8. Tell players to stop kicking ball back to Wayno, straight from kick off, every single time. No other team does it – it’s rubbish.
9. Get rid of George Elokobi, bless him.
10. Ask Chairman for new luxury home near training ground?
If unable to do some / all of above, leave.
If only…

The only reason we stayed up last season is because doyle got injured. Fletcher was our top goal scorer an mick never played him. Doyles injury forced mick to play fletcher an his goals kept us up. FACT. That’s how good of a manager he is keepin your top goalscorer on the bench when we struggle for goals. Absolute muppet and a joke of a manager

More drivel from so called supporters/fans.
Stop repeating yourselves- Mick is right about under performing- how can the same players that beat Man Utd/City, Chelsea, Liverpool then play poorly against West Ham, Wigan etc last season. Ditto this season- Arsenal/Spurs= how frustrated do you think Mick is!!!
Look at Sunderland- O’Neil in- same players as Bruce- different results- players have to take some responsibility.

McCarthy, why are the players taking all the blame for your inabilities???
You were an average defender in your day and that is reflected in your tactics and your team selection.
Football moves on but you haven’t.
The way forwards is FORWARD.
Not pass back, back, back, then give it to the keeper to boot up field.
No other Premier team uses this tactic, but most do in the championship.
Your problem is you concentrate on not giving a goal away and once we do, then, game plan gone.
SO GO NOW PLEASE BEFORE YOU ARE PUSHED.

I do not know which I prefer.
Wolves to lose today and as a result McCarthy gets sacked
OR
Wolves to win and Morgan keeps him in as manager.
What is noticeable is the lack of action in the transfer market to date.
What I read into this is….. it all depends on today’s result.
If we win then Morgan will release funds.
If we lose or draw then McCarthy will be sacked and a new manager will be in place. If this is to happen it must be that Morgan has someone lined up and talks have taken place as transfer time is running out.
Pure conjecture I know but surely to goodness things have to happen and quick.
Then again I am as confused as most of us as to current events.
Just another ‘confused.com’

So tired of mm comments. If anyone has seen wolves play this season there has been very little heroics. Football has been garbage, players conyinually underperform, tactics are inept and motivation- what motivation?
All around us teams are strengthening, what are we doing, absolutely naff all except moaning how difficult transfer market is. Wake up wolves admit you dont want to play with the big boys and you are happy languishing in the second tier. Never felt less enthusiastic about the medium term future of the club. Yes budgets are important as well as financial stability but no ambition on or off the field makes for a very dull product

lets get one thing straight. mick did not keep us up last season, the fact that kevin doyle got injured at the end of the season kept us up. fletcher was our top goalscorer and mick insisted on keeping him on the bench until doyles injury forced him to start fletch with his goals keeping us up. FACT. thats just one example of him sticking with his favourites, only last season we were lucky!!!

‘Failures’ yes, ‘Heroic’ a big NO ! The big-gobbed idiot is spinning again; I notice he is putting the focus on the fans again, effectively saying, if the fans are unhappy and express their unhappiness ( as at the Swansea game), the subsequent poor display/loss/ draw will be solely their fault, ( nowt to do with me gov !),it’s classic MM; If by some miracle a win is achieved, it will by ‘Mick’s’ genius !!!!

Edwina,
I was correcting the writer of the article we are commenting on who writes:
“McCarthy’s side have lost only one of their last six Premier League games, but have drawn five of them to stay out of the drop zone by a point.”
