Mick McCarthy stands by Wolves’ FA Cup reshuffle
Thursday 19th January 2012, 11:00AM GMT.
Angry Mick McCarthy today refused to blame Wolves’ FA Cup exit on his 10 changes last night.
Three days before hosting Villa in the Premier League, McCarthy rested all but captain-for-the-night Christophe Berra for the third round replay against Championship side Birmingham at Molineux and lost 1-0.
Every outfield player had played in the Premier League this season – while home debutant Eggert Jonsson’s football had come in the Scottish top-flight – and there were six current internationals in the starting line-up.
McCarthy said: “I’m bitterly disappointed and livid.
“I know questions will be asked about the team and, if people want to point the finger at me, then so be it.
“But I thought that team should be good enough to win. Every one of them were Premier League players.
“If I’ve picked the wrong team, then maybe one of the players who came in should be telling me because they all want to play.”
McCarthy insisted he didn’t sacrifice the cup for Premier League survival.
He said: “The Premier League is paramount to the club and far more important. But that’s not the point – we wanted to win this game. I’m disappointed at losing a cup tie in which I wanted to progress.
“Winning games creates that winning mentality.”
McCarthy admitted the players who were selected are unlikely to have done themselves any favours.
He said: “I know they can all do it individually but maybe, collectively, they didn’t do it as well as they could have done.”
But McCarthy refused to write off his fringe players after one bad performance.
He said: “We’ve got 17 games left and there’s no point discounting anybody because they haven’t played as well as they can. But I expect a response to this and there will be changes on Saturday.”
McCarthy is hoping to have three of his casualties who missed last night back for Saturday’s visit of Villa.
He said: “I think I’ll have Roger Johnson, Kevin Foley and Matt Jarvis, but Dave Edwards is probably the bigger doubt of them all.”

Can’t wait to read all the idiotic replies to this report. Wake up and smell the coffee… what would you rather have… 3 points against the vile or a 4th round tie at Sheff Utd? The first team has been playing well with little reward and I expect another battling performance on saturday. We where woeful yesterday and alot of these so called fringe players need to take a look at themselves in the mirror. Bar Docherty and Hammill they where a disgrace. Keep the faith people and save your hatred and thick ‘sack mick’ comments till the end of the season. Wolves will beat the villa saturday beacause they want it more. If they dont then shoot me down!

BSD. No matter as PL status is vital.
I’d rather Wolves move on from this practise match and get 3 points against Villa which is now more vital than any Cup game this year.
So come on you Wolves – just a bad day in the office. Move on and win. the next one.
So if Wolves win come Saturday then Mad Mick was not so mad on Wednesday night but right on the night.

Totally woeful and hopeless performance , today I am embarrased to be a supporter, but I feel sorry for the die hards who as it happens voted with there feet by not even attending, the board must look at the apathy of the genuine supporters if they wish to sustain any long term ambitions.

Most of them are not fit to wear a Wolves shirt. How much longer do we have to suffer mediocrity. I have supported Wolves for 50 years even though I have not lived there for a long time. Come on Mr Morgan do something. Make me proud to be a supporter. I am so cheesed off with it.

It was absolute rubbish , there is a cigarette paper between our first 11 and the Championship let alone the second string. Need to start positive against Villa the first 10-15 mins will be critical , have to start winning at home or we are doomed , 2 wins in 19 suggests only one outcome….

I still can’t believe how poorly they played. It was like MM wanted us out of the cup,so he can concentrate on retianing Premiership status.

Mick needs to realise you have to earn the right to win games, you need to develop a cutting edge. Irrespective of which players he chooses – the tactics deployed are consistently the same – negative. Who is to blame for that MM or Connors we can just guess but this situation has been going on since Wolves drew at Villa at the beginning of the season and that is just this season – have the previous 2 seasons been any better. Ultimately though the buck must stop with Morgan and whether he thinks this is acceptable. I know what most Wolves fans think if they are being honest with themselves and that is most definitely no. Why can other teams coming up from the Championship deal with this league with far more comfort than Wolves have been able to – perhaps the quality of the manager!!
Yes our starting xi was stronger than theirs. Micks tactics were not stronger than chris houghton’s though. We have been awful in the prem (even worse than last season) and now we have been knocked out of the FA cup by a lower division side. When will Morgan realise this man is not what our club needs! Do the honourable thing and resign Mick!!!

I watched the game on TV and was so pleased i did not go to the game – it was dire….. the only creible performance in my opinion was the youngster De Vries – Doherty – Stearman – and Bera (even with that one schoolboy error that gifted Blues and great opportunity)the rest were woefully inadequate.
i think the coaching and tactics we are emplying are not getting the best out of the players – and some of them and below standard as well. BUT WE SHOULD be able to do a lot beter that we did in both games agains the Blues – it was worse than parks football.
Something as to change – it was a disgraceful performance

Brilliant Mick, you thought…………… and thought wrong.
As for your comment about maybe one of the players should tell you etc…………. You are the manager. You are the one who assess and picks the team. You say every one of those players is a Premier League player, why?? Cause you have played them in a Premier match before?? Is Elokobi a Premiership player?? If the answer is yes Mick then we are in bigger trouble than I thought.
Im more worried about your comments afterwards than losing last night. Lets face it, sending out 10 players who havnt really played much together was always going to produce an average performance.
Its your job Mick and we havnt won in 8 games after that dismal run earlier where we lost all those games in a row remember? Good enough?? Is that what we are supposed to feel?? Im doubting Morgan now too as his lack of action says a lot in fact.
And maybe a lot of people agree, never mind the fact it was on t.v, Wolves v Blues would have had more people turn up when we were in the championship than we did last night. Somethings lost.
The look on Robert Plants face last night says everything.

MM thought the players were good enougth to beat Birmingham last night…. Like he thought the players were good enough for a top half finish?! Says alot about MM! Yes they have played in the premier league, but does that make them preimer league standard? NO it doesn’t! We look uncomfortable on the ball. We can’t pass the ball at all, no creativity at all. We don’t know how to attack either. We have been linked again today to another bargain basement unknown from Scotland! Think I’m going to think for the worse now. We are going down like a lead balloon!
The three M’s are to blame
MM – taken us as far as he can
MM & JM – not having the backbone to make a change and letting MM buy players that havent been up to scratch! You get what you pay for!

Last night, quite clearly shows that we have not got the strength in depth. Players like Doyle are totally out of form and players like Elokobi are not really good enough. I assume that we are trying to offload Guedioura. Only Doherty and Hammill emerged with any credit. As a result we must strengthen in this transfer window.

Its all right saying 3 points against Villa is more important – but is it likely ??
If we had lost in the cup after a decent run of leasgue games you could see his argument – but we are woeful in the league and now out of the cup !!

Got no great problem with losing to Blues or being out of the FA Cup – these things happen.
I have got a problem with the fact that after 5 years in the job, with his choice of players and his choice of coaching staff that Mick can put a team on the pitch that look to be playing with fear, uncomfortable on the ball, scared to go forward, with no movement off the ball, unable to pass and resorting to the hoof time after time. Not to mention the utter futility of going 4-4-2 – Mick, it joust doesn’t work for us so why go back to it?
Let’s not kid ourselves, this might have been the worst performance of the season, but the first 11 don’t play very differently and aren’t much better this season. There is something wrong with the management and coaching that needs to be addressed. In terms of skill, confidence and tactics we are light years behind the likes of Norwich and Swansea despite the fact that we have been lucky enough to have far more money and time available to build a Premiership team.

Fair point Stout Wolf.
I booked a day off just to watch the babbies on tele I was all buzzing for it only managed to see the boys play away in london this season due to where now live.
I have never seen a dull underachieving display of any team no passion scared to make an attack it seemed we were the away team even when the blues had 9 men on the pitch we couldnt mount an attack too many loose balls going awol.
I think its unfair pointing 1 or 2 players out we need to point at all of them mostly mick im afraid morgan you need to act now if one of your manangers messed up for your building firm you would get rid for loosing you money same with mick hes loosing fans and our place in the league.
I know changes were made but 10 of em???
We need a stable team game in and out we aint playing championship manager 2012.
Stout wolf mentions pub team I played for 5 years in the wolvo sunday at Fowlers and Wednesfield parks and seen more passion there not scared to tackle or no playing into the net just having a crack then pass if it aint working….
I have thought of available managers-
Oleary
Warnock

Keegan
Benitez

We all know it was not good enough last night, even MM admits that.
Steve Morgan has already stated we are under acieving, so last night won’t help MM convince him otherwise.
We need another striker now and then need to move on these ‘back up’ reserves in the summer.
We failed to clear the dead wood last summer and now it’s just rotting in our backyard.
Why is SEB staill at the club? he will never make it in the Premiership.
We will stay up but to move forward change is needed,we are carrying to many average squad players.
I love MM for what he has done for the club but I suspect that ‘quality’ players won’t sign for Wolves with him in charge.

Now I’d say we have a better squad quality wise than Swansea but boy do I wish we employed the same tactics as them. That is where we fall short. Instead of building from the back we regularly bypass the midfield with long balls up to 5ft strikers which invariably ends up with us giving the ball away and coming under pressure. If the fans can see this then why not the manager? Since we got promoted (even though we have survived) the football has progressively been getting worse every season. If the product isn’t attractive then why would fans dream of paying top whack for tickets after a week of hard work? I’m not a fan of sacking managers but I just can’t see in which direction (apart from down) we are going. Surely the next stage is comfortable survival, and I’m not sure the current set-up can guarantee us this. Well played Doherty btw, after weeks of suffering stearman when foley/zubar were out why wasnt he playing? Just shows if given a chance the youth are eager to impress. UTW.
I did’nt think the team selected was wrong bearing in mind we have a Premiership game three days later. On the contrary I thought he may well have picked one two more youngsters.
Leaving aside Doherty, who I thought did little wrong, the rest of the outfield players did’nt seem that bothered. You would have thought that they would have been busting a gut to show they deserve to be first choice.
It’s too easy simply to blame the manager. That’s like blaming your own manager in your workplace for your own errors. Individual players must take responsibility for their own performances. And a lot of those performances last night were not excusable.

What a load of rubbish ,every game should be important, last night just shows how weak wolves are without serious competition for places. Also it’s a big ‘if’ we beat villa . there has been enough talk of what is lacking i.e. ideas, imagination, skill ,desire and heart. In my opinion chelsea’s decline started when Ray Wilkins left. He would do a great job for Wolves bye bye Mick.

Took this from the E & S article about Blues after last nights win…
“Elliott’s second-half effort settled what was, due to their Europa League commitments, the 36th game Blues have been involved in already this season. They will now visit Sheffield United in the fourth round and will play a minimum of 58 matches during the current campaign”.
So Blues beat us despite trying for promotion and playing 36 games already – this just makes any Mick excuse look pathetic.
A winner is a winner – and Mick aint a winner – he is a bag of excuses and sound bites.
Wish we had Houghton – he is a proper manager.

Perhaps we all will finaly realise that the players are really Championship grade .

most worrying aspect for me is the total lack of confidence in key players like Doyle and Blakes, what on earth is going between matches, cleary the backroom arent working close enough with individuals. The sorry state is that many of these players are “shot to pieces”,this must come back to tatics and team formation. There appears to be a major requirement of a real MAN MANAGER who can lift and mentally stimulate this group of players.

What an absolute load of rubbish last night’s performance was . We cannot string 5 passes together and retain possession , we usually give it back to the goalkeeper for an aimless punt upfield to yet again concede possession and we have nobody running into space looking for the ball . There was no rythm , no energy no movement and having watched Swansea last weekend no clue . Swansea have 7 players in their team that played with them in league 1 while , with the exception of Doherty , MM brought every player to the club presumably to play in a formation ands to a style that would hopefully win games . Unfortunately , we play with no style , no recognisable formation and we cannot win games . What a wonderful premier league manager and coach we have . Fingers and everything else crossed for saturday because any more performances like this will surely see us heading back to the championship .

If the Management have one brain between them at board leval, they will dispatch Moxey to london immediately with a lucrative offer for Neil Warnock, the recently departed QPR Manager, to take the helm at Wolves.
Neil Warnock is no ‘blushing violet’ and like McCarthy speaks his mind at the drop of a hat, but, the one big difference is Warnock has a good football brain and is one of the very few available to get Wolves out of this shocking mess.

Talking of stupid, replay the goal from last night & just watch Hunt! he is standing on the line at post with his hands in air shouting offside when Elliot tapped in, I just had to laugh, these players are paid upwards of 25/30k a week and dont know the basics!!

Sorry I don’t buy these excuses.
We have not built on the good work acheived on Saturday, against Spurs, probably the best team in the country at the moment, we caused them a few problems, why couldn’t we do the same to a very poor blues team, why not play a similar team, in a similar format???
All we do when we play 4 4 2 is lamp the ball forward & expect the forwards to make something happen.
No pattern of play what so ever, yet the club try to insult our intelligence by by telling us its not as bad as we think, rubbish!!!
Blues had the extra man in midfield & it told, as blues dominated posession away against a team a league above them!!!!
That performance last night is ‘in keeping’ with the way we have been playing for the last few months which has been woeful, keep coming with the excuses but the results tell the real story, which is there for all to see……..
2 wins in 21 games.

“everyone of them were premier league players”This comment demonstrates what is wrong with the people running our club.IE they think the players are better than they actually are. I am sorry Mick ,but just because they represented the club in the premiership doesnt mean they are good enough to play at that level. Hunt,Elokobi,Stearman,Milijas,Hammill,Ebanks Blake are just not good enough.Correct me if I am wrong but 8 of the players who started against Spurs were playing for us in the championship and it is clear we have made hardly any progress in the last three seasons.
Who is to blame for this complacency? I dont know ,but it is clear we need a couple of quality players before 31st January. In view of what Morgan has said recently I wouldnt bet on it.

I can’t beleive MM has scoured the transfer market for a new holding midfielder and managed to waste £600k on E Johnson. He is even worse than Henry – unbeleivable!!! And as for Hunt, Milias and Doyle – they were playing for their places in the first team – they should all be on the transfer list today.
I wanted a decent cup run to take my mind of our dire league situation. I am embarrassed to be a Wolves fan today and I’m livid – this club is going down and Morgan needs to wake up. And this perfomance proves we have absolutely no cutting edge without Jarvis and Fletcher. There’s only one answer to me and I think it’s too late to find a replacement to keep this lot up. Villa fan here. I was with my Bluenose wife at Molinuex last night and I agree with MM about the number of changes made. There were 5 internationals in the starting line up plus fringe players. MM would and should have expected more and better from them to show him they deserve a run in the first team. They complain in the press when they don’t get a game, but when they do, they don’t show up! To me, Blues players wanted that result more last night than their Wolves counterparts.
What did impress me last night though was Blues ability on the ball. Not since their 1970′s heydays have I seen Blues players look so comfortable when in possesion. When Blues had the ball, they didn’t look like losing it. When Wolves had it, it was like a hot potato. And that has to be put down to Chris Hughton and his coaching staff. More telling though is, it also says a lot about MM and his coaching staff!!!

In training does mick train any confidence into the players? Or does he train it out of them? Frightened to make mistakes, the players have now got that seed planted inside their heads from McCarthy and his side-kick Connor ie clipboard! We used to play with a bit of guile and mix it up if we had to-where,s that gone Mick? Back to the wall football in th last 3years not good enough!! McCarthy has already exceeded the limits of his talents as a manager. We can expect nothing but more of the same till relegation. Terry Connor has been in his job for too long as well. Someone mentioned Ray Wilkins, and I agree that Chelsea have never been as good since his departure. Bring in Ray with his knowledge and connections and a hungry young manager with motivational skills to work alongside him in partnership. Someone like Wrexham FC’s manager.

No1 – First team playing well? We battled well at Arsenal and Spurs but the hoof it downfield and chase after it football is not playing well.
No2 – Just a bad day at the office – how many bad days are we to endure?
No 34 – It is easy to blame the manager. Yes it is when there is no pattern to our play, no movement off the ball and no creativity. Players of course make individual errors and that is not the fault of the manager, but then if they are simply not good enough who brought them to the club?
No 14 – You are so right – Swansea play good creative football with a much smaller budget than ours.
Whether we play a first 11 or second 11 the same pattern of play should prevail. Unfortunately at present that means the slow predictable balls followed by the keeper or defender hoofing the ball forward.
We cannot look at results in isolation whether good or bad but we have to see progress in the way we play and we are going backwards at the moment.
Still hoping we beat Villa on Saturday.

But do you know what? I felt nothing. Not angry, frustrated, not even surprised anymore.
There is simply nothing there anymore. If Morgan persists in tolerating this bunch of tripe and this useless excuse of a manager then the club can do without my loyalty, interest, passion, money and everything else.

i agree..it was a poor performance after one or two bright moments..but even they took time to materialise..blues started sharply and more incisively..however i agree that the players have to take responsibility..we constantly gave the ball away when under only medium pressure and failed to offer options for passes..no one came short for passes …and no one took the game by the scruff of the neck or drove the team on..we could have done with roy keane on the pitch not in the tv studio…we re lacking a real leader of the mike bailey or kenny hibbitt type who can urge the team on even when their own game is not on song…some of the younger talented players like hammill and the more experienced like doyle and seb would benefit and improve their own game if we had a couple of players to really drive the team with fire and urgency.. Hunt puts in a lot of work but has been somewhat unfocussed of late..im sure thats why fergie has brought scholesy back..tho he s a quieter player he still pushes them on..

I am sure every Wolves fan will be more than disappointed with the effort given by individual players last night. Birmingham passed the ball to their own players whereas Wolves either passed it to a B’Ham player or it hit one and they took possession. Only Doherty and Ebanks Blake (who worked the channels) are worth a mention. Elokobi’s passing was awful, I have seen better on a Sunday morning game. Hammill needs to realise that there are 9 other outfield players as he tried too often to try and beat more than one and ended up losing it. The goal was yet again a result of awful marking. How come he was in front of all the Wolves players, on the ground and yet scored?
I do not blame MM one bit, there were international players on the pitch and they failed him.

Number 27- bang on analysis of our situation. We are not getting any real results playing the way we do and, in the process, we provide a really dull approach to playing this great sport. All you MM fans out there- ask yourself how is it that little old Swansea can play the quality entertaining football that they do coming straight out of the Championship and get results? Answer – having a Manager who has a vision of how he wants to play and then putting the pieces together to make it happen.
ps chris hughton hit the nail on the head when he said he sent his team out to enjoy the match..yes he got the tacticcs n energy right too…but wolves dont enjoy their football much..that is the key…too much fear and tension..little flow or rhythm..and drive which peters out after the first twenty minutes..its harder to speed up than slow down as they say…

The game was poor, Wolves reserves v Blues reserves and the game represented that fact.
However i do think Mick was right to rest his key players. If you beat Villa Saturday all will be forgotten but lose and i can see breaking point re his tenure.
Having seen Villa this season i am predicting a draw, maybe even 0-0.

What can I say about your comment only that it is 100% accurate.
I actually think there were quite a few players last night that didnt seem to have a clue how to pass the ball to a gold and black shirt which given their experience really shocked me.
But we have to move on to the next game. All tickets purchased to a Wolves game should carry a Government Health Warning LOL
Report abuse
Blessing in disguise. Clearly shows the need for an end of season clear out should we stay up. Elokobi , Stearman , Hunt , Ebanks-Blake and sadly Milijas all have to be moved on . I’d also add Jonsson to the list , no idea why MM bought a player with nothing to add to the squad. Scouring Hearts fans message boards nobody was bothered he’d gone , obvious why. What happened to the philosophy of only buying players better than the ones you already have ?

In the long run, I know that getting knocked out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round will not be the most important fact of our season; but my feelings as a long suffering supporter ARE important. And last night, I was EMBARRASSED at how poor Wolves were almost to a man, and were certainly woefully inadequate as a team.
They are Mick’s players, every last one of them, and he and his staff coach them, are meant to inspire them to go out there and perform. So, who will take the blame?
Do you think MM would be interested in signing me…I’m fit and can run around alot and even more importantly I am absolutely useless at football!

Watched the game and surprised at the below par performance,as an avid fan I feel nick has misunderstood the concept of competition for places for never arriving at knowing who are his best eleven.i firmly beleive we need to give Adlene Geudioura a real run in our team and not the last 20 mins of games,he looked like the only player who wanted to go forward and pass, hammil needs to only look up and the pass as opposed to think he is maradona.hope mick can see we wolves fans just need our team to want it,and not perform like last night.;)leave adlene in the team and play him frimpong.

MORGAN & MOXEY – YOU JUST CARRY ON AS USUAL BACKING MM ALL THE WAY TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP!
Yes the reserves were woeful but 3pts on Sat more important. I’m more worried about the lack of signings. looks like Onouha is QPR bound for much less that the £4mill original price. We really need to find a creative midfielder and a right back because we are not creating anything for Fletch or Sylvan. Forget about sack Mick cos it ain’t going to happen we need to try and get to the end of the season in 17th or better then start the einquiry into a new boss.
What’s more concerning is that although MM tried to build up Doyle in the E&S before the game, the player (our centre forward) did not have a shot on goal against a Championship club!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The most striking thing to come out of the game for me was the superb cameo performance of Adlene Guedioura. How much we needed the sort of skill and commitment he showed! But he seems to have fallen out of favour after one or two moderate games. I really hope he will not be sold as I truly believe he has class. Does anyone know, is he going to the African Cup ?
If Edwards is unfit, I would think seriously about playing him v Villa. He has so much more to offer than Milijas.
I despair when I saw the team he had picked I was glad I decided not to go. We are the worst team in the Premier League.
We are the only team who don’t appear to be able to score goals from open play. All our goals come from free kicks or mistakes by the opposition.
All other teams pass the ball to each other and then score because they can play football and have ability!!!, Our players are so lacking because MM has bought some rubbish they can only pass the ball sideways and backwards and then give it the big boot. That is our type of football thanks to MM.
Mr MORGAN you are not a Wolves supporter but you must know that MM and his team are a disgrace.
If you don’t get rid, look at the stadium last night because he will take us down and the supporters will not go and watch more rubbish.
We have a wonderful set of supporter who follow the Wolves through thick and thin but MM is killing the golden goose. HE HAS TO GO.

Less concerned with the team selection than MM continually reverting to his old fashioned brand of 4-4-2 (4-2-4 ?) which hasn’t really worked since we got promoted – take a look at how Swansea and Norwich are playing.

Where do you begin when it comes to this bunch of losers, yes I’m afraid thats exactly what they were last night! My MotM was Doherty, our young right back, which says it all really! Apart from him and Fletcher (as a late sub) the rest were woeful and thats putting it kindly. A premiership club! Don’t make me laugh, most of those on show certainly wouldn’t get into Birmingham’s first team thats for sure. Elokobi looked like he was on another planet at times, completely unaware of what was going on around him. Hunt ran around like a headless chicken, and as for the person who everyone it seems wanted to be in the team, Hammill, well he continually ran into cul de sacs of 2,3 or 4 Birmingham players and lost possesion. I thought someone had told Doyle that there wasn’t such a thing as a Goal that Birmingham were defending because he went nowhere near it, he was doing his typical thing of backing into their defenders and trying to lay the ball off, even when he managed to do it, he just stood there as if to admire his own work instead of getting into position to get it back and shoot. SEB tried, but is to me, looking increasingly overweight. It wasn’t until Fletcher came on that their keeper had a save of any consequence to make, in fact he could quite easily have just stood there, and read the express and star for the majority of the game. In short a third rate display by to many third rate players, its the young kids who went to the game and were served up this dross that I feel sorry for. We had better get 3 points Saturday, or MM will have to go, and the players might be all pally pally in the dressing room, but on the pitch they are beginning to look like complete strangers to one another.

The manager’s trouble is that, he is always right. Can you ever remember him making a mistake?
He has had five or so years to slowly build a team. All you have is a team which will empty the stadium in five minutes.

Any ideas for who will replace mick? If we lose to the vile he will be sacked in my opinion. Morgan in the last week as come out of the woodwork saying that the teams results are unacceptable, we lose to a pathetic birmingham side with 10k gate while missing an opportunity to reach the fifth rd of fa cup and now he has postponed the second phase of redevelopment. Could he have someone lined up and give him the cash to strengthen. while we have missed out on o`neil, big sam and mark hughes. How about steve bruce or roy keane? personally I would pull out all the stops and go for brendon rodgers. Big club with small mentality needs to change im afraid.

Ken your argument holds no water…………
If the players are Championship grade and the manager comes out with phrases such as “im happy with the squad I have” like he did in the summer, then it is his fault we have lesser players on the field each week. He is deluded.
He has just stated after last night, “they are all Premiership players”, so thats your argument completely flawed………….

Embarrassed to be a fan last night. The only positive was bully taking the mick out of Adrian Chiles. Simply it was not good enough…we have no idea how to create chances. If we go down this season, and I think we will, how can we hold onto Fletcher, Jarvis & Hennessey. Last night certain “established” players were non existent….
Elokobi – embarassing
Jonsson – didn’t know he was there till he went off
Hunt – what do I say. Second to every ball, bottling challenges..lightweight
Doyle – shocking – no confidence
Milijas – no work ethic
It was a shambles. Mick! Wake up and smell the coffee. You and clipboard are out of your depth now. I am forver indebted to you for getting us to and keeping us in the premier league but we cannot put up with this drivel. 2 wins in 20. Steve – act now and at least we have a chance!

Has anyone seen that QPR has almost signed Ohouna from Man City! He was supposed to be one of our targets! Again we have missed out due to a tightarsed owner who feebly bleets
‘we work through our problems’. The problem is you and your useless manager who couldn’t manage water!
According to the rumours we are intersted in a bloke from St Mirren!!!!!!! 34yr old Davies from Bolton and a 33yr old french man from West ham who can’t get a game!!!!! It beggars belief what goes on inside the heads of these people who manage and own this club.
It’s like Mr Tumble meets Frank Spencer!
They talk the talk but don’t walk the walk!!
I’m sending Mcarthy a large pointy hat with a very large ‘L’ on the front. Hope he wears it for the vile match!

Enough said about last night. Wolves cup record under Mccarthy has been dreadful and this was just the latest episode ! Just pray that we get 3 points Saturday or we are doomed. What an embarressement last night was.
Stephen Hunt was dreadful, infact I dont think I have seen a good game from him.
No fire power upfront, no creativity in midefield, and a defence that is woeful at best. Berra is strong but at this level you need to play with both feet!
You have to feel sorry for Mick as the players last night really let him down. They should be doing a loy better for him! For once I can’t blame poor tactics, THE PLAYERS WERE JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

To make matters worse, in the ITV build up they showed clips of late 50′s when 600000 were rocking at Molineux watching friendles etc, and also clips of our F.A. Cup win in 1960 against Blackburn…….then we watched this awful game. I seem to remember a live televised game against Crystal Palace a few years ago, another awful game with Mick in charge (Mujangi Bia played). Perhaps we should get Roy Keane in as assistant manager and sit back and let Roy dislodge stubborn Mick.
More seriously, just call Ray Wilkins

Facts are that performance was shocking. Our poor football is reducing Molineux to library like status and it hurts to say it but we do not pass or move the ball with any confidence at all. Went to see a proper good cup tie at Wrexham last night against Brighton. Wrexham for much of the match totally outplayed their Championship rivals and were very unlucky to have gone out on penalties.
My analogy is, Wrexham came out of the match with their heads held high, and with the respect of opposing players and manager. They will hopefully take this into their next matches and get back into the football league. Wolves, on the other hand, came out with another defeat, and at best indifference from most people (except those who think McCarthy is a managerial god)and probably another dent in confidence. Unfortunatley, defeat is now leading to defeat and it is reaching the point that a draw is seen as a victory.
GET RID OF THIS CLOWN NOW AND BRING IN A MANAGER WHO WILL INSTILL SOME ORGANISATION, FAIRNESS, PASSION, PRIDE, SKILL AND ENTERTAINMENT THAT THE CLUB SO DEPERATELY NEEDS BUT THE PEOPLE RUNNING THE CLUB SEEM TO PRETEND ISN’T NEEDED.

For all of those blaming the players rather than the manager, isn’t your own jopb easier when the boss has laid some ground rles and set the course.
There is no method to this madness that the players are involved in. We have several very good wingers,so we don’t play them and when we do they are required to play in defense, more than pose a threat to the oppoistion. Whe Fletchers not paling we have no aerila threat which means that most of the wingers crosses are easily handled by the defense. Ebanks Blake is not going to win many headers in the penalty area, and to me seems not very interested in what’s going on.
As I now livve in the States I can only watch the games on Fox, and the most telling comment on the night was the commentator saying, “McCarthy has recognised that Murphy, (The brummie full back) is posing a threat down the left and has told Doyle to prevent his running forward and Ebanks Blake was just over there watching him too.” Says it all for me.
Doyle is a shadow of himself, looks exhausted and has really worked his behind off for the past three year.
None onf the players other than Hammill and Berra, looked particularly good last night, but it’s tough to play on adrenalin every week. There needs to be some plan as to how to beat the opposition not just to stop the other team from beating us.
As fgor replacing McCarthy, Morgan pretty much ruled that out last week, and idf it means just recycling the same old rubbish then forget it anyway. We should have grbbed Martin o’Neill, as many of the contributoprs to this site said early in the season. I don’t think Hughes will make much difference at QPR, he couldn’t do it with Millions at Man City. At this point I think our only hope is that the three teams currently at the bottom continue to be as bad as us, or worse, but if the team is led by someone who doesn’t seem to know how to win I think we may be doomed. After the surge of hope at Tottenham we are all back in the deepest depression rather than build on that up beat we threw away a chance to boost ourselve again. * straight losses followed by another 8 without a win. You don’t have to be genius to figure out we are in trouble, and yes I did want to see a decent cup run, winjnng is a habit that we don’t have and a win last night would have boosted us all.
Are we mathematically out of the running for winning the Premiership yet. iF we are we already jknow we won’t win anything this season. :-(

Should really have been Mick’s last game in charge. Dead man walking these days and I reckon he knows it too. Sad to say the club seem content to purchase and retain players below the standard required for the top flight of football. It’s painful to admit, but really we’re a Championship club who have been fortunate to spend three years in the Premiership. Until expectations at all levels of the club change, that will continue to be the case.

Why did we enter the FACup.
We should have written to the FA and said that we can not enter because we are concentrating on coming fourth from bottom in the league.

I’ve always criticised the small faction of fans who insult McCarthy on here, but last night’s match was an embarrassment.
McCarthy should have viewed the match as an opportunity to integrate, perhaps 5 players, to the existing 1st XI and play to win, and win well with a performance to match.
It was clear that by making wholesome changes that he was did not want to progress in the FA cup. Yes, rest a few key players, but not the entire team.
A wasted opportunity to actually build some much needed confidence and win a match (much overdue).
I do think McCarthy is to blame for this loss, and to the people who say “I’d rather have lost this and take 3 points against Villa” are devoid of any common sense and logic. Now we go into the Villa game on the back of a loss. Not on the back of a win and some good draws behind that.
I think Morgan will sack McCarthy (and the coaching staff) at the end of May, regardless of whether we stay up. I think the club needs fresh direction on the pitch. We are stagnating and losing sight of what the fans want, which is performance and results. See Swansea and Norwich for details.

I fear my 60+ years of supporting Wolves are coming to an end.
I can no longer watch this club heading back to the lower divisions.
Forget new stands restaurants megastores and lets have a team on the pitch that is capable of representing our great historical club.
This manager is not a Prem standard manager – good lower division but not Premiershiup and we will never reach the heights with him in charge,
Sadly the hierachy of our club seem content to continue feeding us this banal fare.
Why are we a still turning up though last nights embarressing attendance should flash lights in the Directors Board Room – it wasnt all due to live tv.
Looking at the terraces last night I was embarressed that our club should appear to the country on live television with such low support.
This manager is lower division standard but we will never have a place in the top division whilst his tactics and thinking rule our every move on the pitch.
Quite simply he is past sell by date and at heart he must realise that.
I fear that vitriolic support is next on the list and would hope that the Board take some action before attendance figures match the numbers of players on the pitch.
Nero Rome and Fire come to mind.

well well is this the only site that agree’s that MM has to go and go now. Saturday should be his last ame win loose or draw. Thanks Mick but enough is enough and all you session ticket holders should voice your anger after the match on Saturday. The majority of that taem last night will find it hard to get a place in the Championship and the bench with Keogh on it was a joke he couldnt hold down a place at Leeds for gods sake. Big George passed to everyone but a Gold shirt, Hunt looked like a head less Chicken, The new guy from Hearts was absent for most of the game shall I go on ?? And MM says they are premiership players give it a rest you muppet. And now I see us linked with a St Mirren player WTF.

Let’s get last night’s game out of our head’s and concentrate on the Villa game which is going to be ultimately more important than the Blues shamble. Half of them last night looked like dead men walking and realize that their time is up at this club.
No point in getting rid of MM at this point as the new guy will need time to assess the squad and won’t have any time to bring in what he thinks can keep us in the Prem.
I still think that we will be okay despite our obvious problem’s in certain position’s.
Come on Wolves fans. Back the lad’s to get us through to another season in the Premiership and worry about a manager in the summer.

40 years a fan and the best part of 20 years a season ticket holder. I have never been moved to make a comment like this before but last night’s defeat against Birningham was a bridge to far! I have been fortunate enough to have watched Wolves win at Wembley twice and secure promotion at the Millennium Stadium.
Realistically my only chance of another big day out is in the cup competitions and surprise, surprise another season has slipped past. In one of his post match interviews, MM correctly stated the blindingly obvious that winning breeds a winning mentality but picked a team that predictably and embarassingly exited the FA Cup without so much as a whimper and on prime time terrestrial TV for all to see!
There was nowhere to hide for Wolves fans today!
I accept that Premier League survival is the key but at least give it a go! The only player to come out of yesterday’s debacle with any real credit was Karl Henry. Surely even his biggest critics must see what we lack when he does not play. He may not be the best but he never hides!

Ah
so it is all about the stadium redevelopment then.
Relegation being a serious threat now, an oh we wont be getting so much money in from tv/premier league, better stop and concentrate on the playing side, and oh our manager isnt doing great, and oh the window is shut, oh the stand wont get built anyway.
Please tell me if this is not as you see it going?

Two poor sides, but of the two Birmingham looked the more skilful and composed and made the better chances.
Wolves were clueless, and it was difficult to imagine anyone mounting a case in favour of fielding the starting eleven; it is a fact that they all have Prem experience (or similar) but also a fact none would be sure of getting a game in any other Prem side. Most certainly would not!
A bad, demoralising mistake, and the finances of the club, due to an unnecessary early exit from a major competition, are yet further damaged. No doubt that will simply delay building programmes and ensure we can’t buy better players … but I doubt very much if such a policy is sustainable.
MM, thick skinned as ever, just shrugs it off, he is sure of his job and can do as he pleases. Steve Morgan says problems are to be worked through …. well MM is the biggest problem and work on it should commence immediately!

Mick will only be vindicated if we beat AV, even though I personally think that isn’t enough. We should set out to win all games regardless of who plays. The whole squad is poorly managed and if that idiot owner doesn’t do something soon then our club will be relegated.
I call him an idiot because I have no idea why we have spent £18 million on a stand to increase the capacity by a little over 2000. Do the math, even if it is a sell out each game it will take 10 plus years to pay back. What’s the point until we’ve an established mid table squad. We are far from that.
So we refuse to pay to get decent players and pay the going rate on wages. I’m not talking about silly (it’s all too high)wages in PL terms, just the market rate.
Well, Mr Morgan, watch the attendance fall and we’ll see how many times we get a full house. I didn’t renew my season ticket because the football is rubbish, the on field tactics and ambition dreadful. How many of our players would find themselves in other PL teams? Hennessey, Fletcher, Jarvis?????
Fed up with the team selection, tactics, excuses and poor leadership at board level. There are not 3 worse teams this year.

They might have all played in the premiership but as a team they don’t go together and that is why you lost and you were always going to lose.
Elokobi might have been OK last season but he is terrible this season. On top of that he’s rubbish at going forward and helping on the wings unlike Ward which is why Doyle spent so much time having to chip in himself.
This was pretty much the same on the other side too meaning we are left with just SEB in the box getting no service.
Playing Hammill with Doyle and SEB is Pointless because neither can get on the end of the crosses he puts in. Also Hammill seems to be best on the Right and Hunts best position is on the left. I can understand switching when Jarvis plays but Hammill and Hunt just let them get on in their best positions.
Doyle isn’t scoring because he is a striker who likes to score from open play taking on defenders one on one. Like Long and Keane. He’s not as aggressive as SEB and as tall as Fletch in the box and usually has 2-3 players marking him. Yet our slow build ups on attacking and lack of counter attack mean Doyle rarely gets any opportunity to even consider showing us what he can do. By the time we get into the box there’s usually 8 or 9 defenders back.
These are all simple things that every one can see. Either Mick hasn’t in which case serious questions need to be answered or he just chose to pick this team anyway so his 1st choicers didn’t get injured. I think its the latter which means he’s lying to the fans and that annoys me more than anything.

McCarthy is a lost man, devoid of ideas and modern day coaching know how and an expert at taking the passion out of his playerrs for a derby game. Im so looking forward though to seeing a great redeveloped ground in the Championship.

Very poor performance with nothing to admire. The whole nation now thinks we are rubbish after being shown on prime time TV.The simple fact with WW this year is that so many players are under-performing. This raises so many questions about the ability and mindset of the squad. I can’t see us getting much more than 37 points now (when we should be heading for 50).If so it is more last day drama. It might be time to review which personell are good enough and who needs to move on. We desparately need some quality and creativity. We must become a better home team

It is NOT about Mick McCarthy. It is about the players. They let him and us down. Mick protects them, they should do far , far better> You could see on TV Mick was livid and frustrated. He clearly had a go at them at half time. Come on lads, you are PROFESSIONAL footballers. Put it right against the Villa!

“McCARTHY Bought,’coached’ and ‘motivated’ players fail yet again”, so who do you blame?

d) Michael Joseph McCarthy

Firstly, I don’t want Mick to go but he needs to start to learn from his mistakes. Lets ask the question. If you were Steve Morgan who would be your choice to take over? I would like a young up and coming Manager who likes to play in the right way but has the ability to change us to a stubborn, hard to beat side away from home to the top sides, my choices would be:
1. Paul Lambert (Norwich)
2. Chris Hughton (Blues)
3. Brendan Rodgers (Swansea)
4. Ian Holloway (Blackpool)
5. Karl Robinson (MK Dons)
I think what is obvious is that Terry Connor is the guy that needs to go. Our style hasn’t changed a great deal since he has been there and although Mick chooses the tactics alot of this is down to how the players are coached.

Has anyone considered reflecting on the players performance instead of MM’s?
They should all have been up for it and Doherty (and Berra) aside, not one of them really gave the sort of showing that would put them back in the first team picture.
As a result, the team for Vile will now pick itself. More fool those who started against Blues for not doing more to impress.

Grace 139.
I pointed that out about 1984 relegation but the E & S did not or would not print it. see comment 100. Would you believe that Q.P.R cane up as Champions that previous season and played us off the park winning 4-1.
That was the year we had spent £2million pounds on the John Ireland stand, but bought no players and down we went season after season to the 4th Division. We only started a comeback after they signed a young chap named BULL from Tesco United.
Looks familiar doesn’t it.

Mick don’t get upset if you want to win something then you play the best of what you have in the squad remember only 11 play on the night.
The point is you don’t have what you think you have, obviously.
The team you did play was not a team to win with because you rested what you considered to be better players for the game on Saturday, so in fact you did not really put out a team to win the game you only though you did.
We didn’t
Most of us are one step in front of you so we considered that you would not play your best team so we stayed at home hence the empty seats, the people that did go are normally new faces at the club, new supports if you like.
So 1 out of 10 for encouraging new support following that poor display of entertainment I just feel sorry for them that they had to pay to watch a game that was no more than amateur dramatics.
The FA Cup is on par with the FA a complete flop.
Next year just pull out at the start and cut the Crap!!!

I have just come to the conclusion that the shuffle McCarthy talks about is the Soft Shoe Shuffle. He has been selected for the next Strictly Come Dancing later this year!!!!!!
