Wolves to reward Christophe Berra with new deal

Christophe Berra is set to become the latest Wolves player to be rewarded with a new deal.

The 26-year-old defender, who is set to make his 100th Wolves league appearance at Tottenham tomorrow, has 18 months left on his contract.

Berra has been one of Wolves’ most consistent players this season and has been linked with Newcastle, Bolton and Blackburn.

But chairman Steve Morgan has promised the Scotland international, who cost £2.3m from Hearts in February 2009, a new contract to follow Irish trio Kevin Doyle, Stephen Ward and Matt Doherty, who signed long-term deals before Christmas.

“Christophe’s a good player and there are a number of players who are at a similar stage of their contracts, which we’re reviewing,” said Morgan.

“We will be offering the vast majority of those players something, and Christophe, of course, is an excellent player. He’s becoming Mr Consistency.”

Berra is joined by Ronald Zubar, George Elokobi, Michael Kightly, Nenad Milijas, Adlene Guedioura, Stephen Hunt and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake on the list of players out of contract in June 2013.

Jody Craddock, Andy Keogh and young professionals Aaron McCarey, Jamie Reckord, Ashley Hemmings and Ethan Ebanks-Landell see their deals expire this summer.

Berra said talks have not started yet but believes he is working as hard as he can.

“If I keep on playing well and improving week-in, week-out, season on season, that’s all I can do because I know I’ve done the right things,” he said.

“But we haven’t really spoken about it and I haven’t really thought about it.”

Can’t argue with the statement that Berra is consistant – I just wish he was any good !

I hope so. I know some people don’t like him but he was just what we needed in the championship when we starting leaking goals after Mancienne went back helping us reach the promised land. He has formed a strong partnership with Craddock in our first 2 season and this season he looks a better player than Johnson at the moment. Would be a disaster if we were to lose him and Craddock at the same time.

I’m not sure he cuts it at this level, really no better than the rest. We should look to sell him and get a quality centre half, the standard of Zak Knight or Jonny Evans.

Fair play to Berra, he has been good this season. A couple of mistakes yes but not glaring ones.

He is a bit ‘grabby’ in the box though which is worrying on occasion! Wouldn’t be suprised to see him penalised for this at some point

Berra has certainly played a lot better this season but the photograph above highlights his major problem – grappling and holding of opponents in and around the penalty area!

    Ooooh look!
A very rare picture of Berra grappling somebody(!)
How on earth did you manage to get that?

Cracking photo but typical of Berra trying to take an opponents shirt off because he has let him get past him.

Good, he’s come on leaps & bounds this season. He’s right to be called ‘Mr Consistent’, although I would like him to chip in with more goals.
He’s a rare breed who is comfortable as the left-sided center half & it’s a position where he’ll only get better with age over the next 4-6 years. Good move, Wolves.

Absolutely vital Berra stays with us, he’s premier league quality. For me, player of the season thus far with Fletcher not far behind.

Its clear from Morgans standpoint he is happy with a team and manager doing a poor job.

I hope he has a different philosophy over the new stan cullis otherwise it will be leaking water and falling down soon due to poor workmanship – the builders put in a good shift but weren’t upto the task at the end of the day and allowed water to leak in!

I haven’t seen a single goal against us this season that you could attribute to a Berra mistake. That has been Johnson’s domain.

I like Berra ,he grafts, fights for the cause, puts his body on the line, wins lots and lots of headers and never dodges a tackle.Jo Lescott he ain’t,more a Paul Butler, but he has done well for us.Other Premier sides have noticed how well he has performed this season.Makes a lot of sense to give him a new contract. And all Premier League defenders hang on to opponents at corner kicks,it is how it is at present.

And I was going to say something else about Berra;he is a lot quicker than some people give him credit for. When he gets moving not that many out pace him.

Berra has been pretty consistent and has on countless amount of times bailed out Johnson.

Agreewith Bullseye No 9. neck and neck with Fletcher for Player of the season…
He’s leaner, faster and looking the part. Take note Johnson….

Not a bad season by his low standards but look where we are in the table. But then again i suppose for a team who’s happy to play hoofball Berra is your man as he is probably the worst footballer in the league

I was not a fan as for me he is too slow on the turn. However he has been much improved this season and contributes to the solid left side of our defence which some on here seem to be determined to ignore.

Christophe has definitely looked a much improved player this year. I only get to watch on TV, but I swear he looks quite a bit faster this year. Maybe he just looks fast next to Johnson, but last year I thought he looked sooooo slow, I have been pleasantly surprised

    19) A bit unfair on Johnson? Stearman and the midfield have been at fault for a fair few. Look at Man Utd the first two goals I would blame midfielders like Henry!
    Zat Knight is awful!

Berra has been one of the better players this season. He continually covers for others and wins most of the high balls coming in. He is very quick and deserving of a new contract.

Hmmmm…. Berra genuine Premiership quality? Never. Could McCarthy attract a superior replacement? Definitely not, unless a team with a half decent British or Irish centre half get relegated, which is why we shop in that basket. Nobody who already plays for a PL team wants to go to Wolves, at least not with Mick in charge.

I look at the Spurs staff; Sherwood, Allen, Jordan, and pasty-face himself among others and I think there’s a solid coaching team who spread the workload out evenly. 6 first-team coaches who all specialise in different areas. Then I look at Mick and Terry and it’s too much like Steptoe and Son in comparison.

Keith Curle is available, best defensive coach in the Championship last season and nurtered a more watertight defence at QPR in this one than Mick…. I don’t care how bad McCarthy is, he can’t be any worse to work for than Colin Wan…

After his performance against Tottenham, where he, yet again, was dragged all over the place? Of course he will get a new contract, it will be counted as ‘investment’ in the squad ! As I hinted, life in a home fans’ box for us supporters of WWFC is mightily tough; At all but two away games in these boxes as reciprocal ‘entertainment’, my beloved Wolves have yet again been dubbed ‘the worst side to visit this season’; Never mind, at least McCarthy is hanging onto his job by his last nostril hair!

Possibly our Player of the Season for his consistency. We should cherish him more and take him to our hearts. He gives his all for the team
