Wolves 1 Chelsea 2

Monday 2nd January 2012, 4:57PM GMT.

Roger Johnson

Wolves were again nursing a sense of injustice against London opposition for the second time in a week after this defeat to Chelsea.

After Nenad Milijas’ harsh red card at Arsenal, Frank Lampard scored an 88th-minute winner after only being booked for a far worse tackle on Adam Hammill in the 25th minute, which threatened to see referee Peter Walton lose control.

Stephen Ward cancelled out Ramires’ 54th-minute opener but Chelsea were too strong for Wolves, who will be rueing the inconsistency of the officials in the space of seven days.

Mick McCarthy’s side were always up against it with a Chelsea side still stinging from their shock home defeat to Villa two days earlier.

McCarthy made five changes to the team that drew 1-1 at Bolton on New Year’s Eve as the manager switched to a 4-4-1-1 formation.

There were recalls for Adam Hammill, Anthony Forde, Dave Edwards and Kevin Doyle, while Emmanuel Frimpong made his debut after signing on loan from Arsenal as McCarthy utilised his squad to keep his players as fresh as possible with this being their third game in seven days.

And Wolves had the first chance of the game as a mix-up in the Chelsea defence presented Edwards with a shooting opportunity after just 19 seconds.

But the Wales international could only force a tame effort which was easy for keeper Petr Cech.

Chelsea controlled the opening 20 minutes, forcing several chances, before the game almost boiled over in an incident-packed first half.

A mix-up between Roger Johnson and Christophe Berra which saw both defenders go for, and miss, the same ball saw Fernando Torres thread through Juan Mata and the midfielder beat keeper Wayne Hennessey with an angled shot, but it appeared to be heading wide before Richard Stearman retrieved possession near the line.

Stearman enjoyed a solid first half and did brilliantly to put off Frank Lampard as he shaped to shoot with only Hennessey to beat when the England midfielder beat Berra.

Ramires was next to try his luck, taking on Berra an Stephen Ward in a surging run before finishing with a rising, angled shot that flashed into the side-netting.

But it was a late, lunging tackle by Lampard on Adam Hammill in the 25th minute that sparked an ugly spell of the game that saw five bookings in eight minutes and referee Peter Walton struggle to keep control.

Lampard was booked for his challenge, but he was quickly followed into Walton’s notebook by Hammill, Doyle, Karl Henry and Ramires.

Wolves can rightly feel aggrieved at Lampard only receiving as yellow card after seeing Nenad Milijas punished with a red card at Arsenal seven days ago for a fair challenge nowhere containing none of the malice of the Chelsea midfielder’s.

Hammill and Doyle’s yellow cards were for retaliation, Hammill’s for a needless and weak but late challenge on Ashley Cole, whose own heavy buffeting of Doyle saw the Ireland international throw the ball at him.

They came in between a yellow card for Henry for clipping the heels of Torres, who went sprawling from the slightest contact to win a free kick.

But the mayhem sparked the partisan Molineux crowd and their team into their best period of the game.

They forced two chances via superb free kicks from Hammill.

First, the much-improved Johnson forced Cech to tip onto the post with a fierce header in the 31st minute.

Then Ward headed wide from an unmarked position when he should really have hit the target.

But Wolves had to remain alert at the back and Jose Bosingwa had Hennessey at full stretch to tip his shot around the post after Hammill was guilty of getting caught in possession.

McCarthy’s side saved their best passing move until the last seconds of the first half when Hammill’s superb turn and pass released Doyle but the striker could only fire weakly wide of Cech’s near post.

Wolves introduced Jarvis at the break and started the second half briskly.

Hammill was the central man, seeing a first-time shot blocked by John Terry with the crowd howling for handball in the melee caused by Jarvis’ superb run and left-foot cross.

Then the former Liverpool reserve curled inches over from 20 yards.

But a goal from Chelsea in the 54th minute took the wind out of Wolves’ sails.

Mata’s corner was glanced on by Terry and Ramires held off Ward then turned him before toe-poking into the top corner of the net.

Despite the arrival of eight-goal top scorer Steven Fletcher in the 68th minute, little more was seen of Wolves as an attacking force until their equaliser, although Edwards should have done better than to head straight at Cech from Karl Henry’s chip.

Instead Wolves were forced to defend, with Stearman producing a vital tackle on Torres as the Spaniard threatened to walk the ball in.

Stearman was again the man in Chelsea’s way as he deflected away Mata’s drive.

Despite their five changes and three substitutions, Wolves seemed to have run out of steam and ideas.

But they somehow forced an equaliser five minutes from time when Ward lashed home first time for his third goal of the season after Fletcher’s attempted volley from Jarvis’ chip squirted invitingly across the area into his path.

But Wolves couldn’t build on their goal and instead it was Chelsea who restored their lead through Lampard when he swept home Cole’s cross to end the home side’s three-match unbeaten run.

Wolves went desperately close to a second equaliser with the last touch of the game but Berra’s header was tipped over by Cech.

Disappointed today with refereeing. As usual they seem to dislike wolves, Chelsea should have been down to 9 men with lampard and cole producing ridiculous tackles that if were done by wolves would have been straight reds.
The ref also did not seem to follow the rules, as after scoring their first goal 8 chelsea players went off the field of play without permission and so their should have been 8 yellow cards. i wonder if the ref would of followed the rules if it were wolves offending? Probably!

I read the comments on the team news and they all said it; where’s the fire power. Why are we signing players on three year contracts when it’s been said, the club will only bring in players if it improves the squad….not for them to be picked. All I know is, if we go down, we’ve got the manager to get us out, but at this level, what is it that the club are praying for. MM is such an honest open man and goddamn likeable, but alas, the points are not coming, does it not say it all, excuses aside, something isn’t good enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right, so that’s 2 points from 9 in home games against a dissapointing stoke, the ‘should always beat promoted team’ norwich and the there for the taking chelsea. As well as drawing against the worst team at home bolton. terrible results that could cost us. Rubbish performance, stood in awe of chelsea for the most part, made Torres look good, ref was a joke but no excuses at all. Good save by cech at the end though, will give him and lampard (who shouldn’t have been on the pitch: two yellows for a poor tackle then a dive) their dues. Frimpong’s debut was underwhelming and inaffective.

I normally think Peter Walton is a decent ref, but if he had a free view of Lampard’s challenge on Hammill, he should certainly have sent him off. Against 10 men for 70+ minutes, Wolves would most likely have taken something from this match. We badly need some luck and wins now before too long.

Wolves played you off the park but we made elementary mistakes.

    Lampard should have been off!
Good decisions by McCarthy on player choice and subs.
We deserved 1 point at least.
We had players who had time and composure on the ball.

Nice smile you got there Hammill! Did MM ask you to see what happens if you fouled Cole? Of course not you just tackled hard!! Nice one.

Inconsistency of refs and FA have let Wolves down NOT the players.

Was Cole offside before his cross? I think so
Well done AND happy New Year to MM and Wolves. We are safe!

The referee situation seems to be getting worse by the day!!! The referee failed to get a grip of the game from the first few minutes and there is no question that Lampard should have been sent off after that foul on Hammill.

Having said all that started poorly yet again and we looked like we would get overrun but largely due to Stearman we stayed in the game. The goal by Ramires was down to shambolic defending after we had looked to be in the ascendancy. The equalizing goal was well taken by Ward after excellent work by Fletcher to win the ball.

I know everyone goes on about tiredness but I am sorry for me Fletcher should have started. This was a home game and we have to start winning these matches no matter who we are playing. That means playing your best players and Fletcher is unquestionably our best player. The starting lineup showed way too many changes and we looked like strangers out there at times.

Luckily for us QPR and Blackburn lost but we have to got be more of a goalscoring threat if we have any pretensions of staying in the Premiership.

Quite simple – Lampard should not have been on the pitch! 3 match ban for Milijas? Should be 5 at least for Lampard and that tackle

Ashley Cole kicked Doyle in the chest, kicked out at him when he was on the ground, Doyle gets annoyed. Doyle gets booked and nothing for Cole!!!!!!

Somebody somewhere has to sort this refereeing inconsistency out.

Wolves should be proud of the way they played today. We’ll get there.

    Best Wishes

Bitterly disappointed. What an opportunity to get a point – or three – out of Chelsea again! On the downside, there was a severe lack of creativity up front and in midfield for a large part of the game, gave the ball away too often, and some of the defending was on the wrong side of amateurish. On the upside – not quite sure at this moment. And what the xxx does an opposition player (e.g. Lampard, Song) have to do to get sent off?! Murder a Wolves player on the field? One thing is dead certain: The officials are not doing us any favours. Anyway, UTW!

2 games running we have thrown away what could so easily have been 2 victories, so what it was Chelsea and ‘look how many millions they have spent’, they were a team there for the taking but up until the point where Fat Frank should have been sent off (how was that challenge not as bad as Milijas’?) we didn’t show a thing going forward..

Stearman should never play for us again, he’s bad enough anyway but to give the ball away like he did for their first goal is not even excusable in the Sunday League.

We can’t keep a clean sheet to save our life and how many times do we have to go a goal down in games and hope to recover? Well our luck ran out today.

I thank MM for what he has done up to now but the time is right for him to move on, and fast before it’s too late.

It’s making me sick to see what MoN is doing at Sunderland in such a short space of time, maybe he wouldn’t have come to Wolves but I’d bet my house we didn’t even look into it. Much like the team, the people at the top are spineless and seem to be just standing by and watching us die a slow death.

Our only hope is that there might be three teams worse than us. I have high hopes for 2012, sadly none of them where Wolves are concerned.

    Time for change.

Can’t have any complaints about todays result. Let’s be honest and face it, they were better. No two ways about it. Dreadful defending for the goals conceded. I take my hat off to Steven Ward for all his effort and endeavour but he was at fault for the first goal and for the second week running he blew the opportunity to score with his head. Two headers both missed in identical fashion. Full of fight and effort as I say but not good enough to be a telling difference. Like Doyle, Stearman, Berra, need I go on, whole team really except the usual trio of Hennessey, 1/2 a Fletch and Jarvo. Frimpong showed how to make intelligent and telling passes. Hope he can dislodge Henry. Ha….Ha Ha….Ha Ha Ha. Great line up from MM again. No comprendes? Eh Micko? Point winning games running out, where are they coming from? Anybody know?

Strange team choice again today but that said you cannot play the team and the officials how Cole stayed out the book for 2 obvious yellows in a few mins is beyond me and Lampards challenge was 10 times worse than Milias’s against the Arse. So no surprise those 2 combined for their winner. Another clear indication that the top teams get the big decisions. Chelsea will not make the top 4 in my opinion as they got out of jail today and celebrated like they had won the league not beat a bottom 5 team.

How was it a surprising team? We were bound to play 451 in this one and needed some fresh midfielders. The organisation and defending was excellent for most of the game and it was only when we had to chase it and go 442 we looked vulnerable.

New Year, same mistakes by the Manager.

Against Bolton, the strikers had no support, so:

let’s change the team, let’s drop the strikers who had no service, let’s play Forde, Let’s play Hammill on the LW, Let’s play Frimpong but not tell him what he is supposed to be doing, his distribution mirrors the other players, let’s play Edwards, Let’s play Doyle, Let’s not give the home fans our best team Let’s not have a clue what we are doing.

I am all for giving young players an opportunity, but against Chelsea.

About sums up McCarthy today, we had a wonderful opportunity today against Chelsea, but he made a complete mess of it.

He was nearly saved by appalling mistakes by the Ref, but in the second half he managed to make it worse, realising his mistake with Frimpong, and Forde, let’s bring Fletcher on, of course he is partly injured, let’s bring Foley on (our best RB) but play him in midfield let’s leave our other Goal Scorer on the bench, as we may get a Point.

If he wants to play Doyle play him behind the two strikers.

Ward scored a good goal, but was found wanting defensively too often today.

One bright thing for him today was his favourite (Henry) played well second half and did what he was supposed to be doing.

To all the McCarthy believers, your belief is misplaced,we will never get out of this mess until the board has some bottle and sacks him.

We will be relegated with him in charge.

We are not scoring goals, when will the Penny drop? Unfortunately don’t think it will.

All i’ve got to say is O’NEILL O’NEILL O’NEILL. Why oh why didn’t we appoint him? Just the clever charismatic manager our club craves who could fulfill our undoubted potential. McCarthy is the biggest underachiever in the Premier League. Can’t defend, can’t keep a clean sheet, no craft, guile or cunning in midfield, every 4 out of 5 signings he makes are poor. Constantly blaming bad luck & poor refereeing decisions for an endless stream of bad results. Well i don’t hear Swansea or Norwich moaning as they quietly go about the business of gathering points! And they get the same refs. And they were both in the 3rd Division a couple of years ago! McCarthy has reached his Graham Turner moment… Right bloke at the time but a new owner & a new stadium bring a massive exiting new challenge and the club has now moved on and passed him by. A shame but thats life. After 3yrs McCarthy’s record this season is a disgrace given the funds & facilities at his disposal. As well as Norwich & Swansea we have the likes of Stoke & others out performing us every year. Clubs with no history of ever winning anything! When Morgan was enjoying Liverpool’s success as a lad does does he believe they would have achieved what they did without appointing the charismatic Bill Shankly? Then Mr. Morgan when will you go out and source our ‘Shankly’ who will fulfill our potential & fill your new stadium? Instead of this lumbering 2nd Division dinosaur who has always struggled at this level & is being outperformed by managers with less recources. I ask another question Sir. Would he have been good enough for your beloved Liverpool back then? No didn’t think so. So when will you bring in your own man? Think about it. Its your money. I dont want a manager giving film shows to the press because he can’t win a game. It might be amusing for them but i’m not laughing. Pathetic! Pathetic! Pathetic! I would love to see what the right man could do with our club. Oh and 1 more question. If he went tomorrow do you think any other Premier club would want him? No neither do i.

The shape of the team was good today and we rarely looked in trouble defensively. Good solid games again from Henry and Berra and Johnson played well also. Frimpong showed some nice touches but will take time to settle in. I cannot beleive that people like Dion Dublin and other pundits suggest that “It was the correct decision to keep Lampard on”!!!
These so called pundits get replays of an incident 12 times yet still conclude by telling “LIES”!
Yet the very pundits have a go at a referee for getting it wrong when he as no replays!
It was a decision that in most circles would question the integrity of this referee and make you wonder had he bet on “CHELSEA” winning? Make no mistake this was 100% sending off offence.
Has for MICKO and his croonies (NUMPTIES) they need to “GO”!.
Doyle as lone striker? Says it all really!Doyle as been “PANTS” all season just does not look like scoring, his shooting as less power than my 3 year old!!
He brings nothing to the table and restricts the team to aiming for his pigeon chest!
We only create chances when we are behind,I lost count of how many times we gave possesion away, simple 8-9 yards passes were going astray, stray pass was the reason we conceded the 1st goal!
PING-PONG is a good player but “MICKO” is not the man to manage him,as “MICKO” restricts players in their beleif takes away their confidence, instead he puts fear in them,Hamill in the 1st game or two tried to take players on,Micko kept him out of the side and now HAMILL is making no attempt to use his natural game “up and at em”!
Brendan Rogers as got “SWANSEA” to keep more clean sheets in half a season than MICK as managed in 3.5 seasons!!!
Norwich and Swansea play football they pass pass pass and they are doing very well.
Both of these managers would keep “WOLVES” up and make them into a team that atleast create chances and look a danager to the opposition!

Watched Sky sports today and it was mentioned that Frederic Piquionne wasn’t in the starting line up or even on the bench for West Hamm tonight. Then saw in the latest transfer rumours that Wolves are interested in him!!He’s 33 years old for Gods sake, have we no ambition other then to just get some reinforcements on the cheap! Had it been Thierry Henry then fair enough, but Frederic Piquionne, do me a favour.
As for the match well I just can’t be bothered to repeat myself all over again. The one thing I will say though is, surely there must be some way to express our dissatisfaction at the standard of Refereeing to the F.A. We always seem to come off second best when major decisions are made, there has got to be some sort of complaints procedure we can use.

First time poster but i feel its time for a few home truths. im a 31 year season ticket holder love me club to bits but losing todays game won’t relegate us, what will relegate us is of our 10 home games left we have 4 top 6 clubs and 2 midland derbys in that 10 games. to all the blind in mick we trust disciples, please enlighten me where the points are comimg from to help us stay up. In the 3 years in this league ive never called for him to go but frankly we look a relagation team and more concerning is the lack of a pattern of play its bits and pieces football at best and the lack of fluidity and movement with the ball is alarming. if mick wishes to continue here i feel he must make changes to his coaching staff as they have turned doyle into a heskey and the players are technically poor on the ball, berra has time to bring the ball down but heads it back, ward plays a long ball down the channel to often and edwards, hunt and poor championship players at best. its not for me to decide micks future but for those who think he is the best man to bring you back up in the event of relagation i would say this… mr morgan bought the club in the championship he has since given mick nearly 45 million pounds and knocked half the ground down do you think he will be happy to be back where he started you. for me its thanks mick for your best but you have run out of ideas !!Taxi

Why did he need to make 5 changes??? To rest players is a joke when we have a meaningless fA Cup game next week where results mean nothing to our survival and the “tired players” could be rested then?
Forde may have promise be both he and Edwards were passengers today and too lightweight!!
Stearman – Farm him out NOW!! 10 pasess and no progress then stearman gives it away under no prseeure – result their first goal!!
Only a matter odf time now before we go into the bottom 3 then there we will remain.

    Which is the most expensive?

Why of late do my opening sentences, always begin about ‘the Referee’ whilst i dont want to bring myself into ‘disrepute’ with the Refs, you have to say alot of their decisions are dreadful, and are very costly to ‘smaller-clubs’ like Wolves. Milijas gets a Red card, yet Lampard gets a Yellow card, why do so-called ‘big clubs’ always get away with it? Every team in the BPL are scrapping to stay in this league, because its the best, and richest to be in, so all the clubs deserve referee’s to ‘fair and unbiased’ But having said that, were do we go from here,we’ve had another poor run of results 3pts from 15pts is very poor, yes we’ve had a three game unbeaten run, but we need wins, especially at home, yet i cant honestly see were the next win is coming from looking at the fixtures coming up? Look at Sunderland since they’ve changed manager 3 wins out of the last 5 games, with the same players SB had at his disposal. Sometimes a change is wot is needed,to turn a club’s fortunes around.UTW:

Check the Prem table for the same stage last season – we’re doing alright on and off the pitch. That was a good team display today with plenty more to come – Foley is coming back from injury, Frimpong needs time to settle in, Henry had a solid game again, Fletcher is a genuine threat, Hammill is starting to fulfill his potential, Jarvis/Berra/Johnson/Ward/Hennessy all played well. O’Hara’s recuperating and there was a better bench today than I’ve seen in ages – we are improving incrementally. For the first time I think other Prem teams will worry about playing Wolves, home or away. Out of Darkness….

Why did Mick drop Jarvis, Fletcher and Hunt??

Total madness, to drop your best players against a stumbling Chelsea and play rookie Forde (who looked out of his depth) and ‘No goals again’ Doyle, just isn’t good enough.

On WM Mick said he dropped them to rest them ‘flogging a tired horse’ was his cocky northern answer when pressed by the intereviewer.

If he needed to rest them could he of not waited until the Blues game??

You don’t deserve to win if you haven’t got any common sense.Very disappointed with Micks decisions today.

    Dear Mr McCarthy

Please can you let me know how a manager who has such a consistantly poor record is still in a position of employment?

You came to Wolverhampton Wanderers and re established the club in the top flight of English football, thankyou.
You had very little to work with, in fact you only had a sqaud of 15, including some youth players.
In your first season you included wolves young academy players, who played with passion and pride as they knew what wolverhampton wanderers was all about.
Those very players dragged us all by the edge of our seats to the play offs, surpasing all of our expectation as we expected the worst.

You added player after player over the coming seasons, and finally developed a championship promotion team, which included players from other clubs that had been relegated with teams that you had previously managed and not been abled to maintain their EPL survuval.

Then you spent millions, in fact on your 3 seasons of EPL football you have spent the 6th highest nett amount of any club in the EPL.

You promised progression, and yes we are very happy to have maintained our EPL status BUT where is our progression?

This season you have told us to expect a top half finish as Roger Johnson was the last piece of the jigsaw and that the permanent signing of Ohara was crucial and would give us the platform to move on.

As I sit here now looking at recent results.

    1. What is your best team?
    2. Why can’t you identify a decent centre half? What position did you ply your trade in?
    3. Why do you select certain players so out of form that our team performances suffer..ie Doyle, Johnson, Berra, Elokobi, Hunt, Henry, Ohara, Ward – They are your “favourites”
    4. Why do you pick your favourites?
    5. Why do you put square pegs in round holes?
    6. Why are you so tactically naive?
    7. Why do you berate genuine fans who are so perpleaxed by your random unjustified decisions regarding our club?
    8. Why do you not like “flair” or creative players.

These are just a few questions I have at the moment….I have given up on attending molineux anymore, whilst you are still manager.

Yes you think….another numpty driven away by you, our manager

The problem you have that the minority numpty support is becoming the majority….because game after game you are ruining this once great club.

I sat in a freezing cold north bank today and said to myself, WHY? im a home & away season ticket holder and have been for years but under this managment the club can forget my money next year! The entertainment vslue is virtually zero! the type of footballl we are playing under MM is laughable, its old hat & basic and we cant even get that right!

His type of football bores me!

The astmosphere at the molineux is as bad as i can remember, theres no excitment, every game is soooo boring, negative dont concede attitude in every game no matter who the opponents!

Its no shock swansea & norwich are doing so well as they play it on the deck and are positive with the ball, at times we look like we have never seen a ball never mind put a move together!

I was more than happy to scrap for survival for a couple of seasons but i see no progress this time around, no real quality is being brought in, that egg from hearts is so good he doesnt even make bench! another cheap squad player that will have little or no impact, and how many of them have we had??

Its now 11 points from possible 54 (18 games) after our 2 win start!
and countless “must win” games have “not” been won!

Guts me to be so negative but matches have become tedious & boring and to think most of us work nearly a whole day to afford to go!!

Poor ref decisions but lets look at what we can affect.

    Poor team selection.

Why rest our best two outfield players for a game we could have won? Jarvis and Fletch can have nearly two weeks off after today. How can we hope to win without Fletch? He is our only serious goal threat! Mad Mick suggested in interview after the game ‘Doyle isn’t a bad replacement is he?’ Well Yes Mad Mick Doyle is a bad replacemnet, he DOESN’T score! Our Left Back has more goals than Doyle (although he is really a centre forward?!?)!

Great to see Youngsters coming through, but to start Forde today proved to be the wrong decision, again today was a game we could have won. Why throw is away Mad Mick?

Overall games against Chelsea aren’t one’s you’d usually expect to win, but last season we did and this was one of the results that kept us up. If we can’t beat Norwich, Swansea, QPR, Bolton, WBA, Villa, Newcastle, Everton, Stoke where are the wins going to come from?

Anyway, looking forward to seeing where Frimpong will play next? Will it be right back, left back, centre forward or even in goal. How pleased Arsenal will be when he returns, they lent us a decent midfielder and Mad Mick will turn him into a dodgy ‘utility’ player!

BUT – there HAS to be an improvement in the second half of the season, because a lot of our points have come against weak opposition at home and we’ve now got to play them away..

Not normally a Stearman fan but he did prevent Torres from scoring. (How much did they pay for him again?) Poor defending which lead to their 2nd goal though but we were unlucky right at the end.

Yet more huge injustice with both Cole and Lampard getting away with murder. Is this a ‘fixed’ league, ffs? I’m seriously beginning to wonder after the scandals we’ve witnessed this season. That said, let’s not kid ourselves. Chelsea never got out of second gear yet still controlled most of the game, leaving us chasing shadows. If either team looked likely to grab the three points, it was them. So, no complaints from me even if Lampard’s winner felt like a huge kick in the family jewels. Mind you, both goals were the result of poor defending, so what’s new? The customary 2 goals conceded yet again.

I’m delighted Wardy scored a beauty, though surely Fletch should’ve started? And how does Mick expect to get positive results when we can’t field anything like a settled team? Five changes says it all.

After our awful results so far, it’s time to pray that the Norwich and Swansea start flopping in the second half of the season. I wouldn’t bet on it, though.

WE ARE SO BAD ITS UNBELIEVABLE.

So once again the refs are doing what the FA and all the sky people want helping the big boys.

Im fed up with it something has to be done.
All you here on sky, is about the big boys the FA want the chealsea,s arsenals ect at the top because in looks good across the world.

That said we are rubbish cant defend cant pass. and i here it said that fring pong had a bad game !! thats probably because he,s used to having players moving forward making space ? it will take him a few game to slow down.

Where was our new bought and paid for sighning ? out on loan ?

mm im so fed up with your constant negative tactics. Edwards was not fit enough to play on sat untill second half but was fit enough to play a full game today 2 day,s later.

MM you said you felt sorry 4 elakobi because you thought he was one of the better players in the first half against bolton but had to put ward back in is spot, so where was elakobi today ? and befor any1 starts having ago at me. I for 1 dont think he,s good enough for the prem, But our weekest player is henry he does nothing for the team, slows every thing down he dont get forward he dosent shoot he dont track back ie today he let lampard run by into the box,

OVER ALL WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH, THE MANAGER BOUGHT THE PLAYERS IN SO ITS HIS FAULT. IF WE BY A STROKE OF LUCK STAY UP ARE WE REALY GOING TO BE ANY BETTER NEXT SEASON !! I DONT THINK SO.

Not a bad performance in parts, but not good. There is a real lack of creativity and whenever we break from defense the players seem to stop and hesitate, look sideways and/or backwards for the next pass. This breaks the attack down rapidly and allows defenders to position up. I thought Atwell was bad, but the first half performance of this referee was quite simply the worst ever. Agreed that Lampard should not have been on the pitch and as for Cole, after kicking Doyle (no atempt to play the ball), he appeared to try and stamp on Doyle (but missed) so followed up with a sly kick at him and connected. Doyle then gets booked for throwing the ball at Cole – unbelievable! Yes, Stearman did some saving things, but he is not a full back. Mick – please play Foley in his correct position from next week and leave him there. Hammill got a start – must have bought MM a nice pressie over Christmas. Finally, what a team selection? Before you clappers start saying it was tactical genius and it NEARLY worked. It was actually stupid and tactically inept. But then again what else can we expect week in week out.

    Thought Wolves were pretty unlucky.

    Lampard should have been red-carded.
Time after time we see the big clubs get favourable treatment from referees.

Frimpong was not bad, although I didn’t like the way he rolled around theatrically when fouled early on (clearly well-versed in the Arsenal way of doing things). Pleased at least that the ref told him to get up and get on with it.

Fully agree with post no.18 (DXB Wolf)that if ever there was a time to have a real crack at Chelsea, this was it. Assuming that Fletcher was somewhere near full fitness after his knock in the previous game, he should have started.

Surely if MM wants to rest and refresh certain players, next week’s FA Cup 3rd Round would have been a perfect opportunity, rather than a vital game in the Prem!!

Well done to Adam Hammill- impresses me every time I watch him (two superb free-kicks). Surely it is time to give him a regular start as our wide man on the right.

I only saw the highlights on MOTD but once Lampard stayed on, the ref had lost it. He also should have sent off Cole. Watching the game against Bolton and the excellent performance of Mark Davies I wonder why we allowed him to go so cheaply and wished that we still had him. I also noticed what a good player Charlie Mulgrew is at Celtic and wonder why he was ignored by MM when he was at Wolves. Perhaps we have a problem recognising talent. Remember we were on an unbeaten run! yes all draws but still unbeaten and we lost it to Chelsea! who I think were solid at the back.

The fans were brilliant on Chelseas and the refs back all through the game! atmosphere was good! If only Berra’s last header went in. We deserved a point and should have got it! but the luck always falls on the big teams.

I thought Fletch had a knock which is why he was left out? and came on as an impact sub. I thought Hammil should have replaced Hunt a while ago and now he had his chance. Foley is coming back into the team. So I don’t have a problem with the team selection. good for Forde to have a run out again! Whats your problem?

What was the referee thinking ?
Didn’t have any problem with Mick’s team selections and use of his squad, except for bringing on Foley. He was clearly short of match practice and Stephen Hunt was probably the best option. He may even have picked up Lampard as he laid the ball off to Cole and headed for the penalty area.

Like a few of those above I truly despair at the lack of understanding of some posters. Just a few examples:

Why change the system to 451? Well we were playing Chelsea, we pretty much always play 451 against the top sides, we played it at Arsenal and did well. I know you all think Chelsea are suddenly a bad side but they are still 4th today.

Does he know his best team? Well do you think its 1970? Who plays the same team every week? Find a team for me that has played 4 games in 10 days and used the same starting line up.

Why did he rest Fletcher and Jarvis? They weren’t rested, they were knackered, Jarvis obviously had no more than 45 mins in his legs and it was judged he could do more damage coming on. Fletcher played 20 mins at Bolton where he was really struggling I doubt if we wanted to use him at all really.

99 – Exile – I was particularly impressed with the entertainment offered by Blackpool last season. 10 men bombing forward and leaving the back door wide open lead to relegation and now they are outside the Champ play-off zone. If that’s what you want then good luck – still a bit of personal abuse is always a good substitute for a logical argument.

Firstly, the Ref should have sent Lampard off for that wild tackle which could have broke Hammill’s leg and his dive after was also ignored? Ashley Cole had 3 yellow card challenges ignored and kicked out at Doyle, he then booked Doyle for throwing the ball at him?! It also wasn’t a corner for their first goal and offside for their second.

I couldn’t understand why he started Forde instead of Jarvis with a Cup game next week? I thought Hammill was excellent but without Milijas (Sent off but Lampard wasn’t?) and O’Hara we lacked creativity. With Foley coming back I am certainly happier as I feel he is massively underrated. Zubar was just finding form too. Mick has earned the right to see this job out but he needs to get results soon with candidates such as Bruce and Hughes out of work and would surely be interested?

On another note, did anyone notice how many of our Academy graduates are playing in the Prem now? Lescott (Man City), Forde, Hennessey, Bennett (Norwich), Davies (Bolton).

The result maybe dissappointing but there were some good aspects in the game from a Wolves perspective.

I thought Henry was our best outfield player. He gets a lot of critisism on this website, but of late he has performed as well as any in midfield. Berra was our best defender, again someone who gets a lot of critisism on here.

The spirit in the side showed through right to the end. If only Doyle had scored in the last minute the mood leaving the ground would have been more positive. But at the end of the day we were beaten by a top 6 team – nothing to be ashamed about.

Not surprised that McCarthy changed the team, although I was expecting Guedioura to play instead of Forde. Next week against B’ham I expect there will be even more changes. It will be an opportunity for players like Foley, Guedioura to get match fit. Maybe another outing for Frimpong, assuming Arsenal allow him to play, and a chance for Eggert Johnson.

Looking at the upcoming fixtures, I’m despairing of where the next 3 points are coming from, let alone clean sheet. You certainly can’t fault any Mick McCarthy team for effort, but we don’t ‘arf look pedestrian, one dimensional, disorganised and flairless when compared to Swansea and Norwich. Watching those two on telly is like a breath of fresh air. Both are last year’s ‘Blackpools’ but with a bit more savvy, defensively. How embarrassing for us.

Paul Lambert and Brendan Rodgers light the way ahead, while we’re stuck with washed-out, recycled, old ideas with Mick and Clipboard leading the cavalry. We can’t defend, we retain possession for toffee and, for the most part, we can’t even score without Fletcher. Watching Wolves painfully flounder this season has been akin to sitting at a hospital bed, waiting for the death of a loved one.

Are Wolves a terminal case, or is there genuine hope of revival? If so, give me solid reasons without resorting to groundless rhetoric such as ‘the promoted teams can’t keep it up’ or ‘In Mick we trust’. I once trusted in Santa Claus, but we all know what happened there.

People are moaning about the 5 changes but we have played 3 games in 6 days!!!! Fletcher picked up knocks in both of the last two matches too. Besides, it was 0-0 when we brought on Jarvis and Fletcher was on the field well before we went 2-1 down. Hence, I think we lost due to a combination of some stupid errors and tiredness (and the ref didn’t help either). The only other team to play 3 games in such a short space of time was Arsenal and they lost too.

Im not making excuses as I think that some of the defending was very poor and Stearman was at fault for both goals – i.e. gave the ball away that led to the corner for their first and was nowhere to be seen when Cole crossed in for the winner.

However, there are some positives I feel such as –
    - Henry is playing quality at the moment
    - Berra and Johnson are definitely improving
    - Frimpong could be very useful (I know he didn’t play great but he hasn’t even trained with the others yet, and he knows how to tackle!)

I’m annoyed at what we did after we equalised, which was to just keep giving them the ball back, which was shocking!!!

Equally shocking was Mccarthys decision to yet again play a fullback in centre midfield, 2 days after admitting he got it wrong at Bolton doing the very same thing??? Bizarre!!!!

Where was Jonnsonn??? The CM we signed a couple of days ago why wasn’t he on the bench????

Round pegs in round holes needed for survival.

The ref was just awful, bordering on cheating, but we now have to accept that, because the club do, McCarthy should take a look at the likes of Wenger who was trying to defend the indefensible, our manager doesn’t even bother pointing out the obvious short comings of officials that keep happening week in week out.

For all those saying Chelsea didn’t get out of 1st gear, that was because they couldn’t this is the worst Chelsea team in years & we didn’t put them under enough pressure, why Jarvis didn’t attack their fullback at every opportunity god only knows, where was Hunt????

Edwards and Stearman, championship rubbish. Wardy must have eyes in the back of his head as he is superb at walking backwards time after time after time. Try getting closer to the player in future Wardy and don’t back off.

    1. We won’t win games if we can’t keep a clean sheet. Conceding two goals per game will get us relegated.
    2. I have never known such poor decisions from officials then to backed by the FA. There could be a whole DVD to the amount bad decisions this year. Off the top of my head Nemad’s sending off and not sending off Song beforehand, Lampard and Cole from yesterday not going, Newcastle at home, Sunderland at Home (Larson dive, Although justice was done)Liverpool away etc I could go on.

It has now got to the point where I’m considering for the first time not going again after this season. I agree about the formation but very surprised about Jarvis and Fletcher being dropped, but this is Mick and really I shouldn’t be surprised at the choices he made, sadly it turned out to be too much of task for young Forde playing against Ashley Cole. We as fans have wanted Hammill to be given a chance and he did, well okay his set pieces were good and the only area of the game he had an impact in. As for the Lampard possible sending off, yes Milijas got sent off for lot less but I do think it was and only a yellow card.

This wasn’t as good of Chelsea team we had beaten last season in my opinion, its a Chelsea side in transtion. Defensively they were struggling with our set pieces and so it was a huge disappointment not to get a point out of it after working so hard to get back into the game. I think also the belief of a certain journalist’s idea of this being the best Wolves in 30 years might now be on the wane, this Wolves team is not as good as last season but still they can survive but only by their skin-of-their-teeth again. well that might be more in hope on my part, if we are going to survive we are going to need some away points because the home form is deteriorating and fast.

“NOSEY” (sic), why is your always right? Everyone has the right to their opinion, the vast majority on here seem to understand the fact that it’s probably too late to save WWFC from relegation, but until it happens, no one will say so, BUT I WILL; Johnson said 8 wins to stay up, as I pointed out on another thread, it will be 4 wins from 20, so 8 from 18 seems a tad optimistic, I hazarded a guess that Johnson already accepts the inevitable and may even have his agent has been primed for some action if not in Jan, then June; Expect Fletch to go to Sunderland or Villa, Hennessy and suddenly on form Jarvis likely ‘rats from a sinking ship’ candidates too boot; I do find it offensive for MM, a man on a £1m+ salary, with a £100,000 company car, fantastic benefits, so well-off he will never have to work again, for the second time this season has said ” I feel like harming myself” and implied worse, just because he is no good at the job; Mick, there are millions of people out there with real problems and mental health issues, don’t make light of that to get sympathy, you Muppet!

    Agree with your post.

Wolves are amongst the “Also rans” with little prospect of competing with the top 6 in the near future.

The reality is we are a relatively small club with limited resourses. Probably the majority of supporters accept this without particulary liking it.

There is an excellant article by Robert Peston on the BBC News website (Business section) under the title Redknapp: An Englishman should manage England. It’s an interview with Harry Redknapp in which he gives an honest appraisal of how the game, (and the running of football clubs) has changed over the last 40 years or so, and where it’s heading.

RichWolf64 – as usual you are only interested in making comments that seek to undermine Wolverhampton Wanderers.

To expand on your argument I am prepared to concide that the £50M spent on Torres may have been wasted so please therefore change £150M to £100M spent in the last 12 months.

Numpty – Chelsea are the biggest spending club in the Premiership, Champions League last 16, currently 4th in the Premiership and double winners 2 seasons ago.

Wolves exceded expectations by nearly snatching a draw – if, like me, you came away from Molineux feeling disappointed it was because the team gave 100% and deserved a draw.

Try looking on the positive, I have challenged you before to post something positive about the Wolves but as usual you would rather spew out negative bile.

So we draw level on 85 minutes, why then did we try to hang on for a draw, defending so deep and letting Chelsea attack. Should have stayed positive. Not looking good, with the quality of football we are playing. Just effort, no vision or flair. The only reason why Johnson is looking good now is for the 2 holding midfielders we are playing now, similar to Brum setup of last season. If MM decides to continue playing both of them, i’m afraid more negative football to come…

As i’ve said so many times before we are several players short of mid table security. Mick please resign, you are a decent straight up guy, but now out of your depth. Mr Morgan get Mark Hughes now and give him a decent amount of money to spend or i fear it will be too late!!! we cannot keep doing things on the cheap! We are down, gone.

It was always going to be a tough 2nd half of the season, especially at home and we really should be upper mid table now having banked points to give us the necessary buffer for the afore-mentioned tough run in. Failure to take points at home against any of the 3 promoted sides says it all.

We are actually worse off that this time last season so how has MM and his coaching succeeded?

Okay the ref was poor but Wolves were yet again flat footed and lacked fluid movement, gave the ball away too easily. There is no skillfull ball play whatsoever from this squad.
At one point when Frimpong got the ball in a good position and looking to counter, there was no one to play it to, even Trevor Francis picked up on it. We have a bunch of championship players on low wages trying to compete in this league. Morgan must surely realise this. He doesn’t mind building a new ground but what of the squad. Who are we looking at to bring in? 33yrd old west ham has been, someone from Bristol city, it beggars belief the ambition of this owner!
I have said it before, Liverpool fans must thank their lucky stars he didn’t buy them!
I think that they may be planning for life in the fizzy as the players they are looking at are on LOW WAGES, something Morgan is adept with. We are nothing more than a losing side with a cluless manager who must be ignorant of the fact.
Defence wise we are non starters, a total shambles, clueless ball watchers, how they can justify the money they are paid is beyond me. A total disgrace to the shirt.

Same old story!! I am absolutely fuming. Chelsea should have been down to at least 10 if not 9 yesterday, the tackle by Lampard was appalling on Hammy, it could have broken his ankle and yet the ref saw it fit to only caution ‘good old Lamps’ yet, Milijas gets not only a red card but, the appeal refused!!

The FA don’t have a clue.

This situation is as tragic as the farce surrounding the Tevez affair when they saw fit to only fine West Ham as it was thought by them to be ”too late in the season to dock them points”,resulting in the relegation of Sheffield Utd……. and look what happened to them!!

    SBQ – sir billy quiet

Ref your comments – post 141

richwolf64 – he is clearly stating that he does not watch wolves though madmick tinted glasses and only has the clubs interests at heart. He sees that critisism is when understood and taken on board can be constructive. Sometimes if people continually say “you are the best, we are the best” the people in question become complacent.

Numpty – Chelsea are the biggest spending club in the Premiership, Champions League last 16, currently 4th in the Premiership and double winners 2 seasons ago – Guess what WOLVES are the 6th highest nett spenders in the EPL in the last 3 years – By your comparison we should be sitting in 6th place in the EPL…..sorry Where are we in the table??

Wolves exceded expectations by nearly snatching a draw – if, like me, you came away from Molineux feeling disappointed it was because the team gave 100% and deserved a draw – WHAT??? So lets write off 30 matches as we are not expected to win but the 8 games against the bottom 4 we will win or should do? This is YOUR problem – I am not bothered who the opposition is, we should aim to WIN, yes WIN every game otherwise as in your case defeat is acceptable, maybe that is why you like madmick so much, you are both used to and accept losing so easily!

Try looking on the positive, I have challenged you before to post something positive about the Wolves but as usual you would rather spew out negative bile – Again “negative bile” why is it negative bile? if people were unable to question decisions made by people in position of authority – would that not be a dictatorship? Maybe that is what you and your wonderful leader madmick want?, an unquestionable empire where results are unimportant, where we have a team of “nearly men” – players who nearly got a point or nearly won a game. I am very positive and I see a very bright future if we act now and remove our very “negative” manager.

Call yourselves a Wolves fan? what is it that you actually LIKE about the club?? Why do you bother going to matches?? Well wow, what a statement, as now you are claiming to be THE ONLY TRUE WOLVES FAN, that is a big pedestal to put yourself on, be careful you dont fall off. Your post may not be aimed at me directly BUT I am becoming very bored with your drivel, whilst it is great to claim undying loyalty to your leader it is also dangerous to alienate yourself in such a way. YES I am a wolves fan, yes I have seen wolves in all 4 divisions, yes I even been to away matches to watch wolves. I have seen managers come and go – Some in my opinion prematurely, some well overdue (back to madmick) I like many things about “MY” club, the main one being it is in my blood, I didn’t have a choice, wolves is my club….my dads club and his dads club. Wolves colours are the best colours of any football club in the world. I love the history of wolves, floodlit friendlies, england captains, players and I love molineux, my ground being kept in my town, the place of my birth in fact within 500yds of where I was born.

So, please do not pass off your comments as the only comments acceptable. I do not like our manager – WHY because our style of football, tactics, ability to activly change a game during play is non existent.

I like many others on here are fed up, and like many others are able to see beyond madmicks smokescreen of if’s but’s and maybe’s

Like many others we only have wolves at heart but our thoughts are opposite to your thoughts. Sometimes change is for the better, it is known as progression

148 Exile – OK let’s try to have a sensible discussion on where we are at.

1 – I don’t think things are perfect, far from it. I try to be positive in my posts and this comes mostly from a belief that positivity is a more useful way forward. Clearly constructive criticism is useful, but so many (I’ll spare you the list) on here NEVER post anything positive, or even constructive (see vindaloopi for frequent examples). It is also partly an historical position from defending Mick against continual criticism as he was busy getting us promoted and keeping us up.

2 – Without huge research I can suggest that approximately half the teams in the league ladder are higher than they were a year ago and half lower. We are basically the same. This is not great and I had 50 points in mind for this season but it is not a disaster (yet). I (and I expect you) spent 20 years watching our team desperately striving to drag itself out of the ‘division from hell’ please don’t think I’m in any hurry to return there.

3 – We all like to be entertained, but the principle job of a football team is to get points. I did not envy Blackpool fans last year when they played entertaining football all the way to relegation.

4 – Disappointments this season are RJ’s poor early season form, he has improved recently but has not been the defensive linchpin I confess I anticipated. The failure of KD to really form a partnership with SF. The failure to get two good midfielders who can allow us to play 2 out and out wingers. MM has made a few bad decisions with playing SW in the centre at Bolton the most glaring recent example. Some of the reffing has been beyond belief.

5 – Positives this season, SW is an ever improving LB. SF has been in outstanding form (lets be honest without him we would be doomed). CB is a much improved CB (!) Hennessey is at the absolute top of his game (especially in the last few weeks) and looks much more confident.

No you tell me – how far apart are we really?

We concede two goals a game and we are not improving.
Most of these goals are preventable and are caused by
    lapses in concentration
    losing possession of the ball
    ball watching

Out of every 5 games we play the likes of berra, stearman and ward have 2 good games and 3 bad ones where they let in silly goals.

Just to comment on Steve Morgan and Jez Moxeys dedication to sticking with the manager – I think that they have been proved right by Sunderland’s shocking performances since they changed their manager. Sticking with the manager at Wolves has proved a priceless decision. Since sticking with thick Mick, have you fellow fans noticed our accent up the table? It’s about time you lot recognised that spending money on the ground is more important to us fans than getting a decent manager and investing in the team.
What most impresses me is the regular contact Mr Morgan has with the supporters, he’s a real chairman who relates to the club and the fans, and I don’t think he leaves the dirty work to Jez Moxey. 153 – (Wolves4eva) What an extremely passionate post…an excellent read. Pretty much the same goes for me, bud. I’m Wolvo born and bred; I’m proud of my home City; my family are all Wolves mad; I introduced my own kids to the Wanderers at a very early age (taking them to Molineux whilst we were in the old 4th Division) and my grandkids are being similarly raised in Gold & Black. So, nobody should doubt my -or your- passion for this great club. As you say, it’s in the blood.

I’ve got all the respect in the world for fellow fans that hold contrasting views (they’re to be welcomed), but like you, I take issue when some fans seemingly THINK they hold the higher moral ground and resort to patronising comments such as, “Go follow some other club” simply because they don’t like what they hear. Well, to such people I say GROW UP, whoever you are, and accept that your view is NOT -and never has been- the ‘correct’ one. There’s no such thing, nor do Wolves value you any more than any other paying fan. You’re just a face in the crowd like everyone else, so quit the holier-than-thou crap. Football isn’t an exact science that can be whittled down to mere ‘rights’ or ‘wrongs’. It’s about fluctuating opinion based on current (and past) circumstances. Speak for yourself only at all times. Live and let live -hopefully with a bit of grace and tolerance towards others while you’re at it. Do those things and maybe we’d all see far fewer insults flying around on here. Honestly, it’s like a kid’s playground, at times.

As you specifically aimed your comments at SBQ, allow me to say this: I may not always agree with everything he says, but I don’t doubt -not even for a moment- his love of our club. Why, I often find myself agreeing with him, in certain respects. The same applies to other regular (but often outspoken) posters such as Richwolf64, Noisy, 100%Wolf, Perthwolf, The Flying Winger, Johnwolf, etc. There are some very contrasting posters among that little lot, but it’s nearly always a worthwhile read because I know they care about my club, just as I (and you) do.

    (156) Chris. If your talk with Mr. Swain is the truth then you’ve just confirmed one of my long held opinions on the Moxey-Morgan-McCarthy relationship. I know we are all on the outside looking in and we try to put 2&2 together & come up with 4 regarding certain situations at our club. But i have said for a long time that Moxey&Morgan are comfortable with Mick because he isn’t banging on their door every 5 mins demanding this or that. I mean really demanding if you know what i mean. Money, Players etc. How quickly the tea urn boils at Compton. O’Neill and his like are very demanding managers to work with. In your ear all the time. Never satisfied with 2nd best. They don’t want a fiery, demanding, outspoken, driven manager. They want a poodle. And Mick has been around a long time. He’s not stupid. He knows that for him Wolves is as good as it gets. He aint never gonna manage the big boys! It went badly for him at Sunderland and he aint gonna rock the boat at Wolves when he needs the support of his gaffers. If he leaves Wolves its a fast track back to a Championship club so he aint gonna push them too hard is he? After all how many inept ex Wolves managers have gone on to be successful elsewhere? None! I think the real reason the Manager stumbles from one mistake to the next, continually failing to solve simple problems within his team says more about Moxey&Morgan than it does about McCarthy. I hope i’m wrong but we’ll never see an inspirational charismatic manager in charge at Molineux. And thats why we’ll never regain our past glories. Oh and by the way don’t want to keep going on about it but did you know O’Neill has won as many matches in 6 as McCarthy has in over half a season!! Honestly you couldn’t make it up!

175 – Happy New Year to you, too, Sue (and Streako). Don’t put yourself down, Sue, because I’m sure you’re a bright lady who’s just WAY too modest, lol ;-)

Yeah, make it up with Streako -I know you can do it! Try sending him a nice, New Year’s message…well, it’s a start, right? LOL!

Like all Wolves fans I feel very frustrated at how things are going at present, never thought we would be struggling as much as this. We have some good players but feel MM at times is naive in selection or is it a case of having his favourites. One player who has improved much this seasom besides Hennessey is Berra who I feel should be our team captain, with Kightly coming back to near his old self all is not lost. Keep supporting them whatever you views on MM may be.

what annoyed me most was that MM said he changed the team to “freshen the legs, even though those dropped wanted to play!!”…are you mad…we have a cup game this week so you could have rested them for the next 2 weeks if you wanted…made no sense at all and we got what we deserved,.. and to all those who slated the shouts for Martin O’Neill, well look at Sunderland now!

Ironically, if you two had a few beers in a pub together -rather than arguing on here- you’d probably get on great, lol! In the obvious absence of a boozer, I’ve asked my local voodoo priest to intervene with a touch of hocus pocus and a liberal sprinkling of lightning bolts, thunderclaps, storms, etc. Well, you get the picture? So, keep my Nobel Prize nomination on ice, Noisy, because anything’s possible.

I just hope the slightly deaf priest heard my instructions clearly and you don’t turn into a gold & black frog… ;-)
