Roger Johnson calls Wolves axe ‘the worst moment of his career’

Wolves captain Roger Johnson today revealed being axed recently was the worst moment of his career.

Johnson was dropped by boss Mick McCarthy for the 2-1 win against Sunderland, only to come off the bench and then win an immediate recall when his replacement Jody Craddock injured a hamstring.

The 28-year-old, who suffered relegation with Birmingham last season, hasn’t played as well as had been hoped since joining Wolves for £4.5million last summer.

But the skipper played his best game for the club in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Arsenal.

He said: “I was happy with my performance. Being left out of the team was the worst moment of my career to date. Being left out through not playing well enough has never happened to me before.

“It hit home big time. I certainly don’t want that feeling again. I’ll be doing whatever it takes to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“It’s about getting my performance levels to be good and consistent and hopefully going into the new year I can keep it like that.

“It was backs-to-the-wall on Tuesday but they’re good games to play in – I enjoy them.

“My performance levels have been mentioned before but I was a lot happier with my game – that’s more like me.”

Johnson is now looking forward to extending Wolves’ two-match unbeaten run at Bolton tomorrow and insists they need to win the crunch clash, given their four-point advantage over the hosts.

He said: “It’s one of those big games where we could end up seven points in front of Bolton or only one point in front.

“It’s one of those games we need to win – we could move up a few positions.”
