Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Karl Henry admits Wolves’ position is ‘not acceptable’
Friday 23rd December 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Karl Henry today admitted Wolves’ position is “not acceptable” and revealed their poor return is making every game hard for the players.
Wolves go into the festive period in 17th, just a point above the drop zone after 10 defeats in their last 14 games which have yielded just eight points.
Despite that poor run, Mick McCarthy’s side have yet to fall into the relegation zone this season but now prepare for two away games, at Arsenal and Bolton, on the back of six straight away losses.
The former captain echoed chief executive Jez Moxey’s assessment by admitting Wolves have under-performed so far in 2011-12.
Asked if he thought Wolves had under-achieved this season, the midfielder said: “One hundred per cent. I don’t think anyone is in disagreement about that.
“We know it’s not acceptable where we are in the league. If you had asked us where we wanted to be at the start of the season, it certainly wouldn’t be in or just above the relegation zone.
“We expected more points than we’ve got and it makes it hard every game you go into now. Yes, we need more points.”
Wolves haven’t enjoyed the best of luck from officials, with a penalty and a goal not given in the 2-1 defeat against Newcastle, Stoke defender Jonathan Woodgate staying on the pitch and the Potters scoring a controversial equaliser in the 2-1 loss last weekend.
But Henry reckons it’s a lack of quality as well as luck, while trying to see Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Norwich as a step in the right direction.
He said: “We can blame it on luck but there have been times when we haven’t been good enough.
“There have been a few things that have gone against us, but you make your own luck and we started on Tuesday night by coming back and getting a positive result.
“We are trying to do something about it and with performances like Tuesday and the crowd really got behind us.
“We might have lost that game a couple of weeks ago and it was a good point.”

Players have under-performed, yes, but I blame two things above all else.
1. The Board decided that buying Johnson and signing O’Hara permanently was enough to keep us out of trouble.
2. Mick has had years at this club to sort out the defence and has still not managed it. He used to be a defender for Gawd’s sake!
I fear ambition at the top of the club is focused on bricks and mortar rather than the squad.
Remember the look of terror on Steve Morgans’s face as he wasn’t sure if we’d been relegated at the end of last season? I thought that would wake the board up to the need to invest in quality and ensure we weren’t in that position again. Seemingly not.

We lack quality in certain positions but I also think coaching (or lack of it) is playing a part.
In full back positions we seem to go AWOL at times and lack discipline.
Against Norwich, I kept seeing Fletcher out wide trying to help out, leaving no aerial presence in the box where we need him. Set pieces come to little, corners rushed or taken short too often.
If we have to score 3 to win and 2 to get a point what hope have we got? I look to January in hope but that is all because I fear all the talk of Enouha, Kenwynne Jones, Diame etc.. will amount to little as other clubs in better positions will be prepared to pay more wages.

It is true that this season DISAPPOINTING sums it up so far. We are currently a poorer team than last year, much less resilient and easier to beat. The only bright spot has been the confirmation that Fletcher is an excellent striker who, with good service, will score a load of goals. Trouble is finding the quality to get balls to him. Why do Wolves cross the ball so poorly. Surely we practise this kind of thing. Need to get more form and productivity out of our widemen. Tell Jarvis he MUST get to that by-line and cross. All that cutting back onto his right foot is now so predictable. It has been hard work watching Wolves this season (for me a 250 mile round trip). I don’t want another season like last and a last day nailbighter. Sacking Mick is NOT the answer. I think the players have to step up and show us what they are made of. I think a number are standing by the exit door after poor performances. We certainly need some players in. We are a pretty thin squad. We need some super bargain signings who gel right away. Mmmm, when does that happen. What is going on with Johnson? Something wrong there? Is he unhappy? What a disappointment. If Craddock was fit Roger should be out the team for a while. What a shame we have so few youngsters coming through. This is a big disappointment as I thought this was going to be our future. C’mon Wanderers, you are much better that this

No.2 – Firstly, please give your caps lock key a press.
Secondly, enrol in an English spelling course of some kind, and thirdly, at least give new signings the opportunity to actually join the club officially, and indeed, play for us, before jumping to these ridiculous conclusions.
We, as a nation of football supporters, really need to look at our now frighteningly predictable reactions to “bad” results. We seem to be caught up in a “I know best, we didn’t get the results we deserved so sack the manager, ridicule his every decision, INSERT ANY AVAILABLE MANAGER’S NAME HERE, would do so much better, the owner is only in it to make a quick buck.” This is across the whole league (including Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea etc), and indeed the whole of society, and does us no good whatsoever. I’m not suggesting that we stop debating, or “plow on regardless”, but knee-jerk, I want instant gratification methods, are going to get us nowhere.

How long does this have to go on before someone pays with their job. I am sick of hearing people make excuses.. I am sick of hearing people stick up for Mick.. We are heading towards the championship.. Defeat is all we know.. We have forgotten how to win.. Saying that we have forgotten how to even draw till last week.. Mick has done a great job until this year.. But every manager only has a certain amount of time, before it is best to move on.. Especially when they lose every week.. Even Alex Ferguson & Arsen Wenger, would have come under fire if they was losing every week. Yes we might be poor little old Wolves as people keep pointing out.. But I have a little more pride in my team than do expect defeat week after week.. This is not the way forwards its the way to nowhere..

I beleive the problems we have are twofold.
The owner is a business man and supports another club, so money is being held back from MM until the expansion is completed and sold. This means that buying players who have a ‘football’ brain is virtually impossible with the lack of investment.
Secondly the manager is no tactician, proved over and over again. Why doesn’t he put a stop to backpeddling, all it does is allow the attacker to proceed further into our territory. Stop the other Wolves players from retreating aimlessley, why not cover his team mate who after losing a tackle to the attacker now has a chance to stop the attacker.
Finally may I ask what exactly has our manager achieved in his managerial position.
All he can claim to have done is to get Wolves promoted – once.

isn’t it obvious to all you stupid Wolves fans that the OWNER doesn’t want to spend ANY serious cash on players?
One marquee signing per season is about all we’re going to get…
DO YOU not think that Mick would love the chance to spend £10m on one player who would bang in 20 goals a year? Do you not think that if he had the cash he’d be splashing it in order to guarantee Wolves’ (and his own) position?
The anger on these boards is completely mis-directed. STEVE MORGAN and MOXEY are completely to blame for this situation. If you pay peanuts you get monkeys.
We pay peanuts… we get Elokobi, Berra, Ward, Henry, Vokes, Foley et al…

Have to agree with a lot said by 6 and 7 amongst others.
The 3 Ms need to decide
What is the plan for the club?
If they want to ensure their premiership status for the long term the squad needs serious investment. Stoke did not acheive their current status by buying bargain basement players, They have year by year improved the squad with quality. Most of their players would easily get into our first team,we cant say the same the other way round.
If they dont have the funds or investment needed just be open and honest and say so.
That way we know every year it will be a relegation scrap and one year we will go down.
Henry is right to say what we all know. He doesnt say how poor we defend and if this doesnt improve significantly we will end up in the bottom 3.
Also for a team that scores so few goals, why dont we really work on set pieces. I dont mean O’hara trying to shoot everytime. I mean good balls in the box with players in the box busting a gut to get on the end of it.

Conceeding roughly 2 goals a game for the last 14 matches should have alerted the necessity for a new defensive coach, assuming that someone is attempting to fulfil that role at the moment. Evidence suggests it is doubtful. Regrettably, Johnson has been a huge disappointment. I genuinely thought he would do a good job.

Where has this myth come from that the owner will not spend money?
Morgan has sanctioned over £40m in transfers since he has been here making us relatively big spenders even by Premiership standards.
The problem lies with the idiot who got to spend/waste it !!!
Surman, Halford, Hoff, Van Damme, Bia, Griffiths, Shackell, Friend, Castillo, Darren Ward ….. theres well £10m of never given a chance/not good enough waste. Lets not even mention Eastwood et al!
McCarthy has without doubt been backed financially more than any other manager in our History by a long long way…yet all I see are a team full of Championship at best triers or players who have been relegated previously (sometimes twice) who continue make schoolboy mistakes week in week out.
Mick, an International defender himself. has had the chance time and time again to sort the defence out and has FAILED dramatically everytime.
IMO, given the tools at his disposal McCarthy has failed, probably due to his limited ability at this level.
Most of all though Moxey has failed us by not recognising this and not making a hard no sentiment but correct decision 18 months ago.
Morgan has certainly not failed the club.

Whats the point in arguing about Mick. He is not going anywhere, Morgan does not want to pay more for a Marquee Manager.
As i see it, Morgan will be quite happy in the Championship for a year. Reduced Capacity with Steve Bull stand being torn down, (well maybe). This means Moxey will be able to charge premiership prices for the fans whilst the players will be on Championship wages.
It’s win, win and as we all know McCarthey is actually quite good at getting teams out of the Championship.

When are people going to sit up and realise it is precisely because of the manager we have and the wage level our club will not rise above, that we will not sign any body of significance, nor with proven Premiership experience?
Any player worth his salt in the Prem would HAVE to take a pay cut to join Wolves. Football is not in a pay restraint area for Premiership quality players, ergo, why join Wolves? What have they to offer a player with Premiership experience?
Only the probability of a relegation dogfight going by 2 1/2 years of being in the Premiership so far.
Unlikely the chance of playing even Europa league football as the manager has already boosted his current players confidence by telling them they’re not good enough, so it would be a waste of time.
Good message to prospective signings: Don’t come here if you have ambitions above your station.
Likewise unless you fawn and salivate over the wit and footballing wisdom of the Barnsley Brawler, don’t expect to play on a regular basis, if at all.
It’s a real shame what is happening to this club since we rose to the top tier, more so since Steve Morgan took over. He has misled fans with his promise of investment. Investment, a joke.
No offence to our latest recruit but will he step straight into the team and make all the difference required to score goals and defend against conceeding them? NO! Why did we sign lee Griffiths and the Airfix kid?
We have a dire defensive problem and we’re about to sell a natural left back from our Academy and have extended Danny Baaths loan to all season long. Is that an indication of how good our academy is then?
Before any one jumps on my back and says do I want Wolves to do a Leeds, no I don’t and I don’t see why we should have to do a Leeds in order to progress season on season. What I see very clearly in our players is that our manager cannot motivate them above the mediocre level they are at. Perhaps another manager with better man management skills would do a better job. It’s very clear we lack quality in ALL the areas where we need it most. From the manager upwards and downwards.
God help us for the next part of the season.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The extra day benefits both teams and, to that end, Wolves will gain precious little benefit. Our defensive weaknesses will continue to be exposed by a vastly superior Gunners midfield and a RVP who is on fire. Johnson is proving to be a bust to this point and if Berra continues to act like a WWF wrestler we will be in trouble. Zubar and Ward will have to be highly selective in their runs forward as Walcott and Gervinho will kill us with pace.
We are in for a rough ride over the holidays and ANY points we get will be pure bonus. I really hope I am proved wrong but this season to date has been abysmal in terms of our lack of quality and effort.

100% wolf 33, i take your point that money has been spent on transfers and that Mick has a record of some really poor buys especially in defence.
But serious investment has been lacking since we got into this league. what i mean by that is for all the players you listed for 110 mill Stoke that on just crouch, and 8 mill on kenywne jones the season before. when you are adding real quality like this to your squad year on year, you become a mid table team with a europa cup place and not a team scrapping to just stay up every year.

Part of the problem are the fans – we’ve accepted this rubbish with only the occasional outburst of anger(which MM, in typical fashion, slapped down). All this ‘get behind the team’ rhetoric is all well and good but quite frankly is getting us nowhere. Just note how many fans on this site actually believe that Henry played well on Tuesday night – unbelievable! He was awful,as he has been all season so far!! The rest were nearly as bad. Results do not lie! Also, let’s not blame it on bad luck or poor refereeing decisions. It’s all down to poor management, very average players and fans who accept that this is all we should expect because we’ll never be good enough to be in the top half of this league. We folks, I wiil just not accept that!! For God’s sake let’s show more ambition and pride – we really have become a team that all in the Premiership expect to beat home or away. We’ve become, and it really pains me to say it, easy fodder for all and sundry. Nothing is going to change until someone with real power(Morgan) makes some really tough decisions – but they need to be made quickly,so no more money is wasted by MM. Unfortunately, I can’t see it happening soon!!
A while ago I posted that irrespective of ‘anything’ MM will be at the Mol next season (and beyond). Relegation and he will be seen as the Messiah to get us back up (I mean just look at his record!); survive by the skin of our teeth and he is a genius and must be re-signed on a longer contract (just look at his record – or perhaps not!) I predicted on here 0 or 1 point from the Stoke and Norwich games. I will now predict that the 24 hour delay in the Arsenal game will not alter the outcome. Look at the stats – Two clean sheets all season; Lost last six away games, in which have scored 4 and conceded 16; 4 points from 24 on travels in 2011-12. It does not look good for Tuesday. How many managers survive these appalling returns? The lack of movement by the Board is deafening!
Now look to Sunderland where the Board saw the problem and moved on it – a new manager with a great track record (as publicly stated by Sir Alex) who can motivate players and give them a game plan based on sound tactical knowledge. First game a 1-0 loss away to Spurs and they played well. Then QPR 2 Sunderland 3. They will continue upwards. Says it all – another missed opportunity to do something positive and make progress.
A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY 2012 TO ALL WOLVES SUPPORTERS WHEREVER THEY MAY BE.

Thanks for telling us Karl. We’d never had known!
On the final day of last season, many like myself said that this must not happen again.I have my doubts about how commmitted the higher management are to having a Premier League team.Perhaps they are happier just ambling along as a Championship team.Well the Wolves fans are not.WE see Wolves as a Premier League Club though the management and playing staff may not show that. The club is too big for the current management.
Mick McCarthy has done a great job at Wolves but has reached as far as he can go.Something that the higher management have failed to see.
Well we are in another fine mess. The team is simply not good enoughHow can we shore up a defence that is leaking goals like a sieve does with water.WE have not moved forward and have been found out.The only hope is that we stay up again by default.ie.other teams get less points. If we do survive this mess, can the Wolves management finally do something about it and invest in the playing staff.

I was going to have a flutter on WW getting 50 points this season. We will now do well to get 40. What a stop-start season that is currently DISAPPOINTING. I want WW to be respected as a god Premier League team. Right now I bet EVERY team thinks they can get a win against us. I think Mick does a good job but some players need to improve their form and maybe some need to move on and be replaced. Right now we have very little variation and we must be so predictable and easy to anticipate for our opposition. Roger Johnson needs to deliver or go out of the side for a while when Jody is fit. Milias and SEB are dining at the last chance saloon. Doyle, Hunt, Edwards and O’Hara can all go up a gear or 2. Stars so far are the wonderful Hennessey and the ever – improving Ward, with Henry emerging in recent games. We definately need some signings and players who are strong leaders. Please Wolves – save me from another last day like last season. If we play top our potential we are good enough. Let’s start doing it!

Whilst acknowledging everyone is entitled to an opinion, some of the comments on this website about Karl Henry are crazy. As someone who’s played semi-pro i can appreciate Karls role
in the team. His job is ultimately break up opposition possession and give to another Wolves player, pref the ‘ball player’ in O’hara or similar. Everyone slates him because he goes sideways….funny cus that’s his job and he does it brilliantly. He’s probably the fittest player at the club and one who many clubs in the prem would gladly have of us. If we go down he’ll be man in demand. All wolves need us some proper investment, McCarthy is a solid Manager. Some investment in a good CB, playmaking midfielder
is all that’s required for Wolves to be safe. The real probkem at Wolves is lack of investment in quality players…. Lets hope Morgan & Moxey give McCarthy the tools to do the job. UTW!
