Christophe Berra backs Eggert Jonsson to be a hit
Friday 23rd December 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Wolves new-boy Eggert Jonsson was today backed to be an “excellent” signing for the club – by the man who knows him best.
Manager Mick McCarthy’s first capture of the January transfer window, believed to be for around £250,000, came as something of a surprise to many.
But, according to Christophe Berra, who made the same move for £2.3million in February 2009 and played alongside him for several years, the Iceland international will be a huge hit.
Berra said: “Eggert will be an excellent signing. At 23, he’s a good age and he’s a player who can develop here at Wolves.
“He has a great attitude and he’s always been a very fit boy, so the potential is definitely there. It’s a good deal for us.
“Eggert’s contract was up at the end of the season and there were a few other clubs looking at him.
“But we got in there first and I’m looking forward to working with him again.”
Berra believes Jonsson will handle the extra pressure of playing in the Premier League.
The Scotland intenational said: “He had become a regular at Hearts by the time I moved to Wolves. He has the right attitude to handle a move like this.
“He’s played 12 games for Iceland, and it doesn’t matter which country you play for, international football is still a huge thing to handle.”
Wolves’ other Scot, Steven Fletcher, appears to have the chance of international football again. Scotland boss Craig Levein intends to watch him when he tours around English clubs next month.
Fletcher hasn’t played for his country since he contacted the Scottish Football Association earlier this year to reject a call-up for a Carling Nations Cup match against Northern Ireland.
