Wolves winger Matt Jarvis has a plan to bamboozle defenders

Wolves winger Matt Jarvis is used to staying one step ahead to ensure the opposition are ‘left’ trailing.

As a recently-capped England international, the wide man has had to alter his game to try to keep rival teams guessing.

Now the hardworking 25-year-old has revealed how he is trying to become two-footed to keep the opposition guessing as he prepares to face Stoke tomorrow.

He said: “That’s something you need to do – playing on the left and being right-footed, people expect you to cut back to put your crosses in.

“But you’ve got to keep everyone guessing so I’ve been practising continually with my left foot to make my crossing as good as it can be.

“If I put a cross in my right foot and one with my left, no-one knows which one I’m going to use next. It’s about keeping everyone guessing and hopefully that’s what I’m doing now.

“I’ve been delighted with my last few performances and I want to keep that up.”

For Jarvis, trying to add more to his game has become second nature since his England breakthrough, which he admits has made him more of a marked man.

He said: “When I came back from playing for England, I was getting two men put on me and you have to try to overcome that.

“People get to know your game and what you’re going to do so I had to try to change and not be predictable.

“It’s hard but that’s what the best players do and you have to do that. It’s a compliment in one way and it’s frustrating in another.

“But if I’ve got two men on me, then someone else is free on our team so we can exploit that.”

Tomorrow’s Staffordshire derby brings a different, more uncompromising test to Molineux.

But Jarvis has revealed he has been working on tactics to throw the Potters off course.

He said: “It’s probably going to be different against Stoke because they’ll want us to put the crosses in, as they’ve got big centre-halves who like heading the ball out.

“So maybe we’ll have to have a little think about that.”

Jarvis was Wolves’ man of the match in the 4-1 defeat at Manchester United last Saturday, giving makeshift right-back Chris Smalling a torrid time on occasions.

Like United, Stoke are currently playing a centre-half at right-back, with Jonathan Woodgate deployed there against Tottenham.

Jarvis sees other areas to exploit, adding: “It’s a slightly different opponent; centre-backs are used to being tight to a striker with their back to goal, whereas out wide, they might be a bit more susceptible to pace.

“Saying that, they were fantastic and beat Spurs, so it’s hard to call.”

Wolves look more of a threat with Steven Fletcher in the mood to score and Jarvis setting up the chances and the winger is relishing their link-up together.

He said: “It’s been good – a few of his goals last season and this year have come from my crosses, so we do have a good understanding.

“He’s fantastic in the air and he’s got a great leap. It’s great as a wide man to look up and think he’ll outjump someone and get a great header in.

“Hopefully he can keep it going and I can keep supplying the chances for him.”

Hard work is a pre-requisite for any Wolves player and Jarvis believes boss Mick McCarthy is right to continue their positive approach.

The wide man said: “The gaffer knows when we’re in people’s faces, that’s the best way we play. We’ve seen over the last few years when we’re on it, we’re a tough team to break down.

“We’re one of the fittest teams around so if we can keep the tempo up, hopefully we can wear the other team down.”
