Plea to recapture England form is driving Wolves’ Matt Jarvis
Tuesday 13th December 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Rejuvenated Wolves winger Matt Jarvis today revealed how boss Mick McCarthy’s plea to play like he did to win an England call-up has brought him back to his best.
Player of the Year Jarvis has been in sizzling form recently and set up goals against Manchester United, Sunderland and Wigan, prompting the manager to declare the 25-year-old back to his best.
The wide man, who made his 150th appearance for the club in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford which was also his 250th League outing, is benefitting from McCarthy’s ‘back to basics’ approach.
Jarvis said: “The gaffer was saying it was about getting back to what I was doing when I got called up for the England team. That’s what I’ve been trying to do and hopefully it’s working.
“The way we’ve played in the last few weeks has helped me get back to what I do and I’m certainly enjoying it. I’ve now got to keep doing that week-in week-out.”
Six-goal top scorer Steven Fletcher led the campaign to see Jarvis recalled to the England squad in Saturday’s Express & Star after he won his first cap against Ghana in March.
And Jarvis is equally happy with the way they link up together.
He said: “It seems to be going well and is proving a good combination between us. It was nice to get another assist and for Fletcher to get another goal. Hopefully we can keep that going.
“When you’re a winger, a lot of the time it’s instinct in terms of the strikers and you just know where they’re going to be. At the moment he’s getting on the end of the crosses.
“It’s my role to get past the full-back and get some crosses in and it’s always great to know you’ve got a striker in fantastic form to get on the end of them.
“Even when we haven’t had the best results, he’s scored and, if he can keep that going, I’m sure it will help us pick up points.”
