Wolves left-back Stephen Ward wants back-to-back home wins
Monday 12th December 2011, 2:00PM GMT.
Wolves left-back Stephen Ward today targeted a Christmas bonus of a maximum six-point return from their next two home games.
Ward believes if he and his team-mates can match the performance of Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Manchester United and the 2-1 win over Sunderland the week before, they can overcome Stoke and Norwich at Molineux over the next eight days.
Mick McCarthy’s side played well at Old Trafford but were undone by some world-class finishing as Nani and Wayne Rooney each scored twice either side of Steven Fletcher’s sixth goal of the season, which reduced the arrears to 2-1 just after the break.
Asked if Wolves were capable of sending Stoke and Norwich packing if they reproduced their weekend display, Ward said: “Of course, yes, and with the way we played against Sunderland.
“The next two games are at home where on the whole we’ve been really good this season. So we’re looking to these matches to take four, if not six, points because we need to be aiming to take a maximum return.
“We’ve always looked at these next two for points. It was pleasing that we put on a decent performance at United and didn’t let ourselves down. We were better than the result showed.
“But when we look at the fixture list, we know our Premier League safety isn’t going to depend on how we get on at Old Trafford.
“We’re looking forward to these next two games because we really want to push on.”
Ward believes key players performed for Wolves at Old Trafford, including Fletcher and captain Roger Johnson on his recall.
He said: “Fletcher played well and Roger was outstanding – he really had the bit back between his teeth.
“It was a spirited performance and one which we can take a lot of credit from.”
Ward feels he has a real understanding with Matt Jarvis.
He said: “Myself and Jarvis did well down the left. We combined quite well – it’s nice to play behind him all the time.
“I feel our understanding has grown every time we’ve played together.”
