Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Mick McCarthy ready for Wolves thrills and spills
Wednesday 7th December 2011, 2:17PM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today told fans to brace themselves for more “excitement and entertainment” this season.
Sunday’s welcome 2-1 win against Sunderland came after Wolves could have gone 2-0 down, equalising 25 seconds after Wayne Hennessey’s penalty save from Sebastian Larsson.
It was the latest high-pressure game Wolves have come through with flying colours after the late fightback to draw 2-2 against Swansea and the 3-1 win over Wigan.
McCarthy believes the attitude of his team and their determination to play a pressing game will result in more thrills and spills.
“This is us – this is what we’re like,” said the boss.
“Are we a top 10 team? No, we’re not at the moment.
“But, I’ll tell you what, we’re exciting and entertaining. We’re anything but dull.
“And I thought we played well on Sunday. The attitude of the players to create a really high-tempo and energetic exciting performance was superb. We were trying to do that all game.”
McCarthy said his players were exhausted after the Sunderland win.
“They kept going, there were some of them on their knees at the end of the game because they’d worked their socks off,” he added.
“I was delighted with them, and not just because we won, but I was pleased with how we played.
“When we were 1-0 down, I wasn’t thinking ‘oh no, we’ve been awful’, I thought we’d played alright.
“Sunderland scored against the run of play with an amazing strike.”
Meanwhile, McCarthy refused to say if midfielder Karl Henry would make an immediate return to the team for Saturday’s trip to Manchester United.
Henry is available again after a one-match ban just weeks after McCarthy revealed his team would be “Karl and 10 others”.
And the boss has a dilemma in central midfield with Dave Edwards in good form and Jamie O’Hara a goal threat, and the Wolves chief highlighted the performance of the former.
“Dave Edwards was brilliant on Sunday, he played very well,” he said.
“Dave can play wide as well. He was great.”

In answer to thicko sorry i mean ‘streako’
Is MM deluded? Nowhere near as much as a lot of our ‘supporters’
Is MM tactically inept? Who made the substitutions that changed the game on Sunday?
Does MM have a puppet with a clipboard next to him? He is the same ‘puppet’ that the last 4 Wolves managers have seen as good enough to employ. Show some respect!
Has MM got bottle? Do you want to ask him face to face?……..that I would like to see.
Has he got a better record than Steve Bruce? Has he spent a fraction of the money that Bruce has on both fees and wages? If you would really prefer Steve Bruce as Wolves manager then you really are deluded and……..stupid.

Sounds like the place has been remade for Henry with the comment Dave can play wide as well.
He will never live the comment down Karl & Ten others. and would think Henry was not very happy either.
He is doing it again with the Doyle comments, SEB would if given the chance be a far more goal threat, Doyle needs to be dropped for a while, but of course he can play wide!
Sounds like some tinkering is about to happen.
If it does he will never learn.

Streako, Have you managed a team from the Championship to the Premiership? NO.
Have you kept a team in the Premiership for it’s third season? NO.
Have you taken your country to within a penalty shoot-out of the Quarter-finals of a World Cup? NO.
Have you played professionally at several top clubs, including playing for top overseas clubs? NO.
Do you have the respect of your fellow professionals, and others that know the hame inside out? NO.
Are YOU in a position to criticise a man that has accomplished all of the above? NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally, to accuse McCarthy of having no bottle when he took the criticism from a minority of fans after his sustitutions, and was then proven right is laughable. People without bottle don’t drop club captains, don’t leave out star players who are off their game, etc.
Did you watch the tactics on Saturday? (another NO, unless you watched it on someone’s telly) He got it absolutely spot on. Far from tactically inept. You can’t play “Barcelona Football” with limited finances. We can’t afford Messi, Xabi, Iniesta, etc, and so he has to play what he can afford.

Let’s put the game into perspective. We beat a very poor team who were managerless.! ?? I wouldn’t have expected any other result. But if that penalty had gone in would you all be singing Mad Micks praises.. I doubt it very much. As he himself has admitted it would have been the final nail in his coffin. Number 20 as for all for winning the must win games you have a short memory.. We couldn’t even beat Blackburn in the last day of the season to stay in the league…. Good opposition would have slaughtered us on Sunday don’t be fooled.. jez is right about the fans being fickle. One win and we are suddenly a top ten team again! No wonder the rest of the premier league are laughing at us.
i really don’t get all this negativity surrounding McCarthy, yeah, we all know he’ll never be the best manager in the league, and we all know he has faults, but the simple facts are that we are 5 points better off at this stage of the season than what we were last, and that’s with us not playing well at all.also it’s clear to see that the players are fully behind the manager, how many clubs can say that?? even with the limited ability of both players and manager, they can only get better as time goes by, as i’m sure mccarthy and the boys are learning all the time, and as the season goes on, villa, norwich, swansea, stoke, fulham, thats without mentioning the bottom 3 clubs will all have bad runs at some point. i can’t wait for the financial restrictions to kick in regarding spending, as some as the clubs that compete around us are going to struggle to pay wages at the current rate, meaning players will be unhappy at taking pay cuts, meaning they’ll want to leave, and i’ll think you’ll see quite a few teams being broke up, and therefore relegated. and where will we be??? we’ll be financially sound, whilst still in a position to bring in new players, with the existing players remaining fully behind the manager. just keep the faith folks…

Good result on Sunday! Felt we deserved the points!
I’d drop Hunty and start Hammill, playing him and jarvo on the wings! Play Fletcher up front with O’hara just behind him and Henry and Edwards in midfield.
Don’t drop Zubar, he is by far the best right back we have at the moment. Stearman’s a centre half and only championship quality!
Berra played well sunday, won all headers and looked composed, hopefully Johnson can now get back to his best!
In january we do need to invest in new players but I think we need to get rid of some dead wood. Raise more funds from selling Keogh, Kightly, Milijas, Vokes and the centre half on loan in France (cant remember his name)
WE NEED ANOTHER QUALITY CENTRE HALF , ANOTHER DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER (I QUITE LIKE DIAME FROM WIGAN OR BRITTAIN FROM SWANSEA?) AND I’D GET A QUALITY STRIKER ON LOAN FROM A TOP CLUB (LIKE HOW BOLTON GOT STURRIDGE LAST SEASON)
MCCARTHY PLEASE BUY QUALITY NOT QUANTITY!

BSD.
Hang on here Mr Mick.
Lets forget the thrills and spills for a while.
Lets play football only to gain points – no matter how boring.
Lets grind out draws wherever we can and nick wins at any given opportunity.
We need to put points not pints on the table.
So lets play some clever tactics and just get 1 or 3 points in the remaining matches – losing is not an option for WOLVES, maybe for others but not us.
Remember – MM you will only be judged and remembered by the fans of the current situation so if you lose then you lose our support. Make too many mistakes then then I afraid the Board will blame you just as they do not want to take some of the slack.
So come Mr Moxey come out and put your around the MM and the team otherwise you might also end up playing for Moxley United with the rest of them – I am not joking!
Mr Morgan, I see in your eyes your are a fair just, trusting man and one likes to build excellent working links with all stake holders.
Well now is the time – come and show it!
MM needs your support, please come out and take the pressure off him – do not sack him but he does need more money to buy better players. Extra resources must be found as this gamble will pay off.
Just look at the history of Sir Alex, a Champion Manger, Team builder, and the Boss. If he was sacked early on in his career, where would Man U be? Who knows?
To me we must reamin in the PL with tears, blood and sweat – not mine but the players as they are paid bloody enough.
The Board need act now to show their 100% support for MM.
We all know we will be in a relegation fight come the end of the season so lets buy wisely and lets buy ourselves out of the bottom half of the table – just like other clubs do.
Sir Morgan (I can see it won’t be long for your Knighthood) as you have given the people of Wolverhampton and other good causes a massive input throughout your life.
Lets not have any more bad news.
God bless Wolverhampton.
God bless Wolves.
Amen

For the people on here that think that we can go with the line up on Sunday all season and stay up, you are deluded. Love or hate him, Henry has a big role still to play but not in every game. Better teams than Sunderland would rip us apart with Edwards and O’Hara central – especially with two wingers. That is why the likes of Frimpong would be very welcome in January.
There is no doubt that Mad Mick can be frustrating but at least he is honest and passionate about the club. He cannot also be blamed for the lack of money available and signings! Who knows, he may not survive? If this happens, we can only realistically go for the likes of Hughton! Let’s see but I don’t see O’Neill achieving much at Sunderland?

Mick is doing his best to repair the bridges he burnt with the fans at the moment. He saw the writing on the wall Sunday, and was probably as relieved as anyone by the comeback. So he is making hay with the fans while the sun shines.
Micks biggest problem is attracting / scouting talent, and then putting the extra quality into his team. Can he do this? I don’t think so based on his record so far. Hence the same championship players in the team, and his reluctance to play Fletcher (the top goal scorer). Is there a better manager for Wolves? Probably not at the moment, so more of the same for the forseeable future, especially if he betters the 40 point margin this season.
Can’t wait for the same old players, squeezed into whatever positions are available, playing not to lose the game. Thrills and spills, my a–e!

Congrats! You have a bigger following than most writers on this web.
At least you liven up the debate and whatever the result of this debate, the Wolves supporters will remain split with regard to McCarthy’s ability.
In my opinion he just about manages to be creditable but we will never reach the heights we all want as, with his record and our position in the league, he is unable to attract the quality players that will take us AND KEEP US in the top half of the table.
With this fact we can only hope that some of the young lads will break through in the next 18 months. That is if we are still in the Prem

People saying he is a Championship Manager. Well to be honest, he is doing a pretty good job at keeping the Wolves in the Premier League if that is all he is. Yes the ticket prices are too much, if you don’t want to pay them, dont go. Just stop moaning! Stop all the negative comments and get behind the team and the manager who is doing a fairly good job.

I’m delighted with the win against Sunderland and the three priceless points, but perspective is always useful.
If we had been on a winning streak of six or seven games and suddenly lost a couple no one would suggest the team was on the slide. The reverse holds good – we have had an awful run of games and a couple of wins against struggling opponents doesn’t alter the underlying problems.
By all means enjoy the moment, I certainly am doing, but I also recall the last match of last season, 0-3 at half time in a ‘must win’ game and also the moment before Sunderland missed the penalty last Sunday and 0-2 was staring everyone in the face in yet another ‘must win’ game. I fervently hope we stay in the Prem, just as we did after the Blackburn game, and also that ‘Lady Luck’ keeps smiling on us, but I respectfully suggest she might not if we keep courting her services too often.
It’s not a fluke that we are potential relegation candidates for the third year in a row, and I believe lessons must be learned if we aren’t to push our luck too far.
Take a look at the Championship teams and see how many have enjoyed top flight football in the past but can’t get back, we’ve been there and done that and there would be no fun in having another decade or two in, what for a team with Wolves’ history, is equivalent to the wilderness.
I’m hoping for a win on Saturday but nothing that happened against Sunderland suggests it is likely to happen. Still, I’ve gone for 1-1 with the bookies and only just resisted backing Wolves to win (at 10/1) maybe the way the teller laughed at me when I mulled it over helped to put me back in touch with the real world! :))

MM, first manager to take us to the premier league and keep us there now for a 3rd season.
This is the best start to any of our seasons in the premier league.
There can’t be any argument, Mick has brought us success, and we are improving.
What really is the problem?
I for one am proud of our “championship” manager and “championship” players taking on the might of the premier league and hanging in there by sheer grit and determination.
There are better “premiership” managers and players out there, who can match (but not better) our determination who have a lot more skill to call upon.
But the only way to get them in now would be to bankrupt the club or find an owner prepared to put SERIOUS investment into the club.
The alternative is to try and build up steadily with what we have, and that is what I see us doing. Unfortunately, there will be setbacks with this approach and a few nailbiting times before we can truly call ourselves established. If you find that unacceptable, the blame must be placed with Morgan, NOT McCarthy! He is just trying to work to Morgan’s mandate.
Some of you seem to think that a change of manager is all that is required to get us challenging for a champions league place!
Seriously, who are we going to attract to manage us better than MM with the finances Morgan is prepared to release at present?
Any appointment is a risk and destabilising. Until the club is in a position to move financially on to the next level, in Mick I trust!

I like Mick but I get ever so frustrated. I love his passion and irony. I think he handled himself really well when half the fans turned on him. To say he is tactically inept is wrong. 69 Silver Wolf. Yes we are potential relegation candidates. But so are any club from 8th (Stoke City) downwards. That is how the premier league is right now. Do you really think we should be one of the elite top 7 by now?

I’m in two minds about Mick’s assertion that Wolves have been “exciting and entertaining”. Yes indeed, the last few home games against Wigan, Swansea and Sunderland sure have been exciting -but only in a very tortured kind of way. It’s certainly doing my dodgy ticker no good, I can tell you! Much more of this and I’ll need a respirator!
I don’t think “exciting” applies to other games we’ve played, though. The QPR match stands out as an utter disaster and was hardly “exciting” -unless you’re Rangers fan, of course. And try telling Chelsea or Everton fans that we’re “anything but dull”, Mick. We were very poor and exceedingly dull in both games. Embarrassing, not exciting, methinks.
On balance, I’d rather we just won or drew more games in a boring, ground-out fashion. If nothing else, it might help my ticker!
Anyway, all the best to Mick and the boys. Just make sure it’s a show -not a ‘No Show’- at Old Trafford. That’ll make us proud, whatever the result may be. UTW!

73 teeswolf. The short answer is NO. I don’t see Wolves being a great power in the English game in the near future, possibly never again if the cheque book is allowed to continue buying success. It may be the future holds a different set of rules by which clubs are governed but until then teams like Wolves with gate receipts from circa 30,000 will have to play second fiddle (at best). There are plenty about, some languishing in the Championship and those clubs would love to swap places with Wolves, and I am happy about that, make no mistake.
However, we are in the Prem, and I have no wish to see it otherwise and my reservations are that, unlike yourself, I don’t see improvement on the field, in fact some of what has been offered up this year has been unbelievably poor. Certainly it isn’t improvement that would suggest this is the third year of enhanced Prem income and Prem experience. I believe even Jez Moxey has said they didn’t expect the team to be struggling in the way they have been doing, and lo and behold he suddenly finds a few bob behind the wardrobe for the January sales!
My fear is, if we keep playing around the relegation area, one day/season our luck will run out, and getting back may he a long haul.
For some people that scenario holds no fears, but for me it does and my posts reflect that.
As for MM I don’t think he’d get a job with any other Prem club, yet he may be for now just what Wolves management want. He’s prepared to go along on a shoestring budget and make the best of a bad job and what manager with an ounce of ambition would want that? I get the gut feeling that simply being in the Prem is the pinnacle of his ambitions, and he will happily stay in the lower quartile of the league forever, because he knows he couldn’t hack it higher up, and neither could his pal.
I don’t have anyone in mind to replace him, I simply feel he will surely take the club back to the Championship if he continues. Therefore, as I see things, management need to review their priorities and as part of the exercise consider if MM has the technical nous to take us forward should they they make more funds available for players. I for one don’t think he has, his supporters obviously do not agree.

77 sandown wolf. Honest injun, sandown wolf, it was on a printed sheet and as old as my eyes are I’m quite sure it was only 10/1. Problem is there’s only one bookie in the little town nearby and as I am not a gambler on a regular basis (Wolves excepted) I don’t look any further for my modest wagers.

@ 71 – SteveB. I am inclined to agree with you. The emphasis must lie with Steve Morgan and how much money he is prepared to make available for players and wages. It is because of this that I can see where Silver Wolf is coming from with his argument, although I do not agree with all his statements ref. Mick.

I am right cross that after just one desperate win the happy clappers think that we are in Europe next season.
Where does the Express and Star find them? Are they all grandchildren of Aynuk and Eli?
I am a Wolves supporter, have been for nearly 60 years, but not a McCarthy fan; he is just a temporary blip in the history of a great club. The happy clappers who worship him and tell the rest of us to leave the Wolves are just typical Aynuk’s.

I have just read Mad Mick’s latest interview comments. It just can’t be. He must be on a different planet – surely!?:
MM “Of course it’s wrong (to write games off) but I can understand people looking at the home games,” said the boss.
“Supporters tend to look past United and see two matches we should win.
“That’s not necessarily the truth, as we proved last season, and Stoke and Norwich will both be tough.
Hello!? Wasn’t it MM who wrote off the MU match last season and made 10 changes for the game because of the following week’s home match! Fans were infuriated. These type of comments beggar belief. As for the Stoke and Norwich comment – translation – I know they are home games but be prepared for a loss or two.

80 So Mick McCarthy’s shift is just a temporary blip in the history of a great club ?
Pray describe the previous 30 years of our great club then, mastermind.
Despite your sobriquet I suspect you could be one of the MIs who hounded out Terry Wharton and Stan Cullis.

80 – (Silver Wolf). An eloquent, concise post that expresses your concerns very clearly, my friend. In doing so, you’ve stated my own views almost to a tee.
Judging by the OTT, venomous posts, I think far too many fans on here make the big mistake of classifying their peers as simply being either ‘pro’ or ‘anti’ McCarthy. It seems you’re either with him or you aint, and you either ‘love’ him or you ‘hate’ him -with no middle ground whatsoever. Actually, there is such middle ground -and I should know, because I’m occupying it. Your bile-free post indicates that you do, too. Trust me, it’s the best place to be, mate, if you want to see things in an unbiased, fair-minded fashion with no axe to grind -but just remember to wear your tin helmet at all times and keep your head down in the trenches. Dodging bullets from those two, warring factions can be an occupational hazard! ;-)

88 Ye Olde South Bank – Cheers. Like you I hate the mud slinging venomous posts you refer to, in fact the moment I see any such language I skip to the next post as fast as I can in the hope it is free of bile. We all want a good future for Wolves and it’s in how we might achieve that the differences emerge.
I don’t have a tin helmet, but as a reminder of the days when I worked for a large building & civil engineering company based at The Wergs, Sir Alfred McAlpine no less, I do have a yellow safety helmet. It kept me safe from all manner of flying objects and even provided a home for a family of House Martins a few years ago!!
I’ll have it at the ready! ;-)
