Wolves have failed in a cheeky loan request for Sunderland midfielder Craig Gardner in the lead-up to tomorrow’s clash between the clubs.

Gardner is said to have become homesick after choosing Wearside ahead of Wolverhampton in the summer, and has made just five Premier League starts, plus a further three appearances as substitute.

It’s understood Wolves have already asked about taking the 25-year-old back to the West Midlands in January but Sunderland have so far refused.

That stance may change, if, as expected, Martin O’Neill takes over as the Black Cats’ new boss next week – O’Neill sold Gardner from Villa to Birmingham in January 2010.

Wolves and Sunderland agreed a £4.5m fee with Blues for the Gardner in the summer, but the ex-England Under-21 international chose the north east because the Black Cats offered higher wages.

But boss Mick McCarthy, who was interested in Gardner at Villa, still covets the player.
