Stephen Ward demands another super Sunday

Wolves’ man of the moment Stephen Ward today urged the Molineux masses to recreate ‘the Wigan experience’ to help the players shoot down Sunderland this Sunday.

Ward is well aware the home ground is again likely to be full of anxiety this weekend with boss Mick McCarthy under pressure after eight defeats in 10 games.
Black Cats Steve Bruce is also feeling the strain after fans chanted for his head after their 2-1 weekend defeat to Wigan.

But early Player of the Year contender Ward is convinced that if the fans back the team like they did in the 3-1 win against Wigan in their last appearance at Molineux, Wolves will be on their way to better things.

“It’s important we all stick together,” said the Ireland international. “A lot of people saw how close the fans are and what a rapport they have with us as a group throughout that Wigan game especially, when the chips were down.

“Even when they scored, the crowd lifted us again, so it’s important that we’re all in it for the same reason, which is to stay in the Premier League. That’s been the case since I’ve been here and since we’ve got promoted, and hopefully we can do a similar job to what we done last season.”

Victory for Bolton at Tottenham on Saturday would put fourth bottom Wolves – who are two places and two points better off than last campaign – in the drop zone for the first time this season.

Ward believes Wolves shouldn’t be fighting a relegation battle again but insists the players must improve. “We believe we’ve strengthened enough to make sure we’re not in that situation, but it’s up to us as a group of players to do it,” he said. “We’ve got a group of players that can move us up the table.”

Ward believes the players must do better for McCarthy, rather than the other way round. “There’s only so much the gaffer can do, and it’s when we cross that white line we need to be better and pick up more points than we’ve done recently,” he said.

And Ward insisted the players feel the frustration as much as the fans during the current run.

“People tend to show their frustration in this day and age, but there’s no one more frustrated than us and the manager when things don’t go well,” he added.

First – you get paid, we pay. Second – we don’t cause the frustration, you and the manager do. But most importantly, we can do sweet fanny adams to change things. You and the manager can. It’s just a shame that at the moment, courtesy of MM possessing the tactical nous of a box jellyfish and the PR skills of Bob Crow, we are expected to pay to endure dross whilst MM thinks that by drawing the second half with one shot when losing 3-0 “at least gave the fans something to cheer about”.

    #5 wolfy in disguise,

No, you got me all wrong mate! I’m not happy with our position and the way the team is performing at the moment. The point i’m trying to make is that the negativity will play a big part in our results! I want us to win but deep down I know some fans would rather we loose to get rid of mick… very dangerous! I just want a good atmosphere and the fans to play their part. I’m sick of reading the negative crap written on here at every opporunity given to them. They will find a negative no matter what! I’m puzzled by some tactics made during games and player positions etc… but I trust the man in charge to keep us up another year! What exactly is sacking the manager going to acheive? who is good enough to replace him thats available and would want to?

So i’m not single sighted and aswell matey I get out enough… maybe because of how much I get out is the reason why I’m so positive and not working my self up into a ball of negativity in my little woe is me cave most of the numpties dwell in!

Hear that Steve Bruce is on the ropes fighting for his job which is where muppet McCarthy should be at Wolverhampton

The reason he is not on the mat like Bruce is that our Owner unlike Sunderland’s, does not wish to get involved, and does not wish to be seen as the bad guy !!!!
The frightening thing is that it may take a Wolves relegation for him to wake up and show some passion.

“victory of Bolton at Spurs would put Wolves in the bottom three” – anyone fancy a wager on this?

The sensible bit is that a big part of the reason we beat Wigan was the crowd who remained positive throughout. It made me believe that this site is not representative of Wolves fans – as several on here had been hoping for a defeat!

Go back 5 years (or 10,15,20,25) and ask yourself if you would have accepted (or bitten someone’s hand of) this – 4th from bottom of the prem.

The one bright hope for Sunday is that he plays O’HARA. MILIJAS. and GUEDIOURA in mid-field and we might try going forward and not back and sideways with HENRY out the team.
Next get CRADDOCK in alongside JOHNSON to give him a bit of confidence.
Stop playing WARD anywhere else but left back because he is the best of a bad bunch.Start with FORDE at RB because we have no one else, STEARMAN is not good enough.
DOYLE and FLETCHER upfront with JARVIS wide.
At least we might see some football and not just hoofing the ball upfield and being constantly under seige.
The real answer though is to bring in a new manager and coaching staff.

It is true that many Wolves fans are supportive of the team where it matters – during a game. The ‘numpty’s are a minority and attract far too much attention and let’s face it, they are an embarrassment.

However all Wolves fans must be feel intense disappointment at the current state of the team and in some of Mick’s decisions and comments.

Morgan really must insist that the team shows significant improvement. Losing to QPR, the debacle against Swansea, the nature of the Everton loss all point to us still not being truly competitive. If this goes on then Morgan must review the current management and make the change before the transfer window and before Martin O’Neil gets employed.

“And there’s only so much the manager can do” – perhaps picking our best side, promoting positivity and attacking play, coaching how to mark the opposition instead of continually standing off might be a start??
I want us to survive and support the team all the way, but we’re deep in the mire. I’ve said previously that our next three home games will shape our season – Sunderland, Stoke and Norwich. It has to be 7 points minimum in my view, particularly given the away fixtures we have……..

You know, there’s nothing quite as healthy as letting off a bit of steam on these pages. It’s medicinal and to be encouraged. When it comes to matchday though, it’s time to put aside your grievances and give the team 100% backing. That’s why we’re there, after all.

If things go well…then great, we achieved it together as one. If things go t*ts up, then neither the boss nor the players can hold us responsible. They alone would take responsibility. Again, there’d be no place to hide.

So, give Wardy what he asks, lads. In return, I ask that they -to a man- just for once earn their fat, overinflated salaries and give us long-suffering fans something to finally crow about considering what it costs to watch them.

Stephen Ward has made improvements to his game, that goes without saying but I think players should not comment too much if at all as they wil be shot down in flames as the team is dire and cannot compete strongly enough at this level. Most of the squad are championship sadly and that shows glaringly of what Moxey and MM are all about!
We need not only a good quality prem manager but also someone who is football inside out who can purchase good players and take us forward. Moxey and MM cannot and will not do this, end of!
We are owed some success after the amount of hard earned money we have pumped into this club week in week out!
Sing and chant for change on Sunday also the protest is gathering pace.
It is desperate times for fans of this club, imho, we have a great past but we cannot dwell on this all the while. It is the here and now and the future that is all important. Fans forum is a laugh; it’s just a facade like the house of commons!
In January if we bring in good quality players with prem experience and finish in a half decent position then next season and the new ground will be a place to be!

There is now doubt that we have to do something to halt this slide. I’m not sure though that sacking the manager is the only answer. There have been lots of posts championing Martin O’Neil and Mark Hughes but, let’s be serious, these two are not options. O’Neil spent £100m at Villa and then walked out when the money dried up and Hughes publicly stated that he left Fulham because they could not match his ambitions. If they can’t we can’t!
Maybe what we need is for Mick to swallow his pride and admit that he needs assistance. A new face with new ideas on the coaching staff might just do the trick. It would also be a way out for Steve Morgan who, for me, is too close to McCarthy and will do everything to avoid sacking ‘his friend’.

We are struggling this season for two reasons:-

    i) Not signing anywhere near enough players. We have a squad of 24 and 3 of these are out on loan and may not be good enough. Of the other 21 players, there are at least 6 that have injury problems – Craddock, Zubar, SEB, Fletcher, Foley and Edwards!
ii) Of the barebone squad we have left, Mad Mick picks the wrong personnel. For example, players like Hammill and Doherty, should have been played more this season.

People on here who are slagging off Ward and calling him poor, obviously never go to games or are very blinkered. Only Hennessey and Ward have been consistent this season and that is reflected by the various newspaper reporters marks and reflections of games.
Someone has compared Bruce’s situation to Mad Mick’s? Totally different, as Bruce has signed a whole team – O’Shea, Brown, Gardner, Ferguson etc.

Correction: The ground will be ‘half-full’ of anxiety. As a Young Wolf my son is entitled to a ‘free’ ticket but after we’ve way we played in the last 2 games I won’t be making a trip to Molineux just to watch us cheer up yet another set of opposing fans. With the game being live on TV I suspect we’ll be lucky if all our season ticket holders turn up!

Last season we picked up most of our points when Henry was missing. Let’s hope we can reap the benefits of the enforced change on Sunday and, if so, lets hope EVERYONE recognises it this time. Also, I know we didn’t stand much of a chance against Chelsea but sticking Ward in midfield ahead of Hammill makes no sense to me. When did Ward ever have a decent game on the wing? To win games we need flair alongside industry. With Jarvis out of form we need the flair to come from somewhere else. I hope we give Forde or Hammill a start alongside Hunt, O’Hara and Edwards and I hope Fletch starts and gets some service for a change.

Sometimes I think professional football forgets it’s part of the entertainment industry. I find Wolves fans to be incredibly forgiving of defeat so long as we’re entertained!

I’ve always been able to see the vigour and verve of all Micks teams at Wolves, and been proud of how their never say die spirit runs through the team. I’ve always had a confidence in Mick and his young squad and stuck by the team no matter how tempting its been to join in with Micks critics.

I can’t say that anymore, I am bewildered at how poor they are so far this season.

The final game against Blackburn woke me up to how vunerable Wolves are.

I would honestly say we are the poorest team in the Premiership judging on 90percent of the performances i’ve seen this season.

My heart sank when i heard O’Neil was favourite to take Bruce’s job if sacked at Sunderland, thats how worried I am.

Im not going to shout ‘Get Mick out’ i will always respect him and praise everything he has done, he deserves a bit of respect or else we would still be watching Championship football for sure.

A witch-hunt solves nothing, but what I will say is, that if we don’t win this weekend, we have will have to do something to save the season or else we are down, end of.

I want to see the boards true intent, they are ultimately the people who run this club and it is their actions that will make Wolves either great, average or indeed a poor team.

Having paid nought for the club (well ten pounds then!) and seemingly more interested in keeping builders in work, the cynics amongst us could question how much commitment SM has compared to the financial risk he has taken. The Barnsley Brawler is safe as long as there are three worse teams/managers in the division, fortunately there were last season and could well be this season. He has invested in players who have not performed and other comments are quite correct in stating that our best players are not world beaters, just the best of a poor bunch. Mick is probably as good as we’ll get with the current club ambition; we certainly won’t improve if we bring in Strachan or the like. I fear that this is it, and your choice is Hobson’s “take it or leave it”. I for one will admit that I am sick to the back teeth of getting turned over, week in, week out for our third season with very little hope of any change. Oddly enough, I disagree with other posters; I think it’s more fun to win in the Championship with a Championship side than it is to regularly get thrashed in the Premiership with a Championship side. I have never constantly re-invested in poor product or service in my life and feel a complete fool for doing so at Wolves. The Manager and Chief Executive appear to believe that they can say what they like, when they like to fans and we have to accept it’s meant for other numpties, fools, moaners, idiots etc, but not directed at us.
Our manager was a half decent defender, but he’s never assembled a Wolves side that can defend; our mid-fielders are incapable of passing to our own players and our strikers are shot shy failures. Change the Brawler by all means, but only if it for some-one better, not the run of the mill Joe-averages we normally end up with.

I actually like him. I’ve seen him many times throw himself in front of a player and his effort I would never ever question.

However as a defender, he’s just not good enough. He gives the opposition too much space and is frequently out of position.

Compared to last year, he’s massively better, but, he’s not premier league quality.

    That’s not his fault, that’s MM’s.

The problem they and we have is the Manager who doesn’t know what to do about our tactics, selection, substitutions, and how talk to the fans.

His statement after the Chelsea game was “he wouldn’t do anything different” he wanted to give the fans something to cheer about, great what about trying to win games instead of the stupid one up front.

I recall nearly dropping off to sleep on a few occasions!

The molineux used to shake with atmosphere, Id like to personally thank Mick Mccarthy for bleeding dry all the fun and entertainment out of matchdays with his amateur negative drivel!

I cannot attend on Sunday, and heres a note to Moxey & Morgan, i have noe offered my tickets to numerous friends and family, free of charge and guess, what!!! no takers!! these are fans who used to attend games with myself but will not step back into the stadium until MM & Clipboard are gone!!

You cant pin that on the recession & pubs moxey, but you can pin it on the dire quality of football this man has us playing!

Extremely gratefull for what he has done but enough is enough!!!

MM stated more than once, at the start of our third season in the top flight, that he was happy with his squad. And yet once again we appear to be facing the likelihood of another prolonged battle against relegation. The table doesn’t lie and our teams’s appalling record this season needs some explaining. I have been pondering three possibilities…

    1) If our squad really IS good enough for the job then MM has to explain why he fails to get them playing to their ability.

    2) If the squad are simply NOT good enough overall then MM has to take the can for his over-estimation of their abilities (ie poor judgement in buying/keeping them)

    3) If MM secretly knew the squad was not good enough but kept quiet because there was no more money available to him in July/August and he didn’t want to undermine the current squad’s confidence, then the situation is far worse than I feared.

I have been a solid supporter of MM until this season, but I no longer have faith in is judgement, or his ability to take the club forward.

FACT ! – Morgan as no interest whatsoever in Wolves as a FOOTBALL TEAM, his interest is as the owner of Molineux STADIUM and buildings – things he can make money from in corporate investment and future sell-on. I firmly believe that he won’t be that bothered if (or rather ‘when’) we do get relegated. The club will receive parachute money without him having to spend a penny on the team. See how much he does spend in January to keep us alive! There’s also the fact that no-body of any standing will come here in the position that we will be in and with McCarthy as the manager. That too will play into Morgan’s hands with McCarthy trotting out the all-to-familiar line that “we were in for this person but he chose some other team” or ” he wanted too much money” – all excuses for the fact that they never realistically tried to get them. Sir Jack, for all his failings would never have kept McCarthy here this long or gone for as long without saying anything. Morgan as the “owner” of Wolves is a joke!

Wardy is having a great season. If all our players had improved over the summer as much has he did we would be in a much better position. What confuses me (well, one of the things that confuse me) is that Ward, along with Doyle play much better for Ireland than they do for Wolves. Same as Edwards and Vokes (a revelation against Norway) do for Wales. Why is that? You can say they are playing for the shirt but they should be doing that every weekend. The only other thing that is different is the manager. It’s not difficult to work out, is it? As for the booking fee, it is a rip off. The charge should be consistent with the cost to the club. As a general rule that would be around 2% on a credit card and 50p on a debit card. A top price ticket (£40) would cost the club about 85p to process anything over this is profit.

Now, Im not sure if Stearman is fit, but he has played as a holding midfielder before (albeit for Leicester) and I think that neither Guedioura or Milijas can do that job for the team. I like Guedioura but I think he lacks the positional discipline to play the holding role.

Personally, I always thought that we needed another defensive midfielder to provide Henry with competition, but since we did not act in the summer, I think that Stears could do a job (and is less of a liability than when in defence!!!!!!!!)

He can only get effort or a “shift” out of these players, we have many talented players but their talent is being strangled by the manager and his coaching staff the same will happen with the young players coming through.

    11. your obviously not a real fan as you would know Forde is not a defender, the lads a winger so playing him at RB would put you in the same bracket as MM.

    63. Stearman a holding midfielder? i would’nt trust him to hold my beer, yes he can tackle but most of time he is rash and late so would be a liability. He’s not the best passer of the ball either so would keep putting us under pressure.

Ward believes the players must do better for McCarthy, rather than the other way round: “There’s only so much the gaffer can do, and it’s when we cross that white line we need to be better and pick up more points than we’ve done recently”. Yes you do need to pick up more points duh! BUT the manager could do better. For a start, he could play players who should be playing (e.g., Hammill, Vokes) rather than his favourites. Second, he could play players in their correct positions. Third, he could stop tinkering around and make minimal changes (i.e., 1 instead of 4 last week). Fourth, he could stop moving people around during matches (for example you (Ward) played in four different positions last week). Fifth, he could employ better tactics. Sixth, he could manage his substitutions better (and make them earlier). Oh and seventh, he could make way for change!

48 – I’ll try to take that feedback in the spirit in which I hope it was intended. But if you want to debate the role of the ‘supporter’ I think that’s an interesting topic for discussion. The traditional football supporter turned up to cheer on their peers. It was a reciprocal arrangement and the investment was primarily emotional. At some point the TV execs and marketing men recognised there was a captive audience with so much emotional investment in a product that they were just waiting to be fleeced. They spotted a market with seemingly limitless price elasticity. Based on the ‘product’ currently on offer, we’ve exceeded my price ceiling. I doubt it’s just mine. I reckon we’re witnessing the last days of ‘elite’ football for the masses, which will end up being ‘World Series Soccer’ on late night pay-per-view. Whilst they’re refurbishing the (no doubt soon to be renamed) Molineux they might as well put a huge pane of glass on the front of each stand and turn the whole stadium into one almighty over-priced box of corporate hospitality. I think the AFC Wimbledon model is the future. Their club was stolen from them and they started again from scratch and not for the glory but for the love of the game and to fight for a prize they might actually be able to win and be able to take some pride in. I take no pride in paying over my hard-earned cash to subsidise the salaries of over-paid also rans who are trying and failing to compete with loss-making ventures bank-rolled by billionnaires. I take no pleasure whatsoever in watching us whimper to defeat with loads of endeavour, very little talent and barely so much as a shot on target. So no danger of us defecting to the top of the Premier League but maybe to the non-league. Blimey. Apparently I needed to get that off my chest. UTW.

Funny, we weren’t numpties then, odd?!!! Mr. Morgan, grow some and make a change or we’ll be back in the fizzy pop lge before u can blink. We want passion and to see football played properly. We are flirting around the familiar relegation zone yet again. The reality is that the team is constantly punching above their weight, desperately treading water in a fast-paced, competitive league where everyone/everything is bigger, faster, stronger, more expensive, more flair…

What are the ambitions of Morgan? He’s expanding the stadium capacity which suggests that he’s taking the long term view of surviving in the Premier League. Yet, there is no real statement of intent to strengthen the team and reform it to a Premier League calibre side. Instead, the same players who came through from the Championship and the so-called record signings who were plucked from other relegated teams are the backbone of the team. Yes, these players are to be commended for their hard work, endeavour and graft, but with the manager’s philosophy of compromising quality for substance, the team will always struggle and mistakes will tend to be magnified and costly.

Last year, heroic performances against Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool were the key to keeping us up as we struggled against teams around us.

This year, those heroic performances will not be replicated. On the flip side, we worryingly continue to struggle to beat the teams around us.

Let us recognise that each player is giving the maximum of his ability every week, even when results are poor. To this end, they really need the full support of the fans. This is currently the team we have to work with and it’s not their fault that the club hasn’t done enough to strengthen them and add more quality. We are actually lucky to be in the Premier League for the 3rd consecutive season despite all the limitations and lack of resources/investment. These lads who give blood, sweat and tears out on the pitch need the extra push and motivation from the fans for this is where they would rather be and this is where we want them to be, performing at the highest level.

As for Morgan, I remember clearly his red face as if he’d been to hell and back when we made the great escape from the dreaded relegation end of last season. I thought then: surely you don’t want to go through that again?

In which case if the other M’s are more culpable than he is for the parlous state of the playing squad, it makes it difficult for the board to get rid of the least guilty of the trio.
I just wish MM would adopt a footballing approach and not ‘hoof and chase’. Hhhmmm…we’ve got fans split on Stephen Ward, Mick McCarthy and, now it seems, Steve Morgan, too. I doubt we fans could agree on anything, collectively.

Where Morgan’s concerned, posts of recent weeks makes for interesting reading. Some feel he’s a just a builder at heart so is only here to ‘make a quick buck’ when the chance arises. However, others feel he’s building firm foundations for the future (in every sense) and is therefore obviously committed to Wolves. In fairness, I see merit in both arguments -and that’s probably why I feel so damned undecided about Morgan, at times!

Common sense dictates that Molineux’s expansion and the new training ground facilities (both costing multi-millions)are indicative of a guy with grand, long-term vision and intent. On the other hand, he seemingly has a blind spot where McCarthy’s performance as Manager is concerned. Mick’s leadership will almost certainly take us down (unless we get really lucky for a second time), yet Morgan publicly shows not one ounce of concern. Surely that’s at odds for an owner intent on ‘progress’? It isn’t good PR, for sure. Steve’s silence is deafening, especially so considering that he didn’t miss the opportunity to grab a microphone after the Blackburn game. He wasn’t so shy then, even if he is now. Question is, for how much longer will he hold his silence? Flop against Sunderland and he really should make his feelings known.

I caught a bit of Moxey talking on radio, last week. He said that Wolves aimed to be in the Premier League for “The medium and long-term”. No mention of ‘short term’ (unless, in fairness to Jez, the full interview said otherwise). Perhaps relegation is an acceptable option, then? If so, that’s a highly risky policy. Mind you, it would confirm Mick as Manager for the next 25 years -but we already knew that ;-)

So, deep at heart, I’m undecided about Steve Morgan and where Wolves are heading. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt for the moment though, partly because I want to believe that he really has converted from Red to Gold & Black blood and loves this club as I do. Fancy new stands are great, but it’s on-field where it matters most. Get that right and the rest will follow. As it is, you can’t help but feel we’re getting things back-to-front when the only new face is Johnson.

Sir Jack wore his heart on his sleeve and said exactly what he felt -there was never a dull moment, bless him! I just wish Morgan had a bit more ‘connection’ with the Wolves public, just like old Jack did. It’s not helping Steve’s image in the fans’ eyes -it’s hindering it. I’m surprised such a smart businessman hasn’t yet worked that out.

maltawolf, appreciate your reply, personally agree with you that mcarthy is not premier league level manager,

but unless morgan or another investor is prepared to put in 40 million for new premier league quality players,no manager of any quality will come to wwfc. sad but true. utw

Hi Malta – surely you don’t need to leave paradise to go on holiday. I am heavily outnumbered again on here – just as I was last year and the year before. Things are disappointing, but they’ve been worse even in the last two years! If we don’t take 6 points from the next 3 home games then I will start worrying properly.

PS bit harsh to compare you with Eire and streako, getsomein I thought – at least you can string a sentence together and don’t type with your knuckles!

So Steve Bruce has been sacked by Sunderland, talk about taking decisive action before the rot really sets in – that’s what should have happened at Wolves 2 seasons ago, yet even now, McCarthy keeps his job. There’s no justice.

    106. While I think Mick has gone as afar as he can with us I find your type of post baffling

Justice? Mick has kept us for a third straight season, what are you talking about ‘justice’

If Mick had spent the type of money that round face up at Sunderland had he probably would of been sacked ages ago.

Don’t let the facts ever get in the way tho eh?

Latest Blog — Same again for West Brom

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
