Wolves right-back Richard Stearman could be fit for the clash against Sunderland in nine days’ time – after initially being ruled out for four weeks with a broken wrist.
Manager Mick McCarthy has revealed the 24-year-old could play with a lightweight cast to protect the injury.
The versatile defender underwent surgery on Monday to have a metal plate inserted to strengthen the joint after falling awkwardly in the 2-1 loss at Everton.
McCarthy said: “He’s going to have a carbon fibre cast put on it and, if it’s something he can play with, it will be sooner rather than later.
“He might be training next week with the youngsters.”
Stearman’s replacement for tomorrow’s game at Chelsea, Ronald Zubar, is expected to be fit for his first competitive game since February.
That’s despite suffering an ankle injury on his comeback against Arsenal reserves on Tuesday which forced him to sit out training yesterday.
McCarthy said: “Zubar rocked his ankle in the reserve game but he should be fit.
“He played the rest of the first half but came off more as a precaution, so I’m hoping he will be OK.”
