Defensive game won’t win for Wolves
Friday 25th November 2011, 9:30AM GMT.
Wolves blogger Tim Spiers can’t see how the Everton approach will gain anything at Chelsea as he urges manager Mick McCarthy to ‘go for it’ at Stamford Bridge.
For a man renowned for telling it like it is and calling a spade a spade, Mick McCarthy seemed to be watching an entirely different match to most Wolves supporters last weekend.
The manager declared himself “delighted” with our 2-1 defeat to Everton, a team which had previously lost five of its previous six Premier League games.
The majority of Wolves fans saw the game very differently, with words such as ‘rubbish,’ ‘second best’ and ‘negative’ frequently bandied about on forums and message boards.
Now we all know what McCarthy thinks of people who dare to air their opinion on websites but, if he’s not careful, the manager will even risk alienating some non-numpties as well with statements like these.
Mick also said: “The gameplan worked at Everton, everything was fine.” And how about: “You sometimes have to sacrifice things to make sure you’re solid and we were, because we restricted Everton to very few chances.”
Well aside from the two Everton goals, Louis Saha should arguably have scored in the first-half, Tim Cahill somehow found Stephen Ward’s legs rather than the back of the net in the second, while the Aussie could have won a penalty when Karl Henry appeared to prevent him from shooting in the box.
At the other end, though, there were no ifs, buts and maybes for us. We had one shot on target and scored one goal, so basically we got what we deserved.
I appreciate where the manager is coming from in that on the whole, a couple of mistakes from Roger Johnson and George Elokobi aside, it was a pretty solid defensive performance, albeit against very modest opposition.
And, as usual, the work rate of the players couldn’t be questioned in the slightest. But if he’s delighted with having one shot on target and 39 per cent possession of the ball, then we might as well all go home.
There’s defending your team in public and then there’s antagonising your own supporters, who have spent an awful lot of money they can’t afford watching you have one shot on target.
Because, like Mick usually does, Wolves fans tend to call a spade a spade as well and one thing we won’t stomach is suger-coating something or trying to pull the wool over our eyes.
That’s why – newsflash – chief executive Jez Moxey always has and always will be unpopular with the majority of Wolves supporters.
Tactics-wise, if we were playing Manchester United, Tottenham or Arsenal, then a more cautious approach would have been completely justified.
But Everton were there for the taking, on a bad run of form and with just one home victory to their name this season.
Instead of testing their undoubted fragility, we sat back, soaked up pressure and tried in vain to hit the Toffees on the break.
Not only did Tim Howard have absolutely nothing to even attempt to save, bar the penalty, but the Everton goalkeeper barely had to deal with any crosses, normally a strength of ours.
Indeed, until recently at least, we topped the charts for putting more crosses into the box than any other Premier League side.
But with Matt Jarvis left to stew on the bench and Adam Hammill not even selected in the match-day squad, there was a real lack of pace down the flanks and this rendered counter attacking very difficult.
And as for Steven Fletcher’s snub, don’t even get me started. Our most prolific goalscorer by some distance, as well as arguably our most skilful player, Fletcher was given just four token minutes to make an impact.
The Scot must be the first name on McCarthy’s team sheet no matter what the formation or tactics utilised but, instead, Kevin Doyle was given the thankless task of trying to lead the line on his own with very little support.
So, after all, that you might expect Mick to change tack for this Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.
After all, if we can’t earn a point by playing a containing game at Everton, who before the match were below us in the league table, then what chance would we have at Chelsea?
But no, pre-empting our tactics from comments made by McCarthy this week, it seems we should expect another afternoon of trying to stifle the opposition.
Apparently 4-5-1 is here to stay too – potentially bad news for Fletcher – with McCarthy saying we are “harder to beat” with an extra man in midfield.
I’m not talking about taking a cavalier approach here, but how many games have we parked the bus and held out for a point or a win away from home?
Our best performances often come when we are bold, dynamic and take the game to the opposition, with Manchester City and – pertinently – Chelsea away last season two great examples of this.
Yes we lost them both, but it’s far better to lose heroically and by giving it a real go, rather than defending for 90 minutes and then conceding an inevitable late goal.
The latter option will just not be stomached unless, like with Birmingham in 2009-10 for example, it’s effective. A containing, negative approach will only work if the foundations are solid.
I didn’t see Swansea or Queens Park Rangers coming to Molineux to play for a point, just like I didn’t see us go to Blackburn and let them take the initiative.
Believe it or not, we possess great quality going forward with Doyle, Fletcher, Jarvis, Hammill, Stephen Hunt, Jamie O’Hara, Adlene Guedioura and Michael Kightly all players who can terrorise defenders.
You make your own luck and your own opportunities in this game and taking the reins off could see the team start to fulfil its undoubted potential.
If we don’t start playing to our strengths soon, then we’re just going to get sucked into yet another relegation scrap, if we aren’t in one already.

We cannot defend for toffee and do you remember the formation we played when we lost 5 in a row -442. Also Kightly and Stephen Hunt – great quality?? You are deluded!!We have to pack the midfield because we lack defensive quality also have no mobility or cover from Henry and O’Hara. Jarvis should be playing in a 451 and maybe shift Doyle to wide right and have Fletcher down the middle.

Chelsea last season we played 451 with no Karl Henry. You have defeated your own argument.

A very good and truthful piece. As a few ex-Wolves players and a few pundits have said, Wolves play to not lose. They don’t play to win. As such, when we inevitably go a goal behind, there is no plan B, only blind panic.
Wolves are so very predictable, the lack of imagination and flair are obvious for all to see. Our only limited success seems to be set-pieces which, when all said and done, is in short supply.
All the regular starters are so predictable, giving the opposition an easy opportunity to contain us. The only players with flair, imagination and unpredictability very rarely get a look in. Probably because others in the team have a distinct lack of reading a game or anticipating movement.
What they do on the training ground is beyond me, it can only be fitness and set pieces. Defending and attacking cannot be part of it it seems.

Just an external observation:
Didn’t, having stayed up the year before last playing 4-5-1, Mick start last season with a more expansive 4-4-2, pick up a couple of results very early on and then fall into decline around October, November? Before reverting to being difficult to beat and arresting the slump?
Are we not seeing the same pattern being played out this season?
The more cautious or defensive approach is working though. Look what happened when we were a bit more cavalier in our game plan at the start of the season. It clearly had to be changed.
Now we have rightly tried to play more reservedly, again the results speak for themselves. I lose count of the number of clean sheets and wins we have been able to record in the last nine games or so.
Up the Wolves and long may the high level of entertainment continue.

it,s all Morgan,s fault, he allows mick to do the negative things that is slowly but surely heading us towards the division which we deserve to be in, with this boring style of play, that mick serves us week after week, never mind he drop in the gates at the wolves, the pub,s are half empty on saturday afternoons, as every wolves game is so predictable now, Mr,Morgan sort it or Abort it………………

I think Mick has got shares in a few pubs with the Wolves games being screened as he is doing his best to deter anyone from going away anymore.
I used to love travelling away but i am not going to pay upwards of £100 per match to watch that utter dross we serve up.
Steven Fletcher would get in most orther teams and if Mick is not careful he will start to become frustrated.
Ifear an absolute hammering tomorrow!

4-5-1 does not need to be a defensive system.
If we played Doyle or Fletcher on the right of the midfield with Jarvis on the left leaving Henry, Edwards and Guedioura in the middle, you have a team with 4 attack minded players plus Henry. I would play Doyle on the right and Fletcher up front, Doyle may not score goals but he he will put a shift in!!
With Ward and Zubar also capable of getting forward we should be able to ask a few questions of a shaky Chelsea team.
I don’t agree Fletcher was snubbed, he had a muscle injury and last season showed that he takes time to recover.

“But if he’s delighted with having one shot on target and 39 per cent possession of the ball, then we might as well all go home.”
Spot on, the previous games last two seasons we had a go at Everton came away with a point. Danny Murphy on commentary during the spurs and Villa game was talking about how you can’t go ultra defensive against these top sides which villa did and lost the game 2 – 0, the better sides will just pick us off like Chelsea will do and what Man City did, for confidence the players might take more away from these type of games if we do have a go at the big boys still lose I suspect but who knows? Mick can’t be thinking about going for a draw when we play Sunderland surely?
You describe exactly want everyone is trying to say. I think it’s gone beyond jumping on the get Mick out bandwagon. It’s no longer just a minority of Mick haters saying these things. Everyone has started to pick up on the negative tactics we are using week after week.
Sitting back and hoping to sneak in a an early goal, late late substitutions, leaving first team players on the bench in order for them to come on as impact players later on, lone strikers. Its gone back to the McGhee era when Keano was upfont on his own because we had no one else. Difference is we do have other strikers and attacking mid fielders.
Might have thought we would sit back against Everton 2 seasons ago when we first got promoted and we didn’t even do that.
I can tell Mick where to stick his mid table finish. If we were really serious about finishing mid table then we would not have gone to Everton playing 451. Mid table means we need to comfortably be beating teams like Everton, Newcastle, Villa and QPR and quite clearly Mick hasn’t got the confidence in his team to do that.
If it carries on like this I’m selling my season ticket in January. There are more important things in my life that I need that money for.

Partly agree with the article.
I am an admirer of Mick McCarthy and think he is still the best manager to be in charge. However, I really could not understand how he could come out with a comment that he was delighted with the performance against Everton. It was such a poor match that I don’t think even David Moyes could be all that delighted with their perfomance – and they won.
I still believe that playing 4-5-1 against the top teams is the right approach, especially away from home. Unfortunately, both Milijas or Guedioura do not seem to be able make a significant impact when they are selected to start a game.
It looks like there will at least one change with Zubar replacing Stearman. I would be surprised if there are any further changes at the start of the match, but at some point I would like to see Fletcher coming on as he seems to be the only striker who can score goals for us.

We could argue the toss all day about formations and players, but the fact is that Mick has lost the plot.. Fans have lost faith in him, and he has lost his way.. When managers start doing nonsensical stuff week in week out, you know the writing is on the wall.. The odd things is that when we are doing well, most of us would pick a similar team.. Mick just does the opposite most weeks now to what any supporter would do. Most of us might not have played professional football, but you do get used to a standard of play.. We can see its all down to Mick’s tactics, I will not blame the players.. It is Mick who picks the team.

Garbage. Fletch was not fully match fit and he was on the bench for the fantastic 3-1 win over Wigan.
Now he is fit, Fletch and Doyle do justify a 442 but not against top6 opposition.
We were minutes away from a valuable point…

I completely agree with your point about being defensive against big sides. Eventually they will break you down.
For years teams have been going to Old Trafford and sitting deep with men behind the ball. Who in the history of time has gone there and nicked a 1-0???!!
That’s not to say open the game up, but you must have an outlet and a plan to hurt them too.
Sir Billy Quiet
“4-5-1 does not need to be a defensive system”- spot on. Sorry to use this example, but Albion played 4-5-1 all last season and were something like 6th highest scorers in the division.

Excellent blog.
Nobody expects Wolves to try and go toe to toe with Chelsea away, but there is a difference between being cautious and negative. You cannot go into matches simply with the intention of trying to stop the opposition scoring, you need to carry an attacking threat too. But MM only seems able to set Wolves up to play a stifling game, not a counter attacking game.
With Chelsea being so jittery in defence right now, a more positive approach may well bring dividends. All such comments will do is give Chelsea confidence.
I would be delighted if MM is calling everyone’s bluff and surprises us to-morrow, but I doubt it.

I miss my beloved Wolves having a go at any opposition we play. Win, lose or draw we expect fight, committment, passion and dare I say it a degree of flair…………
The mindset is to defend from start to finish it would seem. A shame and we will only lose fans the more this continues. Its not great to watch.

Gotta say I agree with every word Tim. I watched the highlights of Swansea at Old Trafford. They had a right go at them and deserved something from the game. QPR went to Chelsea and attacked them. Ok that was a local derby and QPR have bought some good players but Wolves got some good results last year against the top teams by playing an attacking game. Whether we play 451 or 4411 I’d love to see both Fletcher and Doyle playing, with Doyle either in behind or attacking right midfield. I’m a massive Doyle fan but he needs support at the moment. Take off Fletch and bring on SEB if he can’t last 90 minutes. Id also like go see Hammill replace Hunt but it will almost certainly be Jarvo whose played better as a sub lately.
Noone expects a result at Chelsea but it sounds like we’d settle for a 2-0 loss and move on. I know goal difference may make the difference at the end of the season but “parking the bus” isn’t going to work at Chelsea and their crowd will turn on them if things don’t go their way.
I’m not saying throw caution to the winds but let’s have a go.

Out blogger has finally seen the light and said what wus Numpties have been saying for 3 years… That Mick hasn’t a clue tactically .
Proven time and time again.
Personally , having lost som many games of late I would shake the whole team up. After all, we are expected to lose so bring back to the two wingers, go back to 4-4-2 and have a real crack at them.
But, of course, it will be a dour Wolves performance, that I’ve no doubt.

I’m not going to jump on the anti-McCarthy soap box BUT just point out that it is impossible to see how any team can expect to gain wins or even draws by being negative or too cautious.
The Wolves of years gone by had only one thought, ATTACK!
Those old boys created havoc to other teams and yes they conceeded goals but the wins outdid the losses and brought many 1000′s to their games and also gave excitement to the fans who knew with each game they were going to see Wolves ‘go for it’.
Very different now though with the approach which MM has to the game.
Chelsea may not be the place to go ‘gungho’ but then nothing will be achieved by being too defensive either. We all knowing that Chelsea will score but what will be Wolves’ response, sit back and take up more pressure?
Wolves fans may be fickle to quote dear old Jez and yes Wolves fans may have high expectations but deep down all we want is for our team to put on a show, give 100% commitment and not lie down like a dead corpse.
Do that and Wolves fans will give all the support they can and probably more, is that too much to ask?

Wolves simply don’t have a good enough squad to compete in the Premiership. Workrate counts for nothing if you don’t have have an end product.
EG – West Brom looks like they have a solid base to do the hard work around the middle but also have key strikers who can finish and key midfielders who can string a killer pass.
It’s down to the scouting network at the end of the day and I believe that is where the problem lies.

The reason were forced to play 451 against our favoured 442 is the defence, McCarthy has failed to fix this problem which plagues us every year, start with the premise that Stearman and Elokobi are just not prem quality Berra is vey average and Johnson hasnt been playing well and that is the problem any decent manager will say that you build your team from the back.

Facts: Our defence will always concede at least one goal no matter how we play. We need to score.
Playing wholly defensive helps the opposition keep the ball – fatal at Chelsea.
We must play so that we counter attack effectively and this means Fletcher kept up, and wingers freed from tracking their fullbacks and ready to get forward quickly.
However lets face it, if we keep them down to 3 it will be a result for us.
Mick will say they played brilliantly.
Our only hope of keeping up is that Bolton, Blackburn, and one of the promoted three are worse than we are. 2012 is going to be bad, bad….but I’ll still be going cos I luv um

We are damned if we do and damned if we don’t (play defensively) because we don’t have enough quality players to keep the opposition out, 4-5-1, 4-3-3 or 4-4-2! Nor do we have individuals who can terrorise Premier defences!
We therefore need (as many keep saying) better quality players in key positions in the Jan. window.
Back to the formation at Chelsea debate, remember what Ian Holloway said after Chelsea-Blackpool last year (4-0 by half-time, stil 4-0 at full-time, with Blackpool having some very good chances in second half)? He said Blackpool were “very niave” being defensive in first half. He changed to their normal attacking way for second half, resulting in Chelsea nearly conceding two or three times.
So, PLEASE play Fletcher, Doyle and Jarvis, with Edwards & Hammill while O’Hara & Hunt are out.
Also, PLEASE get David Davis back from Scotland. He should start before either Guedioura or Milijas!

I think that Macarthy is lulling Chelsea into a false sense of security with his “Park the bus” comments. While Chelsea expect us to be defensive we will come at them full throttle, catch them by surprise and be 6-0 up in the first ten minutes which means we can sit back and defend for the other 80 while not letting 7 goals in during the last 6 minutes.
This will then enable MM to move Stephen Ward from LB to centre half on 11 mins then replace big Wayne in goal for the 2nd half therefore giving Stephen Ward the accolade of having played in every position on the pitch for Wolves.
Big Wayne Hennesey can then replace hat-trick hero Kevin Doyle up front for the second half therefore giving him a well earned and much needed rest during the game and hence proving what a master tactician Mick Macarthy really is. So simple i can’t for the love of me work out why he never tried it before.

Hi Tim, I can’t find much to argue with in your comments, but in addition to our lack of ambition, I find it terribly sad that we don’t play basic football anywhere nearly as well as even the modest teams. Does anyone truly think we are a better team than we were in our first year in the Prem? Because I don’t.
I talked over the Everton game with supporters of other teams in a pleasant lunchtime pub session on Monday, and to a man they reckoned Wolves are easily the worst side in the Prem on the evidence of the televised games this year. The buffoonery of the goalkeeper receiving the ball from the kick-off and hoofing it up the field was held to be typical of what Wolves have to offer. I’m of the same mind.
As for MM being ‘delighted’ with the performance he must be on tablets you can’t buy over the counter! I’m astonished Morgan, brought up on Liverpool’s exploits, allows him to continue, surely the owner can see there is only one way we will go, either now or in the very near future if we continue playing Fred Flintstone football?

It really is very insulting to be told by some fans that to call for a change of managment is paramount to treachery.
Many Wolves fans like myself that are now calling for change have stood by the Wolves through the disaster years in the 80′s, to now be called fickle or numpties is a joke.
Im afraid the football on the pitch and by “football” I include tactics and team selection, is clearly going backwards, in our first season in the premiership we played better football than we do now, yes a lot of nievety at times that cost us points, but better football all the same.
The current selection, tactics, formation, is that of a frightned manager with no confidence, producing poor football and a team short on ambition and creativity, football that will in my opinion end in relegation.
I will take absolutly no pleasure in saying told you so, and for some people to suggest that fans are willing the team to loose just so that they can complain, highlights their mental aptitude which explains their blind belief in MM.
Foolish claims that the fans calling for change expect a top six finish with millions upon millions spent on players is also complete rubbish.
Why most fans are calling for a change is because they cant bear to watch their beloved club get relegated, what they want to see is reasonable football no more no less.
I want change because i am a 40yr long supporter of Wolves, and do not want to see Wolves playing this poorly in the championship.
