Wolves manager Mick McCarthy tells fans to get used to cautious approach
Thursday 24th November 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has warned fans to get used to them “sacrificing” attacking principles on the road.
McCarthy’s men go to Chelsea on Saturday after four successive away defeats.
The latest, at Everton last Saturday, sparked more criticism from frustrated fans after the team failed to force a save out of goalkeeper Tim Howard, and had just one on-target effort – Stephen Hunt’s penalty.
Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge represents a massive challenge to turn that run of results around with Manchester United next up on their travels.
While the Wolves boss said he is always looking for an improvement, McCarthy admitted a cautious, containing approach had to be followed.
He said: “People might have expected more of us going forwards, but it’s just the way it is.
“You sometimes have to sacrifice things going forwards to make sure you’re solid and we were solid because we restricted Everton to very few chances.
“I watched Liverpool at Chelsea on Sunday and when I see Liverpool at home they tend to go forwards a bit more. Don’t ask me why that is – that’s an anomaly.
“I don’t know anyone who can answer why a team can be so much better at home than away.
“It might be the set-up of the opposition, but I’d counter that by saying I didn’t see Everton having too many chances against us.”
McCarthy is happy with the 4-5-1 formation but is looking for more from his players.
He said: “I’m very happy with the shape of the team – we played well on Saturday and we didn’t look like losing until we conceded a soft penalty.
“We’re always looking for more – I know we scored from a penalty, but the move that led to it was a well-worked move.
“We were doing fine and they produced very little for us to deal with. When we get beat, people say ‘weren’t you looking for more going forwards?’, but of course we’re always looking for more.
“But I was still happy with our performance on Saturday.”

Mick. Your comment about teams being better at home than away. With the performances of Wolves over the last 3 years. There has been NO DIFFERENCE in the performances home or away.
You cannot play Premiership football when you only have a squad of players with Championship ABILITY. Come on please SMELL THE COFFEE!!!

Mick,I couldn`t get to the match against Everton but all the reports I read and heard on TV said that in the second half Everton were all over us .Any team that sits back and lets the opposition come at them is asking for trouble and you should know that.Just in case you don`t know teams are made up of defenders, midfielders and attackers. It`s obvious that some of our players are played out of position and don`t have much of an Idea what they are doing. This is not down to the players but is down to you and your inept tactics[some say ,what tactics?].It is time that you did the right thing for once and packed your bags,I am sure there are lower division sides where you could do a job,but the Premiereship is too big for you.Step aside please.

We all want thicko out he is past his sell by date never wanted him in the first place hes not a premier manager.

If 15 shots on target are “a few chances” then yes. Mick seems to forget that we met one of the least lethal teams in the league, and might have got a hammering, and we met a stronger attacking force.
Mmm I understand he needs to stop the rot and get some points. I don’t have a problem with that.
My only concerns are the quality of the squad which in my opinion is just no where good enough.
Mick’s had five years to assemble this team. That’s a long time. The problem is the squad is at best a championship squad, albeit a half decent one.
I can’t see us surviving this year. I think QPR have shown their intent and have the funs to keep them up, I believe Bolton will come good and I think Paul Lambert is an exceptional manager and will keep Norwich in the league.
To me , its Wolves, Wigan and probably Swansea for the drop. Having said that, I think Swansea are a decvent side too.
Mick’s had a a fair crack of the whip. Ir really is time for a change now.

One can see supporters not wishing to sign up for this and staying away. Surely they pay to see the teams entertain and get a result, Doesnt auger well for attendance figures for ret of the season. Certainly puts me off a lethargic 90 minute ordeal
Report abuse
I have no problem with the cautious approach away from home, but you do need pace in your team to make it work. As far as I am concerned, Wolves are the slowest team in the Premiership. Chelsea will play a high defensive line and pace is essential to cause them problems. I just can’t see it though, and Chelsea will be relieved to see Wolves coming to town to get them out of their struggle.

Its time for a change this man has took us as far as his ability allows.
Wake up Morgan new empty ground next season in the championship looming if we continue down this road

Only sides with a really good defence can sit back and let the opposition have the ball, trying to do them on the break. Our defence is horrendous. We drop too deep and then hoof it clear straight to them and then it comes straight back! Conceding goals then becomes inevitable. Prem manager? You are having a laugh. Your prem record says it all – clueless!
I get his point that we must make ourselves difficult to beat, and 4-5-1 is definitely the way to go IMO. However, on Saturday we were playing Everton, who by all accounts are hardly flying themselves. Therefore, if we had tried to put them under a bit more pressure by taking the game to them, perhaps we could have been more successful.
Against Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Arsenal – No problem Mick, be as defensive as you like. But Everton? Are they REALLY that good?? I think the other teams will be pretty flattered (and delighted) if we play them with no intent of scoring a few goals!
If we want anything from the game on Sat then ‘going there and having a go’ with two of our top attacking players out is suicidal.
Park the bus I say. 2 defensive mids pls.

Cautious? Its downright negative. At Everton he was playing for a 0-0 draw, this against a team on an awful run. Thirty eight 0-0 Draws will send you down. This club really has to get a grip and sack this man before the damage unrepairable. We now have the CEO and the manager critising supporters. In the curent economic climate I would have thought they should be bending over backwards to keep paying customers happy and not alienating them. If they think Wolves supporters are fickle look what Liverpool fans did to Roy Hodgson, Blackburn to Keen and also West Ham supporters showing their dissent.I went to watch Stourbridge play in the FA Cup on Tuesday, and what a refreshing change that was compared to watching turgid rubbish dished up by a team with no method or plan to survive in the greed league.
He has had a few days to think about it and he is still happy with the performance against Everton. Can only shake my head at this and sigh deeply.
The danger here is that with this attitude of his a situation of complete apathy will emerge where the happy clappers and the realists will both just say **** it i’m not interested any more. When that happens then we really are in trouble when nobody cares about what is happening at this club.

we work on the basis of keeping clean sheets when we employ the worst back four and defensive midfielder in the league, teams will ALWAYS score against us and we have no answer, till the last 10 minutes when we try to save games.which interestingly are the times we play best and mistakenly mick gets credit for !any sniff of a draw and we just defend defend and defend,we need someone who can see past this idea.

Name me one more club in any other British or foreign league that would still have a manager in charge who has produced results half as bad as Mick McCarthy has in the last three years?
Even without buying one more player I believe that a decent manager would get us more points on the board than the idiot we have in charge.

What @11 golden nuggett said more or less hits the nail on the head. We’ve spent most of the season playing with a repatriated right-back who can’t help being skinned, a new centre-back who has yet to live up to his billing, another centre-back who just does not inspire confidence at all and a left-back who isn’t even a left-back and yet, as it stands, is the one of the four who can hold his head up vaguely high. They just have to hope that, whoever is bearing down on them, Henry crocks them before the back four has to deal with it!
It’s enough to drive any man to the Newhampton, rather than just those of us with exquisite taste.
I’ve always been a Mick McCarthy advocate and I still stand by my view that this man has done a wonerful job at Wolves and we have enjoyed the success as a result.
However, this is really worrying and these comments have the scent of a man who doesn’t really know where our next point is coming from.
To play defensively and hope for a draw at teams like Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Tottenham etc is totally understandable and to just attack, attack, attack these teams would be suicidal.
You then look at teams like Everton, West Brom and all those teams around us and if we adopt this same approach here all this does is give these ‘lesser’ teams the confidence to attack us and ultimately, win the game. How many times have we conceded in the last 10 mins of away games in the last two and a bit seasons purely and utterly due to this tactical approach?!?
These teams are just as nervous at home as us and if teams came to Molineux to defend, inevitably it would give us more confidence to go forward and we would probably win more games. But they DON’T, they ATTACK US!!!!
They come to Molineaux smelling blood and go for us, ie QPR, Swansea and get exactly what they came for. Therefore, as a man of reasonable intelligence, I would decifer that the tactic of attacking teams low on confidence on their own patch would be a fairly good way of attempting to accrue points. As the defensive approach isn’t working AT ALL surely a little confidence in our ability to beat teams around us is the only way we will progress, or dare I say it, just manage to escape a relegation battle we seem destined to be involved in for a third year.
Defensive for the top teams I agree, but going to Everton and the such and hoping to scrape a draw is completely unaceptable, confidence sapping for the squad and shows the manager to be weak in his resolve as this appraoch just is not working, and hasn’t now for 2 years.
If all the above is nonsense then I agree, I must be a ‘NUMPTY’ and I will withdraw my comments and season ticket and move to lapland and become one of santa’s helpers!
Please, please, please someone beam me up!

Totally agree with McCarthy!
Little point in going to away grounds to steal a win when we can defend for 89 minutes and concede a goal in the last minute.
Excellent policy.

I realise it is not what one is supposed to say here. E&S seems home to negative, anti 3M, closed-minders.
I was at Everton. The atmosphere in the Wolves end was fine, loud & positive.
Playing Milijas behind Henry worked a treat. Nenad was like an American Football Quarter Back, passing with precision.
Disappointed with the result, but the performance impressed me. Proper football, not biff bang. This poatience will yield results.

This I am afraid is typical of the man, He sees nothing wrong in what happened at Everton and that’s what he intended.
We were lucky against Wigan and were awful for the first 30 mins.
He cannot set the team up to win games, he cannot pick the players to do the job, he cannot bring himself to accept that it was not a good performance.
He thinks it is ok for fans in this difficult economic climate to keep turning up and spending hard earned money to watch this dross and to travel miles to an away game, whilst he and the players keep picking up their money.
He needs to be sacked, as he has no ideas, and dosen’t understand that unless you attack and put teams under pressure you will not score goals, of course you have to play attacking players to achieve this. (Fletcher on for 4 mins)
It is time for the fans to send him and the board a strong message by not turning up to the next home game, hitting them in the pocket for a change it may just change someones mind.
This is relegation talk from McCarthy

To a point i agree with MM, that playing 4.5.1. makes us harder to beat, but Mick often says formations are only ‘numbers’? Like i said 4.5.1. makes us harder to break down, but the downside to it, seems we dont ‘create/score’ many goals. But i would add a team such as ours, who are not blessed with top class strikers, can hardly afford to leave out its ‘best goalscorer’ no matter what ‘system’ you choose to play, especially when your constantly in the bottom half of the league every season your in the BPL. Yes i would play Jarvis for Hunt, but i would play Doyle in O’Hara’s position behind Fletcher, as KD holds up the ball better, and brings players into the game well, and work hard in relation to his defending? Against the likes of Chelsea,Arsenal,MU,MC,Liverpool, you are always going to be up against it for most of the game, so 4.5.1. is the right system, especially with the players MM as at his disposal. Maybe if we stay in the BPL, and given time and funds, one day we may be able to play a more attacking formation more often? UTW:

The fact is Wolves are BORING. All this nonsense that McCarthy comes out with is the same old tripe he was turning out 3 seasons ago. Net result? BOREDOM.. I currently have a season ticket with my kids but I doubt if I’ll renew next season due to the rubbish spewed out my the 3 M’s. I’m pretty tired of being insulted by the current management too. In the last few weeks Wolves fans have been called fickle, numpties and mindless idiots. Can you tell me what other commercial organisation can get away with insulting its customers so readily? It really is beyond me how this arrogant lot can get away with it? Truth is, they won’t in the longer term as the band of numpties and mindless idiots is getting larger every week and will vote with their feet in the end. What have we got to show for our third season in the Prem? Still no players who can genuinely excite us. Just a mixture of top of the table second streamers who run and run and run and run. A centre forward who rarely gets into the opposition box and a centre half who fell out with most supporters within a couple of months of arriving and now gives away more goals than he prevents. What a prospect, surviving in the big league through sheer luck again or being relegated and then told that the current manager is best qualified to get us back up again. Plan B = Relegation, this is no bad thing for the current management as the squad will remain intact and probably go straight back up again. The the cycle would then repeat – GROUNDHOG DAY McCarthy style, sends me cold.
Stop the spin and invest in the team not bricks and mortar!!! Why the hell they are building another stand we can’t fill when the previous one was fine is beyond me but probably provides a hint towards the current owners true intentions.
Yes…. It really is BORING being a Wolves fan

Taxi for McCarthy?? I think the pressure is now starting to tell. SM has undoubtedly voiced his “concerns” about performances, PR failures etc. If you go away from home and sit back hoping for a draw with the way we defend as a team, it’ll be defeats aplenty away from Molineux.
We have consistently over the last two seasons struggled to score goals, MM has a rather love hate relationship with the only two real goalscorers at the club (Fletcher and SEB) and our manager is now saying that we are indeed going to be negative in all our away games.
We are already in a relegation fight despite the closeness in the PL table – three home games coming up against teams around us. If we’ve given up on points away from home then it’s three wins or bust. We won’t be bottom at Christmas but unless MM and Clipboard change their tune we’ll be in the bottom three.
SM – it really is time to decide where we’re going. We are not going forward and continual PR mistkes from the club’s manager and players will end in Championship football next season. I’d prefer games at Chelsea than Coventry thank you very much.

Last night’s E&S back page had Moxey criticising the fans for being fickle. Today the manager tries to defend the lack of quality as a “park the bus ” defensive approach? Gentlemen please, there are a few grown-ups out here who can read, think and see through you and who understand that with the current set-up, from owner down, we are lacking ambition and ability. Frankly you might as well just give all the other teams in the Prem the points and go home. Flog the Mol and build houses, it would be more fun to watch than the dross you have managed to throw at the fans. Chelsea to score at least 5. MankyU to score at least 6. You’re finished.

Spouting off on here, day after day, will not make a jot of difference, no one cares what you think….
Try popping down the training ground and confronting Mick and the players?
Try writing to Jez or Steve M, they always write back.
But for God’s sake stop this repetitive Mick hating barrage of negative bile, unless you actually have the b*lls to take some positive action.
See if you can gather together enough support to stage a protest outside the ground next home game – at least we will be able to see how many coaches/minibus we will need to run you up to the Baggies or Walsall, anywhere but the Molineux.

Reading all the reports it seems obvious to most Wloves fans that tactics are a problem for Mick.
Everton are by no means as serious a threat as they used to be and for us to start so defensively must have been a huge lift for the Everton team.
One shot on target-a penalty- just doesn’t justify such negative tactics, we should have at least started with 2 attacking forwards.
Come on Mick, give us the fans a team that tries to win games and not just make up the numbers when we play away from home against teams around us in the league

#39 Sir Billy.
You are normally very thoughtful in your approach so you will understand that a lot of what is on here is people letting off steam. It would be interesting to hear your view of what needs to be done , from the top of the club down, rather than just have you telling others off for being hate-filled or negative. A protest would have a very negative effect on players already rock-bottom on confidence and no effect at all on the management so don’t see the point.
And if those at the Mol don’t read this stuff they ought to start reading it and get a feel for the tide of dissatisfaction that is welling up.

Patience is ok, keep it tight but at some point to get anything out of a game you have to go forward. Neither Johnson or Berra can make an intelligent pass out of defence and at Everton we were playing the ball around in our defensive third. No team passes the ball back to the goalie as much as we do. Wayne never bowls the ball out but pumps it up the field for Doyle to be knocked over trying to jump with a giant dfender.Doyle never runs forward but out to the wing and Hunt and Edwards never put the ball in the box because there isn’t anyone there. Why does O’Hara take corners instead of Hunt. We don’t have quality but I feel the players are held back by negative tactics as much as anything.
Ps Is there no-one at the club who manages PR and communications because the PR at the moment is a disaster when they are constantly having a go at the fans and spouting rubbish.

this guy cracks me up, we have a c*** defence so basically as soon as we let a goal in we are doomed to defeat unless we get a lucky penalty as at Everton. Chelsea & man Utd must be quaking in their boots or more likely doubled over with laughter

It is at times like this that show the makings of a man, and I am amongst many who feel Mick has lost the plot.. All I hear is negative talk, all I hear is name calling, first we are numpties, then we are idiots then we are fickle.. When we support our club through thick and thin, the fickle ones are the chairman, the manager and players, none of them will be here in twenty years time.. All of us will be, not them.. They are here to make money, their heart is not in the club like us.. When a player like Steve Bull comes along we see one of us on the pitch.. This is rare for a player or anyone at the club to live and breathe the club as much as the supporters.. So please stop this nightmare and bring someone in who can cheer us all up, because the fans can only take so much, another week or 2 of this and there will be massive unrest.. The top of the club – Morgan and Moxey are doing a great job – financially stable and ground developments. Whatever you say about Moxey he has kept this club on an even keel for many years now. Morgan has invested in both the team and ground, some fans think we should throw mega millions at average journey men footballers but they would be the first to protest as we disappear down the leagus again..
Mick McCarthy has taken us to a level not seen for 20 plus years, I have consistantly said that he should have strengthened the coaching team with experienced Premiership quality.
Mick needs fresh input at management level, if he can’t see that he needs help it will cost him his job.
All the other stuff about tactics and players is irrelavent if the manger is stuck in his ways and surronded by yes men.
If we are in the bottom 3 at Christmas Mick will have failed to deliver on the promises made to the fans and Directors in the Summer.
He should resign or admit he needs help.
I am as disappointed as all the ‘numpties’ the difference is that I won’t turn against my own – Wolverhampton Wandrers players, managers and directors whoever they may be are part of our ‘family’ and need supporters.
We have become a laughing stock with Baggies fans because of this continuing in fighting.
We are in the Premiership and some still won’t get behind the team, they prefer us to lose so they can moan.

All last season Ward was slagged off, what’s happened to that thread?
I kept telling the numpties they were wrong about Ward and have been proved right.
Now Stearman is a different matter….

There once was an addage that if you want a draw, then you have to play for a win. Away from home this is probably more appropriate than it is at home. Defensive tactics will generally result in defeat but sometimes, they may pay off – and then you wonder why you didn’t attack and go for a result.
Picking up on #29 Numpty – if the plan is to be relegated there is no guarantee that Wolves would come right back up. Take a look at the Championship and you will see that there are a number of teams who could hold their own in the BPL. Some are spending well to build teams capable of staying in the BPL. They have ambition and are building quality. MM has been great getting us promoted but I wonder if he has the skill necessary to get out of the Championship now. I fear that the rest of the world has developed while Wolves have been treading water and that, in reality, we are now working with a League 1 manager. I firmly believe that the nucleus of a good squad is there. I believe the defence needs urgent attention and I believe (rightly or wrongly) that senior players like Fletcher and Blake have little confidence in the manager. How can it be fixed? If I am right, there is only one way. The manager has to be changed.

Silly billy
go and have the civil partnership with MM and Ward, fans like you are not wanted, you must love the taste of Failure.
Some of us would like to see a bit of Football now and again, for the price we pay.

I used to think mick was a great manager its only been since he insulted the fans after the swansea game that i have started to dislike the manager i agree that wolves set up negativley and alow teams to come at us and thats home and away. The only way that jez and morgan will learn is by refusing to turn up i have a season ticket and dont even bother turning up and i wont until mick goes i will never step foot in the mol again until mick leaves its against what i believe in to show my support to a team who is set up by someone who makes my blood boil i get no enjoyment watching micks wolves defend for 90 minutes i just wonder how many fans will follow suit.

Good grief, is Mick for real?
“You sometimes have to sacrifice things going forwards to make sure you’re solid and we were solid because we restricted Everton to very few chances” – Erm, what do you mean by “sometimes”, Mick? All the time, don’t you mean? We sacrificed attacking play a millennia ago. Granted, Everton had few opportunities -but even that handful easily outweighed our one and only real chance.
“I’m very happy with the shape of the team” – Well, go talk to the average fan, Mick, and I doubt many would agree with you.
“But I was still happy with our performance on Saturday” – If playing non-productive, boring, stifling, Championship-standard football (even against a team who couldn’t win for toffee, if you’ll pardon the pun) is your idea of ‘happiness’, Mick….well, God help us.
“We’re always looking for more” – Presumably a reference to the on-going policy of recruiting ex-Sunderland or Irish players? Preferably as cheap as possible, of course ;-)
I strongly advise all loyal Wolves fans making the trip to Stamford Bridge to take two things with them: a 24-pack of Red Bull to help you stay awake -oh, and a cricket scorecard. You may well need ‘em.

Sir Billy
For absolute clarity I do NOT rate Ward at all as a left back. Indeed even you last year talked about Ward as a Centre Forward. It was the year before that you claimed he was a premiership left back. In those two years he was diabolical in the left back position.
Even Mad Mick dropped him last year! . More to the point, although he has improved he’s playing alongside three absolute donkeys so they are beginning to make him look better than he really is.
The whole back four is dreadful. I’m amazed Mick’s top target, Johnson, could be even worse than Berra but on average, I’m starting to believe he actually is.
My first transfer as the manager of Wolves would be a left back. My second, a central defenisve midfielder.
So, just to make sure you know, it’s not everyone who agrees with what you say.

Sir Billy
one final point. It’s actually you that has the Baggies fans, and some of us Wolves fans laughing at you.
You are embarassing and deluded and whereas I find you highly amusing some folk on here get a little frustrated with you.
I particular like the bit about Mick should admit he needs help. I can imagine him going into Moxeys office and saying ” I really don’t have a clue at what I’m doing , is there any chance of getting ray Wilkins in to help me “…
Finally, you also made me chuckle suggesting that the £16 million is well spent on the new North Bank.
I’m still smiling now, Keep up the good work, I’m also falling off my chair chuckling!

Sir Billy” Moxey and Morgan are doing a great job” you cannot be serious.Morgan inherited a debt free club from Sir Jack(the person who we should all be thankful to)and was required to inject £30,000,000 .Apart from that as far as I am concerned he has done absolutely nothing.Mick got us promoted with very little money and he and the players have performed miracles to keep us in the premiership. As for Moxey he ,if I recall, tried to persuade Hoddle to change his mind when he tendered his resignation. So that goes to show how much he knows about football(Ask any Soke fan whether they would have him back).Due to fact Sir Jack wrote off the amount owing to him ,in addition to the Sky money we receive and the fact we are not spending money on players,ANYONE with a financial background ,should be able to keep the club in the black.Moxey can talk a good game but I am afraid that is about as far as it goes. Sir Billy I have no doubt you have the best intentions ,but unfortunately you are the type of fan who Morgan is taking for granted.

Sir Billy – firstly Ward was USELESS last year – the fact that he is doing better this season doesn’t make those that called it right last time numpties…. you ask where those fans are now which just shows how unable to change your views you are – true fans call it as they see it. If Stearman has a few good games will that make you a numpty (don’t bother to answer that one).
If there is a lot of “hate mail” (your words not mine – i call it passionate critisism)to trawl through then doesn’t that make you think that MAYBE there is another valid point of view other than yours ??
Finally, ref the fans parliment – you have mentioned this a few times in the last week as some great platform for fans – its not… most fans don’t have the time or inclination to join together other than on match days, and if we are going to be labelled FICKLE by our CEO for disagreeing with him then I certainly have better things to do.
