Jez Moxey: Wolves fans are ‘fickle’

Jez Moxey: Wolves fans are ‘fickle’

Chief executive Jez Moxey was today at the centre of a row over calling Wolves fans “fickle”.

An anonymous email sent to a Wolves supporters’ blog site revealed Moxey said: “Newsflash: You are fickle” during the fans’ parliament meeting last week.

The sender is a member of the fans’ parliament who attended the meeting. Moxey was answering a point made by a member of the parliament who said it was wrong for players to call the fans fickle following the sarcastic cheering at Karl Henry’s substitution against Newcastle.

In minutes of the meeting since released by the club, Moxey admitted using the term ‘fickle’, but in context: “Come on, guys, newsflash! Some fans – and I stress ‘some’ – are fickle!”

He added: “If someone from the club says something you don’t like in response to a negative reaction from the crowd, don’t hold it against them.

“Perhaps everyone needs to develop slightly thicker skins.”

The anonymous sender also claimed Moxey said: “Stoke fans are better than Wolves fans”, and said “If Moxey had his way he would not continue with ground redevelopment”.

But Moxey told the Express & Star: “A person who goes to Stoke games came to our match against Swansea and commented to me that he couldn’t believe the negativity. But I would never say Stoke fans are better than Wolves fans.”

Story about nothing. You’ve only got to read the posts here every day to know how fickle some fans are. He’s said nothing wrong but has been reported out of context and will now be slated for it. Guilty of speaking his mind, that’s all. Move on to Chelsea and more important matters ie whether we can put on a performance worthy of the name ‘Wolves’ to show we deserve to be in this division.

Although I don’t always agree with what Mr. Moxey says his comments on this occasion are right. Some stress the word SOME fans are fickle and they are. Whether Mr. Moxey should have commented at all is another matter but he’s entitled to an opinion like a good many others.

When we played Newcastle I walked back with some of their fans and they could not believe how negative some Wolves fans are and the same comments were made by Swansea fans.

I have said before all Wolves fans are being tarred with the same brush and I would like to stress that these fans are in a minority not the majority.

I think Jez is spot on. the minority that do get on the team and managers backs are fickle have a short term memory. We DO NOT have a god given right to be in this league! It can take years to establish a team in this division. Ironically Stoke is a prime example and bar the atrocious one dimensional football they play have gradually took a foothold in the league and are having a ball in Europe. get a grip you thick fickle idiots because if you get what you wish for we will have bought a one way ticket to the championship. I don’t see how this is news worthy. Moxey is just saying what everyone already knows: Wolves fans have always been fickle. We lose we are relegated, we win all is ok, there is no middle ground. Most fans fail to realise that we are a lower half of the league team and will be a good few years before anything changes.

Nope cant see anything wrong with what he said. When your team plays well its shouts and cheers. When your team plays below the level you think they should be at, your not happy.
BIG question is what is he goiong to do about it?
I went to the Everton game and everybody I spoke to (even the Everton lads on the train home)said what a poor game it was. So where did McCarthy get the word BRILLIANT from when describing the way it was played. Even Dave Moyes did’nt go that far and they won, infact he asked for more investment in players!
So when there is such a HUGE gap in what McCarty sees on the pitch and we do, is there any surprise people arn’t happy?

Please Please Please stop all the negativity. We have all come a long way over the past few years, bearing in mind the waste we experienced under previous managers, and the utter drivel under Hoddle.
For god sake, everyone be positive for a change and get behind the club. we will go no where without support, not negativity. I agree it is good to run the club solvent but you need to take a gamble in order to improve year on year, perhaps £40-£50 million on the basis of staying up and receiving our TV monies.

By the time the transfer windows re opens we will already be in the bottom three (looking at the fixture list) and will NOT be able to attract any player that will improve the current squad.

Why re develop the ground now, wait until we are established premier club finishing mid table and improving then we can sell out a bigger stadium.

Listen, i accept we have an expectant crowd, after all it was Wolves Steve Morgan and Sir Jez who said we would not face a 3rd season of struggle! Talk about “shooting ourselves in the foot”. Oh and if Stoke continue on their current run, they will turn too, as do all fans. We may just have a relatively short fuse at Wolves but our history over the last 30 years pehpas partly explains why.

I’m not fickle I just have ambition and pride in my club. I’ve been going for thirty years, I live in London and make the regular trip to Molineux spending good money and missing out on good money I could be earning whilst also annoying my wife who is not a football fan or Wolverhampton person and cannot understand why I do it.

I’ve seen immense disgrace on the pitch at Molineux in those years but enjoyed them all, the world of football changes though and tragically I find the running of the club (Moxey and Morgan) and the manager detached from reality and insulting to the fans who will always be here when they’ve long moved on. I’m finding the whole situation embarrassing and depressing these days and feel that those running the club need to accept why there is now such negativity in the stands at present; it’s not the fans causing it but the diabolical management of the team. When this occurs in my business I do not blame my “customers” I blame myself and my staff and deal with it.

Like all West Midlands fans, Wolves fans are fickle but let’s talk about Mr Moxey:-
    1) The fans have been shortchanged with a big lack of signings. 5/6 new faces were required and of our squad half-a-dozen are injury prone.
    2) Charging £1.50 per ticket transaction is a disgrace.
    3) The handling of the North Stand season ticket holders has been farcical. I know no one near me.
    4) Refreshments in the ground are a joke.
    5) Watching from local bars is perfectly acceptable, when unemployment is high in the area and ticket prices are too much.

As a result of the above, I have paid half towards my season ticket and will not pay a penny more. Instead I will watch the game from one of the pubs and go to the more reasonably priced away games. This is from someone who went to every league game last season. Poor value for money!

Personally I find them wholly accurate and it annoys me how fans can turn up on a saturday, vent all and sundry at the team, manager, chairman etc and then get uppity when those actions are questioned and thrown back at them. I get that people pay good money, I am in their boat but currently it is the atmopshere created by the people around me rather than the teams performance that is ruining my match going experience. If you go in to a restaurant and start abusing the chef don’t be surprised if he spits on your food.

I am the first to admit that there is only limited room for sentiment in football, but for gods sake look where we have come from, what do people really expect? Due to footballs economics we aren’t ever going to win the league, unlikely to win a cup so the very best we can hope for is mid-table in the Prem, a position we are 3 points off. Fickle. Perhaps if there was more honesty from the Senior Management that would best describe their ambitions instead of all the rubbish that they put out then the fans would be more understanding. One minute they say that they need several new players and then in the next they say they are happy with the squad and then the fans see the team in a relegation battle again and become unsettled. Its not accurate for the happy clappers to suggest that fans do not give enough support to the team because if you pay for a ticket then you are a fan but sometimes frustration leads them to,quite rightly, make their feelings known if the performance is poor. As the majority of the posts I make on this site are critical of the people running the club then probably in Moxey’s eyes I am “fickle”.In view of how the club has performed in its recent history then I think I have every right to be. It absolutely amazes me when people post on this site saying Wolves fans should be grateful for the fact we have been in the premiership for 3 years!! Do me a favour. I remember the days when we were getting to cup semi finals and playing decent football. So Mr Moxey this is what this particular fan(a supporter for 45 years and a season ticket holder for many years) is fickle about:
1.Total disregard for the fans. The club cant even be bothered to tell us how much they pay for players.(The fans parliament is an absolute joke!)
    2. No youth players coming through.
    3. No investment in the team.
4.No decent cup runs. A seeming acceptance of an annual relegation battle.
5 A chairman who says nothing.
6Falling attendances(Dont blame television Moxey if we were playing decent football the ground would be full)
7No progress on the field.Content to only buy players from clubs that have been relegated from the premiership.

I would like to ask the font of all knowledge that is streako – 69 (a) who does he think will come and replace Moxey, Mick and Morgan that will do a better job? and (b) what does he really think Wolves can achieve realistically in today’s climate? Perhaps he thinks if we sack Mick Jose Mourinho will want to leave Madrid to come here? Or maybe Sheikh Mansour will ditch Man City the minute he sees that streako and his mates have made a picket outside the Billy Wright statue and forced Morgan out?? Get real, for a club of our size and structure we are doing ok and are 3 points away from what would have to be deemed as successful. I am as frustrated as the next man with some of Mick’s team selections and signings, don’t get me wrong, but I’m also objective enough to know that we are in a better position both in terms of on the field and off the field than we have been in generations and if you can’t see that then I really do pity you.

Remind me what division we were in for all but one of the past 19yrs before Morgan took over would you please streako?

The bloke just doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut, whether he is right or wrong, his attitude stinks. “newsflash”, what’s all that about, patronising idiot.

I can remember a few of his classic comments whilst trying to defend himself.

    1. When Graeme Souness was linked with the club he defended his attendance at a match by saying “it was a coincidence really, he was on the same flight as me on the way to and on the way back from Florida for our Xmas holiday” I would like to know what the CEO of a football club was doing going on a 2 week holiday over the Xmas period, that is one of the most important, busiest times in any football club’s season. Plenty of other times to take a break.

    2. When Glenn Hoddle handed in his resignation half an hour before England kicked off against Macedonia, Mr Moxey stated that to prove he didn’t expect the resignation that he was, at the time, on West Park boating lake in a boat with his daughters. Nowt wrong with being there but it begs the question, why was the CEO of a football club on a boating lake at that point? England were about to kick off against Macedonia and the Haywood Suite was full of REAL football fans watching the game on big screens. I would have thought that a) he should have been watching the game in case Mr Hoddle had come to him to ask to sign a player from that game (be it English or Macedonian) at a later date or b) he should have been taking the opportunity to talk to fans in the suite prior to watching the game.

I read the full minutes on the wolves website and I would urge you to do the same. If anything they are even more patronising than this diatribe.

    here is a small section…
Ryan Leister began the Q&A session by venting his frustration at what he considered to be a ‘misunderstanding’ regarding the ‘sarcastic cheers’ which greeted Karl Henry’s substitution during the home defeat against Newcastle: “I’d like to know what the thoughts are behind the scenes at the Club. In my view the ironic cheers were concerning Mick making two positive substitutions, which doesn’t usually happen quick enough or not at all in some peoples’ eyes. I don’t think the fans’ reaction was directed at Karl and I believe some people have got the wrong end of the stick.”

Jez responded: “I think the important thing is: how did Karl Henry feel? Karl has recently gone on record saying exactly how he felt and really that’s all that matters. He was disappointed and there was also massive disappointment within the Club at the reaction of some fans, whatever the reason for it. With us all in this together, there was a sense of, yet again, shooting ourselves in the foot.

“In my opinion, the treatment of Mick, and the chanting directed at him by some of the fans marked a low point in my eleven year tenure. After everything he’s done for this Club over the last five years, perhaps some people have short memories. If there was ever a sense of us shooting ourselves in the foot, that was it.”

Karl Henry and Mick McCarthy get paid handsomely to take this criticism. Some people attending Molineux will earn less in a year than Henry does in a week. They still get criticism from their managers, customers and employees if they get it wrong, so why not McCarthy.

Moxey you are completely out of touch,do you not realise there is (as good as)a recession out here in the real world?

A lot of this comes down to expectation, and what you realisitcally think Wolves can achieve, and I mean THINK and not WANT Wolves to achieve. On a personal level I am 26yrs old, have been going up for 20yrs and during that time 16yrs of that has been spent underachieving in what is now the Championship. To me, that was real underachievement and completely different to what we’re seeing now. Towards the end of that time when Hoddle was in charge my faith in the club was almost at breaking point as the worst emotion possible had taken hold within the club, and that emotion is apathy where people no longer cared.

The change for this was Hoddle leaving, Mick coming in and people’s expectations being realligned. It is no coincidence that in a year when most fans were just happy for us to stop us we made the play-offs. Likewise, the first year in the Prem, and last year to an extent we were again happy to stop up and we achieved just that. Perhaps this year fans expectations no longer allign with the clubs or are no longer realistic. For me, if the season were to end now and we’d stop up, even in 17th but 3 points off the top half I would be happy, but it seems some will not be, so again I ask, what do people realistically think we can achieve??

Don’t understand why people seem intent on agreeing with Moxey who is not a paying fan. Wolves fans are no more fickle than any other team in the country, people seem to forget that Albion wanted Hodgson out just a few weeks ago a man who has had little money to spend and what little he has had used to sign Shane Long with. Mick has spent 50 million on this squad and players that have been shipped on at a loss for less than half of what we paid for them. People such as Andrew Surman, Greg Halford and the Neck are all examples of where Mick has wasted our money. We still have not found a better defender than Craddock who imo should walk into this team. The fans have a right to show discontent with the direction the club is going at the moment without being called mindless idiots especially when our manager comes out and says that he was delighted with 1 shot on goal against a team lower than us in the table. I was at the Everton game the fans were fantastic no booing or anti Mick chanting but however Mick choses to paint the performance we conceded 2 goals and lost yet another game. The “mindless idiots” do not expect Wolves to finish top 10 but when the manager comes out and says that is his aim then I can understand some of the illfeeling towards him and the board when we are placed 17th again. I don’t see how our chief executive coming out to the fans parliament and calling his customers fickle is in anyway going to help his or the teams cause. I honestly believe that if the team were playing good football to the extent they were able but still heading for relegation, and the manager was not given to dressing up appalling football and regular defeats as being ok, almost all fans would be behind the team and the club in general.

Well said, Robert Perry (post 68). That’s a good list you compiled, mate. We could add a few more items to it, too, if fans so wished:

    1. Rip-off charges for booking tickets.
    2. Hugely overpriced refreshments.
    3. A manager that can insult and swear at the fans, yet escape any apparent reprimand.
    4. The South Bank handed over on a plate to the Steptoes for the cost of a pie and a pint.
    5. Liquidator banned -nowhere else, though, I notice.

All these things have, in their own very small way, slowly eroded the warm feelings some fans have towards their club. It’s no use selling Premier League football to the Gold ‘n’ Black masses, Wolves, if your fans don’t feel respected and appreciated. Instead, many feel taken for granted and exploited at every opportunity.

As we’re now customers rather than fans, you can reasonably expect a few complaints from time to time, Jez. That’s life, I’m afraid, son. Also, being ‘fickle’ is merely human nature and not a facet exclusive to Wolves fans, Jez. That’s why every club has them. So, get used to it, mate -just as we have had to get used to a brand of crap, unexciting football that costs an arm and a leg to ‘enjoy’ at Molineux.

I’m now into my 43rd season visiting Molineux. I was there when Steve Bull made his home league debut (a 2-1 defeat against Southend 20/12/86). I was there at Plymouth when McCarthy took charge. I’m sick to death of what is happening at Molineux at the moment so I guess I must be one of Moxey’s so called fickle fans.

The underperforming manager is slagging off the fans and literally taking the mick by praising absolutely dire performances, the overpaid and underperforming captain who has only been here for a couple of months has slagged off the fans, the overpaid and underperforming Jez Moxey is slagging off the fans.

The quality of football being played is an absolute joke and quite frankly embarrassing for a club with premier league status let alone a club in its 3rd year in the prem. Newly promoted teams seem streets ahead of us on the pitch. The atmosphere at Molineux is dismal partly because the most passionate fans have been threatened with deactivation of their smart card tickets if they dare to show any passion.

On the face of it we should be on a high. 3rd season in the top division for the first time in 30 years but things are very rotten in the current state of Molineux IMO. Much of it stems from Moxey and his unwavering support for a manager who has overall done an excellent job for the club from what he came into but has reached the limit of his ability and has gone a couple of seasons past his move on date.

Outsiders may well come to Molineux for a game and get suprised by all the negativity, but thats it isnt it – they come to just one game while the regular fans see whats unfolding in front of them game in game out and therefore have every right to be negative with the dross that is being served up. What is more negative than repeatedly rolling the ball back to the Hennessey for him to hoof it forward and lose possession?

I’m still quite positive on Morgan and I can only hope that my gut feeling about him is correct and that he will act soon. With the present thinking coming from Moxey/McCarthy I can only see one outcome for this season at the moment, relegation. If by some miracle we do again survive by the skin of our teeth again I can only presume McCarthy will be in charge for yet another season so it will be more of the same.

All I can say with certainty is that my 2 season tickets will not be renewed next season if things continue as they are. I’m sure the call of Molineux will no doubt lure me back at some stage but only on a temporary basis. My passion will have to be reignited big time to tempt me into a season ticket again.

In Websters dictionary the definition of Fickle is; “Inconstant in feeling or purpose” “Changeable” “Erratic” “Unsteady”. Which just about sums up the performance of this Wolves team, leadership and Manager, not to mention the team tactics.
I don’t want to offend you “Einsteins” out there who consider Moxey’s “Tell it like it is” attitude even remotely believable, but it does appear many of you are again falling for the lies.
I would hardly say that fans feeling disgruntled after three years of Management lies, struggle, and broken promises even remotely relates to being “Fickle”.
The three M’s are smart, unfortunately a lot smarter than the many people posting on this site, they know how to play the game.
The majority of people here have genuine concerns and are good people, with differing views.
We all need to collectively look at the facts.
A large majority of fans are either happy or unhappy with how this club is being run, That is a fact.
Moxey stating that even a few Wolves fans are fickle is untrue and not a fact, based on Websters dictionary.
McCarthy picking his favourites to play whether in form or not, is a fact.
Moxey and McCarthy stating that the squad was stong enough in the summer is a fact.
The squad being strong enough is not a fact.
Moxey comparing Wolves supporters to Stoke is untrue and not a fact.
Morgan, McCarthy, Moxey want what is best for them. NOT Wolvehampton Wanderers, FACT.

So Mr Moxey calls our fans fickle. Well they have plenty to be fickle about. They pay extremely hard earned money to watch some absolutely dire performances week in and week out.

The club are investing megabucks to re-build a stadium on land we don’t even own – shouldn’t we get the team right first?

They stop the “singing south bank” from singing, thus killing the atmosphere by making everyone sit down – every other club has standing up fans so why cant we? Try telling the Man U fans to sit down! They help lift the team so why stop them? So health and safety might mean taking out 200 seats. So what, they are only the 200 often given over to away fans anyway – are we bothered – no.

Personally, I have often wondered if there is a hidden agenda for Mr Morgan in his acquisition of Molineux and I am certainly not convinced on his commitment to everything gold and black. Lets face it, he brought the club for a steal and could make an enormous profit if he sold the club tomorrow.

Then we have Mick having a go at the fans. I have always liked Mick McCarthy but am fast losing respect for him. The “paying customers” have a right to voice their opinion. If they didn’t pay he wouldn’t have a job. It would help if he didn’t keep playing players out of position – everyone groans when they hear the team sheet.

The 3Ms need to get their act together and sort things out. Furthermore, they should all give the fans a very sincere apology – and quickly!!

Streako – Do you think everybody works at Wolves for nothing ?
If you say, the average earnings of our 25 man squad is £30k a week, pretty modest in the Premier League these days, that’s around £36 million a year, or £108 million by the end of our 3rd Premier League year. On top of that you have whatever the salaries are of the younger players not in the 25, the coaches, manager & yes, of course the directors. You have the running costs of the stadium, gas, electric, water, council tax, you have the running costs of the training ground & the youth set up. We have the wages of the retail side & then theirs all the administration that comes with the club that somebody is paid to do. Then of course there are the transfer fees we’ve paid out. I’ve tried to give you an idea of where the money might have gone but I suspect I haven’t even really begun to scratch the surface of the clubs actual costs. I haven’t even mentioned printing costs & things like that.

You moan about no youngsters coming through, but then moan about the club investing in better facilities to try and improve our youth set up ?

Like I say, whatever you think of McCarthy & Moxey, fair enough, but to insinuate that Morgan is here to take money out of the club, a club he invested £30 million of his own cash in, is really not fair on the man.

Do you know what, if it didn’t mean so much I would almost agree with the likes of streako and the guy who wants to boycott a match and say yeah, lets get everyone out from the top down and then see where we are, once we’ve gone the way of Charlton, Leeds, Bradford etc then they can all sit back and be rightly proud of what they’ve achieved. Who is to say anyone new coming in would do better? After all, like it or not Morgan has already achieved more at the club in 3yrs than SJH did in 16yrs.

What also scares me is this notion of being a ‘happy clapper’ being a negative thing, almost as if to be a real fan you have to go to games filled with cynicism and doubt and question the men the top just because “we’m payin’ customers ay we”. For me, this can go two ways, either people like myself who like to be objective and reasonable about things get driven away by the horrid atmosphere and the lunatics take over the asylum, or this element of support that purports to be the heart and soul of the club but are actually nothing but hypocritical doom mongers need to stay away or go and poison another club. I’d honestly much rather go to games with 10 to 15,000 reasonable and happy people than brag about our supposed large and fantastic fanbase when half of them are doing nothing more than drag the place down.

We are the only form of consistancy at the Mol! However, the gates are dwindling gradually and this must be a worry to Moxey and Morgan!
They have only themselves, and MM to blame for this! It’s okay saying what they have done etc etc but we have to deal with the here and now! 3 season in and still no further forward, disgraceful manager statistics and tactics, predictable, boring poor quality football from below par players who would be better off at other clubs in the fizzy! Moxey is all self serving and glaringly out of touch with fans and their needs!
Massive response now building for the Sunderland game protest now, it will be interesting to see, if any, the response. I agree the Benitez would be a good replacement for what is here at present also Ray Wilkins is worth looking at as well!
The best thing Moxey could do is just leave and be replaced with a football person, someone the fans respect!

sue – 115, thank you, I appreciate the sentiment and it is good to know that the fanbase isn’t completely full of short-sighted mindless idiots to use a now well-worn phrase. Don’t get me wrong, overall I am far from happy with the current situation and of course I would like the team to be performing better in the league and playing more free-flowing football and also getting better value for my money, but I know that life isn’t perfect and I’m also intelligent enough to know that football on the whole is a cruel game which you buy into knowing that there is an 80%-90% chance you will probably be disappointed at various points during every season. This isn’t a Football Manager game, the Premier League is the most highly sought after league to play in in world football and therefore the highest to stop in. We are very much a goldfish in a pond full of sharks still in terms of experience in this division both on the field, and arguably even more crucially off the field. In 20yrs of this League this is only our 4th year in it so to survive in it still should IMHO be deemed a success. I’m pleased that the people at the top seem to have a long term vision for the club and have learned the lessons from the last 20yrs where constant knee-jerk reactions got us absolutely nowhere and held us back whilst numerous ‘smaller’ clubs tasted the big time before us.

If we’re going to go down we’ll go down whether MM remains in charge or not, and I do have my reservations now as to whether or not he has taken us as far as he can it must be said. But talks of Benitez or O’Neill wanting to come in are laughable and whilst there is an absense of a realisitic candidate being available who will definitely do a better job then we should chill out a bit and stick with Mick for me.

I ask you, what is better for our club? All pulling together and working to get out of this or boycoting a game just because you sit in the South Bank and still beat your chest because the police forced you out of the stand all those years ago? If you and your ilk do boycot the Norwich game then you never know, the atmoshpere will probably be better and consequently the team might play with a bit more freedom and play better, so go ahead, I’d be glad for you not to be there.

Whatever the criticism of fans by Moxey et al it is foolhardy as they are the ones running the club and this excuse of look how far we’ve come doesn’t wash. We have to look forward.

Facts are at the moment we lose most weeks, the standard of football we play is dire, even when we win it’s never convincing and supports have a right to moan due to the money they pay every week! Moxey and McCarthy should take a look at themselves and ask if what they are doing is really good enough instead of just having a pop at the fans.

@ 120 – Carsick Steve. I congratulate you on your post – one of the most sensible I have seen on here. When I was able to drive up to the W. Midlands to support my club, as a season ticket holder, I would have loved to have done it in a more comfortable and better car – but I made do with what I could afford. Had I done otherwise and splashed out on a superior model, it would have been great for a time, but eventually my finances would have caught up on me and something would have had to go. In the same way, Wolves could splash out and perhaps enjoy fleeting success – but for how long and to what end? Wolves are no longer a big club and on a larger scale have to balance their finances accordingly, and I for one accept that. It will affect the way we compete in the Premier (or any) League obviously but, if any one of us could change places with Steve Morgan, could we honestly say we would do things much differently – if it was our money at stake? It is easy to spend other folks’ money for them, especially when one doesn’t know their overall financial commitments.

122 – moxey out now – If you really, truly believe that then fair enough. You’re wrong, but who am I to try and convince you otherwise if that is your opinion. Don’t forget, for FA Cup games away teams are allowed a bigger allocation of tickets and the club only usually strikes a gentleman’s agreement with visiting teams for them to have a lower amount of tickets. Albion used their right to demand the full allocation as they would sell them, the club pushed for the split lower SB / JH flank as they did with the Man Utd and Rochdale cup games in previous years but the police would not allow this, the club therefore had little choice but hey, why let the facts get in the way of a good witch hunt.

You’re probably against the new North Bank as well, conveniently however the away fans will soon be situated up there which means that the situation will not arise again, something you have probably never given a thought to. The Villa friendly is irrelevant as it was just that, a friendly with a very low attendance. It just beggars belief to me why some people are that convinced that Moxey et al hate the fans when as savvy businessmen they are surely aware that they are the lifeblood of the club. Nothing but short-sighted blinkerdness and an unwavering desire to see only what you want to see.

Seems I guessed correctly that, if I mentioned the South Bank being handed over to the Steptoes (post 100) that someone would pick up the baton and run with it. And they have. Unsurprising, really, because that act by Moxey was tantamount to sacrilege.

Yes, it’s in the past and yes, we’re building a new ground. However, that dreadful decision was the very day I realised just how out of touch this club had become with its fans. It was the day when the club effectively spat in its own fans’ faces and subjected us to ridicule by our most despised rivals. And all for money.

As BrummieNick correctly says, both clubs could’ve agreed on a smaller away following. In fact, I’d rather have given away home advantage than suffer the indignity of being turfed out of my seat. Like you, Nick, I will never forgive or forget. Neither will thousands more.

OTT? Not so. The South Bank took over from the North Bank decades ago as Wolves ‘spiritual home’, yet Moxey stabbed us in the back. Any fan who can live with Moxey’s decision and feels quite happy about it…fine. Good for you. Just don’t insist that the rest of us have to feel the same. Respect our feelings, as I do yours.

Dear Ye Olde South Bank (130),

It won’t suit your twisted anger but the FA Cup regulations and the police were the major factors in the WBA takeover of the South Bank NOT JEZ MOXEY. HE HAD NO CHOICE. West Brom wanted the maximum number of tickets. Wolves had to put them somewhere and the idea of two places ie Lower Steve Bull and the side of the South Bank was not acceptable to the police. Now what would you have done? Refused?

Oh, and by the way, the ‘South Bank thing’ was a product of Wolves hooligans deciding that the North Bank wasn’t exciting/violent enough. The North Bank may be from a different generation now but that is the spiritual home of the vocal element. They have aged and now the younger and more vocal generation are settled elsewhere. All very normal – apart from the ‘South Bank thing’ being born from violence.

Have you ever asked yourself why a club that purports to be the size of Wolves has constantly underachieved over the past 20-25 years whilst any number of less prestigious clubs have stolen a march on us and been more successful? After all, you can’t blame the Managers because they’ve come and gone, you can’t blame the Chairmen because they’ve come and gone, and you can’t lay the blame at the players because they’ve come and gone, as have Chief Execs, Groundsmen, tea ladies, anyone you wish to name. The one constant throughout this period of underachievement has been the fans. A fanbase that craved Premier League football for years and now that it has finally been delivered and the club has an open long term vision that is no longer good enough and the people that have delivered it are open to such abuse because the team loses more than it wins. Newsflash : if you want to see a Wolves team win more games than they lose then you’d better hope they go down because the reality of football these days is that a club like Wolves will always struggle in the Premier League.

Just take a read of this thread, some people’s views are a disgrace and make me ashamed to be a Wolves fan, sack the manager, sack the chairman, sack the chief exec, boycot games, stage protests, honestly, some people must just live to moan and it’s no wonder we are a laughing stock and get painted as idiots and ‘dingles’. You keep saying Morgan is a disgrace, his job is to look after our club. In the short time he’s been here we’ve been promoted, we’re in our 3rd consecutive Premier League season and we’re one of very few, football clubs, in any division, managing to breakeven without selling prized assets. He is determined this club won’t sink into a debt spiral for a short term gain to boost his ego like Milan Mandaric did at Pompey before bailing out. In what way is he a disgrace ?

Your assertion that he’s here to just take money out of the club is a joke, and to call him a disgrace, despite the club being in a stronger position now than we’ve been in for generations makes you a joke.

142 – 25 years ago this month Steve Bull signed for this club and there was certainly no underachievement in the first 5 years of Bullys reign with 2 promotions and 50,000+ Wolves fans at Wembley to watch a 4th division team lift the Sherpa Van Trophy.

The serious underachievement has taken place during the SJH reign, who though had a heart of gold (and black) did not have a clue about running a football club. After about 10 years he eventually appointed Moxey whom he was grateful to because he helped him run it slightly better than it was run before …. which is not saying much! All of the “underachievement” of the last 20-25 years effectively took place under SJH and a very large slice of it under Jez Moxey.

The fans of this club are generally absolutely first class proper football fans unlike the plastic fans that many clubs have however we dont suffer fools easily. Unfortunately Jez Moxey in particular and Mick McCarthy are both treating us with contempt to cover up their own shortcomings. We are not happy and the current atmosphere at the club is as poisonous as I can ever remember and that includes the Bhatti period.

They’re not treating us with contempt, don’t be so melodramatic.

Moxey represents the cynical business side of football that has crept into the game over the last 15 years or so. To him it’s not a sport in the sense that the fans wish it to be, it’s a business. That is what football has become. Not only that, we’re a relatively small business at the moment compared to our competition in this league. But if he didn’t view his position in that way we wouldn’t be where we are now, we’d be a lot worse off.

If you remember, I said that the day Moxey handed over the South Bank was the day I realised just how out of touch this club had become with its fanbase -and I quite literally meant -and mean- those words. I was shocked to the core, to be honest. I realised right there and then that the top brass really DIDN’T appreciate the bridges they’d break or, just as importantly, the anti-social consequences of their actions. The scuffles in the lower tier of the Bully Stand on matchday between fans, stewards and police -plus the after-match violence- were TOTALLY PREDICTABLE. Jeez, any dimwitted thicko could’ve predicted that. Yet, amazingly, Jez not only allowed it to happen, but so too did the Police and the FA.

You shouted, “HE HAD NO CHOICE”. Well, I disagree, as is my prerogative. Jez DID have a choice -as did West Brom in asserting their ‘right’ to a full compliment of tickets. Both clubs KNEW FULL WELL what the consequences were likely to be -and it duly materialised, of course- so where was either club’s common sense? Both clubs rightly denounce violence where Black Country Derby games are concerned, but neither felt it important enough to back down. Ever considered this point? I have. Moxey could and SHOULD have informed the Police and FA that there would be NO WAY our South Bank was going to be sacrificed…only over his dead body -period. Moxey would have bought himself much respect for that. He didn’t -so it’ll be forever hung around his neck like an albatross. Fans will talk of it for decades to come, even if I don’t. That’s the measure of the impact HIS DECISION has made.

Poor old Moxey is the guy who, let’s not forget, banned Liquidator due the foul language and sheer hostility it generated against WBA. According to Jez’s warped logic however, it seems that handing over the South Bank to the Steptoes was LESS of a risk. Work that one out, if you can! The same could be said of the Police’s logic -I mean, they were the ones who wanted Liquidator banned, right? Sorry, but they’re both hypocrites when you think deeply enough about it. However, if they’re NOT to be seen hypocrites, then we have to accept that playing Liquidator is/was far more conducive to inciting riotous disorder. That’s logical enough by anyone’s standards, surely?

Am I seriously expected to believe that the Police and FA couldn’t/wouldn’t recognise the likely consequences and decline Albion’s full-ticket allocation? Do you truly believe that common sense couldn’t rule the day, if pushed hard enough? Or did Moxey suddenly lose his voice and meekly give in? If so, he’s in the wrong job because we needed backbone, not a wimp.

Do you think it was a wise move considering that the violent, lunatic fringe would predictably be only too willing to exploit this situation, both inside and outside the ground? Talk about a powder keg in the making! Yet, like the fools they are, they went ahead, like lemmings over a cliff. Result? Eleven cops hospitalised as Wolves thugs viciously battled Police for more than an hour in the city centre, overturning vehicles in the process. I’m not saying it wouldn’t have kicked off anyway, but everyone ‘in the know’ realises that the South Bank fiasco was akin to pouring jet fuel on proceedings. Only a dimwit can’t appreciate that.

As Nick says in Post 136, “It was our call as to whether give them the full or reduced allocation – OUR choice. Well in fact Moxey’s”. And that’s the key point, Nick: ‘segregation issues’. The authorities would surely have accepted Wolves plea IF our beloved CEO had pushed the point. Alternatively, give up bloody home advantage and embarrass the FA in the process!

Imagine Pompey giving up their beloved Fratton End to Southampton fans. Yeah, sure they would! They’d rather have burned the place down than give it to their hated rivals, trust me. So, with due respect for yourself, please don’t insist that Moxey “had no choice” -yes he most certainly DID. He sold us down the river and, in the process, not only demonstrated poor judgement, but a total lack of empathy with Wolves fans, too. Events since that black day only confirm that he’s out of touch with the average fan. Actually, the whole club is -which is one reason why our fans are at each others’ throats on a regular basis. However, fans can vehemently disagree yet still be civil at the same time, though. Dignity is a choice, after all.

135 (Streako) – Thank you. Your kind apology is accepted, my friend, so we’ll put it behind us. We may not see eye to eye on every issue (who the hell does?) but, like you, I’m very dissatisfied with several issues down at Molineux, just now. I’ve never been a so-called ‘happy clapper’ and I’m not one of Mick’s so-called ‘numpties’, either. I’m just a fan who sits on the fence for the most part, calling it as I see it, whether good or bad. So, I’ve no axe to grind with anyone -I just post my feelings. I agree with your view about the fans’ parliament. It’s a complete waste of time, mate. Hand-picked individuals indeed.

There’s not much to be happy about right now, though, so it’s good that fans can let off steam via these columns.

Gotta be healthy, even if watching Mick’s Wolves aint ;-)

Gerald Ratner was a self made millionaire but he made the mistake of treating his customers with contempt which wiped £500m off his companys value and ultimately resulted in his firm disappearing from the high street.

If Jez Moxey was a savvy businessman then he would not be slagging off fans or be driving them away from the club by charging them premium rate phone lines and unjustifiable booking fees to order tickets. They may be able to get away with this when demand exceeded supply but “NEWSFLASH: Times are hard JEZ!”

failed :is that the fault of the customers
NO144 Kentish, A successful football club needs to develop ,buy and sell footballers. Successful clubs do that well,by and large we don’t.Moxey as Chief Executive must take some responsibility for that.He is not a football man,we badly need an experienced football man on our board to offer a balance to Moxey’s commercial approach.

Chris Hoggard – I totally agree with your reply to my 144 post, what i don’t agree with is that so many posters seem to think Moxey needs to be replaced by a football man, i don’t think he should be. Moxey is a good money man. John Richards, absolute legend on the pitch, but a very poor CEO.

You said the word “balance”….. that is the most imortant word in all of this & everybody, the club & the fans need to appreciate it.

    Outsider

As an outsider looking in I will respond on my view on some of the points mentioned.

    1) Wolves as a fanbase are very loyal alot of them have seen the very very lowest and highest ebs of english football and in this part of the problem resides. Some of the fans think that progress has been made since the bhatti brothers and that this is a pinacle while some fans namely younger ones have only seen success and rapid progress and assume this progress should be carried on. My friend is one of these sorts of fans and will blindly moan about mcarthy saying how useless he is how you club should be progressing at a much quicker rate. In my mind this is stupid look at the progress you have made look how far you have come since you could barely muster a team not even 6 years ago. From an outsider I feel while progress is needed some of your fans are forgetting that progress can only come if all partys want to go in the same direction

    2) The “South Bank” thing is still one of the biggest mistakes any CEO has ever made, he sold the heart of your support down the river and I will admit that if it was my club I couldnt stand you lot or the vile being in our main stad, it hurts and for some fans it is probably something which wont be forgotten. Mainly because wins and losses can be forgotten and overidden, but the fact that the team you obsessively hate were in your area your stand is unforegiveable

    3) The money moaning I just dont get, I will never understand wolves fans moaning about money, for god sake as a club you have seen the best and worse of money issues. In the mid 80s you had none not a pot to go wee wee in but through weeling and deeling and ultimately buying the best of unknown talent ie steve bull your forced your way up the leagues 10 years later you spent money willy nilly were top spenders in what is now in the championship for a good few years and went nowhere until again you were cash strapped started rooting round for the best young talent and got promoted and are currently in your third year in the prem in a stable condition adding premier league players every year without ever over exerting yourselves, lets be honest ten years ago you would of only dreamt of that

4)Finally with Mick Ive got to admit I think hes taken you far enough, theres no excitement about wolves while i still feel he is making progress it become tinged with a negative approach of ill take what ive got never gambling at any point never being brave. At no point from what ive seen this season havve i thought that at a draw you are going for the win even at home. The only point with which youve gone for it is when al seems lost against swansea. And thats not the attitude of a manager fighting to stay in the league thats the attitude of a manager scared of going down

But then what do I know Im just an outsider

firstly thank you ye olde south bank for accepting the apology

now to matters in hand aka kentish wolf

lets get a few things straight about stevemorgan who by the look of it you love as the messiah :

he buys wolves for a tenner on thee proviso he invests £30 million

ask your self has he ?

he invest a little in the team (birdseed)

he then rakes in the profit of wolves stopping up over 2seasons

he then decides to spend a little building a new stand whoopeeee !

he then decides to state we will build a new state of the art training ground complex plus we will build 40 new multi milion pound houses/flats onhat we can sell at a great proffit

he keeps his mouth shut completely when things get bad

remember at blackburn when he gave that rousing speach ON THE PITCH about staying up and INVESTING IN THE TEAM ? NOT THE GROUND !

he buys a piece of land on the waterloo rd knocks the car park down and leaves itas k yourself WHY ?

ASK YOURSELF WHY KENTISH WOLF TO ALL THESE QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR BELOVED CHAIRMAN AND HIS SIDE KICKS AND IF YOU CANT SEE THE ANSWER THEN YOU AND TE OTHER HAPPY CLAPPERS ARE MORE DELUDED THAN I FIRST THOUGHT

He is right. Look at the swansea game. MM makes a double substitution and the MAJORITY of the crowd start to boo and yell as if Lee Hughes had just walked on the pitch.

We score 2 goals to pull the game back to 2-2 then the south bank starts singing your not singing anymore at the swansea fans! I couldnt stop laughing, for the rest of the game the only time any wolves fans made any noise was to boo roger johnson or berate MM.
    That is fickle defined.

What happened to the days of supporting the team? We were 6-0 down at home to Southampton in 2007 and the South Bank were still singing MM name.

    Comical it is!

Let’s put the south Bank/WBA issue to bed:

    Moxey DIDN’T have a choice.

HOWEVER, he should have appeared – right from the outset – to be fightimg tooth and nail to prevent it.

He could have given the impression of grudgingly giving in when the FA threatened to hand the game to Albion unless we comply with the rules.

He didn’t do that because he didn’t appreciate just what the SB means to the fans.

And that’s because he can’t see beyond the dollar signs in front of his eyes!

Good money man he might be but he desperately needs someone to manage his PR.

Streako, if, as you claim, you do own your own business, then you’ll understand the importance of building said company on strong foundations. You’ll understand the need to put some of your profits aside each year just incase you have a period of poor trading. You’ll also understand the principle behind balance sheets (which Morgan’s £30 million sits on, strengthening the clubs position) and fixed assets, the more value there are in fixed assets, in the clubs case, the stadium & training complex, the stronger the club is in it’s foundations.

I noticed you decided/forgot to answer my question, maybe you’d just like to enlighten us what sort of ownership model you want Wolves to operate under ?

The new stand was always about more than just a few extra seats, if you’d bothered to actually read & listen to what the club were saying, as opposed to getting all bitter and twisted in your various conspiracy theories, you’d probably understand it
