Steven Fletcher told to prove his fitness by Wolves boss Mick McCarthy
Tuesday 22nd November 2011, 10:30AM GMT.
Wolves’ £7million club-record signing Steven Fletcher was today challenged to prove his fitness and win a recall against Chelsea.
Fletcher hasn’t played since October 1 because of a torn calf sustained in training in the build-up to the Black Country derby on October 16, but has fully recovered.
But manager Mick McCarthy wants to see the three-goal joint top scorer come through a full game in the second string against Arsenal reserves at AFC Telford tonight.
That would allay any concerns the Wolves boss has about the striker’s fitness, given the length of time he has been out.
Asked what Fletcher needed to do to win his place back, McCarthy said: “I want him to be fully fit having not played a game because he hasn’t played 90 minutes for a long time.
“If he does get that, then there’s every opportunity for him to get back into the side.”

What about proving you’re a good manager Mick??
This is just an excuse for Mick as Fletcher is not one of his favourites.
Funny when Edwards and co come back from injury, they are in the team next match.
This just gets worse!!
I’m sure he is fitter than the 5 mins he got on sat! We need fletcher on the pitch….. Easilly the most dangerous striker we have! Think MM needs to take his rose tinted glasses off…. We lost AGAIN to a team we should be competing with. 61-39% possession said it all not to mention 2 shots in 90 mins
Report abuse
Sooner they come back the better but it’s strange how some players have to prove their fitness after injury and others don’t !!!
Seems it’s a different approach to Zubar…
The French defender hasn’t played competitively since February because of back and groin injuries, but trained fully without reaction last week and could figure in a reserve line-up to play Arsenal at AFC Telford tonight
(McCarthy said: “It’s a blow to lose Stearman, but Zubar is coming back and he’ll play tonight so hopefully he’ll be ready to come back on Saturday because he’s the natural replacement)
surely we need to score some goals???? good to see Zubar may get a game, Fletcher back in and surely Jarvis to try and create something?????
what a complete plonker you are Mccarthy
A half fit Fletcher is better than a fully fit Doyle, wake up
Report abuse
I dont want to moan or indeed slag the manager off at all. I want Wolves to be as successful as possible. Im struggling to get over Micks comments after a game we had 1 shot on target, 1 corner and 39% possession though……….. Is this deluded thinking by him or are the majority of us missing something here?? Last night Villa had very similar stats at Spurs, granted they are better than Everton, however their manager even confirmed it was a bad night for his team……… I cannot see anything else a manager could say. And yet………. Micks delighted.
I’m not a negative numpty but this is strange… and your right, how come other players walk straight into the team? Fletcher is worth so much more than Doyle… he saved us last year and that alone should cement his place in the team. He is more likly to score than Doyle…. slight injury or not!
Trying not to read to much into it, could be a tabloid spin?
I said last week, if Fletcher is ‘fit and in form’ he would always play for me, as he’s clearly our best goalscorer at the club. But it may be just paper talk? But its a bit rich if its MM saying it, has he’s played 3-4 players in the past, and even this season who’ve come straight back in without proving their ‘fitness’ or only having played 45mins, or less in the reserves, then back in the first team next match up? Lets just hope Steven comes through the match ok. Because without him ,quite frankly we dont look like scoring most matches, he’s gives you something different from Doyle, who does a great job of holding the ball up, and playing on both channels, bringing other players into it ,but the downside to that, is he never gets into goal scoring positions, unlike Fletcher who’s always hanging around the back post waiting for a ‘cross or low pass’ to stick it in the net. Thats what i like about him, yes he doesn’t run here ,there and everywhere, but he’s excellent at what we bought him for,and thats to score ‘GOALS’ UTW:
There is no point in playing any player unless they are fully fit.
This was partly the problem for Kightly when he came back from injury last season and made no impact.
Hopefully both Zubar and Fletcher can get through 90 minutes tonight at Telford. We need both of them to play in Saturdays game, but only if they are fully fit. It’s likely to be an up-tempo game.
gives up now whos looking forward to the championship next year until mick goes thats where we are going moxey morgan wake up hes got to go
Report abuse
It must be difficult for him to replace the in form Doyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!
who else would leave there only goalscorer out mick
Report abuse
Surely he will be involved, at least for part of the game.

By the way, well said Tomwolf.

I find this very odd! Edwards is straight back in the team when he has been injured (more than just recently) Henry last year, once he was training again straight in the team. Jarvis, Doyle and Hunt last year? :S (might be a couple more?) Id imagine as soon as Stears is fit he will be straight back in and so would O’Hara.
I find it very strange and baffles me. Fletcher, Adlene, Zubar, SEB and Miljas all have to prove fitness but others don’t. Looks like one rule for some and another for others, doesn’t displace the theory he has his favourites does it?!
MM your statement is fine, if it was the same rule for everyone, you obviously don’t like fletcher, i seem to remember your favourites being put straight back in team without having to “PROVE THEIR FITNESS” Kightly? Edwards?
The fact is we need him on pitch but your struggling to find a place for him on field and NOT DROP DOYLE which in my opinion is well out of form.
Your rules only apply to certain players and it stinks!
AND A NOTE TO JOHNWOLF FROM YESTERDAY, TAKE OFF YOUR GOLD TINTED GLASSES PAL, THE MAJORITY OF WOLVES FANS I KNOW FEEL THE SAME AS I, YOU SAY IM THE DISEASE THAT IS TAKING THE CLUB DOWN??? TAKE A LONG HARD LOOK IN MM’S DIRECTION, I DONT BOO, I DONT SLATE PLAYERS I VOICE MY TRUE OPINIONS ON HERE TO HELP ME LET OFF STEAM, I DON’T SEE WHY I SHOULD LICK THE CLUBS BUM JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE MY TEAM, WHEN I CAN SO CLEARLY SEE WHAT IS THE PROBLEM, ITS NOT A TRUE FAN THAT SUPPORTS MEDIOCRITY! ITS A STUPID ONE!
Another contradiction from MM because his favourites do not have to prove their fitness at all.
Fletcher has nothing to prove as he is by far our best goalscorer and if he is not fit then why put him on the bench in the last couple of games.
MM WOULD CUT OFF HIS NOSE TO SPITE HIS FACE!
Fletcher has to start, he, not Henry should be first name on teh teamsheet! With likely defeats at Chelsea and Man U there is so much riding on the Sunderland game! With Mad Mick’s continued strange team selections, tactics and comments who can be confident of beating Sunderland? Not me. Surely no wins in teh next 3 would leave us in a massive mess! Morgan has to act and get rid of McCarthy!!!!!

Mick has been going in for treatment in the last few weeks for Hitleritis. It’s an illness where the patient believes that he is better than anybody else and that he can conquer the world. In fact the diagnosis showed that he is suffering from Moxleyitis which in other words means that he believes that he’s right even when he knows that he’s wrong. There is only one cure for a person in his state and that is Morganlism or as the doctors note says a P45.
Din’t stop you from starting Edwards when he has half fit did it Mick. Yet again 1 rule for 1 player another rule for another.
To all saying Edwards, Kightly etc get straight back in the team….Your wrong. Edwards played cup matches and reserves(x2/3) before he was fit. Kightly played 4/5 pre season friendlies. I would rather Fletcher fit, than rushed into it and being layed off for another month because he wasnt ready.
Some of you saying he has to start are wrong. You dont see him train everyday. Or even speak to him. For all you know Fletcher might have said he isnt ready yet.
GET A GRIP. Moaning for moaning sake…..
Anybody that thinks our team would be better off without Doyle is deluded the guy does so much work upfront holding the ball up and creating chances, yes he is not a natural goalscorer but that is why we have Fletcher who is a natural goalscorer the problem is we are unable to play our favourerd 442 because our defence is so poor fix that and we can go forward, conceeding 2 or 3 games a match is our main problem.Reintroducing Zubar should be a step in the right direction as Stearman is not a Prem quality.
“losing Stearman is a blow” I am sorry Mick he simply is not a premiership full back and if you think so you are seriously deluded.
JJ how did you know he was half fit? You must work at the club??
Tell Fletcher not to score and play on the wing
And please make sure he puts a shift in.

I think we must go 4-5-1 with Doyle up front at Chelsea and ensure Fletch is fit to return in a 4-4-2 against Sunderland.
Mick has got us into the premier league and kept us there for a 3rd season, so I will keep the faith.
I do wonder though why the 4-4-2 with Fletch and Ward up front that worked so well v Albion at home and Sunderland away at the end of last season, has not been used again…..
well lets get fletch on drop doyle deeper as he cant score and never has been able to since he arrived good at link up but not a threat
as i go on every week lets get the full back positions sorted and also sack MM and connor because if he thinks Stearman has been good this season then he shouldnt be a manager
again ward was caught out for the penalty and we are looking relegated already
Time to sweep the management out and half the playing staff sitting in an lovely looking empty stadium wont be pleasant mr Morgan
We pay to see a good team not a good stadium
we have had chances to strengthen but we seem quite happy to have the money and drop a division

THIS IS OUR PROBLEM ! !
THE SOONER EVERYONE REALISES THAT ALL THIS RUBBISH ABOUT DOYLE’S ALL ROUND GAME IS IRRELEVANT

Another E&S headline designed so that the Numpties can let off steam!!
1. Kiwiwolffff – take a look at MMs management record and you will see he can manage at both club and international level. Your comment is childish and foolish.
Yes we may not be happy with the immediate progress made this season but you can’t knock the progress made since the 3Ms came together.
Premiership football and major ground developments would have been a wild dream 5 years ago.
Be careful what you wish for….

All of you are right – MM needs to wake up & smell the coffee!!
He played Edawrds straight back in and Kitely was CERTAINLY NOT FIT when MM picked him in front of the in form Hammill!! A point proved by Kites going to Watford to improve his match fitness and form
The man is MAD MAD MAD MAD!!
Just go to Compton & watch training – these players are nowhere near as fit as others incliding the three newly promoted sides.
All you get from Jez Moxey is – ” All our players are better now they have Premiership expierience!” REALLY JEZ – LIKE WHO ???
Stearman, Berra, Henry??
Expierience is NO SUBSTITUTE FOR ABILITY AT THE TOP LEVEL , the sooner we adopt that policy we will then finish mid table, until then it looks odds on the we will be relegated by March!!!
Well, I think we have 2 choices here but we need the chairman (Mr Morgan)to give us guidance. I assume he is a real person (not just a phigment of my imagination). Firstly we need to know whether or not us fans are being unrealistic in expecting the club to improve in the quality & talent of the playing staff or whether we should just be satisfied with merely being in the Premier league. If the latter is the chairman’s intention the there is only one course of action. STOP wasting money on improving the stadium that you can’t even fill at the present & cut ticket prices & matchday costs (refreshments, program etc). I do mean cut, not freeze prices, the fans incomes are going down in real terms, not staying the same!
i agree with everthing CROWFISH says and i would add that i can’t see 3 worse teams than us and that we will be just about relegated before the new year if changes to the management team are not quickly made.

Actually it really does not matter who plays against Chelsea. We can not get a result with MM at the helm. Too negative, deluded, and inept at taking this team forward.
Sorry but we need change at the top. We need fresh ideas and the sooner the better as we might regret it later in the season.
MM OUT!

If you’re one of these ‘fans’ who, in your crazy little mind, think that Mick plays favourites and picks his teams on the back of that, why on earth would Fletch not be a favourite?? The man paid £7 million pounds for the guy!

A half fit fletcher has go to be better than the waste of space doyle we have up front…I thought a strikers role was to score goals…

What a load of rubbish. I think for Mick now he cant see the wood through the trees. Given the same amount of games for Fletcher as Doyle, I know who would score the most. I
I think Mick has had enough time now to prove his premiership credentials. Lets stop living in the past (i.e., championship winning season and survival) and move forward as club. Its getting a bit repetitive all this reminiscing about the golden years with Mick the muppet. UTW!

Sir Billy Quiet
Unfortunately the majority of fans are not as patient as yourself.
Expectations at Molyneux are high, but to attract fans you need to be inspiring the crowd base.
I have yet to see a good performance this year, including Wigan who were so poor. Admittedly i do not travel to Wolves away games but the comments are similar.
Fault surely lies at Morgans Door. Moxey and McCartney are under pressure to do his bidding, working within tight financial constraints.
Looking forward to a half completed stadium, half full watching Championship Football.
May start watching Bilston Town in future, at least may see some passion.

What do you expect when your talking about fitness, when the guy who’s in charge of fitness was never fit himself, it just gets better and better….

Hang the DJ: I’d question if Mad Mick see’s them train by the rubbish he dishes up! Surely watching them train would allow him to se ewhere players natural position is rather than playing them anywhere but!
Sir Billy Quiet: Looking at his record you can see he can manage players of a certain level, that being a third rate national team and Championship players. Yes, he can get 110% out of these guys which gets a limited amount of succes, but when the next step needs to be made he cannot attract/manage the next level to be anything other than relagation fodder in the Prem, Yes, he’s kept us up for three seasons but as we’ve seen before, teams who keep battleing at the bottom without progressing (which we are not doing) end up going down. Clubs who take the bold decision and try and progress the club move forward (Newc – Pardew. WBA – Hodgson)!
Let’s hope Fletcher will prove he’s fit in the reserves match against Chelsea. He’s much needed. Delighted to see Zubar back as well, but I think he should be playing in central defence against the Chelski reserves, and if it works out, also in the match on Saturday. Doherty in at RB.
McCarthy’s comments are at times laughable sometimes they are blunt and to the point but his last two comments just beggar belief.
His satisfaction with that pathetic display at Everton and now his non favoured players having to prove their fitness to get into the team on Saturday with, as others have pointed out, the likes of Edwards, Doyle, Henry and Kightly go straight in after long injuries.
I have stated before my feelings about MM.
His ability as a strategist is below that which is required of a top class manager. His results at the top level are the among the worst of the other Premier managers.
His reluctance to give youth a chance but nevertheless the results these lads are providing lately give credence to the selection of at least two of the current Wolves youngsters to the Premier team.
What has Scot Malone got to do to prove his selection chance? but one of Mick’s Irish contingent (Docherty) can get a game having come from an obscure Irish team not so long ago.
Above all this we have Moxey giving McCarthy his unstinted support and stating he will be at the Wolves, as Manager for years to come.
God help us all.
Morgan is more interested in leaving his legacy… a stadium of his design, than taking an interest in the Wolves stature as a football team.
As it currently stand we are a bit of a laughing stock as a football team. We cannot score enough goals to win matches and the defence is Championship standard.
In fact the team that is playing at the moment consists of seven or eight of the Championship winning team of three years ago and if McCarthy cannot see that most of them are not of Premiership standard then we will certainly go down.
Also as everyone knows MM cannot entice the quality players we need to survive because these players have no respect for MM’s ability to coach at this higher level.
I just despair and pray to God that some factor of realism will strike at Morgan as he is the only one who can get rid of this pathetic manager who can only see through his irish coloured sunglasses

22 – I suggest you get your facts correct before saying people are wrong!!
Edwards first game back was League Cup game against Man City on 26 October. The 3 reserve games before this date he DIDNT play!
The squads are as follows with dates –
Albion (4th Oct): De Vries, Zubar (capt), Reckord, Price, Ihiekwe, Ebanks-Landell, Kightly, Doherty, Cassidy, Hemmings, Hammill.
Subs: Ismail, McCarey, Bashford, Whittall, Kempton.
Villa (11th Oct): De Vries, Zubar, Ihiekwe, Price, Ebanks-Landell, Craddock, Ismail, Doherty, Ebanks-Blake (Kempton 77), Cassidy (Whittall 25), Hemmings.
Subs – Cranston, Coatman and Bashford
Chelsea (17th Oct): McCarey, Doherty, Reckord, Guedioura, Zubar (Ihiekwe 77), Craddock, Forde (Ismail 85), Price, Vokes, Hemmings, Gorman (McAlinden 57).
Subs – Ebanks-Landell and Coatman

Sir Billy Quiet is quite right: such headlines are intentionally designed to provoke reaction. It’s a newspaper, after all. That said, I’m not surprised that fans blow a gasket where MM’s concerned because his ill thought-out comments practically invite scorn. For what it’s worth, I tend to agree with the popular view of ‘It’s one rule for his favourites, but different for the rest’. Mick’s forced me see things that way, unfortunately.
SBQ, I take your salient point when you often say, “Be careful what you wish for”. However, as you must know, SBQ, it works both ways, my friend. For example, wishing to retain the services of a manager and/or coaching staff because we fear the consequences can, in itself, lead to destruction. I suppose it’s a risk you have to be prepared to take whichever way you go. Still, it’s out of our hands. That decision will rest with Morgan, ultimately.

I just don’t understand McCarthy, he plays Edwards as soon as he can walk, but Fletcher who along with SEB is our best chance of scoring goals has to prove he is fit?
If you stood either of them in the 6 yard box on one leg with a brief to score goals, we would probably do better than we are game in and game out
We had one, yes one shot on goal!!
It really is time a change of manager was made, interestingly Kightly said he was happy to stay at Watford mainly because the medical staff had really helped him?
Guess that’s the end of his carrer here.
I feel for all those who made the trip to see the game on Saturday and with the intention of the manager to play like this in the future perhaps they should consider whether it’s worth the journey and expense in the future.
He has no regard for the fans at all.
I hope that Stearman is not too badly injured, and when he is fit to play perhaps our illustrious Manager will bring him in his natural position at CB alongside Johnson.

Mike got the grit and the motivation to get the most out of the team he has but when you need that little bit of tactical nous to change a game he’s completely lacking.
Occasionally it works such as Swansea game but more often it doesn’t, he should bite the bullet and start different players when others are not performing.
Different players and different injuries require different treatment. Anyone not fully conversant with the facts involved would be better not commenting. I have no idea how fit Fletcher was at the weekend or Zubar is now. So better trust the medical staff.
However Kightly definitely was not match fit when he came back – maybe he’s Irish?
No doubt in my mind now that Wolves are in real trouble. To be “delighted” with a defeat at Everton is poor PR and asking for trouble. These latest rather thoughtless comments have a similar effect. McCarthy is a decent man who works hard but I suspect that he and the Clipboard have no real idea how to rise from the depths we have sunk to. Is anyone out there really confident that we can beat anybody right now or before season’s end with the team we have?
I have an awful feeling that it’s 5 in the against column at Chelsea and probably similar at Manky Yew. All the teams around us in the table are very capable and have the squads to get out of trouble. Not sure Wolves have. I read the other day that Wolves are supposed to be considering a couple of loan players in the transfer window. Is that a committment to progress? I think not.
There will be no more Wigan false dawns and let-offs. It feels to me that the set-up is being made ready for the Championship and it looks pretty gloomy. Where are things heading Mr Morgan? Downwards, and fast.

Well said Lesterwolf (43). Very well put, succinct and to the point. Of course more people agree with you, about what exactly?
Here’s the things that I know and have an opinion on:
1. We love the Wolves
2. We are all disappointed with this seasons results.
3. Wolves are in their third season as a Premiership club.
4. Wolves only managed one season in the Premiership before McCarthy took over.
5. Since Morgan came to the club we are stable financially and are investing in both the stadium and players.
6. MMs win ration in the Premiership is woefull but it has been enough to keep us up twice.
7. If we are in the bottom 3 at Christmas he should offer to resign or be sacked.
MM will always be a legend at Wolves but their are a significant number who did’nt want him from day one and hate the fact that he has proved them wrong.

I don’t wish to be pedantic here, but it was the club -not Mick McCarthy himself- that paid the £7m transfer for Stephen Fletcher. Accordingly, the size of fee paid is not -and cannot possibly be- directly proportional to Mick’s interest in playing him as you suggest.
Of course, had Mick paid for the transfer from his own, personal fortune….well, that would be a different story entirely, my friend.

Am hearing from my fellow Wolves fans about this protest march before the Sunderland game! Looks like it’s on from all the chatter. Let’s keep it peaceful and to the point and we will have the moral high ground. Any one aiming on making trouble should keep away!
Looks like shirtpuller Berra has opened his mouth again about the Chelsea game saying that if Wolves keep possession they will have a chance!!!!!!!!!!!
What a funny guy he is! Which bit of ‘I wish the players wouldn’t open their mouths and say they will do this and they will do that’ does he not understand?!!! It is on the pitch for 90 mins is where they should do the talking within their limited skill and ability and try for a result on Saturday!

Fletcher on one leg playing 20 minutes a game would be more of a threat than Doyle has served up all season!!! Doyle plays way too far from goal and frequently too wide to pose any real threat to Premiership level defenders. Doyle’s strike rate is below one goal every three games on both a career and Wolves basis. Not good enough I am afraid – yes, he works hard and all that but we need goals. There are no points for trapping the ball!!!
MM seems to be competely off target with his comments this week ( more so than usual). How he could be satisfied with that performance against Everton is beyond me.

Personally I welcome the comments made by Jez Moxey at the fans parliament, that they are reviewing the next phase of the ground redevelopment because ,amongst other things, they need to get the balance right between investing in the ground infrastucture and investing in the team. The last thing we want is to be in the Championship with debts around our neck to fund a stand that we cannot fill.Messrs Morgan and Moxey please get this important decision right.

I do not believe our players are worse than any team outside the top ten, they are badly managed and coached.I do believe that there is every day a growing number of fans getting more and more frustrated. For the last few years we have done what has been expected but this season the managment has definately lost the plot.I have come to the point after his ouutburst against the supporters that while he is in charge with his negative tactics that i now no longer seem to care about the club.Week after week we lose and yet he says we play well,he then comes out with certain players need to prove there fitness yet how can this be when they dont get a look in the side.We want to be entertained,we pay good money probably similar to the likes of man city and united yet how much value is our product compared to theirs.not looking forward to being in the bottom 3 for the rest of the season after saturday

We keep bleating on about a change but can you see it happening, look at last year how many managers in far better positions were sacked for lack of progress. I would take Chris Houghton right now, i may get slated for saying it but i think he’d keep us up and be able to build a good established squad. If he’s not going to get the tin tac then fgs get him a quality coach to help as we seem deviod of ideas, and it does the teams confidence no good at all keep leaking goals at an alarming rate. sorry but its hard to keep the faith at present – as all i can see is the relegation dogfight looming again.
Mr Morgan – we need to spend some serious money in January, but who are you going to able to attract in a bottomn 3 position….

Numpty idea# 221. Put Fletch on at the start of the match until he gets knackered. Then substitute him for a lesser player, instead of wearing him out against Arsnel reserves. May as well use him in 1st team while he’s getting fit..?..?

The first post by Kiwiwolfffff and all of the following posts tell the tale (again) in response to MMs comment: Asked what Fletcher needed to do to win his place back, McCarthy said: “I want him to be fully fit having not played a game because he hasn’t played 90 minutes for a long time. If he does get that, then there’s every opportunity for him to get back into the side.” What about Kightley, Edwards, Henry, Doyle etc. Did they have to prove their fitness after similarly long layoffs Mick? I think not. And where is Hammill? And why is young Sam playing for a bottom Championship side when we cannot score goals? Why does Seb not get a chance? So many questions that are never answered! #14 Solentwolves – yes, he will figure in some of the game (probably the final 4 minutes or so). Well said #17 crowfish. #22Hang the DJ – what a load of crock! Final comment – I was intrigued by the comment that Zubar is the natural replacement for Stearman! My guess is, if Stearman was not injured Zubar would not get a sniff even though he is a far better defender. A replacement? Please Mick if there was ever a need for a replacment we all know who it should be for!

Had to respond to Sir Billy who commented – “Kiwiwolffff – take a look at MMs management record and you will see he can manage at both club and international level. Your comment is childish and foolish”. Sir Billy I can tell you love the club but haven’t you been reading the win-loss ratio statistics posted on here recently regarding MMs record. If you had then you would see that it is appalling and hence your comment is both inane and groundless. If you love the club as you seem to then surely, you would be concerned over MMs record and the future for WWFC. By the way I agree MM can manage at club level – but that level being Championship club level not Premiership level.

Who are WBA, you might consider Jack’s posts to be drivel my friend, but if you are happy with your team’s performance against Everton you’ve got problems. At the moment Wolves are a laughing stock, even your fellow Wulfies are saying as much.

83 mickout – I was not praising Doyle – whose record for Wolves cannot be defended – my comment was to answer ’64 the crunge’ question, nothing more!

Agree with 29 Martin. Like I have been saying since last season,Doyle has been a £6.5 million waste of space. Two goals in 12 league matches means his final predicted league goal tally ratio is a massive 6.3 Well worth another contract eh Mick?
Sorry folks, with this manager, there is only one way the team is going. Not as it bothers Moxey or Morgan when they know there will always be suckers ready and waiting to cough up their £40 on a regular basis.
We all want improvement but we won’t get it by keep turning up and paying the money. All it does is tell the management that they can carry on regardless. You have to stay away and lance the boil. All they are interested in is the cash and only when they see it draining away will they take action.

Notice this morning that Woy Hodgson has given Odemwingie a wake up call.
Rather than keep telling these players how good they are, Woy has told him to get his finger out! not prove your fitness!
How refreshing to hear.

91 – Barnes 1959 spot on mate. I hate losing (every week) & I really fear that we are going to go the same way as West Ham last season, they supported Avram Grant till they were relegated. Our friends up the road dumped the Italian & brought in Woy – good move Baggies & now Woy has given PO a serve for his fitness. What do we get ” delighted with the performance from another defeat” – I have really tried to work out our game plan & now I can see where Henners is coming from. He doesn’t only have to stop goals being scored, he also “hoofs” the ball up trying to catch the opposing goalie napping (needs more work) cos he knows none of our outfield players can score bless him!
Seriously, how bad had it got to get before change happens, protest if you must but keep it civil & polite. Why oh why when we are short of sttikers did he allow Sam Vokes go to Burnley. He scored 2 for Wales, came on against Swansea & made things happen. Why did we buy this boy? More to the point why did we buy Adam Hammil, Nenad Millias, Steven Fletcher, SEB – some bloody explaining needs to be done. Kightly to Watford yes for game time. What had happened to our youth. Danny Batth, Scott Malone, Zeli Ismail, Sammy Winnall, Anthony Forde, David Davis & Matt Doherty – now we are being linked with Danny Collins (Ipswich) ex-Sunderland yet again.
I do have respect for what Mick has done but like many on here believe it really is time for change to freshen up. Come on Steve Morgan you would not for one minute accept this from your Redrow Managers – why accept at your & our great football club. We don’t want relegation end of! Wolves forever & ever.

90 (Wight Wolf) – Doyle’s goal ratio speaks for itself, my friend -and it’s very poor indeed. So, no argument there. If you’re not a fox in the box, and you spend most of your time out wide, you’re never going to score goals. So, why does Kevin do it? McCarthy’s instructions, I assume, because nothing else makes any sense! If Kevin is not following Mick’s instructions, he’d be out the team, surely? I think we’re paying the price for a lack of quality in all departments, hence being unable to play 4-4-2 or other, attacking formation. Doyle’s ability to hold up the ball is utterly wasted -he needs a partner, whether it’s Sylvan, Fletch, whoever. We’re too weak, though -yet Mick built this squad and was happy with it. Personally, I think Doyle’s still a class act -it’s just that he’s entirely wasted in a shambolic team. My thoughts only, though, so don’t shoot the messenger, lol!

During the Beacon commentary of the Everton game, Robbie Dennison questioned why O’Hara, when placing the ball to take a free kick, felt the need to look at the bench for instructions on what to do. He said he thought it was pretty obvious at that stage of the game what to do.
This highlights my view of McCarthy’s management style – he’s authoritarian. It also explains why the likes of Hammil, Milijas, Guediora and others can’t get a regualr place and also why Mark Davies left to go straight into Boltons’ team and win MOTM on his debut. They need freedom to express theirselves. McCarthy stifles that.
I remember when Micky Gray made an error that resulted in Wolves conceding a goal. He looked at the bench and knew what was coming. He was substituted and subsequently lost his place in the team.
Our players play with fear. Not fear of the supporters reaction, but fear of the manager. They are frightened of not only making mistakes but also of not doing what McCarthy tells them.
This, I think, explains why our players are so predictable and lack flair. In the Championship they played with freedom and were not only entertaining but also succesful.
Compare McCarthy’s in match style to that of other managers, it oh so different. It is pasionate but also instils fear into the players.

On another more jocular note. As Christmas is fast approaching I have been thinking of what presents to give our team.
McCarthy – a harness to keep him in his chair.
Doyle – stabilisers to stop him falling over all the time, and a sat-nav to direct him towards the goal.
Berra – a straight-jacket to prevent him grabbing the opposition
O’Hara and Henry – a longer piece of the string that ties them together (they’re hardly ever more than 5ft apart in midfield)
Johnson – a John Cleese video so he can copy the silly walk perfectly. He hasn’t quite mastered it yet.
Any other suggestions?

we need Fletcher back ASAP, he is our only genuine goal threat but we need himback for the long term. if fit i’d hapily see Doyle in one of the wide berths against chelsea along with Jarvis on the right. Jarvis gave Cole a tough time last years so he already have a bit of an advantage over him. alternately play Doyle in a much more withdran central role. Doyle has obvious quality but he doesnt carry enough of a goal threat, this makes life easier ofr opposition defenders and invites more pressure on our midfield then ultimately the defence.

I peruse the football gossip/rumour columns on a daily basis. OK they are only gossip/rumour, but I see that most teams including that lot down the road are purported to be signing, not loaning “quality players”. What do I see for US? a Liverpool 3rd team player that has been loaned out to all and sundry and an ex Cardiff reject now turning out for Leeds. Come on Big Mac and the Fat controller raise the ante because if you don’t it it’s BYE BYE Premiership and about 10/15000 FICKLE FANS.
