Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Everton 2 Wolves 1
Saturday 19th November 2011, 5:10PM GMT.
Wolves’ revival suffered a jolt as they went down to a just-about-deserved defeat to Everton.
In a poor game, it was a tale of two penalties as Stephen Hunt put Mick McCarthy’s side in front in the 37th minute and Leighton Baines grabbed the winner from the spot on 83, after his free kick was headed in by captain Phil Jagielka a minute before the break.
There was little doubt about either penalty as Marouane Fellaini tripped David Edwards for the first, before Stephen Ward shoved Louis Saha to the ground for Everton’s.
It was also harsh on Ward, who had saved a certain goal when he produced a superb point-blank block from Cahill in the 70th minute.
In a game of few chances, goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was Wolves’ man of the match for a highly assured performance in which he produced a fine save to palm away Saha’s first-half volley, catching a stream of crosses before and after.
Along with the result, which means Wolves haven’t beaten Everton in seven Premier League meetings, McCarthy’s side suffered another blow.
Defender Richard Stearman suffered what appeared to be a broken hand after falling awkwardly following an aerial challenge with Tim Cahill.
McCarthy made one change to the side that beat Wigan 3-1 two weeks ago with the return of Nenad Milijas for Adlene Guedioura in midfield, for only the Serbia international’s second Premier League start of the season.
The big news from the Everton camp was that Jack Rodwell was absent from the 18 after making his full England debut in midweek, with what was claimed to be a stomach pull.
Both teams played cagey and looked a little nervy for most of the first-half, as befits the struggles each team has had in recent games.
The only noteworthy action before the goals came when Hennessey brilliantly tipped over a bouncing volley from Saha from the edge of the six-yard box, after Cahill headed down a cross by Seamus Coleman.
A largely forgettable first-half only livened up when Wolves won a penalty in the 37th minute, after Fellaini stuck out a leg to trip Edwards.
Hunt stepped up to confidently smash the ball down the middle, sending goalkeeper Tim Howard the wrong way for his second conversion in as many away games after his strike at Manchester City.
Everton, who had had by far the most of the play without threatening, equalised a minute from the break when Jagielka rose above Roger Johnson to head home Baines’ superb free kick.
The first part of the second half mirrored much of the first with little incident.
But Wolves had to make a change in the 59th minute when Stearman was forced off with what appeared to be a broken right hand.
George Elokobi replaced him, meaning yet another position change for Stephen Ward at right-back.
Everton had plenty of possession and forced numerous crosses, but presented little danger to the visiting defence.
And, as the half wore on, there was no shortage of frustration expressed by the Goodison Park crowd.
Everton thought they had earned the breakthough in the 70th minute, though, only for Ward to produce a superb block to stop a certain goal to deny Cahill, after Seamus Coleman beat Elokobi to cross and Saha flicked on.
From conceding a penalty to go behind in the first-half, the home side took the lead with one in the second.
It was another which didn’t look a difficult decision to make for the referee to make, as Ward clearly pushed Saha to the ground as they challenged for a Royston Drenthe’s corner.
Baines stepped up to roll the spot-kick to Hennessey’s right to put Everton in front.
Wolves only had a free kick from Jamie O’Hara, which whistled just wide in injury-time, to show for their efforts after that.

Oh well…. nevermind. Bring on Chelsea! =)
I’v gotta say i’v just been listening to Beacon with the after match phone calls… God I feal so depressed listening to them one man in particular such a droning voice! so negative. They must love being down. But if we had of won today we would have gone 9th!!!!! it just shows how close it still is and it’s not all bad! we lost from a penalty! it’s not like we were thrashed 6-0… come on guys get you heads up and look on the bright side! we are playing in the premiership… enjoy it. The guy on the phone said we are joint worst team with Wigan… how can you say that being a fan. I had to switch off because i was reaching for the pills…. I still think we will stay up and there are worse teams than us in the prem.
Hope we do get some more players in January
In Mick We Trust!!! Com’On Wolves!!!

First of all let me say I didn’t see the match today. Put it down to depression and very little faith.
My comment today is how come you could get odds of 5-1 on a Wolves win against a team who were below us in the league?
Even the bookies have no faith in this team.
Says it all to me.
Is this the start of another run?
YES

Is it the manager or is it the players? We were useless and i`ve had enough.

Other than the Penalty we did not have one
shot at goal. Far to defensive, Hunt, O,hara,
very poor again.Half way through the second half Everton were crap, should have took Hunt
off and put Fletcher on to create pressure,
instead of the ball keep coming back.Far to negative no positive moves by MM. Stephen Ward
becoming a class act at either left or right
back. yet again made a superb block on Cahill
to stop a certain Goal.Fair play to him he,s
certainly our player of the year so far.

A very disappointing display against a poor Everton side. MM brought Jarvis and Fletcher on when it was too late and he should not be playing Elokobi when he’s simply not fit. Poor tactics and we need more quality. This is Championship football at best. MM has taken us as far as he can, but its not good enough. Time to move on MM, sorry.
Boring, clueless Wolves! No idea, back to Heno lump it up the field same old same old rubbish. 1 shot at goal and that was the penalty! So much for being back on track, Chelsea here we come…God help us!
How much longer do we have to suffer these Mick inspired performances?? I you don’t have a shot at goal then you won’t win games, simple really. We got what we deserved which was nothing.
No Jarvis- clueless decision.
Edwards waste of time.
O’Hara awful.
Doyle pointless.
McCarthy Out.
What a stupid headline after one win.Mick out!!
Well this clueless Managers pep talk on “siezing the day” really worked eh?
Does he have any other tactical knowledge other than backpassing to the keeper (Saved us from further embarrasment)and booting up field? One shot on goal sums it up. I could not tell what the plan was. Were we playing for a draw? did Everton put up a force field that made us shy away from attacking?
I don’t blame the players. Responsibility falls on this tactically inept management team. They need to go now.
If Mick is the straight/ honest talker he pretends to be, he should take his demand to Sep Blatter and resign himself.

Another pathetic display today.Good old Mick.he really knows how to ruin people’s weekends. The total embarrassment and humiliation of being a Wolves fan carries on unabated…….

Moxey, his job is not under threat, well it should be, we may splash the cash in January, too late, we are back in relegation zone.
We got away with it at Wigan, today we didn’t. Played this stupid game of one up front again against a struggling team we will never take points like this.
Henry poor again today, nearly cost us a couple of goals, Edwards another favourite enough said, and a push from Ward which was a shame for him but if you do it in the penalty area then that’s waht happens.
Selection, tactics, etc, etc,
Excellent game from Hennessey or it would have been a sound beating.
McCarthy’s fault again, or Moxey?
1 shot on Goal. thats all i have to say :(
Report abuse
“Moxey confessed he thought the club wouldn’t have struggled because the management felt the squad was stronger.”
one day, the penny will drop that we are still a long distance from quality. hugh and puff and good shifts aside, we really are kidding ourselves . what are we trying to achieve as surviving is not pretty , oh well , C’mon Wolves
Report abuse
Nothing changes. As for talk of a revival, well, seems to me the only one who saw it was MM and his mate Moxey. Said it before and will keep saying it, we need a new manager before it is too late.
Mick felt we deserved something from the game talking on radio after the game well he is clearly watching something different we did not deserve anything from the game today, a pen yes one but that was it going forward and we should conceded a pen in first half with Karl Henry’s pull back on Tim Cahill. So it evens out in a way, I dread what lies ahead at the Bridge in West London next game.
Away from home is tough but we could of got something today if we had a go particularly getting a pen and a lead, have to see how we do against Sunderland next home game if its bad then well i don’t think know one at the club has bottle to sack Mick but with these players we should in my opinion be doing better, what did O’Hara do today? Nothing, Milijias nothing sadly, Doyle, he’s going backwards and Johnson poor again Berra showed more pace than the skipper today oh dear. It could of been worse so, maybe I need to take a chill pill but with out doubt if nothing is done in January then are screwed. Hopefully I am wrong.
Revival suffers a jolt! What revival? We will be bottom of the league mid December. Hope Mr Moxey has a plan, cos it strikes me no one else at the club seems to.
Don’t know what to make of that at all. Only two shots on goal, oneof them the penno, the other O’Haras almost free kick. Doesn’t bode well for the “Sieze the day” call does it?
We weren’t exactly “up for it” in my book. I expect I’ll be called negative, fine wih me if the happy clapper will admit our tactic were too. Amen
Report abuse
I thought we could have got at least a draw today, i had even thought we may sneak a win. But i did say whenever we’ve played Everton home/away, its always been a hard game, and today’s was no different, (last time we won there was in 1979 1-0 Andy Gray scored). It wasn’t a classic ,it sounded like another bottom of the League clash, with two very nervy sets of players. It seemed like Hennessey yet again played very well, it also sounded like Berra and Ward made some well timed tackles, saving clear cut goals, although some people say Ward gave away a clumsy penalty away, having not seen the game i cant add to what i heard. Johnson seemed to have a very good first-half, but picked up a knock, and you didnt hear much of him in the second-half so much. Our midfield didnt seem to do alot or create alot. But whilst i like Doyle for his workrate, im disappointed with his goal ratio,’imo’ i think whenever Fletcher is fit and in form he should always start home/away no matter what system we play,id put Doyle behind him or wide in a 4.5.1. or both players in a 4.4.2. but you cannot allow your ‘best natural goalscorer’ to being sitting on the bench when FIT. It looks like Stearman will be out for a few weeks as he’s broken his hand,i hope Zubar is fully fit or very near it,as he wasn’t on the bench today? If not id like to see Doherty given another chance i dont want MM putting Ward at RB and Elokobi at LB, thats not the answer. I do fear its going to another massive struggle to stay in the BPL unless we get wins against Sunderland/Stoke/Norwich, as we will be very lucky to get anything from the Chelsea / Man Utd games. Jez Moxey says we’ve got money to spend still, im not keen on the January transfer window, because if your down the bottom end ,its harder to attract the right players, plus if you buy the players in the summer they’ve got time to settle in and understand the way the team plays, and also gives you a better chance of picking up points,at the start of the season. But JM said MM was ‘happy’ with the ‘three’ he had signed, and with his squad in general? Ive NEVER yet heard a manager say he doesn’t want MORE players has anyone else? UTW:

I am just sick of it all . Wolves playing in the number one league in the world with a second rate championship and relegated P.L. player team ineptly managed by a third rate limited ability manager given tacit silent approval by a quiet -on-all- matters chairman who seems content only to build a larger stadium to accomodate a non attending and dwindling fan base . Just what does this club , on the field , have to offer ? Very , very little to the long suffering fans . Last saw Wolves play in a cup final in 1988 . Nothing since . Does anybody else feel that the club is drifting towards the championship due to a lack of decisive leadership at most levels ?

39% posession, 1 shot on target, 3 shots off target, in 90+ mins against a struggling Everton – Mid table finnish???????
Desperate for Fletcher to come back and he comes on at 80mins????
Mick’s not unhappy with the way we played. Well I am. We played a struggling team and we had no ambition other than to draw. We should try to win games against teams around us. The only time we actually attacked them was in the last 10 minutes when we were a goal down. I can’t understand the lack of confidence in going for three points against these teams, I can’t understand our top scorer being left out when he’s fit and I can’t understand how our most creative player starts on the bench now he’s had his ‘rest’. I guess this all makes me a mindless idiot.

just so you can say i told you so and therefore pretend that you are all now champions league managers.
well, when you wake up in may 2012, wwfc will be safe in mid table in the premiership, and you will have to wait for the first defeat of the pre season friendlies to call for the managers head.
and to make matters worse, a pathetic performance by bolton will encourage jack the hat to post his jibes even more,(not that he needs any encouragement).

“And if you know your ‘istory” which the previous correspondent clearly doesn’t, you’d know we beat Everton 3-2 in 1979. Sorry to be so pedantic but anything to deflect attention from another depressing performance. Going to Chelsea next week but can’t for the life of me think why. Still, west London’s got its fair share of nice boozers and the Christmas lights might be worth a butchers.
Again a depressing show against a depleted Everton side who did nothing very spectacular either. If we cannot win against the last six teams, or at least draw, the verdict is a very simple one to expect. Relegation to the lower division. To my mind the problems are quite some: Late substitutions, bad positional play, weak midfield, nearly non-existent attack. We need to buy badly and yes, change the manager. This Wolves team has no bite and seems really lifeless. I can safely say that it does not even seem an english squad so much it lacks the necessary energy which distinguishes english football.

Have to agree with many of the comments on here tonight, Ect; Outclassed by a very poor Everton side,One shot at goal,Brings Jarvis and Fletcher on 10 minutes from time when we aint had a shot at goal all match,Blame johnson on 2 accounts for the first goal one for giving a needless free kick away and two not attacking and shying away from the ball when the cross came in Stearman? Elokobi?Did Jim ull fix it to be in this Wolves side? Bi Heaven these two will or are never going to be footballers Sorry Mick after watching tis dross again I really still think you should do one.
Too early to panic but I thought MM should have been a bit positive with his substitutions prior to conceding the second goal.
I’ve not been a Ward fan but I’m he’s growing on me due to his sheer effort regardless of where MM plays him. Is there another player in the PL who has played LB, RB, central and wide midfield and forward?
One shot at goal and our best forward on the bench until the 86th minute. Someone explain.
MM doesn’t know what to do. I hear all the pro MM fans, no, I’m not saying he should go but he needs help. Terry clipboard doesn’t seem to do anything to help, maybe just agree.
Why leave your top striker on the bench. If the young right back was okay a few weeks ago, why not now? If AG was good enough to start the last match, why not now (I know he had a stinker). Why continue with Hunt? What on earth is Elokobi doing in the first team squad.
It was looking good for one point. Then why take off the only player who can hold the ball for more than 10 seconds.

Awful.
Hennessey was our best player. We’d have been thrashed out of site without him. Ward, though I’ve never rated him before, was the next best. Why oh why do we persist with Doyle? Craig Mackall-Smith at Brighton works harder.
Stearman gets injured and Micko brings on Elokobi who was skinned every time. Not only skinned, embarrassingly too. What utter tosh. “Seize the day” Mick? Why don’t you keep it shut? Not only do you talk rubbish you serve it up as well. Truth is you don’t know what you’re doing. Neither do the other two M’s by Moxeys own admission, today. Come on Morgan. I cheered as we climbed out of the lower leagues . I have not made any judgement on MM til this season . I do not and never have played computer games based on football . Roughly 40 years of going 100 miles and back to games at the Mol does not make me anti Wolves . Plainly for all to see , there is a big problem with the playing staff and manager at our club which goes on season after season . No one at the Club appears to be willing to make any changes .Same old tired cliches same old lack of leadership . I am not a happy Fan .

Is it me or does MM base all his tactical knowledge on the workings of a certain Nelson Muntz? One wonders just how cringeworthy and God awfull his post match interviews will become over the next few months,in short this man should only ever hold the position of a trainer/coach and leave the management to someone with a bit more to offer than just 1980′s hoof ball/puts a shift in nonesense. If football was a performance based business MM wouldn’t earn enough to pay the milkman and that’s been proven by his statistical record during his tenures at Sunderland and Wolves respectively. One day this ‘Muntz’ character will be gone,i just hope we are still in the premiership when that day arrives.

A purely defensive effort that came unstuck against a lackluster Everton side. When Hennessey is our man of the match it says it all really, doesn’t it?
We had one legitimate shot on goal in the entire match and that was a penalty!!! And it was a questionable call at best!!!
Our back four worked hard but the midfield and attack failed to create anything in the entire match.
As i mentioned in a previous post if MM was to be exonerated he needed to come away from this game with at least a point and we failed. Not only that we were never a threat on Everton’s goal.
Fletcher, if fit, has to start every game as he seems to be the only player that makes any real attempt on goal.
Moxey says MM has money to spend at Christmas. – well I hope the Club has deep pockets as we need at least four new players with Prem pedigree!!!

This has now got to the stage of an unending purgatory, it’s really becoming hard to function in any sense as what I distantly recall being; a football fan.
Doyle is simply awful; it’s irrelevant what he did in the distant past. O’Hara runs around like a headless chicken. Stearman was not good enough in the Championship. Elokobi was not even good enough for the Championship. Henry is a mediocre journeyman, etc, etc.
I am not being negative to these players, they all give 100% and I respect that, it’s not personal.
So to lead to the obvious point. The manager is genuinely awful. The team is actually getting worse and there doesn’t appear to be any plan, sense or basic aim in the club as a whole. There has been money but it has generally been poorly spent.
Please end this now, please, please….
Let me quote George Orwell in his masterpiece Nineteen Eighty Four, “If you want a picture of the future , imagine a boot stamping on a human face-forever”. That how watching this team now feels.

If Everton’s final ball was any good we would have lost by 4 or 5, that was a massacre in terms of a one-sided football match.
To summarise – Tim Howard could literally have watched the game on the TV and he still would have had more to do adjusting the volume than he did on the actual pitch. Pathetic.
It’s time for a change.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to work out why Wolves lose so many matches and ship goals with such alarming regularity. It’s our woeful defence which is Championship level at best. What we need is a couple of quality loan signings in the January transfer window. Maybe even a permanent purchase as there is money available apparently. Hennesey and Ward are excellent. But are surrounded by very poor players. If a bit of quality steel was added at the back. Wolves could turn quite mean and hard to beat. The leaky defence has to be addressed or it’s going to be a very bleak season indeed!
I saw most of the game on my pc, albeit with a very poor quality picture that was matched only by the desperate quality of football offered up by both sides. What little there was to enthuse about came from Everton and Wolves pre-occupation with punts from deep in their own half to the opposing defenders allowing them to start more attacks was numbingly disappointing, and not a little embarrassing. After all, the Prem is reckoned to be the best league in the world – it may be right at the top but by the time you get to the also rans it has gone down the drain.
Surely to heaven Wolves can’t practice all week to come up with those schoolboy-like kick and rush tactics? For all the world they looked to be preparing themselves for a go at kicking themselves out of the Championship next year.
Very, very depressing.
How many times will we have to suffer MM in his post match interview saying, ‘We deserved something’, eh? For God’s sake! Is nobody listening or concerned in this inept, cluless, lack of ambition, speechless, lack of team investing management/owner, team? What does it take for them to open the holes under their noses and SAY something, other than we should have won or we deserve something, they played better than us! This Team is clearly NOT good enough, NOT skilfull enough, not tactically aware enough to compete and get the right results. Each week now is the bloody same, same old names, same unbelievable hype, and boring, mundane, predictable tactics! For the life of me, I do not wish to read the crap from the players that they wish to kick start their season, or how well they did for their international team etc.
Ward lost us the game by pushing Saha over! You Sir are a pratt for doing that! You should know better. It seems that all we are is a bunch of shirt pullers and foulers as we are inferior and lack skill. The camera and statistics never lie!
Who believes Moxey when he says they will splash cash in Jan 2012? I for one do not! A wolf in sheeps clothing that man! He says one thing but backs it up with a get out clause! Should make a good politician!
Chelsea next week, holy moses! It will cost a months salary to go there and watch them give us the coupe de grace! If we do go down to the fizzy, I, as well as a lot of other fans will expect us to get back to some solid basics and build again! For one, a new management team, new CEO, and new team! Will we finish mid table? hard to see it with this team and this performance!
Somebody out there take us out of this misery, please!

Does anyone know whay our “style” of play is?
Nothing from midfield, Hopeful punts upfield for Doyle to do what with? Lay it off? Lay it off to who?
There is no way the players are enjoying this spell any better than the fans. Someone had better do something quick before we lose the players oompletely.
Just watched the Swansea game against United. The Swansea players are no better than ours in any position, but there is a tactical plan yhat gives them a chance to play to their qualities. If they go down it will not be because of a tactically inept manager.
Surely MM has to go. I watch just about every premier league game every weekend and don’t see any other team turn in the consistently unimaginative and disappointing performances that us Wolves fans have to put up with.
It’s grim!

I’ve said it many times, we’re a good Championship side operating above our station. How many of our players would get into an average mid table Prem Team? Not many….. Oh and by the way, 1 shot on target against a strugglin side is awful. People say all sorts of things about us Wolves fans but Our lack of ambition and quality is truly hard to accept. We dont seem to ever get at teams and have a go. The Wigan game was awful. Yes we’re in the Prem and yes we remember the bad days in Lge 4 etc… But last time i checked football was a game with the objective being to try to win matches!!! I’m sick of Sunday/Monday blues…. Mick/Gez appreciate greatly getting us to the Prem but really, u ran out of ideas a long time ago. Unless u go or splash some cash and start having a go at teams we’re down in May, no doubt.

It’s difficult to conceive of a “decent performance” as reported by Mick and the other diehards which is consistent with 25% first half possession?
Yet more poor defending from 2 restarts with Captain culpable prominent in a never-ending defensive debacle of a season. Same old slow back four forced to defend too deep for too long finally yielding late on in halves.
Expect the same old faces to reapppear and hope for better next week with rotation not an option. The forwards may out-gun the opposition in the home games but away from home we are sitting ducks.
Oh for two decent fullbacks with pace. Will Steve Morgan’s Liverpool connection save us?
Will Jez outbid the other stragglers in attempting to buy improvement in January?
Continuing to pick this back four will surely see us relegated.

I suspect the happy clappers will try and defend this rubbish again.
We are now hovering above the relegation zone and will shortly be in it, where we belong.
Yet again McCarthy resorts to parking the bus in front of our goal.
Truely dreadful rubbish from start to finish.
Utterly bizarre to move ward from left back to right back.
Hopeless, clueless, completely out of our depth. This is like watching a slow and painful death of our football club.

We played for a draw and got what we deserved: Defeat. Predictably, our top goalscorer didn’t start. When we went 2-1 down on 83 mins we’d had one shot on goal (the pen) and Fletcher remained on the bench. I don’t know where MM and TC thought the equaliser was coming from.

Dreadful game of football all round at least Everton did try to attack it was only that they were just as dire as us that stopped us having a lamping. Doyle, the only man up front won’t go near the penalty area, Fletcher left on the bench until the 85th minute another reactive decision from Muppet Mick, Milijas is a fairy but to be fair to him it’s not his game to get stuck in and sit deep, O’Hara fat waste of space, Elekobi probably the worst footballer in the league not far behind him is Dave Edwards who as soon as he’s fit seems the saviour. It was an absolute joke as a spectacle we ought to be ashamed of ourselves not 1 shot until Fletcher came on Mick OUTTTTTTT NOW !

MM has done a great job getting Wolves to the Premier League, but getting there is one thing, staying there is another. Any coach can get players fit and make them run all day long around the pitch. What we need is someone tactically astute and someone who can mould a side who can pass, create chances and put fear into the opposition. Time for a change before January. The table does not lie we have Chelsea & Man Utd coming up.

There are very few positives to take from the game, it was very uninspiring to watch. Can’t disagree with any of the sentiments on here, except to sack Mick which is not appropriate. But Fletcher has to play even if it means adjusting for Doyle, We have to play more in a more attacking style than yesterday’s rubbish, and Johnson has to do what he was bought to do-win headers in our box!!!!
With the exception of Hennessey and Craddock , who MM tried to get rid of 5 years ago , every player in the squad yesterday was brought in by the manager . Presumably they were bought to fit a blueprint of the way the management and coaches deemed we would play and , hopefully , be successful . Can anyone enlighten me on exactly what that pattern of play is supposed to be ? We go to play a team that had lost 5 out of 6 games and whose only win at home was against Wigan and our master plan means that we have one shot at goal in the whole game . Norwich , Swansea and QPR have come up and are playing a type of football that , at present , we can only dream about and they are giving the premiership a real go with positive tactics and no little effort ( putting a shift in !! ). Unfortunately I feel that our curent manager has proven , in his 3+ seasons in the premiership , that he lacks the required tactical nous and coaching skills to be successful and yet again we will all be sweating right down to the wire at the end of the season .

According to my view the defeat was what we dwserved. We played against a championship opponent having only Doyle up front. No chances ( only a lucky penalty). We had signs of life when Fletcher came in. It’s managers problem. We play pesimistic football. I am very frustrated.

Disappointing to never really get in the game despite taking the lead! Lets remember Lets remember how everyone said we had to beat the bottom 6 though and that will be Wigan, Blackburn, Swansea, Bolton, Sunderland, Norwich. So far we have 7/9 in these games. Chelsea have a Champions League game away on Wednesday so we might just sneak something there.

I recall the home game against Everton last year – i think we lost 2-0. With pretty much the same players Everton looked a lot stronger than us. Everton in Mick’s eyes are a strong team – in a false position, hence his defensive tactics.
As a season ticket holder, like most fans i just don’t get Mick’s decision-making and despair at watching long balls hoofed up to Doyle. This is just another example of the ‘safety first’ approach adopted by McCarthy.
We play with fear – this is by no accident. Moreover, we do not have the dynamism in the centre of the pitch or control to really dominate games. The yawning gaps on the terraces reflect these observations. The supporters are not ‘mindless idiots’. We know a good team and appreciate good football when we see it.
Unfortunately, Morgan and Moxey publicly overlook these glaring problems. Perhaps they either see the problems but think Mick will turn it round. They can’t see the problems and think Mick will turn it round. Or know the problems but think we will still scrape through to survival.
With the current team, depressing pattern of play and dithering decision-making from management we will all be in for another last day survival scrap. Something Morgan apparently wanted to avoid; of which is his own making.
Hope i am proved wrong by a steady mid-table finish -but just can’t see it

What a pathetic display. We kept the ball well while we were in our own half!!!The ball up to Doyle was particularly useless. Most of the time he was marked by three players,O’Hara had a bad day and hardly did anything constructive.Effort is not a problem, but skill and talent is lacking throughout the squad.Whoever you put in they are no better than his previous selections. The time to improve the TEAM was when we had that good start. We need a number of skillful players in Jan,GOD KNOWS WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO COME FROM!!!

As the report above says, it was a poor game. The only positives I could gleen from the game was the continued good form of both Ward and Hennessey.
I thought Ward was harshly judged to have fouled Saha for their penalty. If penalties are to be awarded for that kind of contact, then there will probably be penalties given in every game, every week up and down the country.
Milijas again was very dissappointing. He did’nt start off too badly but then soon drifted out of the game.

Thought we would get a draw out of this game but wasn’t to be, after this performance against a very average Everton side its hard to see how we can improve, imo we play the worse football in the Prem, there’s no threat up forward, a midfield who can’t take control of a game and a leaky defence, all we can do is hope we get as much luck as last year when we survived by the skin of our teeth because we will certainly need it as things are not looking good we still play the same tactics, same playing style and to top it off still have the same clueless manager.
Well what a pathetic performance, from the kick off we have gone back to passing the ball back (No surprise there,) and the goal keeper booting the ball upfield so we have already lost the ball.
MM has lost the plot Everton are having a poor season but we were worse and it hurts me to say that.
We gained all our points last season when HENRY and then DOYLE were not playing. So why does MM the person taking us down cannot see this.?
Reason he sticks with the players who are loyal!!!It doesn’t matter that they are not good enough to play for WOLVES.
I could go on but please Mr MORGAN use your authority and get rid of MM and his staff.
Tell Moxley that he has to go unless he stops talking rubbish by saying MM’s job was never under threat.(Nepotism).

Not a great performance, but anything away to Everton would have been a good result in all honesty. I think people on here seemed to think that just because Everton were struggling, we had a right to get a simple win. Simple fact is Everton have a quality team, and the 1 and only reason they had struggled so far this season is because of their horrible fixtures so far. They will now go on and climb the table and end up finnishing just behind the top 6. We have a long way to go, but its still so tight that we could easily still finnish mid table.
It would seem that some fans seem to think that we should be beating every team out side the top 6 home and away, yet if we did that, we would be competing for the title.

Tony No 25. Mick is not unhappy playing this way. The reason is for that statement, he does not not know any other way. Headless chickens would have beaten Wolves, what a shambles. I am not a Ward fan, but, his impovement this season is remarkable, it is not exceptional play but he gives every thing he has to the cause. Perhaps the Italian influence. whilst playing for Eire is beginning to take hold. Pity Doyle does not catch on. Is Doyle a good player , or is it the MM influence? MM states that Hnery will be his playmaker. First exercise will have to be in passing a ball without stopping it.
A comparrision of M.M with Major Buckley was made last week in the E&S, I think it was the Tim Nash section!. The two managers who won promotion for Wolves to Div 1/Premier League. Is the author comparing M.M to the Major, a man, who along with Herbert Chapman and Charlie Buchan, revolutionised English football.?

Well back down to 17th. Are you happy with that Morgan? I ask because we never hear from you, only your mouthpiece, Moxey.
Pressure off for next week as we are not expected to do anything against Chelsea. But sack Mick now and we could get a manager in who will not play players out of position, who knows how to motivate and who doesn’t disrespect the fans.
Is that too much to ask? What are this board playing at, can’t they see MM is out of his depth? In a results based industry, MM is not getting the results needed and must go. Perhaps Morgan is having difficult in sacking McCarthy, having not sacked a manager before?
I would have thought as a successful businessman in a cut throat induustry he woyld be well used to hiting and firing. Well let Moxey do it, it is what you pay him a six figure sum for.
One shot in target yesterday, that was the penalty, totally defensive and awful to watch.
For all our sakes get him out now as on a day of national protest at the Sunderland game (televised) because I don’t think you will be able to handle the fans backlash if he is still there.

As many others have previously commented, since we avoided relegation last season by 1 point and 3 mins we have added one player (Johnson) to the 11. This was either complacency or incompetence on a gross scale. Even more unbelievable is that Moxey then comes out and says “oh, we’re not doing as well as we thought we would… and so we will spend some money in January”. This from a Leadership that claims never to talk about their intentions in the transfer market. I honestly don’t think that getting rid of MM is the answer….the problem is that we have not invested in the quality or quantity of players required to bring our squad to the level needed, and for that I blame all three M’s.

Poor squad and now Jez Moxey shows signs of panic and suggests that money is available in the January window. It’s too late unless you can get at least 4 class players which of course you can’t. Wolves led by sheep and perhaps Steve Morgan should reflect on on the poor decisions taken.

I can only guess you are not watching this drivel week in and week out, i feel very sorry for the players, i know this squad is capable of so much more but require a decent manager with footballing tactics and selection to produce it.
I am a supporter of wolves and this is why i want a manager change now, because i support the club and have done so for 40 years.
Unless we have a new manager soon i fear we will be relegated come the end of the season the football on the pitch is desperatly lacking in direction.

If only our individual team members and management performed on the field as well as they talk a good game in the press we should be world chasmpions by now let alone Premiership champions! Except for Wayne, Berra and Ward we were pathetic today. Wrong tactics or not good enough? We can’t pass accurately, cannot defend properly and cannot attack! Shame. Why do we have to rely on other teams being worse than us to avoid being relegated? Surely we HAVE to spend money and but quality to survive! Being satisfied with what we have, as Mick often states, will lead us into big trouble.
Also a question for the statisticians. How many times when we put Hennessy under pressure by back passing to him and he boots it upfield, how many times does his kick reach our own players? And a second statistic question. When (debatable) it does reach our own player how many times do we progress from there and not lose it? SO WHY BACK PASS IT TO THE GOALKEEPER!

Of course it is dissapointing to lose any game, and no point saying it was a good performance. 2 soft penalties each, and they didn’t get a cast iron one either. So no excuses.
But this is the Premier League, and it’s exactly as hard as I imagined it would be when year after year we missed out in the playoffs, or worse missed out on the play offs.
It’s probably going to be another 3-5 years of struggle before we become a mid table team. That’s the reality.

i watched the game yesterday and out movement going forward was schoolboy at best, i’m thinking MM needs to start showing the players some dvd’s of swansea because the was they pass and move is brilliant and if that could be drilled into the players alongside their fighting spirit we’d be a top half side.

Wigan have been up for 7 seasons and always face relegation. It’s not a god given right to be mid table just because we’re wolves who used to be the best about 55years ago. It is my considered opinion that it is the manager’s ambition to get the Wolves back in the Championship where his competencies will not be so severely challenged. How else are his comments, attitudes, selections and apparent lack of player expertise to be explained.Circumstances in the last 2 seasons conspired to prevent this so he is trying extra hard this season and at this rate he will surely succeed. Why else not start Fletcher,Jarvis,Zubar,Foley and continue with Stearman shirt-puller Berra and the back-pass,hoof-it-down the-field method of attack?.

#26 Kenny Hibbit you state “well, when you wake up in may 2012, wwfc will be safe in mid table in the premiership”. I hope that you are correct, but on the performances I have seen this season (and over the past 2 seasons in the EPL)I would not put my house on it.Would you put your house on it? This kind of prophecy/delusion is all too familiar and similar to JM who has come out with the worldly offering that MM’s position at Wolves was never in doubt during the 1 out out of 21 points poor run and he is safe. In other words MM can carry on as he is and even if Wolves are relegated he can carry on. It seems that there is no such thing as accountability at Wolves. JM even says that he and MM are working from the same page. This is worrying. Surely the chairman has to make a statement and act proactively before its too late. Quick comment on Saturday’s game – Tactics wrong or players are not good enough to pass the ball and keep possession. At the moment the whole movement of the ball is sideways and backwards and when there is a chance to put the ball into the scoring zone it is not crossed (maybe because no one is there). Rather the players move the ball backwards and sometimes even from the attacking penalty area back to Henners. Again substitutions made far too late. Where is Hammill? Given the lack of goals why has Volks been allowed to go out on loan? Its about time these youngsters were played regularly otherwise they will never develop.

The Everton goalkeeper could have brought a deckchair and a laptop and enjoyed the afternoon.
Because apart from the penalty he didn’t have to make 1 save. Fact! If I had paid money to watch this I would have demanded a refund.
I do not blame the manager he had obviously played for a draw and he can only plan with the players he has. None of them would even get a game in a top 6 club not even Doyle.
Wolves seriously need 2 or 3 attack minded players especially a midfield play maker.

“I thought as the away side we played really well but I am really disappointed and annoyed we didn’t get anything out of the game,” said Wolves manager McCarthy (as quoted in the Daily Mail).
If MM thought we played really well, I ask the question. Do we want a manager that was satisfied with that rubbish performance???
He’s lost the plot.

I knew exactly what team Mick would start with what tactics he would play what his subs would be and when. The man is so predictable. If I can predict that then so can every manager we come up against.
Just because those 11 beat the worst team in the league doesn’t mean they are going to walk all over a well established mid table team. Why does he never allow player to go straight into the first team? If he was hit and miss for the Wigan game I’m sure 2 weeks break would have meant he was fit again. If he wasn’t then he shouldn’t even be on the bench.
Why did he think a team who concedes 2 goals a game could sit back and defend for 90 mins?
Why wait until the 81st minute yet again to bring on a tactical change. Its way too late and that’s why you get the sarcastic cheers. Everyone in the stadium apart from yourself and the other Muppet next to you can see it. Perhaps you should spend less time looking at the clipboard and more time watching the match.
I’m getting really fed up and bored watching the same line up lose week after week. Morgan take note. If it carries on I’m giving up my season ticket. It costs too much money to watch that rubbish.

Don’t forget though when we were ahead we were 9th in the table! then we droped to 12th with the equalizer and then down to 17th with the loss…. Just saying it’s still close and a win will through you up the table. Lets just say we won at Everton and we were 9th now, would you all be this pesermistic? I know we DID loose and we are now 17th but it’s not like we are getting battered 5 – 0 every week!
I agree with you all though that we need new players in Jan’ I’m sure they will come now they realise it’s not going to be as easy as Moxey thought, im no fan of his.
How can you Wolves ‘Fans’ say Norwich and Swansea are better than us? just because atm they are higher in the league does not mean they are better than us, it happens every year, promoted teams stay high for a while then after christmas drop down.
Teams to be relegated: Norwich – Swansea – Wigan.
I still beleive in the team and Mick we just need the board to give him some money this time…

I am sick to death of the people running this club, their arrogance, their total disregard for the fans ,their “we are right if you criticise us, you are numpties”attitude and their failure to invest in the most important part of the club:THE TEAM!!!I have been a season ticket holder for many years ,but even I am losing interest in what is happening at Molineux.Morgan ,as the clubs owner is an absolute disgrace in my opinion.Ignoring the Wigan game(they are worse than us) our recent record is appalling and yet we do not pick our best players and keep using the same old tactics.Sorry to say several of those players on Saturday are nowhere near premiership quality and M, M and M know it.

Oh dear, at least last season we had a bloody good go at it and were unlucky in a lot of games. This season we are just CRAP and dont seem to have a clue! Whats changed so much in a few months? have the players given up? or do they not understand the managers tactics?……does anybody understand the managers tactics????? I think we need to get an estabished PL manager in who can keep us in this league this season and establish us next season. Forget Martin O’Neil he wasted a lot of mone’t very popular with the players (ask a Villa fan) but i think Mark Hughes would be good candidate, his teams have seemed a lot more solid and consistant than we do, i dont know what sort of money he spent but surely we need to establish ourseves now before its too late

Like Silver Wolf (post 59), I watched the game on the internet. Can’t argue with much of what he says because Wolves really were poor. It’s frustrating because Everton weren’t any great shakes themselves either, yet we gifted them all 3 pts. We were toothless and negative in equal measure, so I guess we got what we deserved -naff all.
Jez talks about funds being available in January, but we all know that acquiring flops is the risk you take when clubs go panic-buying at that time of the year. Everyone should be worried -jeez, only a real twerp wouldn’t be!- but give the lads your full support every game. After all, it’s the club’s bigwigs who have overestimated the team’s strength and depth. UTW.

For supporters defeat is hard to take, whether you are in the Numpty or Happy Clapper camp, it hurts and ruins our wekend.
It is interesting that when we lose the E&S recieves far more posts than when we win?
OK so we don’t win that often but surely that would mean more post’s not less?
What’s disappointing is that we averaging two goals against this season, when we have gone out and purchased an experienced defender.
Just as disappointing is the goals return of Kevin Doyle – a player that should now be well established at this level seems to be going backwards. Has he lost confidence in his team mates or is more focused on international football?
Whatever the reason he needs to be dropped (just like Jarvis) and Fletcher should be given the chance to run the line on his own.
If McCarthy does not think that SEB is good enough to compete for a place why did he not sell him and use the money for another striker?
Stability is great and the success in recent seasons has been built on that stability.
I have consistantly said that the management team needs strengthening with proven Premiership coaches, nothing this season so far has changed that view.

Wow! I have read most of the posts on here and I find it overwhelming the anti-MM,TC,JM,SM, feeling. This is not just a storm in a tea cup, it has been coming on for some time now. Speaking to fellow fans on Saturday, I think Moxey will be lucky to break even on gate receipts over the next few home games!
Surely, MM’s position is now untenable! Week after week it is the same old drivvle emanating from him. For Gods sake, can Morgan open his orifice and change the bloody record!
It is very very sad seeing the club go to the bin through underperforming displays! How can anyone say, ‘In Mick we Trust!!?’ The man has had enough chances and to say that this squad is strong enough is either daft or pigheaded!
There are quality players out there but the stumbling block is Moxey and also Morgan himself; They do not want to PAY! Well, stew in your own created mire! Just like Nero as Rome burnt! Total bloody minded ignorance and no engagement with the fans at all. On your own heads be it. Enjoy your half empty ground!

Just what has McCarthy been doing on the training ground the last fortnight,after that ‘defensive’ performance? B…r all by the looks of it, but oh he’s had the time to be on every tv and radio station, as well as the press, putting the world to rights, (Sepp must be quaking in his boots),either that or playing foursomes on the ‘golf’ course;
Oh lordy Wardy, what’s happened? Have you signed a juicy fat new contract or something? As your form has gone the way of O’Hara, Johnson,Doyle etc etc etc;
Mind you, since Dumb and Dumber have backed thick Mick to the hilt and can’t perform a humiliating u-turn now, he knows no matter what, he has a job for life and as long as he throws a bone in the form of a win every nine games, the Lemming like fans amongst us will cheer him all the way to the Championship!

Nothing seems to change – no ambition against an average Everton team. Will MM ever learn? Watched Liverpool take it to Chelsea yesterday and get the result they deserved. You won’t see Daglish playing for a draw even against the top teams.
1 shot on target which I suppose was the penalty says it all for me.
Can’t see anything else than a defeat against Chelsea UNLESS we show the same ambtion as Liverpool even if we don’t have the same calibre of player.
I don’t want to harp on about this but MM is not the man to take this club up the premiere league table.

I thought Henners, Henry, Edwards, Berra and Ward (player of the season for us) played well. Milijas has played his last game for me, he had the chance to force his way in the team and he was awful. Stearman injured is the best result for us here, he was again outpaced. But average overall, 1 shot and no ideas. Johnson has made out defense worse, but I must admit, Berra is improving.
I still trust Mic, But I would like to see the following team away…
Henners, Doherty, Craddock, Berra, Ward
Jarvo, O’Hara, Henry, Edwards, Hunt
Doyle or Fletch
Change Edwards for Fletch / Doyle at home.
Chelsea away…no O’Hara no Johnson (or is it Berra) suspended. But it will make no difference. We need to prepare for Sunderland and Stoke at home for 6 points.

Ye Olde South Bank wrote: “After all, it’s the club’s bigwigs who have overestimated the team’s strength and depth.” If that means Morgan and Moxey have overestimated Mick McCarthy’s strength and bottle, then it looks very true.
The players are way better than being in 17th position, but the manager doesn’t know how to use them, and doesn’t even have the ambition to try and play creative football. If Swansea, Norwich or Sandwell go down, at least they will sink with their flags flying.
Wolves often play boring defensive rubbish, which can do nothing but depress every footie lover who watches it. Those who say we play like a Championship team are happy clappers––the kind of football we played against Everton would look mid-table in D1 (and the same goes for 80 minutes of the football against Swansea and the whole game against QPR).
Wolves are sinking without a flutter from any of their flags. It’s a horrific sight. The football of a losing miserable git.

Just want to comment here as the the thread about Mick being delighted with Saturdays performance was shut down before I had a chance to say something. Is the man a complete idiot? I don’t think so but he’s acting and talking like a buffoon. How can you seriously be happy with that kind of a display when you go home empty handed? Kenny Dalglish talked about being satisfied that his fans went home feeling happy after they’d won at Chelsea. MM has made it clear he’s not interested in what his clubs fans think. He really does have to go. Curbishley would be my choice

John Wolf,
your passion for the Club is admirable and I get the impression you would happily charge into the firing line, like the six hundred, if you were ordered to.
Well done old boy. But football, like warfare has moved on considerably.
Did MM really get those players together during the week and tell them a performance like they delivered would delight him? That in itself would be enough to depress anybody in advance.
It is not the unhappy fans who are dragging this club down, it is surely the manager and his coaching staff, No?

155 – If you’d read my previous posts (stretching way back to last season) you’d already know that I see McCarthy as a spent force and well out of his depth, Streako. So, there’s been no sudden ‘revelation’ for me because I’ve got perfectly good eyes of my own. Unfortunately, some of my fellow fans are forever blinded, it seems, by eternal gratitude to Mick for our promotion season. Well, that’s long gone. Besides, some fans need reminding that Mick has never undertaken any of his duties in the capacity of a Charity Worker. No, he’s been handsomely rewarded -and still is- so let’s all remember that before getting too dewy-eyed.
Sure, I thank Mick for his services and acknowledge his great contribution to this club. More importantly though, we fans deserve a competent manager with savvy and tactical nous. Like any Wolves boss, Mick is entitled to receive praise when it’s deserved, but, by the same token, he’s got to expect stick when things go badly wrong. As things stand, Mick’s floundering like a fish out of water.
As for Moxey…well, he’s just doing as he’s told by the Big Chief, just the same as he did under Sir Jack. As long as he receives his fat, annual bonus for exercising “fiscal prudence”, I doubt he gives a monkey’s what instructions he’s given. And why should he when he aint a Wolves fan? Jez is just a hired puppet and occasional, selective mouthpiece for Morgan, nothing more.

When McCarthy got this job he must have thought he had won the lottery. There is no doubt, being manager of Wolves, McCarthy has landed on his feet.

A management which thinks he is the best thing since sliced bread.
I bet there are thousands in Wolverhampton wish they could find a job which pays you for being totally inept.
I am interested to know exactly what it will take for him to have the sack.
Then we have his star purchase, Doyle. He has scored twice so far this year in 12 league games. When Reading trousered £6.5 million for him, they couldn’t believe their luck. I bet they were sniggering into their armpits.
Is there anyone out there who still thinks he was worth the money?
Now we have his other phenomenal acquisition, Johnson. With them and O’Hara who has sparked and fizzled out like a firework, we are well blessed. there’s only one way we are going on current form.
Ah Well, get your wallets stacked with notes, these £40 sessions soon come around.

My own personal opinion is that I was happier slugging it out at the top of the championship as I am now watching this dross week in week out.
Sir Billy has suggested McCarthy will always be a Wolves legend. I completely disagree.
He may have been successful for Wolves BUT our track record in picking managers is dreadful. I can’t think of any in the last 30 years that have left Wolves and gone on to major success elsewhere.
So comparing him to previous managers is fine, but let’s all face it, the previous managers track records are appalling.
Hoddle, Taylor, McGee, Jones et al… none have gone on to do anything since they left Wolves.
The only legend in recent years to me, is Graham Turner who truely saves the club from the abyss.
My Own opinion of McCarthy is he got very very lucky to get us promoted. In our promotion year our form completely and utterly collapsed from Christmas onwards. We were promoted because Reading’s and Birminghams’ form also collapsed.
McCarthy in relative terms has had huge financial AND board backing. The vast majority of his signings have been very poor. Championship players in the main.
People talk about what good value Henry , Ward, Kightly and the like have been. Well the league doesn’t lie and on that basis these players are punching above their weight and are clearly not good enough to ply their trade at this level.
McCarthty also has little to no affinity with the Wolves fans. Its outrageous how distrespectful he has been and I’ll never forgive him for it.
So, in my opinion the best thing that can happen to Wolves is that McCarthy goes, the club stops wasting ridiculous amounts of money on building a new stadium and some houses at compton and focuses on clearing out the old players that aren’t good enough and backing a new manager to bring in the players that will give us a chance of staying in this league.
No one could argue that McCarthy hasn’t had a fair crack of the whip. But, it really is time for a change now.

I do not understand why Mick plays 4-5-1 against the teams around us. I can understand playing that formation against the top teams where any points will be a bonus, but against a struggling Everton? I don’t agree Everton were there for the taking but I certainly believe it’s a fixture where we can be picking up points away from home. The fans won’t act so angrily to defeat if the team have a go. But the way MM sets us up away from home is to defensive and unfortunately this is reflected in our away results. I just personally wish in this types of games he plays with a attacking mentality, I’d rather see us lose giving the opposition something to think about.

179 – Three pots of coffee, bud? Is that all?I’m already on my third crate, lol!
Hughes might well be worth a punt, KHLF, but I’m not convinced he’d fancy the job. The guy I originally fancied giving a crack at the job has now taken another, so it’s too late. Besides, he’s way too busy enjoying himself in the Europa League and presiding over just one loss in something like a dozen games at the moment. Yeah, lucky Blues because Chris Hughton will surely prove to be a great appointment for them. It’s all pointless talk, though, because we all know Mick’s staying forever -even down to the West Midlands league, as one fan said.
Incidentally, after briefly reading through the posts, I can only assume that Streako’s mistaken you for the very similarly-named Kenny Hibbitt Scorcher (see post 26). If not, I’d be genuinely surprised because you’ve never struck me as a ‘happy clapper’, even if he certainly appears to be.

i think Mick went for a draw and we didnt get it. But it looked like a close game.
It was a very dubious penalty decision in the end that went against us.
The problem for me is we are still conceding 2 goals every game apart from the Wigan game (they should really have scored 1-2 with the chances they had.)
The good news is that we are scoring goals home and away.
From what I saw on TV Berra/Johnson had decent games but I still think craddock/Johnson would be a better partnership and may help us get a few clean sheets.
