Wolves’ Stephen Ward claims Ireland at Euro 2012 could cause truancy

Wolves left-back Stephen Ward believes the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2012 could cause mass truancy – just like he did when they qualified for a major tournament.

Ward scored the goal that sealed a 5-1 aggregate win in the play-off second leg against Estonia on Tuesday to seal Ireland’s place in the tournament at Poland and Ukraine – their first major finals in a decade.

For 26-year-old, who grew up on the outskirts of Dublin, it brought back memories of when he was still at school during the 2002 World Cup, and even Italia ’90.

He said: “I remember the World Cup in 2002. I was still in school but I just didn’t go in when we were playing! I took the days off when I wanted to!

“It’s a brilliant time when Ireland are competing in major tournaments – unbelievable. I still have fond memories of Italia 90 even though I was only four or five-years-old. It’s a fantastic time for the country.”
