Stephen Ward happy at left-back
Saturday 29th October 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Wolves left-back Stephen Ward today vowed to save manager Mick McCarthy a fortune in the transfer market.
The Ireland international has made the left-back spot his own this season as arguably Wolves’ most consistent player and was rewarded with the captaincy for the first time in Wednesday’s Carling Cup defeat to Manchester City.
The 26-year-old has moved ahead of long-term rival George Elokobi after a summer where several players in the position were rejected, including Lee Wallace, who eventually joined Rangers from Hearts, Paul Konchesky who went to Leicester from Liverpool, and Chelsea youngster Ryan Bertrand on loan.
But Ward insists he can remain first-choice, saying: “From myself and George’s point of view, we always felt we had the ability to do a job there all season, whether it was me or him playing.
“I’m enjoying it, and, having worked hard at the defensive side of my game, I’ve become more comfortable in that position now and I feel more confident.”
