Wolves boss Mick McCarthy backs Roger Johnson to come good

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy today backed Roger Johnson to win his struggle for form in his captain’s toughest test.

The nation expects Wolves’ trip to Manchester City tomorrow to be the Premier League leaders’ latest goalfest, following their 6-1 destruction of champions Manchester United at Old Trafford and their 5-2 Carling Cup blitz of McCarthy’s side on Wednesday.

By his own admission, Johnson has been below par and he faces being on the receiving end again tomorrow.

But former City defender McCarthy is sure the £4.5million summer signing will come good.

The Wolves boss said: “You don’t lose your ability, but you can lose form and that can be down to all sorts of things, whether it’s the team not particularly doing it or you as an individual.

“I’ve been there myself and you’ve got to be given trust and support to get through it.”

I don’t get this need to defend him, he is being let down by the fact we have no defensive midfielder or right back or centre half to go with him.

So all in all he has done well.

He had better come good for that amount of money. I will actually admit that I thought he was a good signing at the time, but he has looked very shaky.

In reality, how much of Johnson’s struggles have been down to the poor defence around him?
Berra – shirt puller and too slow
Ward – out of position and ripped to pieces by anyone with moderate level of pace
Stearman – out of positin and very poor

We needed a number of changes to the defence and only signed one player – who is to blame Mick, Moxey, Morgan or all three?

We have to change back to 4-5-1 for the foreseeable future – too poor a midfield and defence to ever play 4-4-2 at this level. Hopefully this should see Milijas and Guedioura given some time on the pitch.

I am sure he can but the big problem is that, Stephen Ward apart, all the defence are performing badly. There is an argument that all the other three defenders should be dropped but unfortunately once again there are significant injuries that deprive us of both Foley and Zubar. Personally, if fit, I would play them both. As it stands the only real option after watching Wednesday is to bring back Craddock. Tomorrow I would suggest that both Guedioura and Milijas play? Line up as follows:-

    Hennessey
    Stearman Craddock Johnson Ward
    Guedioura Henry Milijas Hammill
    O’Hara
    Doyle

Before the usual lot start spitting their bile about the place, take a minute to google the article that the express and star published on 2nd August titled ‘Wolves make Roger Johnson captain’. (I’d print the link but I don’t think they’d publish it then). Scroll down to the comments section and look for your names, I bet you’ll find many of the present hate mob expressing their delight at what a great move it was to make Johnson captain and how he has all the attributes to become one of the great wolves captains of modern times! In the 87 days that have passed, has Johnson really done enough to become a public hate figure and warrant some morons to call for him not just to be dropped but sold at the earliest opportunity? The answer to any right minded individual is no. He’s had a poor 5 or 6 games and said a few things that a few people did’t want to hear. He is still our captain and almost certainly our best centre half so for God’s sake lets give the man some support when he needs it to lead us out of the mess that many of you morons have been partly responsible for creating.

Not just out of form, seriously out of form! Has a 50p head…. Where the ball goes, nobody knows! Slow! Caught out of position and talks to much off the pitch! Other than that, I hope he comes good!

My question to MM is…. How does a member of the squad get into the team? The only way I see possible is injuries! If players are out of form, give them a break and take them out the firing line!

    Cmon Wolves!!!!!

Certainly needs to up his game that’s for sure. I find it rather puzzling that for the first couple games he looked the real deal, but then has looked at best pretty ordinary if not downright bad.

Hopefully this is a temporary phase and he’ll come good. Just hope he does’nt take too long about it.

Also agree we don’t have the quality of player or tactical awareness to play 4-4-2 against teams playing 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1.

Solution therefore obvious: get the players in the Jan window and get a tactically aware coach on the staff. Are you watching Steve Morgan?!!

Most Wolves fans would have thought that when we signed johnson that our defence would improve from last season it did for the first few games his form has gone to pot in last 5 games and needs to step up to plate and show leadership on the field as he has the captain armband not shrugg his arms when we concede a goal look around to see who is to blame.

I will admit, that i was very happy when we signed Roger, i thought then and still do, that he’s a very good CH, but we all know football and football players thrive on confidence, if you and your team mates lose it, its very hard to play without making mistakes, as players around are usually making them aswell, and being defenders they show up even more, cause they usually end up resulting in goals against you. But im sure when he was signing for us,he was told like us, we would be getting two CH’s and another FB? ,yet we’ve ended up with the same defence thats struggled for the last two-three seasons. I dont expect anything from tomorrow’s game, and its alot to expect ‘one’ player to ake such a big difference? But i would just like to wish the team my best, you never know in football, it as an habit of throwing up suprises, so give it you best ,thats all fans ask of you. GOOD LUCK LADS: UTW:

Watched the Newcastle goals back again. Johnson was marking Ba and didn’t run with him when he made his run to the near post. How he moved out of the way when Gutierrez ran at him was incredible – he nearly had to pay to get back in! Can’t blame other defenders for either of those goals – couldn’t blame them either for heading the ball in at Liverpool, when it was easier to keep out of the way – couldn’t blame anyone for that ludicrous attemt at a bicycle kick for Swansea’s first goal either. Sorry Bob Wolf, but he needs to stand up & be counted. And please stop with the Ward-knocking – he’s been outstanding this season.

    2) For once I thought that you were talking a lot of sense and then you have a go at Ward? He has been our best player this season and hardly any goals have come from the left. A big reason for this must be credited to playing for Ireland. Their defensive record is far better than England’s and at a guess I would say that in the games Ward has played at left back for them, he has been part of a defence that has kept 4/5 clean sheets. Furthermore, he was excellent going forward on Wednesday!

We need to play 4-1-4-1 against City and stop Silva. Silva destroyed Utd. We have to stop him coming through midfield.

What options do we really have. I can’t see the Craddock and Johnson working and Micks not going to go back to Craddock and Berra.

Doherty is too inexperienced to play at this level and Elokobi is not going to take Wards position in his current form.

Our only options are to either stick which what we have, bring in another defender who’s out of contract (unlikely) or bring back Mouokolo off his loan (no thanks).

Were stuck until Jan or when Zubar or Foley are fits so lets just get on with it.

Johnson, Ward, and Doherty have got to be tight on attackers at all time. Craddock should be spare. Henry and Milijas sit- Henry tracks Silva- Milijas- Yaya when he comes through. Guedioura, Hammill, and O’hara- pick up nearest man and interchange as needed. Doyles is outlet and stays central as much as possible. City will kill you with runners from midfield as they did on Tuesday- midfield and defence have to track runners at all times. Also have to defend deep compress space- think Inter Milan against Barcelona- don’t let them get behind you- keep goal side of runners. Simple :-)

We knew Johnson wasnt the fastest when we signed him, but what he brings is an aerial presence as well as some much needed communication with the back four. I think the missing piece of the jigsaw if Zubar. Hes quick, and has played most his career in the centre of defence. Berra isnt fast enough, which is backed up by Fletchers coments on Soccer AM when he claimed Berra was the slowest player at the club. Not a good combination having two slow defenders in the prem.

Funny how people are complaining about him slagging off the fans but what he said was 100% true. Mollineaux has become very hostile, and if you dont like him saying that, maybe you should consider actually supporting the players for 90 minutes rather than complaining and spouting abuse. No wonder we cant attract a better quality of player, even if they were prepared to accept minimal wages, the thought of playing for such fickle abusive fans would definately change their mind. Its a shame too, because those morons are the minority, but are always the ones gaining the headlines for the wrong reasons.

When McCarthy made the double substitution v Swansea, it was Karl Henry who took the captain’s role in approaching the manager to enquire how the revised system was to work. It was also Karl who had taken the initiative in trying to lead from the front; in fact, up until we scored, he was the only Wolves player I can recall having a shot on gosl.
It was a bold move to give Johnson the captaincy, based mainly on McCarthy’s expressed admiration of Johnson’s thirst for “a fight”. Thus far, both individuals have directed most of their beligerance at the supporters, whilst Henry has quietly attempted to keep a crumbling team (dressing room??) together.
Perhaps McCarthy should now attempt to show how ‘big’ a pair of characters he and Johnson are, by admitting his earlier error and restoring the captaincy to Henry.

Anyone who wants to write of Johnson needs their head examining. He is undoubtedly our best CH and a few games of poor form will not alter that. For my money Berra is good when he has a big target man to mark, but poor against pace. He is actually fairly quick in a straight line, but too slow to turn. As for suggesting Elokobi to play Sat at LB or CH I love the guy, but he just is too much of a liability.

Agree a lot with 39 – and I feel RJ will come good. He’s been asked to do a lot at the heart of a shaky defence at same time as taking on the captaincy. I think what was seen as him ‘slagging off the fans’ was maybe an attempt to step up as captain to try and shield the team from some fans’ hostility. And MM has tried to sign other quality players but some (many?) have walked away – eg Scott Dann first time round, McFadden, others could be listed. I think 39 is right in saying ‘No wonder we cant attract a better quality of player, if they get such abuse from fans’.

Personally I don’t think he has played well in any game this season, excusing perhaps the Blackburn game, but in our clean sheet against Fulham, especially in the first half he kept giving the ball away & the rest of the season, unfortunately, his fraialties have been there for all to see.

I think one of the problems is the way Wolves, as a club acted when he signed, making out he was some sort of defensive saviour & putting him on a pedastel, hailing him as some defensive superstar & that it was bordering on a miricle that we signed him????

The guy’s previous clubs are Wycombe, Cardiff & Birmingham, so we are the bigest club he has played for, yet we welcomed him with open arms & imediately made him club captain, for me that is an honour that should be earned, not gifted, this was a huge mistake by the managment of the club, I can only presume that this was done because he dared to have ago at McCarthy during a game, whoopee!!!

Johnson’s attitude & body language smacks of someone who thinks he’s ‘arrived’ & when you look at his previous clubs that should not be the case, he should be honoured to wear the shirt, never mind the arm band!!

For the record I was pleased when we signed him, as I think he has been a decent defender at this level, but nothing more & I too think he will come good, but he needs to lose the chip on his shoulder & buckle down.

Personally I’d drop him for a game or 2, just to see how he reacts & just how badly he wants to represent & captain the club, perhaps he should take a closer look at the Wolves career of a certain Jody Craddock for guidance.
