Jez Moxey: We still trust Wolves boss Mick McCarthy

Jez Moxey: We still trust Wolves boss Mick McCarthy

Jez Moxey has broken the boardroom silence on Molineux’s anti-Mick McCarthy lobby to issue a “business as usual” edict.

Wolves’ chief executive used his column in the club’s matchday programme for the Carling Cup tie against Manchester City to align himself squarely alongside a manager who has felt the wrath of fans angered by the team’s seven-game slump without a Premier League win.

Last night’s 5-2 home defeat by City hardly gave McCarthy, whose own programme notes continued his uncompromising rejection of the critics he labelled ‘mindless idiots’ before the game, fresh ammunition to fire back.

But the scoreline against the hottest team in the Premier League disguised an improved performance from Wolves which earned the appreciation of a Molineux crowd who were in no mood to repeat Saturday’s bitter outbreak of venom against the manager.

Moxey and owner Steve Morgan have resisted joining the debate to avoid any notion of the dreaded “vote of confidence” being offered McCarthy. But Moxey made it clear that the club’s trust in the manager was unshaken despite the team’s return of two points from the last 21 available.

This article will no doubt attract all the posters from the last few days reiterating their anti-McCarthy comments. While they are entitled to their opinions I think it only reinforces the division between supporters regarding our manager.

Assuming the statement made by Moxey has been made in all sincerity, it is likely that come what may, Mick McCarthy will probably remain manager for the time being, maybe until the end of the season. Supporters should acccept the fact and get on with supporting the team, the club and the manager.

Why people think that sacking the manager is the only solution to present predicament is beyond me. It’s knee jerk reaction. In the early 60′s Wolves sacked the finest manager the club has ever had in Stan Cullis. It achieved nothing, and we have only had a modicum of success in the intevening years.

I’m not suggesting that Mick McCarthy is on a par with Cullis, but he should be allowed the opportunity to turn the season around. The time for reviewing his management should end of May 2012.

People are throwing names such as O’Neil, Curbishly, “Big Sam”, etc as though they would miraculously turn us into world beaters. O’Neil has a tendancy to walk out on clubs when he feels like it. Curbishly likes the comfort of being a TC pundit. Allydice was sacked by the chicken farmers – hardly a recommendation.

McCarthy, like any manager who would be in charge of Wolves, has to work within the finacial constraints imposed by the club. In that respect, in my opinion, he’s not doing a bad job, and I doubt whether anyone else would do any better in the circumstances at this moment in time, and may do a darn sight worse.

Is it all MM’s fault when you look at what is classed as a budget, then price up the Man city scorers from last night Johnson £7 million, Nasri £22 Million, and Dzeko £27m just them 3 players are literally worth more than all the Wolves sqaud and the Moulinex put together … Its time to look at the board and see what their REAL ambitions are.

Surely even the most die-hard Mick supporters have to admit that Stearman, Berra, Elokobi, Henry and Ebanks are not Premiership players.

Now Johnson is looking like he has to be added to the list of failures that Mick has bought – remember Hoff, Mayokoulo, Mujambi-Bia, Serman, Halford etc.

Going back in time, for me we should have added one of Mills/Dann/Upson/ANother to go with Johnson, a LB for competition/backup, and a striker as further backup. This
is not hindsight, I posted this from day one. We lost out on Mills – had we got him, would we have still gone for Johnson? My problem is we do not know what MM asked for and what he was given. He isn’t going to tell us and Jez certainly won’t. I may have wavered in recent days but, given the way things seem to be, I’m going to stick with Mick at least for now. Unlike some, I was happy with his appointment in the first place and, recognising what he has done for us, see no reason to kick him into touch at this stage.Despite his manner (disliked by some) I don’t see why he has to take all the stick for recent failings. Being old enough to have revelled in the glory days of the 50s when our name was revered in Europe, I accept that those days are long gone – we have to accept what we are, no longer the big club we were. But we must make the best of the situation, and that means staying in this league – and I look to MM to do that. But I also look to SM and JM to enable him to do so – and that will now have to be in January.

I think unless the board have decided to stick with him for the rest of the season then get rid of him now while we still have time to get someone else in. Although I do worry who would want to come Sven ? Hughes ? So, Jez is behind Mick? That, in turn, means Steve is behind both Moxey and Mick, so tell me something new. Mick’s going to be here forever, and we know it. I mean, if Steve can tolerate all that dross we’ve seen -yet still not dismiss him- well, he’s very easily pleased, or doing it on the cheap.

Expect lots more ‘Pro-Mick’ and ‘Anti-Mick’ battles on the internet boards as fans defend their (very) divided stance on all things McCarthy. Expect it for years to come, in fact -especially in the Championship.

Personally, I want him to do the honourable thing and resign while he still has my great respect. He’s going nowhere, though, so I’m stuck with him.

That said, there’s been no booing from me at Mick or the team, and there never will be. I’ve always supported the manager and team to the hilt during games, no matter what I think -Hoddle excepted!

So, if, like me, you really do not want him as manager of our beloved club, feel free to say your piece on these pages and make your feelings known. At Molineux, however, behave as supporters should and back Mick and the boys for 90 mins. If you simply HAVE to make a point, then wait till the game’s over before blasting anyone. You’ll keep the moral high ground that way and deny Mick (or the team) an opportunity to criticise you at the same time.

Pull together, everyone, no matter how you feel. There’s only one Wolverhampton. Never forget it.

A question for all the NONE Happy Clappers. If MM did go,what makes you think that all these managers names that you bandy around, would even consider coming here. After Sky`s wonderful coverage of the Wolves v Swansea game last week end, beamed around the world, showing all your hate filled faces & screaming abuse at our manager.Yes, he is our manager, until he or the club decide otherwise. So bottom line is,you have basically alienated any potential quality volunteers for the job. What new manager would want to submit himself to that treatment,
if things did not go right for him.He would only have the same squad to work with after all.
Another thing, all this clap trap about fans paying the players & managers wages, gives them the right to hurl abuse at them,if they are not performing how they would like them to.Get a grip.As working people, through our taxes & NI contributions,we pay the wages of doctors, nurses, firemen, teachers & social workers, that gives us the right to hurl abuse & obscenities at them as well does it?
Support the team through thick & thin as I have done since 1959,if you have nothing pleasant to say, best say nothing at all.

Realistically, we cannot expect to get anything out of Man City,Everton ( not wealthy but have an excellent Manager) or Chelsea. The gulf in class between the rich clubs and the rest is widening and it is doubtful if we can ever match these teams financial resources both in terms of transfer fees and wages. Equally, the top players increasingly only have one thing on their mind – Champions League football and we can forget ever getting to that exalted level given our ownership’s resources and mindset.

Wigan are probably worse than we are in the goalscoring department but do play an organized game and will be difficult to take anything from.

The management has nailed its support to the mast with respect to MM so there will will be no changes whatever any of us think. We are faces with the prospect of dicing around in the relegation places this season so everyone might as well get used to it.

But im afraid i lost what little respect i had for McCarthy when he clearly told supporters to FXXX OFF,therefore i cannot give him my support, has i said the other day he crossed the line making those remarks that day for me and many other supporters, he’s always had a awful attitude towards people, when things dont go right for him, but with him being the main voice of WWFC, he must bite his tongue and keep his anger inside, even if he’s ‘right/wrong’. And to me should have been shown the exit door, for those words alone. And as for keeping him till the end of the season, well having only gained 2-21pts, im not sure thats such a good idea, as if that tally of points continues till May we will be relegated, and i dont think even you want that, for our club/supporters do you? 38 – I genuinely DO understand and sympathise with what you’re saying, my friend. The Swansea game would have an embarrassment to behold on Sky TV. Not only the fans’ awful behaviour, though…

…the team’s performance was verging on disrepute, too. So, that did us no favours, either.

I take your point where criticism of doctors, nurses, etc is concerned. However, just how fair a comparison is it? The Health Service has set regulations and standards that MUST be met by NHS Trusts. Failure to do so results in penalties, public enquiries -even dismissals, where necessary. So, they’re ultimately accountable for their actions -as is any manager at any football club.

The big difference, as I see it, is that the NHS is in the public sector, whereas Wolves FC is most definitely in the private sector.

In either case, they’re both accountable to their public -more so football clubs, in some respects, because they’re part of the entertainments industry.

With respect, too, you cannot realistically expect fans to only say “good things” all the time. This is football we’re talking about, my friend. It arouses passions. Long may that be so because, without it, the game’s nothing.

I fully agree with your comments,as usual you always talk sense, regarding the signings of a further CH/Striker etc. I like you said in January last season, we should have bought Shane Long, i felt we only had 4 strikers, and top BPL clubs always run with 4 top strikers, especially given two if not three of our strikers do seem to get injured very easily. And our CH position as always been a joke, considering MM was an ex CH himself, players like Woodgate/Upson would have been ideal on a p.a.y.p.deal. Danns would have been a good signing too, but i fear as he messed us about before Jez/Mick wouldn’t go down that path again with him, which is fair enough i suppose to a point. Id like to see us go in for Huth from Stoke in January,as he doesn’t seem to be getting a regular game, he seems a decent CH to me? UTW:

At the end of last season, I said that I was no fan of MM but when we stayed up. I felt that we should retained him then and I do so now.

The “bo boys” have hounded out two England managers, several other “good managers” and are in danger of doing the same now to a man that has achieved so much forthe club. They destroy the club I have supported all my life.

IMO they are more of an issue to our Premier League survival than MM Gez or anyone else.

How do the negative comments and boos affect the team? Would a new manager be able to chnage things around quickly?

In ANY other business when the company fails the CEO is sacked, maybe Morgan should start looking at his CEO.

Successful Premiership clubs with big gates and a prosperous infrastructure with sound Academy prospects enjoy it because they win games and are capable of competing at the highest level. Their fans can also be critical and loud and arguably the negatives can be interpreted as passion and it takes all kinds to watch a football match. The criticism of fans whatever the type of chants is completely unacceptable and Jez Moxey and the happy clappers should look at our demise in the dark days before Jack Hayward rescued us. Many gates were below 10000 and I wonder if Steve Morgan would be happy with this. Be careful what you wish for.

It looks like MAD MICK has taken us as far as he can with the money the club is going to invest in the team. So if you don’t like it go and watch somebody else or save money and watch it in the pub.
It is as good as its going to be – FACT! Just staying up at best with MAD MICK and clipboard in charge.

Why must he bite his tongue? Respect cuts both ways. I don’t believe any manager should be subjected to the foul abuse that McCarthy had to endure last week. I don’t care whether they are so called “paying customers” or not.

Clearly you are not a fan of McCarthy which is your perogative.

McCarthy is a man who will give as good as he gets. Just like he used to in his playing days. At 50+ years of age he’s not going to change. A bit like Marmite – you either like him or you don’t.

As for your assertion that on the basis of 9 games played Wolves will be relegated, what of the teams that are below us? In recent seasons we have seen many teams start well only to lose points later on, such as Blackpool last season and Hull the previous season. It’s far too early to say where we or anyone else will end up.
If you wish to be pessimistic then so be it. I don’t think McCarthy or the players have thrown the towel in yet and neither the majority of the supporters.

I agree with other posts MAD MICK’S record is poor and not getting better. His days are numbered and Mr Morgan will not put up with him telling the Wolves fans to F-OFF. It won’t be Taxi for Mick please it with be a white van with blacked out windows stright jacket fitted and sectioned if he has another dolls out of pram moment. The next ‘must win’ game I would think…Wigan.

    Well here we are again!
You so called morons attacking Mick are barking mad!
This used to be a big club but we are a small club from a small city.

We have no oligarch from Russia or despot from the Middle East backing us!

We have an owner doing the right things and a manager trying to build upo a team on virtually next to nothing.
Where have we been for the last twenty years?
    nowhere.
    What do you want?
    Eriksson?
    O’Neill?
    Allardyce?

    NONE WILL COME

Get this: with a bunch of morons baying for the manager’s head like you do who the hell would want to manage this club?

NOBODY and certainly not Maertin O’Neill–he will never come here ever!!!

    get a grip

Its time to take a step back and get behind the team.

I just wish Mick would build it round Milijas!
he is our most gifted player.

Hes here till he or Moxey leave by their own making!

Once you make a pact McCarthy – Moxey – Morgan then nothing will break it!

No one wants to get egg on their face….BUT one thing that has happened, the whisperings of Moxey into Morgans ear “dont listen to the supporters, they havent got a clue, I even let albion use their seats and only gave them a pie an pint”

Mr Morgan will one day wake from his zombie enhanced McCarthy, Moxey state and proclaim his sorrow at listening to the lies and misgivings of Moxey…remember the emperors new clothes?

I dont think we will see change this year, maybe not even next year BUT Morgan is a proud, honest businessman who listens to his intrusted personel – UNTIL their guidance proves to become costly – falling attendences, decreasing player value, relegation, lower season ticket sales, lower sky income

Time will tell….lets wait and see…

2 To be fair to Jez I thought his comments yesterday were more balanced than stated above.Bridges need to be built with the fan base. The booing was not restricted to the South Bank. I would like a bit more honesty, most fans even the happy clappers, would have liked to have seen more investment in players in the close season. Why not tell us the truth, because of the ground redevelopment they cut back spending on players in the summer. The money saved being earmarked for phase 2 of the ground redevelopment.Telling the truth would be a good start.

I didn’t like the booing at the time, but I think it had the desired effect. Against City Doyle was sprinting, instead of jogging round the pitch also actually trying to beat an opponent in the air. Ohare closed down quickly when he came on and never stopped running, and generally every player put in more effort. So I think it got to the players in the right way. Now though as against City I think their efforts should be applauded. Must mention Adlene in parts he was brilliant really used the ball well, and kept it well too. I reckon if Mick doesn’t play him regularly he will be off in January.

Feelings are running high for everyone connected with the Club right now & will probably continue to do so for the rest of the season. I’m sure Steve Morgan is feeling just as hurt, angry, disappointed, frustrated as any Wolves Fan across the globe. Sure, I have also been a critic in the past but now firmly believe we are passed that. All the negative rhetoric will not help these players out of their slump. Realistically we are facing another “heavy defeat” against the Billionaires on Saturday – yet I’m sure we will put in a performance like we did last season. Against the Swans we were afraid of playing at home & it showed bigtime. We haven’t had the decisions we should have had in previous games & this will affect performances as the team will be wondering what they have to do to get a result – this in itself will instil below average performances, frustration – but to have your own home support turn on you is disgraceful. Even in the dark days of the Bhatti’s & Div 4 the club had the true hardcore support.

Sure Mick should be able to motivate the players, but once they tread onto the pitch it really is down to the team & the captain. We have vocal players in Hunt, Henry, O’Hara to help the captain on the pitch so where is it.

In summary we are in a slump – so are Notlob, Wigan, Blackburn & I have to belive we can turn it around – no one is going to catch Man City & before we deliver diatribe after Saturdays game just recap on their results this season so far – Spurs 1 – 5 Man City, Man Utd 1 – 6 Man City are 2 that come to my mind.

Come on Wolves Fan get behind the 3M’s for the sake of football & our great club.

39,Kentish Did we stop up last season because of MM or inspite of him? Last game win for definate survival, result Out thought, outplayed, and hammered by a novice manager.
    19 defeats in year 1
    20 defeats in year 2
And as wanderer in Eire points out a paltry return of 25 wins in 126 premiership attempts.
I believe that if MM is ever going to take us on from being just a 17th placer then an experienced(Ray Wilkins)no2 is urgently needed.Problem though is would MM listen to somebody else?.
Finally in response Fan/Supporter jibe how can any one be happy to be Humiliated by QPR outplayed for the majority by Swansea, and saying a 2-5 home defeat is a good result?
    Beggars belief.

Support the team during the game or stay away. As for MM next few results after Man City will decide that but lets look at the 5 years hes been incharge – we’ve had two seasons in the prem and now onto our third – I’d of taken that back then. Very poor against QPR and for 80 mins against Swansea but refs robbed us of points against Liverpool and Newcastle. Would 2 or even 4 more points have everyone chanting magic mick? Would Johnson and Craddock together work?

Noisy, I guess that would be perfectly acceptable to Tom,if you paid him £600,000 a year.I never boo but I was annoyed and ashamed of our performance for 80 minutes against Swansea. The real worry is that this is a season too far and we will end up relegated with only 20 points, or even less.

57.Albrightondek. Actually i think MM is a top championship manager, even a bottom half of the BPL manager. But im afraid i dont rate him a middle/top half of the BPL manager, like many players/managers i think he as his limits, and im sorry i dont see him as the man to take Wolves forward to the next level of the BPL. ‘IMO’ Im sorry but i disagree with you, in that any person who is the main face/voice of a football club should ever come out with words such a F.O to anyone, has i even wrote if he was ‘right/wrong’ like me you’ve watched football for many years, but how many managers have you seen use such language in front of ‘women/kids’ especially when they’ve got a TV camera stuck in their face? Or anytime for that matter at all in your lifetime? As for giving in the towel i wouldnt ever expect that from any ‘player/manager/supporter,that would be totally unacceptable. Im just saying on the basis of 2-21pts we will be relegated, is that not true? If not then the three other teams below us must be far worse than us come May?

Im not a fan of boo-ing the team they dont pick themselves (Ward Excluded), but the manager is fair game..
What the happy clappers and Muppet followers dont seem to understand is, the fans do not expect top 3 positions, they dont expect to spend money like the top 10, but they do expect to see some sign of common sence in the squad selection..
They do expect to see a team that has the apperance of a game plan,
They do expect to see some signs of logical tactics,
With the existing squad i am convinced we could do far better, play some half decent football.
Against MC we actually looked capable of scoreing a very unusual thing to behold for a MM selected squad.
