Wolves boss Mick McCarthy wants to ‘get at’ Manchester City in Carling Cup
Wednesday 26th October 2011, 11:00AM BST.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is calling for the fiery ‘up and at ’em’ game-plan of underdogs as they try to win back the support of Molineux against Manchester City.
The Carling Cup fourth round tie tonight against the richest club in world football returns McCarthy and his team to the scene of Saturday’s ugly mood, which saw some fans demanding the end of his five-year reign during the 2-2 draw with Swansea.
The Wolves boss emerged from the battlefront grateful for what he described as “fantastic support” from fans, club officials and players – and bristling to prove his critics wrong as Wolves tackle a rampant City.
Both managers will field much-changed line-ups but the Molineux boss hopes their presence – and the team’s current troubles – triggers a rousing display of resistance.
McCarthy joked: “That’s what my job entails. I crack on. Get your chest out and chin up and face the challenge. I want a rip-roaring, up and at ’em underdog performance because that’s what we are tonight.”

Another rip roaring performance again Mick.
Can’t wait.
How many goals will we concede God only knows and until we can find a goalscorer,(hopefully from the Academy team)because the so called Prem or Championship forwards cannot do it, we do not stand much of a chance.

leave now while you can and take captain media with u !!

Maybe this is the type of language and tone you should have been using earlier in the week.
Once again, supporters are entitled to an opinion and should be valued one and all regardless of their view on the manager or any other aspect of the football club.
I detct a note of reconciliation in McCarthy`s tone here and in radio interviews last night. Perhaps a word in his ear ?
A battling performance tonight will go a long way to repairing the fractured relationship between paying customers and over paid staff.
Fingers crossed eh………….

Here we go. I’m sure a lot of you lot would have preferred our manager to come out and say ‘We actually have no solidarity whatsoever and we’re going to come out and let Man City take us apart tonight!’ The forum is yours blood thirsty mob…..!

I just hope that all fans give the team and MM 100% support whilst the game is on. Boo them off the pitch at full time if you wish but we as fans demand that players give 100%for the club at all times – let’s as fans lead by example and support the players and manager whilst they are playing. If you’re not happy at the end then by all means show dissaproval – but do it at full time! OK rant over.. why do I get the feeling we could get something from tonights game??

yep, good luck with that one Mick!

Mick giving 100% as usual. He wants Wolves to win and will do everything in his capabilities to make that happen.
Shame not all the fans will be giving 100% and doing everything they can to help us win.
But they pay their money so they have the right to tantrum when they don’t get exactly what they want. They have the right to drive Mick out – just like they did with Taylor and Jones. They have the right to get another Hoddle. They have the right to spend the next 10 years plus outside the top flight.
YOU’VE LET US DOWN AGAIN! (the Wolves fans of course)SHAME on those booing fans who are tearing the club apart just when we are starting to become established in the top flight.

So, if Mick has had what he described as “fantastic support” from fans, where’s the E&S article headlined “McCarthy Thanks Fantastic Fan Support” or something like that ?

Well done Mick. The people who sang “You don’t know what you’re doing” at the substitutions on saturday are still wiping the egg off their faces. I bet you got some satisfaction from that. I prefer to watch Wolves playing away. Those wonderful fans who travel are the very best. I have the utmost respect for them with their unreserved love and backing for the team. They are the real supporters. I don’t know where those gobby jeerers are coming from. They have certainly created a problem now making the players have the fear of making an error. Of course they won’t be there tonight will they. They will have all their excuses to stay home and watch it on telly. At least we won’t have to put up with their negativity. Stay away for good, I say! I bet it is a good game with some nice footy from both sides.

Gonna try hard to get up for it and do my bit tonight, but it’s a two-way thing Mick – the players have also got to get us going – they’ve gotta take some risks going forward and stop bloody taking ‘em at the back!
I’m a North-Bank man myself and since we have been moved back in there, the atmosphere is terrible. We have not been moved back (as promised) amongst our friends – we’re all over the place and it’s hard to get motivated. I know it sounds stupid, but I honestly think this re-development has contributed greatly to the team’s performances at home. I find meself just sitting there getting depressed!
Jez – why was it so hard to put us back where we were ? It don’t seem like rocket science to me – I know not all of us would have been lucky (maybe the back few rows would miss out), but surely normal service amongst the majority would have helped ?

Despite all of the events in past weeks, the hatred thrown at Manager McCarthy, the clown like performances of the Wolves manager, and the fact that Wolves, our club, is seen by many as a complete joke, and destined for relegation, our beloved leader and owner Mr Morgan, elects to continue to hide from the shame that this idiot had created for this club.
When is Mr Morgan going to stand up and deal with this massive problem, and appoint a man or woman capable of doing a much better job, which, with McCarthy’s track record will not be a difficult task.
We do not want Mr Morgan trotting out the excuses like last season in relation to keeping stability in the club and not going down the road of changing managers….Its far too late for that Mr Morgan, all your loyal and patient fans and supporters require is a date as to when you intend moving Mccarthy out….Thank you

I expect a decent performance tonight as it’s likely we’ll change the team around (at last) and players like Guedioura, Milijas, Hunt, Zubar, Fletcher, Craddock, Hammil and De Vries etc will come in and make a difference and prove they ate better then the players currently in the first team, such as Henry, O’Hara, Jarvis, Johnson, Berra, Stearman etc.
De Vries
Doherty Zubar Craddock Elokobi
Hammil Guedioura Edwards Milijas Hunt
Fletcher
No doubt if we win, like the previous round, all the players will be dropped anyway and not given a chance to play in the premiership over the underperforming players and favourites!

It’s a pity the same attitude wasn’t applied against QPR, Newcastle, West Brom, and Swansea.
The problem is the first team are all ‘programmed’ to go sideways and backwards.
Last Saturday against Swansea our keeper was booting the ball up field within 4 seconds of kick off and WE kicked off.

Mcarthy ain’t the man to take us to the next level ,check the stats, use your eyes.If somebodies opinion differs to yours —your correct are you?
He’s had 5 years and a decent amount of cash plus a good level of crowd support yet he continues to play his favourites and this year we can’t string more than 4 passes together and get embarrassed by 2 freshly promoted teams at home.
Unable to influence games by making tactical substitutions or formation changes he continues to bungle his way around the Molineux telling sections of unhappy fans to F off ,whilst were expected to continue paying good money to watch this tripe, followed by a his usual deflective post match sarcastic interview.
£150 I spent on the trip to the Hawthorns —value for money ????
Get with the real world ,your the mindless idiot for thinking this man is capable of anything but destroying us before Christmas .

By talking of the “fantastic support” he has received from fans, McCarthy sounds like he is trying to build bridges after the unpleasantness(on both sides) of the last few days. MM’s attitude to fans’ criticism contrasts starkly with that of Steve Kean at Blackburn. Kean is under even more intense pressure, with fans openly demonstrating and calling for him to be sacked. However he handles it all with dignity and good grace. Here is part of what he said in a newspaper interview today.
“I’m old enough, and wise enough, and thick-skinned enough to know that not everybody in the ground is going to be supportive. “Maybe they think I shouldn’t be the manager. I think supporters get frustrated like anyone else and I suppose they want to air their frustrations. I’m a firm believer that a supporter is a supporter of a club through thick and thin. And we need the supporters at the moment.”
No diatribes, no insults, no “I know best” attitude there. Maybe MM could take a leaf out of his book. Picking a fight with a section of the fans who criticise him (even those who, wrongly, indulge in personal abuse) can only be detrimental to the club as a whole.
So here’s hoping for a bit of “one for all and all for one” spirit to-night from everyone to quell the rumblings of civil war around Molineux, whatever happens on the pitch.

Remember the story of the dying man who asked each of his nine children to bring him a stick at his bedside? This done he asked them to tie all the sticks together in a bundle. Then he asked each one to break the bundle. All tried but none could break it. He then asked them to untie the bundle and each one to take one stick. Now try and break that. Each tried and all broke their individual stick.
ALWAY remember this, were his dying words. If you are united you are strong and nobody can break you. But if you disagree and each go your separate ways ANYONE can break you!
Unity then.

Love him or hate him, MM comments since Saturday have won plaudits across all sections of the media and it is we the fans being accused of having short memories and over inflated expectations who are made to look the villains in all this! We are fast becoming ridiculed as ‘fans’ and berated for our lack of support of a team low on confidence……..surely enough is enough!

26) If you think that the left back position is our weak link in defence this season, you obviously never go to games. Ward alongwith Hennessey are our most consistent performers this season. Ridgewell is not that good in anycase and furthermore, I think he is injured.
Man City might rip us apart tonight but I have a feeling that we might see a decent performance? The reason why is that a lot of the players on show, should be our first team!

Mick McCarthy may still have the dressing room, although that remains to be seen, but his arrogant behaviour towards his “paying customers” is tantamount to suicide !!
Customer is always right, I was taught, if not always face to face, tell the customer what they want to hear, then do your own thing when the door is closed or the cameras stop rolling, in his case.
I think he has woken up this morning and realised what he has done, so now the “Spin” starts – “up and at ‘em” is the cry for this evenings match against Citeh, me thinks it’s too late Mr McCarthy.
How many managers in the football profession have taken on the clubs supporters and won ?
How many managers have called the supporters “mindless idiots” and got away with it ?

It’s not all MM’s fault! The build up at the beginning of the season from most was we would be able to finish top half. Unfortunately when you start a season with only 3 strikers(i use this term loosely) and still without a left back which we’ve searching for since MM took over then what do the powers that be expect! We were told to compare our situaution to Stoke’s. Difference is they didn’t just sign 1 different outfield player to what they had last year and expect to reach mid table security with no problems!?

Mr wonderful didnt even want to play Fletcher last season and didnt make subs until it was too late in most matches…Seb was getting the odd 10 minutes.

This squad is mid table capable..but Mccarthy either seems Hellbent on making life hard for himself with his retarded team selections and tatics or he really is just totally thick and cant see that certain can not player in a certain position.
Also, Sorry but Vokes is not Premiership or even Championship (as shown last season) class

Despite the pen-name I am Wolverhampton born & bred. The recent bile directed at the manager and some of the players by so-called supporters is actually true to form. It seems that the people of Wolverhampton have a real in-built desire to spit hatred at anyone they take a dislike to. The appalling treatment of their victims ( most recently Karl Henry and Steven Ward ) tells us a lot about the mean-spirited selfishness of the people themselves. Maybe they have lousy jobs, or are out of work or have some other “reason” to be jealous of players but supporters they are not.
Mc Carthy does not need to back track on his comments or criticisms of “fans” because he’s right. Ignorant, vindictive, often barely literate and happy to jump on any bandwagon they find rolling by the boo boys are an utter disgrace. Watch their twisted faces on the tv clip- utter yobbery of the most disgusting kind.
I am not happy with the present situation but Mick McCarthy is a decent and determined bloke. Give him his chance. Support the team. Oh, and if anyone wants to write poison in response to this post, don’t waste my time expecting me to read the usual illiterate drivel.

Be carefull what you wish for, carry on insulting Messrs Morgan, Moxey & Mcarthy, and you may get what you so desperatly want. An owner who cannot cover his debts (Birmingham City), a spend, spend spend approach (Portsmouth), and an ex England Manager who destroys squads (Wolves). Not to mention the likes of where we have come from, Bankrupt. What do you think Steve Morgan and the team want, possibly the same as the fans? Stop harrassing when we should be gratefull we are not languishing in debt, we have no highly paid so called super stars, and certainly not a manager who quits because the club doesent meet his expectations, (Mark Hughes,Martin O’Neil). We all feel let down sometimes, so does Mick, but this is our Third year in the EPL!, I for one realise that Wolves are in pretty safe hands, regardless of if we are relegated. Who is in charge?,you sitting abusing the manager, not knowing alot about the situation in your seat , or having to make the decicions based on what you know about your team of players? Be carefull , be very carefull…..

I am a lifelong Manchester City supporter, I come in peace. I can honestly say most City supporters know only to well what it’s like when you pay good money week in week out to watch the club you’ve followed all you’re life, and you’re either not happy with the performances in relation to the manager, chairman/ owners etc etc.
Just food for thought for all the Wolves Supporters, my club have been as low as division two no so long ago and I can tell you that is so difficult when the other team from Stretford assisted by Sir Taggert won everything in sight. Manchester City has been very very fortunate in gaining an owner with vast wealth to get us where we have always wanted to be.
However be careful what you wish for regarding sacking the manager and hounding him out, I’d been there like so many other City supporters in our darkest times. It achieves nothing other than having a negative effect on the squad; I personally think Wolves have more than enough to easily stay in the premier league with the current players and Mick McCarthy at the helm.
Anyway may the best team win on the night and Saturday, good look for the rest of the season fellas.

LANE!
MM will use the players as he see’s fit. Yes he scored and didn’t get to start…. it was a rubish Milwall team after all. MM will use all of his squad to do what he thinks is best before and during the game. Just because he doesn’t start does not mean he is not an important part of MM plans! he came on in the last 3rd of the Swans game, injected some forward midfield attacking gameplay and help the TEAM secure a point. I’m not a manager and im not going to through a hissy fit if the manager doesn’t do what I expect. Have trust and faith in the team and it will be alright on the night =)
When you listen to MM don’t you hear a down to earth character? honest and says it like it is. I would rather have that than someone who hides behind pleasantries and false hope and humble verbal diarrhea (e.g warnock and holloway).

Dear Express and Star
You don’t need to print this comment but in a bid to repair some of the relations between club and fans please could you start running some positive stories around the excellent support being voiced in this thread? It seems to me that the ‘mindless idiots’ (sic) seem to be being heard loudest of all when actually the majority seem to be backing our great club rather than bringing it in to disrepute!
As our much redpected local rag I am sure Premiership status of all of our clubs is quite precious to you so isn’t it time you started making it clear to everyone that there is far more support for MM and the lads out there than they might believe?
Perhaps you might see it as your place as the voice of the town to bring about a rallying call and organise a show of support for the lads! Try running a campaign that shows the lads that we are behind them and will support them to the end!
Just one for your editors meeting in the morning! Please give it some thought, I’m sure you’d get some very favourable exposure from the national media!
Up the Wolves……my Wolves!

“up and at ‘em” shouldn’t we of deployed that tactic against Swansea? It looked like the players were told to stand off them and let them play football! Even we had 11 outstanding performances tonight and actualy beat city….. I wonder how many would start on the weekend?! Bit of a rhetorical question as the answer is 0! We will stick with the same players regardless of form! As much as I like them Ohara and Jarvis haven’t played well at all! What do AG and SH have to do to get a game?

The revulsion towards the behaviour of a significant section of Wolves supporters has been widespread – and the criticism has been coming from all angles.
The Guardian’s Barry Glendenning tweeted that the fans were “clowns”, ESPN’s Daniel Pountney suggested they “grow up” and the WSC message boards were alive with the hot topic: “Are Wolves fans fickle?”
But this was nothing compared to the assessment of those within the club itself. Mick McCarthy labelled his detractors “mindless idiots” while captain Roger Johnson had already called the fans “a disgrace”.
Everything points to the conclusion that Wolves fans are ungrateful characters who believe they have a divine right to success.
But there are two sides to this particular story. And although those within the club will now allow people to run with the idea of a small club and its over-demanding fans, for those living in this one-club city a very different picture emerges.
After all, there are many who remember the words of Jez Moxey, the club’s chief executive, back in March of this year when he told supporters:
“The aim is to get us back where everyone thinks we belong. We are kidding ourselves if we think we can usurp Manchester United, but we think we can get to just below that level – in the top three, four or five clubs where we can be competing in Europe.”
It was a remarkable claim as it far outweighed even the long-term ambitions of many a hardcore supporter. And while McCarthy was slightly more pragmatic, his comments in May appeared to buy into the idea of speedy progress:
“Every year I’ve been here we’ve improved. If we survive then I won’t be looking for that experience again – I’ll be looking for the experience of trying to finish in the top ten rather than out of the bottom three.”
When survival did come that month – with just three minutes to spare – the club was quick to announce a breathtaking redevelopment of Molineux that would see three of the four stands rebuilt.
To the surprise of many, it was reported that plans had been drafted that could see the capacity increased to an astonishing 50,000 seats.
The message was clear – this is a club going places – and supporters in a city badly hit by the financial crisis were encouraged to snap up the limited number of season tickets that would be available while Molineux’s capacity would be reduced due to the redevelopment.
Given these grand plans, there was some disappointment when only three players were signed in the summer.
Dorus de Vries joined on a free transfer as a reserve keeper, Roger Johnson arrived to much fanfare and Jamie O’Hara – a key member of the team that had survived on the last day – saw his loan deal made permanent.
But again the word from the club was emphatic. Chairman Steve Morgan told fans in an interview on BBC Radio WM earlier this month that Wolves were the fifth biggest net spenders in the Premier League over the past three seasons having spent more than £40million on new players.
It was a case of horrible timing. On the field, Wolves were embarking on their worst run of defeats in more than a quarter of a century.
Five matches were lost, with the team two goals down by half-time at home to QPR and Newcastle as well as losing the Black Country derby to West Bromwich Albion by two goals to nil.
When this scoreline looked set to be repeated against newly-promoted Swansea, things reached tipping point.
Nothing anybody says will convince people there was anything constructive about the chants heard at Molineux on Saturday.
But those season ticket holders did not pluck their grand ideas from thin air.
For the so-called 3Ms – Moxey, McCarthy and Morgan – this is a monster of their own making.

Should have had an ‘Up and At Them’ attitude against Swansea. If we had have done us fans may not have been called ‘mindless idiots’ for complaining about the performance. GET YOUR BAGS MICK AND GET OUT OF OUR CLUB.

Calm, well written and commonsense 70 and 74.
Yes, the Express & Star could do more to unite fans but then there wouldn’t be the easy and cheap headlines would there? The result tonight matters little either way but it gives manager and players a chance to try something different.
As the old slogan says “Keep calm and carry on”.

I wonder how many of you will be on saturday after a couple of heavy defeats and we will be sitting in the bottom 3 again, why give a churchill type speech for a cup game.It makes you wonder why he does not say this before premier league game.He seems to think there is going to be a crowd tonight but i think you will all see people will vote with their feet.People are not airing their anger about the players as he is saying, they are unhappy about his tactics, formation and refusing to admit to himself about changing a starting 11.A player without fear of being dropped after 5 defeats is not a hungry player. The more a yes man mick player the more selected he becomes. It makes you think if he reacts like he does to the fans what is he like with a player who disagree.Bruce,Kean and Coyle are under pressure but do you see them reacting to the fans. Can not see his tenure lasting much longer whatever he says he has dug his own grave and upset too many people

Ive said it before, i dont paticularly want Mick out (theres no one else to have for a start) BUT COULD SOMEONE ELSE pick the team please..
“When you listen to MM don’t you hear a down to earth character?”
Nah, i hear someone who (in their own mind) is never wrong..ever.
Milijas your not even on the bench this week…oh Milijas your staring a fierce local derby this week with your silky skills.
Whatda ya mean we have a tenacious tough tackling player called Hunt?? nah not gonna play him in a local derby

Why can’t MM come out with more “up and at em” type remarks before games? I’m sure the team would play much better after that kind of remark, rather than the kind he delivered about Spurs (in particular). Try building our team up for a change instead of the opposition and the results just might get better!

I think we should all get behind the team tonight whatever happens. It is clear that Mick isn’t going to change his view and the chairman won’t sack him so we are set for another season of heartbreak.
O’Neill will not come here and we might end up with Eriksson if he were sacked anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let Nenad and Adlene run the show tonight and you just never know…

43) You are using statistics based on a Sunderland club that gave the manager a pittance. So his record is bound to look bad. Interestingly you do not quote his promotion record, when he amassed just under 200 points over the 2 Championship winning season’s. Saying this I too am not happy with the fact that he is playing the same back four and no Guedioura.
As for Moxey coming out to speak? It would not be the wisest after he came out in March and said we cannot compete with Man Utd ‘but we think we can get to just below that level – in the top three, four or five clubs where we can be competing in Europe’. No wonder there are problems in the camp with the minimal outlay.
44) About time someone spoke some sense!

Mick you lowered yourself to the standard of the boo boys with your after match comments on tv and the mindless idiots statement !The 3Ms made promises to the fans regarding new players, particularley DEFENDERS, we got one? On paper we are still a championship side and therefore we will struggle like we have done for the last two seasons.
Sorry but if you want the players to improve then so must the MANAGEMENT.

2 Veiws from Molineux
Glass half full
MM has taken us up and so far kept us there. He has done extreeeemly well on a fairly limited budget. We have played some good atacking football and beaten some of the top clubs. In other games we have been very unlucky not to have won/ drawn. We always seem to be unlucky with refereeing decicions, especially at home but we have a great fighting spirit and never give up. MM will turn this slump around for us to finish mid table.
Glass half empty
MM got us in to the Prem and has just about kept us there (but for how long)We should be a fairly well established prem team now considering the Millions he has spent but instead he buys some players and does not play them or plays them out of position. He has no plan b and has no clue on tactics. His pigheaded attitude that he knows best will kill the team and allianate the fans. Stick with Mick and we will be relegated!!!
Which one are you????
Come on me Babbies

This is the first time ive ever posted a comment on any blog, but im sick of hearing Wolves this, Mick that. My opinion is that MM has done a great job with very limited resources. He took over a good few years ago with Only 11 pro’s and £1m to spend. We now have a Prem team trying to consolidate. Im frustrated that MM hasn’t been given more funds and instead Moxey is ploughing £50m into the Molineux and training ground. For me its too early to invest money on the ground. MM has needed those funds for some time. Sure he’d love to have signed Wright-phillips and Crouch only to watch QPR & Stoke sign them. So in summary for me, board, plz invest in MM, he knows what he’s doing and earnt the right. Fans, man up, support the team, be the 12th man and save boo’s for the Grand Theatre plz.
