Wolves boss prefers playing 4-4-2

Mick McCarthy today admitted Wolves are better suited to playing 4-4-2 – but revealed David Edwards is the club’s best at operating ‘in the hole’ if they play one up front.
McCarthy’s decision to change to a 4-4-1-1 system in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Liverpool, using Edwards rather than Adlene Guedioura behind lone striker Kevin Doyle, has become a major debating point among Wolves fans.
And the manager conceded he prefers Wolves in the more orthodox system.
He said: “We’re better with two strikers to be fair. We’ve only played 4-4-1-1 once and, if you look at the Liverpool game again, David Edwards played just like a deep-lying striker.
“Not everything he touched turned to gold – maybe that was because he’d just come back and playing against Millwall at home is a different game to playing at Liverpool at Anfield.
“But that’s his best position. I don’t think the formation had any bearing on it. It had no bearing on the goals, but the goals had a bearing on the game.”
McCarthy believes Guedioura needs an injury-free run to prove his worth.
The manager said: “We’ve seen the best of him in bits. But I don’t think we’ve seen collectively the best of him because he’s never been fit for long enough.”
