Kevin Doyle signs new Wolves deal

Kevin Doyle signs new Wolves deal

Wolves today announced Kevin Doyle has signed a new four-year contract to end speculation on his future.

The talismanic striker, who has recently turned 28, has decided to effectively pledge the best years of his career to the Molineux cause until 2015, when he will be nearly 32.

Doyle, who cost a then club-record £6.5million in June 2009, has again been the subject of interest as he entered the final two years of his existing deal, but the striker today revealed he had already decided to commit again to the club back in July.

Arsenal, Juventus and Liverpool, who had a £9million bid turned down for Doyle during Roy Hodgson’s reign in August 2010 and were again linked in the last transfer window, are all big fans of the Republic of Ireland international.

But the former Reading striker had already given his word to McCarthy.

Doyle said: “I don’t really think there was anything in  the speculation this summer. I spoke to the gaffer on the first day of pre-season when we talked about this contract and I was keen to get it done.

“It’s been agreed for a while between myself and the manager – it was just a case of everything getting sorted.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here and am very happy to have signed the deal.”

It’s not known if there is a release clause in his new contract, but Doyle takes his commitment to contracts very seriously and has thought long and hard about where he wants to play his football.

And the forward, who has scored 18 goals in 74 games in gold and black, clearly feels being such a major player for Wolves means more to him than being perhaps a lesser light but having a better chance of winning honours elsewhere.

The main reasons behind his decision to stay is his relationship with McCarthy and the vision of chairman Steve Morgan.

Doyle said: “When you look what’s being done with the stadium and the plans for the training ground, you can see a long term plan which is exciting to be part of.

“There’s a real feeling the club is going places and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

“Hopefully, in four years, we will see Wolves consolidated in the top division.”

Sources close to Doyle say they have never known players to enjoy such a good relationship with a manager as they do with McCarthy.

McCarthy said: “From when he arrived, he’s been the consummate professional.

“He remains a big part of what we’re trying to achieve.”

I am happy to have Doyle, he just must start scoring some goals, most fans agree we should play a 4411 formation sometimes and the one behind the scoring striker can easily be Doyle. That is what he is doing most of the time anyway but DOH there is no scoring striker ahead of him.

wolfie – Considering 1 year left on a contract means a lower transfer fee than 4 years left, I think its fair to say contracts are worth quite a bit.

Doyle is a class act and even though he is struggling to score goals at the moment, hes stil capable of winning us games from his work rate. All people seem to think about is the goals, but forget about all the times he closes down defenders, wins us free kicks, holds the ball up and makes assists. Even when hes not on the ball, hes clearly contributing, moving out wide bringing a defender with him , opening up space for another player in the box. He is capable of scoring more goals for us, as he proved at this level with Reading, so hopefully he can get those goals this season.

It was no co-incidence last year that our slump in form towards the end of the season co-incided with Doyle being out injured.

Front two of Doyle and Fletch with decent back-up in SEB and McFadden will keep us up this year no worries.

Great bit of business by the club, ok he doesn’t get a lot of goals but he does so much more for the team hence his long list of admirers, also the simple fact remains that this is our 3rd consecutive season in the Premier League and Doyle in our first season along which Fletcher last season have played the biggest part in helping us achieve that.

To all the Doyle haters please just bore off, you obviously don’t go down the Wolves, he should be given a new contract for his displays against Man U and Villa alone last season, not to mention the 10 goals he got a couple seasons ago to pretty much keep us in the League.

Now to Saturday, Newcastle are in good form and this will not be an easy match, I think it’s a case of stopping the rot this weekend and a clean sheet should be our priority. Based on recent form and players available the team should be:

    GK: Hennessey

    RB: Doherty
    CB: Johnson
    CB: Berra
    LB: Ward

    CM: Guedioura
    CM: O’Hara
    CM: Milijas

    RW: Doyle
    CF: Fletcher
    LW: Hammill

Subs: De Vries, Stearman, Henry, Hunt, Jarvis, Edwards, Spray

However we all know Mick has his favourites so I don’t expect Milijas or Hammill to be given their chance. Whatever team I’ll be there Saturday supporting them, not watching it in some boozer with clueless wannabe fans chatting rubbish about our best player!!

We have to look at a 4-4-2 formation in most home games and not too many away games, I would say. This very much depends on the opposition though, as we found out against QPR. Their first choice midfield of Derry, Faurlin, Barton, Tarabbt and Wright-Phillips is a match for most and strongest part of the team. In other games it has to be a 4-5-1 and that does not have to mean two wingers? Players like Doyle or McFadden can do that job and Fletcher should be the spearhead.
Good news but providing Doyle plays the bulk of the games, he needs to be getting double figures and therefore up the ante. Let’s see some goals on Saturday against Newcastle. They have had a good start but are very much beatable!

Some of the posters on here make me smile! – We have in theory just secured the services of the most skilful player we have at the club for 4 years and already the knockers are at it putting him down. There is no one in the Wolves squad who can hold a ball up at the sharp end of the pitch better and considering that we need to revert back to 4-5-1 for most away games and a number of home ones this season in an attempt to accumulate points against the better sides we need his ability greatly. I understand that contract extensions also only mean Wolves are securing a decent transfer fee in the future if the situation changes I an not niave , and I think Fletcher is also an excellent striker who currently seems to be able to score more easily than his higher profile partner but we need them both this season and I for one am glad Doyle is happy to stick with us.

He shines like a beacon of quality in an otherwise entirely mediocre team for me.

Okay, he’s not a prolific goal scorer but his level of skill and his ability to hold up the ball and bring other players into the game rank amongst the best in the league.

The first name on the team sheet for me, Kevin Doyle everytime.

If Mad Mick sorted out our midfield and our very obvious defencsive problems, then we’d have a half decent team.

I think its great news, Kevin is an excellent player, who works his socks off,for his team mates and his manager, and for the supporters, and gets alot of clogging from most defenders. The only thing i would add is, i think its time Kevin started getting a bit more greedy in/around the box, instead of looking to pass so often, on Saturday you could see that one time in the box, he looked a little lost as to what to do with the ball. He needs to start shooting more whenever he gets in a goalscoring position, he can score goals he’s already proved that with Reading an Wolves, and with Steven Fletcher alongside him, i believe we’ve got a top pairing of strikers.UTW:

I am not a great wrap for Kevin Doyle as a striker, or a Premiership player for that matter, so I take the news that mad Mick has signed the lad for another four years badly.
How can anyone compare Doyle with the likes of Carrol of Liverpool, or even Johnson of Fulham, they are strikers who get goals, thank the lord we have Fletcher, and the quicker we get McFadden the better
I have watched Kevin Doyle in all games this season, and the majority of last season, and while he may well shine in the Championship, he is not worth what ever Wolves pay him as a striker.
Agreed, Doyle runs all day, generally like a headless chicken, falls over when beaten for the ball, and is on the deck more often than ‘Humpty Dumpty’. In one game recently I counted eleven times he was guilty of complaining to the Ref, to no avail, and clearly , he has been guilty of ‘diving’ once in the goal area of the opposing side more often than not.
I do not rate him if Wolves have any hope of going forward this season, and believe that he will struggle to get a game if we are fortunate enough to sign McFadden
I believe signing him for another four years is just another McCarthy blooper

I’m pleased that Doyle has signed a new contract, but not that surprised. From the quotes that get reported from time to time he always seems to express a positive view of the club and a wish to stay.

Much more interesting are the comments showing how the rest of the players feel about the manager and the club in general.

Very few players seem to want to leave the club even though their chances of first team football appear at times to be limited. This only confirms that there is nothing wrong with the morale at the Molineux. In the coming months this may serve us well, as tensions and disagreements arise at other clubs in the lower half of the table.

I am very surprised that a few Wolves fan’s seem to think, that Doyler is such an important cog in the wolves team.
Doyle had a terrific first season, not only his goals but he was first class in all he did.
Last season oppossing defenders started to get a grip with Doyle’s style of play.
This season one only as to look at the statistics and his performances and realise that at best he has been “POOR”.
Doyle is a very good player when on song,as the first season in the premiership proves.
I for one since last season, have been questioning his shot ratio, heading at goal ratio and the most important his scoring record and unfortunately these statistics leave a hugh question mark whether he deserves a start.
Personally I think he should be used as a sub and see how he reacts, may be being Mick’s buddy he is just not performing knowing he is second name on team sheet after Henry.
However I am pleased he as signed has a fireing Doyle can be good for our team,he will never score more than 10goals in the premiership but other aspects of his play can and have paid dividends.
As for other teams coming in for Doyle this as never been the case, never, this does not reflect on the player but his goalscoring exploits are not good enough, hence no offers.
I would however add for Micks croonies, you just cant be watching wolves ever!!

if im mistaken the majority of people slagging kevin doyle off, who runs through brick walls for us plays the lone furrow better than most in the prem and is committing himself to US, were overjoyed when the lad signed from reading..we aint that good we can look down out noses at this talented and hard working lad, suppose ward will get the same treatment when he sign’s one..good work mm jm and sm.

Great news, top player and in my opinion he is the best at the club in what he does for the team. Player of the year in his first season, has been asked to play up front and lead the line on his own for most of his time at Wolves (which is why you will never see him on 20 goals a season)

Hard working and a willing runner who will pull defenders into the channels, holds the ball up and generally takes a battering for the team. Even in the role he plays he will get us 10 goals a season.

Headless chicken…? do me a favour, Doyle is a class act!

The comments on here actually prove that there a number of people posting comments that claim to be Wolves Supporters but at best are merely ‘followers’ and at worst Baggies Fans.

Anyone who thinks it is clever to have a go at the club resigning a proven Premiership and International Footballer is beyond being called a Numpty.

Go away WE WOLVES SUPPORTERS don’t need your negativity.

Every thing this club does you choose to slag off – you are not Supporters by any definition of the word. Stop claiming any support for the club, your right to comment is diminished by your underlying hatred for all things Gold and Black.

I think this is a good move, I dont think Doyle is a bad player I think its the way we play and the average players he has around him. I think that Doyle and Fletcher are as good as any strikers in the second tier of the prem league and could get us 15 goals each. Bolton,WIgan etc dony have these nor do Villa except Bent who wont be there long

hmm i really understand where some wolves fans are coming. I mean it’s terrible news that one of if not our best player has shown loyalty to the3 club and signed a new 4 year deal. What are the 3 m’s thinking? Securing your prize assets on longer deals to increase they’re value is no way to run a club!
Seriously this is great news and the majority of us know waht he brings to the3 team and hopefully this will bring a big morale boost to the dressing room just before an important home game.

I’d rather have Doyle anyday then someone like Tevez(mercanery), can’t get why some people slate him, great professional, in my view really good player perhaps he could score more goals but everything else about him is class..

He knows which side his bread is buttered. With a goal scoring record like his what other premiership team would even consider him? Don’t believe all the paper talk about Arsenal etc. It is just that Paper Talk.

80 It isn’t a question of disliking Doyle. I am sure he is a nice lad and a willing worker. The fact still remains, he has been brought in and is being paid to score goals. The team is dropping down the league at the same rate has Doyle’s total league goals ratio is dropping.

We all know people at work who are polite, nice people who give plenty of effort, but achieve nothing. More often than not, Doyle is seen on the wings. How does he score from there? Why isn’t he in the box waiting for the cross? The lad is simply not achieving what he was bought for. Don’t forget, he has even been substituted when playing for his country. Doesn’t that tell you the national manager has given up on him ever scoring in the match?
