Wolves kick off James McFadden talks

Wolves will today kick off talks with the agent of James McFadden to bring the versatile forward to Molineux.

The 28-year-old Scotland international is into his second week of full training with Wolves, as he battles back from a cruciate knee ligament injury that has kept him out for a year.

McFadden, who is a free agent after his Birmingham contract expired in June, was linked with Sunderland at the weekend and Wolves manager Mick McCarthy wants to get the deal done as quickly as possible.

He said: “We’ll have a discussion with his agent. I’m sure there is other interest. There’s never been a player yet where there’s only been one club in for him.

“But nothing is happening as yet. He’s training fine and we’ll just see what happens.”

Given McFadden’s long-term injury, a pay-as-you-play deal has been speculated on.

But Wolves are staying tightlipped on the finer details of any contract at the moment.

McCarthy, however, is keen to tie up a deal for McFadden as Sylvan Ebanks-Blake remains under treatment for a medial ligament injury.

The Wolves boss said: “Sylvan is still injured. I haven’t an idea when he’ll be fit. Hopefully it will be as soon as possible, but he’s not training with the squad yet at all.”

    2 things
1 we should have got a striker in the transfer window and Mcfadden would do us a good job as I think were struggling at the moment

2 not for the reported £60,000 a week we could have got someone loads better for that

    See it all before

Can’t we have some money knocked off cos he’s broken ??

Yet another player we sign injured – still, not like we need goals at the moment is it.

    1) If he was fit, he would have been ideal to play instead of Edwards last Saturday ie in the hole. I agree that the reported £60k a week, is too steep.
Team for Newcastle needs to be reverted back to a 4-4-2. Fletcher is undoubtably our main goalscoring threat, at present. I would suggest that we play Doherty and I would like to see Hammill instead of either Hunt/Jarvis but it probably will not happen?

As it is obvious the club want him, it will be annoying (you can put an expletive in front for emphasis) if he goes to Sunderland after two weeks of sharpening up with us.

He looks about as strong as our other midfielders and will get knocked off the ball so easy like the others.
Again he is no better than what we have already got and won’t get a fair go unless he becomes a favourite to Mick anyway..
Loose on Sat and it’s relegation battle again…

Although the 60k a week would be steep, as he I’d on a play and pay contract, would it really matter unless we played him every week?

I think McFadden would be a decent signing. Hes versatile and a decent player, and could be a very useful player in the event of injuries. Hes also experienced and can offer us something different to our other attacking players. On a free transfer, I feel it would be a win win situation if he can stay fit. I cant think of any other proven premiership players that we could get for free that are as good as him.

He is a good player and I hope we sign him. My only concern is that he has been out for such a long time, it will take him a while to regain his sharpness. You only need to look at how long it took Stephen Hunt (when we first signed him) or Kightly (who still doesn’t seem totally sharp). SEB will probably be back playing by the time McFadden finds his feet again.

His goals to games ratio is nothing to get excited about. While he is a talented player we need someone who can convert chances more often.

Yes I agree should have added during the window, linked with many signed nobody. Good to see Zubes back and would like to see the hopeless Berra replaced in due course.

Also think Jarvo needs a reality check, Hammill needs a run out from the start.

    That is all….

    Do we ever learn? No

Why on earth buy a player who has been injured for so long and doesn’t score goals, when the need is urgent now for a goal scorer.

    The reason lack of ambition

How many of our own players has McCarthy bought back after long term injury before they are ready because he is desperate for them to play.

The feelings of last season are creeping in again.

And there are load of 25 goal a season strikers available on a free transfer right now arent there?!

He`s looking at bringing someone who can play more than one position – wing, in the hole and up front. He can also take penalties and can take corners.

We can’t buy anyone else – the transfer window is shut.

would be a good signing, watched sunderland with a new team lose to newly promoted norwich last night, think they need more than a miracle.

a couple of additions to the team that played second half against liverpool on saturday and the same attitude against the geordies and we should get 3 points on the board. utw

Why is everybody so concerned about the lack of goals?? Didn’t we score 5 against Millwall and 5 against Northampton?

Understandably to lower league opposition, but the problem for me isn’t the lack of goals for Wolves, it’s the lack of goals for Doyle.

I am concerned for him, he needs to be on the score sheet every other week and he isn’t.

I’d be very tempted to drop him if he fails to net aganst Newcastle.

I see on another page that MM has said that Doherty may play on Sat because Zubar isn’t ready after only playing 1 reserve game. Whilst I agree with what Mick is saying ref Doherty playing, (personally think he could be a great player for us from what i’ve seen) I don’t get why he didn’t use the same strategy on Sat against Liverpool and play Edwards from the start. Surely Adlene or Milijas should have been in front of him based on this theory??

This guy is a striker. Usually good strikers cost a lot of money so taking a risk on a player who has been good over the years and maybe paying a tad more in wages should be seen as worth it as there is no initial fee.

I am, like many, a bit disappointed we did not sign a striker in the Summer and we look short of decent goal scorers at the moment, certainly when Fletch isnt fit. We hadnt scored in 3.5 games and it took Fletcher 4 mins when he came on. Massive difference.

Anyway, get the deal done and see what happens.
I hope we beat Newcastle as 5 games without a win would see us somewhere down the bottom again after an encouraging start.

I remember O’hara last year saying “our attitude is right now, after the Villa game everyone was telling us we would stay up”, time to get that attitude right again lads like at the start of the season. Second half at L’pool was encouraging again however.

    22) I forgot that you work for the club. I am fairly certain that both O’Hara and Doyle are on more than £30-35k and probably Johnson?
They may well pay £60k a week, as there is no signing on fee and he might not play every week and then he does not get paid!

No way will WW pay him £60K per week for him. No-one at WW is on more than £40k pw. Nor breaking the wage policy is VITAL for the TEAM ethos. Having said that somebody like Sunderland could pinch him by offering more. Don’t get too excited – this is a big gamble on a player coming back froma serious long term injury.

Brilliant, he has been out for so long he should fit in nicely with Kightly and Edwards in Mick favourites selections process. I see Zubar got through ok last night but Mick said he needs more games. Strange how some players do but apparently his favourites don’t. If the three wise Ms had invested properly during the transfer window we wouldn’t be having to look at this type of player

Sorry Mick but you reassured the fans SEB was only out for 3-4 weeks hence no activity at the end of the window. We are now grubbing around out of contract players when we should have paid the going rate on a loan fee for a decent striker.

Don’t we already have a star striker in our £6.5 mill International hitman? In the Express and Star we were told he is good for a bagful of league goals.

We can now follow the Doyle season’s league goals bagful ratio. Updated each week to see the final predicted goal tally for the season.

    Game 3 goals 1 Bagful ratio 12.7

    Game 4 goals 1 Bagful ratio 9.5

    Game 5 goals 1 Bagful ratio 7.6

    Game 6 goals 1 bagful ratio 6.3
