Matt Doherty could start for Wolves

Wolves rookie right-back Matt Doherty has “every chance” of making his first Premier League start against Newcastle this Saturday.

Manager Mick McCarthy revealed that with Richard Stearman struggling with a badly bruised toe and Ronald Zubar only having made his comeback last night, 19-year-old Irishman is pencilled in to make his full top flight bow after coming off the bench at half-time in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Liverpool.

McCarthy said: “There’s every chance of him starting on Saturday. He wasn’t on the bench by accident – he’s one we thought could play there.

“I thought he had a good performance against Millwall as well. Zubar played 70 minutes last night but I’m not sure that will give him enough of a base to play Premier League football. We will see.

“Stearman has a badly bruised toe. We thought he might have got a crack in it, but he hasn’t so that’s the good news.

“But I’d say he’s a doubt for Newcastle. We’ll just see how it is. If he had a crack he’d would probably be out.

“It depends how it reacts to training.”
