It’s Anfield again for Stephen Ward
Friday 23rd September 2011, 4:00PM BST.
Wolves left-back Stephen Ward wants to be in the frame against Liverpool – with another picture to celebrate a golden moment at Anfield.
The 26-year-old readily confesses bagging last season’s winner over the Reds was his career highlight at club level.
And the moment he poked the ball past Pepe Reina last December is captured forever in a framed photo in the Ward household.
Scoring the winner as a boyhood Manchester United fan in a family of Liverpool supporters made it even more special.
Now Ward wants another momento.
He said: “I have the picture at home – someone sent it to the club for me so I’ve kept it.
“My dad Sean was there with my girlfriend’s father, so it was a good day all round. I’ve got a lot of family back home who are big Liverpool fans and they remember it as well.
“We’ve played quite well in the two games we’ve had there so hopefully we can repeat that.
“Winning six caps for the Republic of Ireland has been huge, but club-wise, it’s got to be the moment of my career and it will take a lot to beat it as well – especially as we won 1-0 and we were bottom of the league.
“I’ll cherish that. It was a massive day for me.”
The emotions experienced by Ward at Anfield last season were in stark contrast to his first game there 12 months earlier, when he was sent off for two bookable offences in a 2-0 defeat.
He said: “In two games there, I’ve played in two different positions and I’ve had two different outcomes, so if I’m picked, I’ll settle for a nice quiet afternoon with the right result!
“The first year I played was disappointing, not just because I got sent off but I still think I didn’t deserve to go – it really was quite harsh.
“But last season’s game was one of the highlights of my career – something I’ll never forget.”
Either way, tomorrow’s game will be another family occasion for Dubliner Ward.
He said: “My uncle Alan, my mother’s brother, who’s a massive Liverpool fan, is coming to the game tomorrow.
“The family were delighted last season – for 36 games they really care if Liverpool win – but I think the two games they play us are the only time of year they don’t care what happens in the game!
“First and foremost, we’ve got to get a positive result.”
Like last season, when Wolves won after being bottom of the table following a home defeat to Wigan, Mick McCarthy’s team need a positive result after back-to-back defeats.
Ward said: “Last season’s win came at a pivotal time for us. We were on quite a low, so to go there and win was fantastic.
“It’s not so much a tough place to go as a great place to go, because it’s somewhere everyone wants to play.”
But to achieve victory, Ward warms Wolves must be back to their snarling, in-your-face best that deserted them last week against QPR.
The players had meetings on Sunday and Monday and watched parts of the horror show against Rangers and know they have to be much better tomorrow.
Ward said: “In the Premier League, you’ve got to win the battle and that’s what we’ve always been good at.
“We’re probably one of the best teams in the league at closing sides down, getting into people’s faces and not allowing them to play their own game.
“We didn’t do that to QPR and let them off the hook conceding those two early goals.
“Against Liverpool, we’ve got to be right on it from the word go.”
