Adlene Guedioura eyeing Wolves place at Anfield
Thursday 22nd September 2011, 10:06AM BST.
Adlene Guedioura today vowed to be Wolves’ missing link at Anfield if boss Mick McCarthy changes his formation against Liverpool on Saturday.
Guedioura was man of the match in a five-man midfield in Tuesday’s 5-0 Carling Cup win over Millwall, scoring one and making one.
Steven Fletcher should be fit after a groin injury but McCarthy is looking into the possibility of playing one up front to try to stop the rot after successive Premier League defeats.
That would free up a slot in midfield and the Algeria international is one of several players who could play an advanced role behind Kevin Doyle, along with Jamie O’Hara, Dave Edwards, Nenad Milijas or any of the four wingers.
But Guedioura, who made his English debut against Liverpool in January 2010, has thrown his hat into the ring.
“It’s the gaffer’s job to decide how we play, but for me, I can play on the right or in the centre of midfield,” said the midfielder.
“I prefer central midfield but whether we play 4-5-1, 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, I’m not concerned about that – I’m happy playing in any formation.
“I was glad to get 90 minutes on Tuesday and I was really pleased that the gaffer allowed me to play the full game.”
Guedioura insists Wolves must kick on at Anfield after consecutive Premier League defeats to QPR and Tottenham.
“We enjoyed Tuesday night but from now we’re looking towards Liverpool because we must focus on that now,” he added.
“It will be a tough game and we have to change the pattern of our recent results because we’ve lost the last two Premier League games – we must get a draw or a win.
“We know Liverpool are a strong team and we’re working even harder in training to turn things around.
“We just have to be focused and concentrate on our jobs, and hopefully, we’ll have a positive outcome there. I’m working harder than ever this season and I won’t let my chance slip.
“I’m fully fit now but I have an extra motivation now as I try to make up for lost time.”
