Wolves trio in contention for Liverpool

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today insisted midfield trio Adlene Guedioura, Nenad Milijas and David Edwards are ready for the Premier League challenge at Liverpool.

Guedioura turned in a man of the match performance in last night’s 5-0 Carling Cup rout of Millwall, scoring a beauty and making one for George Elokobi.

Milijas got an impressive 90 minutes under his belt, while Edwards scored after three minutes on his comeback after eight-and-a-half months out with a back injury.

McCarthy is believed to be considering playing Kevin Doyle as a lone striker at Anfield on Saturday, which opens up a space for an extra midfielder, and the three last night all staked a claim.

The manager said: “It’s nice because we got Adlene, David and Nenad back out there and these players needed the game.

“Whether it’s for Saturday or not, I know these players are up to match speed and, if I need to call on them, I can.

“They all did themselves a huge service by playing as well as they did. They all closed down well and worked hard.

“It gave a few people the chance to play, which they needed.”

Many posts on here have aksed for a chance for Guedioura Millijas and now Edwards is fit why not? Doyle alone up front is reverting to the survival strategy from last season. It also invites Liverpool to come at us,therefore I think a quicker player, one to one, especially with Jamie Carragher, would pay dividends. Remember! the Scousers are hurting after last weeks debacle, they are at home, and someone has to pay. A quick prayer to Saint Peter Knowles here to ensure it isn’t us.

They might be ready but where will he play them, as he wont drop Henry for Adlene.

He will have to accommodate Henry as he is not willing to accept he was wrong in the shirt is his quotes.

The reason we had more forward movement last night is because of that, he can also score goals which we have seen before, and that’s what midfield players should be doing when an opportunity arises.

Leaving Doyle on his own up front is just more of the same as last season, he will be lucky to score a goal.

Is it just me that can see all the defensive work that KH does in a game? please for god sake look. when any one is caught out of position at the back who is there? when ever the ball breaks out side the box when we have a corner or are on the attack? if we drop KH for Guediora then we will be ripped apart! i do really like Guediora, he is a box to box midfielder with a fantastic strike on him but we need a holding midfielder playing with two wingers! i would like mick to play 4-5-1 on saturday with o’hara, KH and Guediora in the middle of which mick should have played this system against Q.P.R. 4-3-3 is the current trend in football and with good reason. A midfield trio of Guedioura, Milijas and O’Hara represents the best defensive and attacking option for us in that area. Up front we should go with Doyle, Fletcher and Hunt.

Milijas played defnsive midfield for Serbia and was their captain!

    Guedioura can pass/shoot/dribble and score!

You can’t tell me Henry isn’t our only ‘defensive midfield’ option adn is not as good a player as either of these two.

I’m sorry to single out an individual but others deserve a chance as he doesn’t offer enough going forward.

Guedioura and Milijas have to come in to our underperforming midfield.

Some of the remarks on here are bewildering! How anyone can suggest that by alienating Bothroyd, Eastwood or Van Damme for lack of ‘teamplayer’ attitudes, McCarthy did the club a disservice is totally beyond me. It’s because he insists on those attitudes that we have been successful in recent years! Millwall were no opposition last night, I don’t think all the Wolves players who had too much time and space last night are necessarily ready for Liverpool away. But a very enjoyable evening, where on earth were the rest of you? Rubbish support, hot and cold loyalty.

Will McCarthy do that, probably not judging by his comments about him.

But to be worth his place a huge improvement is needed, and stop getting caught up in petty squabbles.

The reason we are shipping goals is because he is not breaking up the attacks you talk about in midfield and having to chase back, foul the player and give free kicks away outside our box.

he was shocking against tottenham and villa!! we had one of the worst defensive records last season. He doesnt track the runners anymore – i used to like karl henry dont get me wrong but times up im afraid he isnt premiership standard. Mick knew this at the end of last year when he came out and said we needed a new CM and took captaincy off him. Karl Henry’s number one skill as a player was to pass backwards or sideways, he can’t even do that without losing the ball or putting a player under pressure. People on here saying his defensive work is second to none and a defensive ball winner, hes not doing that any more, hes simply not good enough at the minute and after 68 games for the wolves hes started 67 of them, which to me shows no matter what form he is in he will be played. I think he may have become complacent with his starting place and needs to be shown that his below average performances just arent acceptable. Swap him for Adlene and play Dave instead of Kightly much better link up with forward, instead of disjointed passing.

He wont drop Henry because A: he said there is no contender for his shirt! so making a change would make him look stupid (so not gonna happen)
and B: he will not drop him as this would then hand victory to Barton in the war of words!

Problem is the team is suffering from his stubborness!
After last weekend i would leave a few out just to give them a wake up call! they would be, henry, elokobi, ohara, doyle, kightly!

Far more important than the individual names mentioned in the article is the need to change the format to 4-5-1 for Saturdays game.

I will be amazed if the back four will be different to those that played so well in the first four Premiership games.

Assuming Fletcher is still not fit then Doyle will have to play the lone striker. The five in midfield should only, in my opinion, include just one winger. We can all pick and choose who those five should be. There are plenty of candidates.

Liverpool will be smarting after their 4-0 defeat at the hands of Spurs. It is not a game in which we should be too adventurous. A draw at Anfield is never a bad result.

Millijas far better than Henry who in my eyes is poor, did I already say that… O’hara and Johnson starting to look disinterested. Jarvis and Hennesy scared of the ball and physical contact and that does not seem to be going out of their game. The only player that Mick seems capable of improving is ‘son of’ Wardy! But to be fair to the gut he’s had to put up with constantly adjusting to different positions. Example. Last Saturday when all around us was collapsing (except Berra), at half time Ward was switched from a forward role back to his left back position and effectively stopped the onslaught that Big George couldn’t cope with during the first half.

I’d love to get to Molineux, but as I keep having to reiterate, I live in London, where the Rioja (ah, Rioja) is more plentiful and Mrs Pete keeps me occupied at weekends, and if you could only compare the relative merits of an afternoon in the Molineux stands, and Mrs Pete, you’d see that there ain’t no comparison to be made. But I’ll concede that you are rightish about Ward, he was superb in the first three games of the season, so I’ll amend my original postulation and, with great reluctance, let Wardy plough his left-back furrow a while longer and see if he can cement himself as Big George’s superior. Everybody is saying that Henry offers no goal threat. He had a terrific run and shot 1st half against Spurs (forcing a terrific save from Spurs keeper) and hit the post against QPR. I’m not saying he’s brilliant but he came nearer to scoring in both of the last 2 games than any other Wolves player.

Interesting a lot of posts refer to Hammil but MM never referred to him after last night’s game. You can only think that he’s got the wrong side of MM and, as others have found out, it’s hard to get back.

hennesey-o only player last week with a normal performance and why wouldnt mick play him?

    stearman-
people may disagree with performance last week but the week before got man of the match and absolutely outplayed bale which is something ashley cole couldnt do in the england game
    ward-
playing so well this season, has showed us why we didnt need to buy a left back as he has just been great another man of the match the other week
    johnson-
hope hes fit and captained the side well
    berra-
him and johnson have been working wonders together if you dont include last weeks game

    henry-
im sorry everyone might disagree but he does so much that fans arent intrested in everyones all for the big crosses which karl doesnt do but he is our holding midlfield player and gets all the awkward balls from o’hara, when hes surrounded by three players and dont really well with them but no-one notices this
    jarvis-
    again why not?
    hunt-
always puts in 100% same as ward
    milijas or guedioura-
i would drop o’hara, i dont think hes been playing well recently, yes he does great balls but he loses the ball to often and gives it away to easily, what can he do which those two cant?
    fletcher-
if fit, of course stick with the two upfront
    doyle-
why is everyone dropping him? him and fletch work wonders together

Has to be this team; Foley in for stearman as he’s just not good enough. Ward back to left back as Elokobi is too inconsistent. Five in the middle, 4-5-1 with O’Hara playing infront of Guedioura and Henry who will command the midfield and Hunt & Jarvis on the left and right with Doyle at centre forward putting in a shift. @ 62 Farmer Ted – I “SEE” what you’ve done there. Like it.

Personally, I think we have missed a trick in the summer not signing a new Karl Henry. First season I though he did really well to be honest but he has gone backwards ever since. And this from someone who doesnt like to get on any players back. If O Hara or Adelene could have the discipline to play the KH position then I would go with that. Personally, and unfortunately, I don’t think either has though.

Well everyone is talking about henry as if he is not a good player but lets get it straight, He’s a good holding player and has been a great servant to wolves but lacks any forward thinking, every time he gets the ball it goes sideways or back mostly sideways henry as I call him and at this point that’s not what we need, the likes Guedioura and Ohara are what is required, Milijas I’m still not sure if he is prem quality, he has played well in lesser games recently but cost us goals last season giving the ball away in bad positions under no preasure, that is why MM put him on then took him of again in the same game. As for going back to one up front I don’t think we need to get that drastic just yet.

The guy is just not good enough for this league. he never tackles anymore, passes back to the goalie or gives the ball away. He only covers his own mistakes.

Taking the others at face value, it seems he averages a goal just over every 4 games, but he actually scores from 63% of the shots he takes. That’s not a bad percentage and maybe, just maybe, at times he as sacrificed his own goal scoring by doing extra work outside the box to the benefit of the team as a whole.

Responce from my last post yesterday.
Nice to see that there are people out there that agree with me regarding KH not being left out. Lets put a few people straight, One person said he was rubbish at the villa, spurs and Q.P.R. To start with that’s the first time we have gone to the villa playing 4-4-2 and got anything out of the game, as i said yesterday you can’t play with 2 wingers without a holding midfielder. Against spurs we were the better side for an hour playing against a top side. Best chance in the game for us made by himself was by KH in the first half. Q.P.R. played on the Monday and Ripped Newcastle to shreds, god no’s how it stayed 0-0, they played 5 in the middle as they did against us. Mick should have gone 4-5-1 to stop them playing us off the park, that’s why KH and a few others looked poor against them. There was no balance to the side!
A few wrote about the things that KH doesn’t do his defensive duties that well for one, i must be watching a different player to some of you lot or is it i understand football a bit more! This guy does the boring side of the game very well, he’s not world class granted and yes he does make a few mistakes, but he is the best we have in that role, why can’t people see that? Guedioura to play along side henry on Saturday.
We have Sandwell town in 3 games time, so all you knockers stay away for the Newcastle game and let the true supporters get behind the gold shirt, to give us a chance of beating the albion!

KH No1 fan – I replied to you yesterday and agreed that he can play as well as you describe. But he didnt against QPR or Tottenham. I have to say that we wasnt by far the better team against Tottenham, it was an even match and I dont think either team edged it. As I said though, he was poor in the QPR match. You could forgive him not making a single challenge in the first half, if it was an even game, but considering they were camped in our own half, you would expect a defensive midfielder to make a challenge or two.

Just to point out that for their 3rd goal, Henry tracked back running into our own box, without even watching the ball. The ball broke to traore and Henry could easily have cut it out, but because he wasnt even watching the ball, he didnt even move. Baring in mind he was already in the box on his own, you would then think a defensive midfielder would be able to cut out a low pass to the front post, but it turns out he still fails to even move, and I think it was Stearman that ended up tracking back to try and cut out the cross but ultimately failed. For me, thats just poor play, and considering when Guedioura came on he immediately started doing the defensive things that Henry had failed to do, I personally think that Guedioura deserves a chance to play that role.

As i said KH in not a world beater, but i hate to see and hear it time after time players being slated when they don’t deserve it, remember how much we paid stoke for him, remember how far we have come from when mick took charge. peaople tend to for get that. yes there will be a time in the furture when we will need to replace KH but until then all i’ll say is if KH plays get behind him!
