Matt Doherty signs new Wolves deal
Wednesday 21st September 2011, 9:30AM BST.
Teenage Wolves prospect Matt Doherty was today celebrating a new contract after being signed up to 2014.
The 19-year-old has penned a new deal that keeps him at Molineux for the next two-and-three-quarter years.
Right-back Doherty cost a bargain £70,000 from Irish club Bohemians in July 2010 and played in last night’s Carling Cup third round thrashing of Millwall.
The new contract is reward for his growing impact which has left manager Mick McCarthy already comparing him to Kevin Foley.
McCarthy said: “Matt has just signed a new contract and I’m delighted with him. He was as good as anybody on the pitch last night at right-back.
“He was great and his use of the ball was as good as anybody’s. He reminds me a lot of Kevin Foley in the way he plays.
“He had another really solid and mature performance.”
Doherty has played three games for Wolves – all in the cups – and ideally is seeking Championship experience on loan to continue his education.
He said: “I guess it’s down to my agent to find a club to take me on loan! No one has come in for me yet. Maybe there was someone watching last night and I think the gaffer wants me to go out on loan now.
“I want to play every week so, if I could play in the Championship, I feel I would improve massively.”

Well Kevin Foley can’t even get in the team, so I’m sorry but I can’t get too excited about this guy if Mick is comparing him to Foley.

Forget goin on loan play him in the prem he was quality last night

Well done to the lad. From what I’ve read he seems to be one the better youngsters at the club. Surely there must be a Championship club in need of a promising right back who will be willing to take a chance of taking him on loan.

Don’t let him go. We farm too many players off on loan and like now when we have a number of injuries again we are left high and dry. With Foley and Zubar out why not give him his Premier League bow?

Pointless story!! He won’t ever get a chance, the same as our other youth and reserve team players.
Yet MM is always buying young hungry players!!
Guedioura will start against liverpool on the right, which will be stuipd as he can’t play on the right. So MM can yet again play Henry.
Barton was wrong Henry is not a sunday league player, he is not that good!
Another good performance from hammill, but he will never play for wolves again. I have heard him and ward had words during a pre-season training session!! Cross ward, you cross MM………..
Don’t get me wrong I was pleased with last night, I just wish he MM would try different things in the prem and not just the cup……..

He’s an excellent player.

1) Kevin Foley is injured alongside Johnson, Zubar, Craddock, SEB and Fletcher. Think before you spout!
A great performance from the lad. There should be a number of clubs looking at him, Gorman and Reckford, I would suggest. They need to be playing and not at reserve level. Look how Ikeme has been doing for Middlesbrough?
4-5-1 at Liverpool and based on last night I would like to see the following:-
Hennessey Stearman Berra Johnson Ward Hammill Guedioura Milijas O’Hara Hunt Doyle
I am assuming that Fletcher might be out? I reckon, however, Henry will keep his shirt at the expense of Guedioura, Jarvis instead of Hammill and you might see Edwards instead of Milijas. After last Saturday, nobody should take their shirt for granted!

didn’t realise we had a right back called Foley any more?
we used to have one back in the day – won player of the season too if my memory serves me right – now he was impressive at right back – wish we still had him!
the only Foley on our books now is that central mid-fielder guy who doesn’t get a look in cus we have Karl Henry as first pick every week.
still what do us numpties know about anything eh?

1 – Foley has an ankle injury…
But well done Matt, I look forward to seeing you develop and progress.

Well, I for one can not believe Rich Wolf64 won’t be getting excited about a positive Wolves story, it’s so out of character.

Welldone to Matt. Its good to see a young lad getting his chance.

Good result last night but it was against an average Championship side who are in a poor run of form at the moment.
I still feel that certain players deserve a run of games in our team, for me Stearman, Elokobi and Henry should be dropped for the game against Liverpool, my team would be:
……….Hennessey
Foley..Johnson..Berra..Ward
…..Guedioura…O’Hara
Hammill….Milijas….Hunt
……….Fletcher
SUBS: De Vries, Doherty, Craddock, Jarvis, Edwards, Doyle, Spray
If Foley and Fletch are not fit they should be replaced with Doherty and Doyle, it looks like Zubar isn’t going to make the weekend.
I doubt McCarthy will drop Henry and Stearman from the starting 11 let alone form the squad! It’s a shame really as all players deserve their chance, there should be no one who is untouchable in a team but its obvious Mick has his favourites.
We also have promising youngsters coming through our youth set up but the lack of academy players that have come through during McCarthy’s time in charge is worrying to say the least, let’s hope he gives lads like Spray, Doherty, Gorman and Ismail a fair chance to get into our first team!
UTW!

Well deserved, I have been impressed by him everytime he has played.

If Johnson and Craddock are still injured from Saturday Doherty could get in a right back. Certainly did nothing wrong last night he was excellent along with a number of the squad players.

Team for Saturday – 4 2 3 1 Hennessey; Foley/Doherty, Johnson, Berra, Ward; O’Hara, Milijas; Hammill, Guedioura, Hunt; Doyle. Subs: De Vries, Stearman, Edwards, Vokes, Jarvis, Kightly, Elokobi

1. Miserable as always, if you are unable to make a positive comment, please do not make a comment at all.
7. Spot on

Cant we just give them a chance and play them. Look at Man u, they play their youth players and they are worser than ours!!!

How astute you are. Your prejudiced views about one player means you write off another player you probably haven’t even seen ?
Breathtaking !
They’ll be pulling their IQs out at the roots down at your 1% club when they read that.
Keep ‘em coming Mr Mensa, you entertain us.

Good job he is a right back.
If he was a left back NO CHANCE he would have got a contract (tongue firmly in cheek).
Keep the lad around until Zubar is back – you never know when he may be needed especially as Kev Foley is picking up knocs now and again.

no.1 are you stupid?
