Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Wolves 0 Tottenham 2
Saturday 10th September 2011, 5:00PM BST.
Wolves finally lost their unbeaten start to the season after a late double blast from Tottenham.
Goals from debutant Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe punished a typically spirited performance from Wolves, who had been on top when Spurs broke away to score the first goal.
The goals completely knocked the wind out of Wolves’ sails and, even with substitutes Adam Hammill and Matt Jarvis on after the first goal, Mick McCarthy’s side found no way back.
Wolves had their best spell in the 15 minutes after the break, but failed to make their possession count, in terms of chances.
The home side’s best opportunity came in the 37th minute when Steven Fletcher couldn’t get enough on his header from point-blank range from Kightly’s cross.
But Spurs deserved their first victory of the season having forced the majority of the chances.
McCarthy made his first change of the season in the Premier League with Michael Kightly replacing Jarvis, who is carrying an ankle injury and was relegated to the bench.
Spurs made the better start and Defoe’s low shot was deflected wide off Roger Johnson, after debutant Scott Parker dispossessed Karl Henry 25 yards out.
Then Wolves’ hearts were in their mouths after a cross from Benoit Assou-Ekotto caused havoc in the ninth minute.
Spurs’ other debutant Adebayor fired over from point-blank range after goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey saved from Johnson, who had stretched out a leg to try to stop the cross, before Niko Kranjcar’s effort was deflected off the line by Richard Stearman.
Wolves recovered to force two chances of their own, first former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara stung the hands of Friedel from 25 yards, before Henry saw an angled left foot drive palmed away by Friedel after winning a tackle and bursting forward.
Kightly tried to break the deadlock with a floated back post header after climbing above Kyle Walker, but it lacked the power and direction trouble Friedel from Stephen Hunt’s deep cross.
Steven Fletcher then had the chance to extend his impressive scoring record against Spurs but couldn’t get enough on his header from Kightly’s swirling free kick and, instead of the ball ending up in the net, it was Fletcher and Johnson.
Johnson and Christophe Berra combined to force a powerful header goalwards from Kightly’s corner, but Luka Modric headed off the line.
Wolves had a scare as half-time approached – and it was completely through their own doing.
O’Hara was caught in possession 25 yards out and Defoe again was the beneficiary and, this time, his fierce low effort was tipped around the post by Hennessey.
Wolves gradually got closer to Spurs as the second-half progressed and O’Hara tried his luck with an angled volley from 30 yards, but it was too close to Friedel.
At the other end, a great sliding tackle by Henry stopped Defoe’s cross reaching Gareth Bale.
Kightly had the chance of glory on the hour but he couldn’t get high enough to get enough power on his header from Doyle’s cross.
Wolves were looking the dominant side and had built up a head of steam when Spurs scored.
But it was a goal any team would have been proud to score, as one-touch passing from Parker and Kranjcar set Adebayor free inside the box to round Hennessey.
Twelve minutes later it was 2-0 when Defoe finally got on the scoresheet, stabbing home from close range from Kranjcar’s cross.

Didn’t see the game today but looking at the report they did OK.
What does concern me though was reading the morning paper to see McCarthy stating:
”Spurs are a fabulous team and streets ahead of his team”
The paper went on to say ” we’re concerned about the negative message he’s sent out to his own players, just when the should be aiming for the stars.

We were bound to lose sometime, but there’s no shame in going down to a strong side like Tottenham!
QPR’s next – we should be able to get 3 points out of that! :)

Oh dear the bubbles burst, sign you’ve played a good team instead of half a Blackburn side, a tired fulham and poor villa.

A game of two halves, everything that was good of the new season we saw in the first half, where we should have made our play count, we had two to three opportunities. O Hara was again the driving force of the team, and we stopped Spurs from playing, it was good to see Kightly back, and the defence was superb in it’s tackling and shape, again Johnson making such a difference, and Henry making a superb run and shot.
Second half we reverted to the same as last season, O Hara faded and so did the team, no ideas were apparent.
The game was again lost by McCarthy not changing the team on 60 mins, Hunt and Kightly were clearly struggling, Hunt should have been replaced at the end of the half, and a change was required, but he again waited until we were two down.
As I said before the season started we need a goal scorer, Vokes is not the answer, we didn’t sign one in the window, hopefully SEB will be fit and should start a head of Doyle or Fletcher.
Can someone please tell me what Henry was doing in the second half, he reverted to his normal game and lost so much possession that caused us so much trouble and playing the ball to marked players.
If he is the first name on the sheet, then someone needs to rub it out.
A game and three points that were there for the taking, very disappointing and we saw the confidence drain from the team, felt for the fans in the open stand.

Can someone tell me please why does “milijias” not getting a run out?

HAS THE BUBBLE BURST? Three matches undefeated and then come Spurs. Does it matter whether we played well or not, the fact is that we didn’t get a point and all the worries that most Wolves fans have commented on in the last few weeks are coming to the fore. The 3M’s blinded us all by not adding to the team at the end of the transfer season by believing that 7 points from three games was a sign that things would only get better. The fact is that with only Jarvis sitting on the bench we had our strongest line-up. McCarthy has spent the last few days mouthing off about everything that has nothing to do with Wolves, ie. the problems at Spurs, the weather forecast, the beer that a certain Italian footballer drinks and the Zillions that someone wants to pay for Mr. X who plays for Wolves. In hindsight it may have been better for Wolves to have lost their first three matches then perhaps we may have convinced tight a**e Moxley to buy or at least loan a couple of Premier League players to supplement the squad. I hope that I’m wrong but the next match against QPR at home may add more evidence to my convictions. Finally, not counting O’Hara how can one new first team player make a real improvement to the three minutes of oxygen that was left at the end of last season.

Ah well never mind-you will soon find your true level :)

Once again it is obvious we need a “fox in the box” who posseses a turn of speed and some guile to accompany either Doyle or Fletch. As a pair they don’t gell.

I’m pretty sure a loss to a very strong Tottenham side, where the match was relatively even does not constitute as the bubble bursting. Lets face it, every player in the tottenham team could walk into most premier league clubs. In fact im pretty sure every spurs player playing today would walk into our team, with the exception of maybe Friedel, although, even he would without doubt push Henners all the way for a starting role.
Spurs are a quality team who at there best will beat any team outside the top 5. Losing to them is no shame, and the loss was going to come eventually anyway. I think we do need to be looking for a win against qpr even though we are away, as Liverpool will probably also be a very tough test to get anything again.
If we win the matches against the teams around us, we will survive comfortably. Spurs arent one of those teams, but I still feel we have shown a real improvement with our performance. The defence in particular played very well again, only to be undone by some real quality football.
It seems to me that the same old problems will rise again this season, Moxey is more concerned with saving money than building a premiorship club and we are managed by a championship manager and coach. I agree with 6
where is milijias?

In all fairness we have had a difficult set of opening fixtures. I still think we’ve made a very bad misjudgement though in not adding to the squad in the window, particularly defensively. Realistically another survival scrap beckons!!

POP!
Poor performance today from us against a winless spurs. Johnson is suspect against forwards who play it on the floor at pace and so it looked today.
Wonder what excuses Mick will think of. We were hopelessly outclassed and just huffed and puffed our way through the game. No creativity whatsoever, back to the dross of last season.
Oh dear just got back my own opinion 2 poor premier teams. Little creativety from Wolves, Henry rubbish although he did manage to crate chances for Spurs when giving ball away. Kightly way off the pace should never have started what has Hammill done wrong? and surely if Jarvis on bench he is good enough to start??. Get your thinking cap on MM To late in transfer market but please change it round a bit Berra not good enough as per Henry, Stearman, Kightly.

Excellent performance in general but Henry & O’Hara keep giving the ball away. Despeartely need a midfielder who can pass the ball. Milijas is the man but Mad Mick won’t play him.

Mick, you sure know how to make the players and fans feel better. Your comments on the BBC stating that Spurs are a better team and have better players. I’d like to see your wife’s reaction if you told her that a bird up the road was better looking and better in bed. I think the reply would be that her frying pan would be buried halfway between you ears or if she had any sence then the next time you wanted to go to the toilet for a number one you would have to sit down like the better half of the human race.

cant believe some of the rubbish on here,..we lost to a Spurs side full of class players,..who will no doubt finish top 6 again,..we weathered the early storm and grew into the game, but the final ball/finish wasnt good enough. I also agree that Fletcher & Doyle dont seem to work as a strike pair.
My only complaint really today was for 5-10 mins before they scored Hunt was exhausted and I believe if we had changed it a bit earlier we mat not have conceded the 1st goal,…
But if we can beat QPR, which wont be easy, as they have spent well and we will find it harder to get motivated, I think 10 point from 5 games is a great return

We lost to a good side..A side who can trouble most in this league..Modric,Bale these are what people all over the world call “CLASS” players.Defoe a small man in stature yet a born goalscorer…Lazy daizy Adebayor another proven goalscorer..We have “DOYLE” who as less shots than “DEFOE’s”goals!in a season.Henry who passes the ball back most of the time and when he does put in a forward pass it’s generally to the opposition.
Kite’s is a very good player but he was well off the pace not his fault it’s the “DUMMYS” fault who manages are great club!
He says “spurs” are miles ahead of us,ok fair comment,so does that not even back the fact that we needed a few additions!!If “SPURS” are so far ahead they are only going to be fighting for a position between 5th–10th! Yet MM reckons we will finish in top ten!
So looks like he is the original “NUMPTY”!!
Why else would a manager leave “MILIJIAS” on the bench…A player who can pass, who can shoot and even was putting in the shifts last season.!
I never got carried away with our start and will not go over board with this defeat.
I would “LOVE” to see “MM” giving a fair crack of the whip to players like “Hamill,Milijias,Adlene,SEB”!Seb in my opinion as just not been given the oppurtunity and surely “DOYLE” deserves to be dropped Just look at his “STATS”………for the last “FOURTY” games…..

i knew the curse of opposition debutants against Wolves would rear it’s head but thought parker would do the damage. the result shows the blinkered transfer policy of the three m’s as we are still too weak in alot of areas. one thing, how jammy are Stoke and how do they keep getting away with it. a BIG thank you for the kind words and intelligent musings from that rabble down the road. lets hope Norwich shut them upfor a while.

The first goal decided the game after that we seemed to lose heart and Spurs played keep ball after the second. On the positive side there were some immense performances from our back line. Has Stearman played better than that ? Berra continues to defy all his critics this season and Wardy hardly put a foot wrong.
Henry didn’t play so well, he made that early mistake which got the numpties leaping about, but, don’t lose sight of the number of attacks he shut out in and around the ‘D’.
O’Hara tries too many Hollywood balls and we lose possession. Kightly isn’t ready. Loan him to Notts Forest ’til Jan, Mick, and get McFadden in.
Some are asking for Milijas. Okay, maybe it’s a chance to take, but, he’d let us down so many times in the past.
Hate losing, but,I felt quite positive having watched the first 60/70 minutes of that and ‘supporters’ like 4 halfBaked we don’t need.
They have better players than us, it’s no disgrace.

One loss and people are saying a survival scrap!! I think mick missed a trick by not going 4-5-1 in the second half to beef up the mid field, also I would have preferred Hammill to Kightly, I dont think he does it training.

Oh well, Class told in the end, never mind though, we all knew a defeat was coming sooner or later. Now that we’ve got it out of the way, perhaps the players and Moxey can get their heads out of the clouds and get down to the proper business, SURVIVAL! QPR next up are not going to be the easy 3 points some in here seem to think. They made some excellent signings at the end of the transfer Window,so we will have to work very hard to get anything out of the game. It might also help if MM talks up our team instead of the opposition this time!

15 – jenninpm… I was obviously at a different game. I thought Berra and Stearman played well, overall.
However, Henry was off form and, in all fairness, I don’t think Kightly is Premiership quality.
Today we played well in the 1st half. We maybe should have gone in at half time in the lead.
The 2nd half was a disaster. Accepting the players we played against were, generally, world class, we had no drive and were sterile and impotent. Our midfield was wanting and crying out for creativity. Why won’t MM give Milijas a chance, even if it’s for 20 minutes with nothing to lose?
I think it said it all when our 4th choice striker was put on in place of Fletcher, unless, of course, Fletcher was injured (no reports of such, yet).

Just had that extra bit of quality, perhaps 451 with milijas might have worked better. Great to see Kites start, just wonder if this might show why we should have brought in 1 if not 2 more players. Reo Coker, Hitzlesperger where both on free so its not even that we had to chuck money at it. Still we are sitting ok and 3 points is a must against a much strengthened QPR. As there was no bubble in the first place, there should be no talk about it having burst. Let’s face it, we’re only four games into the season and nothing means that much for the time being. Of our first five games a victory over QPR is essential, that’s going to be the real marker that defines the difference between us and our fellow strugglers this season. I believe it’s safe to say Albion and Blackburn will nestle in the bottom spot for a good while but don’t underestimate our Woys powers of inspiration. That leaves us, Rangers, Swansea and Norwich to argue the toss for two places Championship wise. Personally, I think we’ll make it (17th again) but not because we did well in the transfer market, more because two other sides plus Blackburn will not be up to it.

Good performance 1st half- maybe even sneaked it.
Spurs started to dominate after about 60mins- no surprise when they scored.
Thought Kyle Walker, their RB ,ex-Villa loanee, England U21 marshalled Hunt and then Jarvis very well and got up RW when he could- strong and fast- my MOM.
Henry needs to improve his ball control- all fans felt nervous when he received ball in tight spot.
In truth,I feel a lot of fans would like somebody else in midfield- to be able to see short pass to Fletch and Doyle, akin to Scotty Parker today who , on his debut, fitted in well.
O’Hara likes 30-40 yard passes rather than short ones.
Think of Barcelona- how many long passes do they make.
No disgrace to lose to Spurs though after drawing to them at home last season despite defoes 2 wonder goals can understand some degree of disappointment.
More revealing how we do against QPR.
When youve got a manager like ours, who constantly puts his own team under pressure by saying how good the opposition are !! its know wonder they play like rabbits in the headlights.
That said Henry once again apart from one charge and a good strike at goal was rubbish. Two good games followed by two bad. back too last seasons rubbish from him. Hunt looked done in well before half time. Again doyle and fletch offered very little up front.
As much as i want & hope we have a good season (mid table) all i can see is bottom 5.
QPR home will be the test with all there new prem players,I wonder how much mm will build them up this week.

The first half was entertaining and essentially even. We played some decent open football without really delivering a telling blow. After 60minutes the game really turned strongly in their favor and they punished us with two quality stories. Adebyour totally tormented us after that and we failed miserably to get the ball off of him.
Without reinforcements at the next transfer window we will fall below mid table and flirt with the bottom three. We need a striker that delivers a finish and our central midfield needs help. OHara was too wayward with his passing today and Henry struggles with real pressure which invites trouble for our back four.
A win against QPR is really important if we are not to slide and have a confidence crisis.
Come on you Wolves!!!

Too much negativity from some ‘fans’ aleady after 1st season defeat to Spurs who, since defeats to Man U(minus Modric who they held to HT ) and Man City, have added Scotty Parker(current England player) and Adebayor(ex-Arsenal and Real Madrid).
If we get 4 points from next 2 home matches vs QPR and Swansea, this result will be forgotten.
Anything less may then be a cause for concern.
Just asking for a sense of perspective.

Agree with most above but not all. There was some spirited play today and some really good signs but as I posted the other week we seem to be a bit slow on the counter. O’Hara is an amazing player for us but at times you could se his frustration as no one was moving. Too many times the ball was lost and given away by you know who! We do not have the fluidity and sharp passing like Spurs did, it ain’t rocket science! As for our strike force, well! Is it because they ain’t gettin the service or the style of play! The same pattern emerges from the top corridor, Tight wad Moxey strikes again! This man needs rooting out, I don’t think he shares the same ambition as the rest of us. Okay we are not in debt but a couple of decent quality loan signings would have raised our chances. Spurs weren’t brilliant yesterday but after the first goal which was text book we seemed to flop and lack ideas. We should not feel too bad at losing to them but we should have at least had a draw! If we do not get aresult against QPR, then once again it will be the same as last season. Mcarthy seemed frustrated and him praising spurs quality players seems he might be a bit p….d off not being able to bring in quality, ossibly being restrained by The fat Controller!
Onwards and upwards Wolves!

Urgent…Urgent…We are desperate for another striker, and make it soon.
After watching Wolves yesterday with the exception of Fletcher, the rest of the forward line did not play as a team and were tame in front of goal. Lets face it Doyle is not and never has been the answer, and while he has some skills, does not fit in at Wolves, which is why many are saying he will be on his way soon.
Its clear that Fletcher and Doyle are not the perfect combination, and apart from Jarvis, the rest are sadly out of touch.
1. Hunt…Runs all day, not consistant
2. O’hara..over rated, has shown little to date
3. Kitley..Not and never will be a Premiership player
4. Ebanks..Not a Premiership player
5. Volkes..Below standard..
Another striker that can play along side Fletcher is essential, and not, repeat not, James McFadden…Lets get really serious Wolves and spend a little more to get the right man

No surprise here – 7 points gained from sides who show’d no fight. We are destined for the bottom 6 as usual. I actually think MMcC is arrogant appearing to make it look like we can cope with only buying Johnson. I doubt that we are even as good as the three new teams. Just remember that Mick was responsible for us LOSING that last must-at-least-draw game last season – we’re only in the Prem thanks to Brum . . .

This was a pretty open game. Maybe too open. With Jarvis not fit enough, I was surprised that Kightly was selected to play instead of Foley or perhaps Hammill.
For the first hour or so I thought it was fairly even, and either side could have scored. But after Spurs scored the first goal they took control of the game and there was only going to be one result.
Dissappointed but not downhearted. There were some really good performances which shows the spirit in the side. Stearmans clearance off the line was a fantastic piece of defending.

Just what match were you at? That first half was excellant, how can you say two poor Premiership teams?
Also, Berra didn’t put a foot wrong and Stearman had a superb game. I suggest you view matches at Molineux a little more objectively.
Two key moments in the match, for me. Firstly Friedel’s save from Henry, which would have altered the game completely if Wolves had gone one up, and Adebayor’s goal after which Wolves seemed to wave the white flag, which was disappointing.
I thought we played a lot better than we did at Villa Park.

Like I said last week Spurs have ‘historically’ always been a boggie side for us. I don’t mean the last few years look back further. Always nicking the game. We played well for the vast majority of the match but were undone by quality finishing, Spurs will finish in the top six.

Surely Wolves have their priorities about face after alll who wants a poor team and a beautiful stadium? – only Jex Moxley. MM’s hands are no doubt tied otherwise someone surely would have been brought in to help Johnson in defence. Our right back is an apology for a premiership player what’s Foley done wrong?
I’m afraid its going to be the last two seasons all over again unless help is sought and all this talk about a new stadium taking shape will count for nothing if we are back in the championship.
Why could our arrogant manager not see what was so obvious, Hunt and Kietly had run out of steam, Henry is not a premiership players despite MM saying he’s first on the teamn sheet. O’hara ran out of steam because he has no one to lay the ball off too in mid-field, when he gives it to HENRY he gives it back to him or wastes the ball by being caught in possesion or passing it backwards.
Will MM come out and tell the fans why he will not play Milijas?
Does he also think that Stearman is better than Foley no way. The ingma Ward is playing better but he is not a full back both goals came down the right flank he was out of position! each time.
I still think we need a manager who is not so arrogant and blinkered.

As I posted last season, I don’t know why Doyle is so liked by the fans. It took him 3/4 of last season to get into double figures of goals. He is not worth the £6.5 million paid for him. If Juventus wanted him, I would have taken the money.
This season, make a mental note of how many goals he scores and how long it takes him. He is about as useful to us as Torres is to Chelsea. Like Torres, he would be better off on the subs bench because he is no use in front of goal.
I hope our defeat yesterday isn’t the start of the long fall back into the relegation zone. The constant passing to opposition and no goal threat up front. The signs are worrying.

@ 48 – Don’t you think our players know the score with reference to their abilities compared with those of players in the top six teams? I mean, get real for goodness sake. Mick isn’t going to have any effect on their morale making truthful comments that we know underline the reality of our situation. The players would agree with him. Mick isn’t saying we might not win the game – we very well might, just as we got some great results last season. Over at Stoke, Pulis said exactly the same comparing Stoke with Liverpool – he said they were years behind them. Then the Potters beat them. But they are still years behind them. Hey, we were never going to win every game. Let’s be positive. Another win and we will have ten points – and it might be before October!!

the rot started 2nd half against villa,a noticable lack of confidence and it looks firmly in place now.henry wow i think i could cope with premiership pace better than him, back to the same old stuff, henry unfortunately is not good enough, maybe we are waiting for adlene who can do that job but with pace and a eye for a pass, our forwards are too deep, come on mick we cant have 11 defenders on the pitch

Well, where do I start. Have been a Wolves fan for 55 years, had a season ticket for 13 years (1990-2003)been to the odd games since then but this was the first since the last game of the season against Doncaster in the Championship. How little has changed!! I admit the team is better & the football has improved since then but the outcome is still very much the same. Still nobody from midfield prepared to run at the defence, still no-one able to pick out a run from a fellow player, still no-one who can thread a ball through the defence for someone to run onto. First touch is generally not good enough & we still lump the ball upfield to Doyle, Hunt or Jarvis who are 3 of the smaller players at the club.Defence played well, Berra & Stearmen have both improved. O’Hara needs someone to play shorter passes to, Milijas would be better than Henry. Kightly isn’t fit yet but hopefully will get back to how he played 3 seasons ago. I agree with other posters that Fletcher & Doyle don’t seem to complement one another up front. It all boils down to the same problems at the club since Moxey came, trying to do it on the cheap!! That’s why I gave up coming to games at the end of the 2003/4 season. Good luck in the future to WWFC.

Sir Billy Quiet ref your negativity we dont need fans like you. It is McCarthy’s negativity that is the problem we get agood start then whether you like it or not we HAVE reverteted to type, back to last seasons style. Last year wolves approached the spurs game by attacking them and were unlucky not to win the game. I am sorry but in my opinion this was not a great spurs side they had not got a point and if put under a lot of pressure would have cracked but as usual wolves confidence was undermined by the negative attitude of the manager. O hara and Hunt play at a very high tempo game but run out of steam after 60 minutes the manager does not react quick enough to this and very rarely makes atacking substitutions unless the game is lost.

Looks to me like you’re getting things the right way round this year: saving the better performances for the 6 pointers thus winning the games you should (Blackburn, Fulham etc).
No point beating a Spurs if you lose to a QPR…

Looked light in midfield second half.
O Hara let parker run off him for the first goal, second goal was it Berra who slipped.Thought MM could have changed it after half time, you could see the way it was going to pan out.Did well enough first half so that was pleasing.I think we will compete this year.

The difference at the end, graft versus quality.

Great performance first half but we lost it by poor central defending on two occasions our guys were too slow. Perhaps Mick should consider putting Foley back in at right back and put Stearman in the middle of defence with Johnson. In his interview after Mick says they were two poor defensive errors so it’s pretty easy to see who was at fault.

I dont normally post on sites such as this however on viewing some of the comments made by supposed wolves fans(Obviously some are albion, blues etc with nothing better to do however I know some are true as I sit next to one each matchday) I felt the need to vent my frustration. Not with the Wolves players who in my opinion again performed well against a team which will be top 6 pushing top 4 but with the negative comments following one loss. This is easily the best wolves team I have had the pleasure to watch at the Molineux and although I agree there is still room for improvement (ie henry, ward) one loss against a good team is certainly not the end of the world. Now can we all please get rid of the negative nonsense and help the team push on into a solid mid table finish which I for one believe we can achieve. UTW

3rdseasontheendisnigh – Name a manger who doesnt compliment the opposition? Fergie does it every game, even though his team is obviously expected to win, he will still declare that teams that obviously dont stand a chance play amazing football and will be a very difficult test. What exactly do you expect Mick to say, Spurs have a horrible group of players and we are 10 times better than they are? Hes obviously just stating the obvious, and in the end, even though the game was very even, the final result reflected the quality that Mick was refering to.
I hope for our sake he builds QPR up allot, as we sure dont want our players underestimating them.

The pictures of the new stand are encouraging. How/when are they going to sort out the corners that will need filling in?
The £16m the stand represents (plus any contingencies) is just part of a £60m project (plus contingencies, inflation etc) which suggests strengthening the playing side of the business will be very difficult for the next few years.
I’m all for prudence, but prudence has to be a factor in ALL areas of activity, and as the playing side of the business very much dictates the level of funding available, it might be prudent to ensure it becomes THE priority. A year or two delay in a capital project is, I would suggest, preferable to relegation, loss of the best players and an uncertain period once more in the Championship, with massively reduced income flows.
The game was lost in midfield, which is pretty obvious when you consider the quality of Modric and Parker.Henry gave them far too much space in the build up to the critical first goal.If he was running out of steam ,Mick should have brought on Foley.Biggest disappointment to me,was how little our strikers troubled their central defenders. They could have brought out a deckchair for Ledley King in the last 10 minutes,it was that easy for him.Time to feed some of them raw meat,Mick.

#79 I think you need to learn all about the history of your city before you cast aspersions. please see below;
STAFFORDSHIRE.
The largest city in Staffordshire is Stoke-on-Trent, which is administered separately from the rest of the county as an independent unitary authority. Lichfield also has city status, although this is a considerably smaller cathedral city. Major towns include Stafford (the county town), Burton upon Trent, Cannock, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Tamworth. Wolverhampton and Walsall were also in Staffordshire until local government reorganisation in 1974, but are now within the West Midlands county.
so please remember you are an adopted son of the Great Black Country.

We got undone by two clinical goals,by two Top Strikers. When you compare our two cost us around £13.5m, and there’s would cost you around £25m-£35m between them, thats what you get off them, top finishing when it matters. Otherwise i thought we competed with them for most of the match. As Cornish Wolf/Solentwolves stated in the week, Tottenham have always had the upper hand over us as long as ive watched Wolves over the years, not the last season or so. We all know that we will lose matches during the season, we cant always beat the top six clubs every season, its about getting enough points by the end of it to keep us in the BPL. If we can maintain our present form and win a couple and draw/lose the odd game we will have a decent season ahead. I said at the start finishing between 10th-15th, will be a good season for us. Then next season we must do what Stoke have done and invest more money in 3-4 more top BPL players. UTW:

Well said 45 Ron’s Flowers. And Sir Billy up to your usual negativity. When will you allow people the right to voice their opinions. Your trouble pal is you like to hear only what you want to. God help yer missus if you’ve got one.
Henry and O’Hara were culpable in defence, giving it away far too often. Strikers (ours) hardly looked hungry and Kightly is far too short of match fitness.
Spurs were a poor side in the first half and for most of the second. They were classier at times and we can be too, so MM was right in the after match interview when he said “there wasn’t much between us” But that counts for nothing. As the home team we should have torn into them. We were a pale shadow of the side we could have been had we been hungrier, if this is MM’s byline, it ain’t working!!
Foley and Milijas next week Mick and get a goal scorer please. Doyle just isn’t doing it. We need a twenty a season man to partner Fletcher. Sell Doyle ASAP and use the cash for someone who really does know where the net is. We aren’t in too bad a shape but we absolutely have to dump QPR. AMEN

Some of the comments make me despair. Stearman (OK I felt height was not a good enough reason to pick him over Foley) was excellent. Berra slipped for Defoe goal but had a good game. How anyone can criticise Doyle (presumably those who think we should play Milijas would drop him??) is beyond me. There are people who are accusing Kightly (Kieghtly, Kitely, Kiteley?? – it’s not that hard to spell) for being rusty – after virtually 2 years out.
Above all Wanderer in Eire – how “LONG” did your “I never say anything negative’ last?

We simply cannot play Milijas in central midfield with O’Hara? We would get hammered.
We need a midfield in the mold of Scott Parker? Someone who wins the ball back, retains possession, whether passing sideways or backwards. Someone who fills in at the back when we over commit and lose possession.
STEP FORWARD Karl Henry.
Will you all get off his back, he does a superb job for the team.
Thank god MM isn’t as stupid as you lot and he recognises the job he does for the team.

79.”How long has Wolverhampton been in Staffordshire?”
The answer is nearly 1,000 years you ignoramus! Wolverhampton was forced to join up with those folk from Brumijam who spake funny about 30 years ago by London based civil servants who created the West Midlands as a new county, without any respect for our Staffordshire heritage.
At wartime our lads joined the South Staffs regiment and fought and died together, the regiment was based at Lichfield.
Staffordshire went as far as Kingswinford, but Dudley was totally surrounded by Staffs and was part of Worcestershire. I went to watch Worcestershire play cricket at Dudley many times as a boy. Not as good as watching the Wolves, but better than nothing in the close season!
The Stokies always joined the North Staffs regiment, but we let them fight alongside us when it suited! The Staffordshire Regiments had a proud tradition.

Unfortunately I couldn’t make the match, was out of the area at a wedding.

I mean, what is the matter with you???
Have you lot never suffered being Wolves fans???
You new age footy fans drive me to distraction, you never look at the opposition & consider our performance, all you are bothered about is whether we win or not, astounding!!!!!
Yesterday we played against a player, who, Spurs turned down a £40m bid for & a player who they hold in much higher value in Bale.
A reality check is needed boys & girls & I dont even need to go back to the good old days of the 4th division, just think back to a few years ago when we were plying our trade under messers Hoddle, Ward & the hideous MARK McGEE!!!!
For gods sake shut up & enjoy the ride.

Alot of positives for me, and one or two mistakes that we can iron out.
There are some very talented players at Spurs these days and after their two hammerings by the Mancs, i did not expect Wolves to get much.
QPR will feel the full force of Wolves next week.
Stearman was unlucky to slip for the second goal, however he wore his heart on his badge, worked hard, tried to play every ball and led by example. Wolves MoM for me.

Was always going to be difficult for us once Robbie had been shipped out to graze in the States.
So we are now 2 points better off than we were last season comparing the results against the teams that we have played. Not bad – but it’s fair to say that getting 12 points from Man U, Man C, Chelsea and Liverpool will be hard to repeat this season.
I think our mini-league consists of 11 teams this season – we’ve played two and got maximum points so wearing my rose-tinted glasses, we’re doing okay so far.
Our remaining home matches in 2011 are against QPR, Newcastle, Swansea, Wigan, Sunderland, Stoke and Norwich. Results in these games will define our season and whether we can reach mid-table safety or whether we’ll be dragged into a relegation battle again.

For two-thirds of this game there was very little to choose between the teams – in fact Friedel had been the busier of the two keepers. It became clear that whoever scored first would win and it was Spurs from a touch of class from a £170,000 a week striker. Let’s be positive – We’re playing good football, look solid in defence and next week Doyle won’t be running on a half empty tank.

Beaten by a class outfit but could have had a draw if we had a manager that can see what 25000 see.Leading up to the goal the 2 midfielders were tired and needed help. we went into the season knowing that Edwards and Guedioura would be out for ages but did nothing to cover.Who would argue that we might not have got the draw if instead of replacing 2 wingers with 2 wingers that instead sent on someone like Mark Davies, David Davis or even Halford to give some central support let alone a Bowyer who could have helped fill our unused squad shirt !
Overall, a disappointing result considering that Wolves were Spurs equals for the greater part of the game. However, quality counts at this level, and the first goal scored was always going to decide the points. This was a much-changed Tottenham team to what went before and anyone who thought Wolves were ‘favourites’ to win -even though we were at home- really should stop smoking pot, chaps. I said last week that Spurs would be tough nuts to crack, and so it proved. After just 2 years in the Prem, Wolves can hardly be viewed as rubbing shoulders with Spurs so why should this loss be seen as anything other than par for the course where the Prem’s concerned?
On the plus side, we won’t play classy opposition like this every week. Secondly, Wardy is slowly winning my respect these days. The lad’s unrecognisable from the questionable player that I knew not so long ago. So, much credit to you, Stephen. Thirdly, it’s obvious that 2 seasons at this level has improved the team as a whole. When (some) fans get angry about defeat to Spurs, that says a lot about the club’s progress, I’d say. However, expectations need to be kept in check -Wolves are far from the finished article and are merely a work in progress (much like the stadium).
Like many fans, I’m still a bit annoyed that Wolves didn’t make another addition or two to the squad because we all know that we need better quality in certain areas. All the same, keep getting behind the lads every game, right from the first whistle. The lads deserve it because these boys wear the Gold & Black with pride, effort and distinction -and that’s not something we’ve always been able to say in years past!
A mid-table finish will do me nicely because I’m realistic. It’s highly achievable, so let’s do it. Roll on QPR….and remember to get your feet back on the ground, people.
UP THE WOLVES.

24 – wanderer in eire – Spurs will be competing for a european spot, we wont. The difference between the european placed teams and the rest of the league is a huge gap, it may as well be a completely different league, so I think its fair to say that Mick was right when he said spurs were miles ahead of us. It doesnt take a genius to compare Spurs team with ours and see a huge difference in class.
I do agree with you about Milijas. I feel he deserves a shot, and who’s to say that O’hara and Milijas wont work. When Henry was out last season, Milijas forged a decent partnership with Jones, and i personally dont think Jones is as hard a worker as O’hara. We all know that on his day Milijas can be a class act, I do hope he gets a chance at some point and earns a regular place. Although i feel Mick has been right not to give him a regular role so far as he hasnt been consistant enough.

No midfield, no pace anywhere in team, and be honest, Spurs were very poor too. Doyle is great at holding the ball up ..but for who? where are the midfield runners. Defence is looking better than last year, but dear me, that midfield , it’s so alow, and Hunt gave Walker a 15 yeard start twice on Saturday, and lost out both times.Get Milijas back in, and play teh strokers where they are effective, in the box, NOT down teh flanks. I can’t see why some people on here are still moaning. Last season people wanted us to beat the teams around us not teams like Spurs. We did that beating Blackburn, Fulham and a point at Villa. Spurs are a very strong team and we played well for 60 minutes. I felt that the only one who let us down on Saturday was Karl Henry. He is a decent defensive midfielder at times but all he seems to do is stop us from attacking. The major difference was they are the more experienced Premier League side and will take the chances more often then we do when.
We were going to lose at some point, we are not a team that can go 18/19 unbeaten, and I would rather have lost to a team like Spurs than lose against QPR next week.
