Christophe Berra hails Roger Johnson

Tuesday 30th August 2011, 2:00PM BST.

The impact of Roger Johnson at Wolves appears to go beyond the new captain’s individual contribution to Mick McCarthy’s team.

Equally important is the effect Johnson has had on the men around him – and no one has thrived more obviously than fellow centre-back Christophe Berra.

This has been easily Berra’s most impressive start to a campaign since the Scotland international’s arrival in early 2009, eagerly seizing the first opportunity to forge a partnership with the ex-Blues defender.

Successive clean sheets against Fulham and Aston Villa have encouraged the view that Wolves have put behind them some of the frailties that so damaged their campaign last season.

And Berra, relishing the opportunity afforded by manager Mick McCarthy, is equally keen to point out that his own contribution is still some way off reaching “prime” levels.

The 26-year-old said: “I’ve played with a few different centre-halves since I’ve been here and it’s always good. I am still only 26 and not in my prime and am just looking to improve every game.

“With picking up experience I can only get better and, as a team, we just want to keep on keeping clean sheets.

“We’ve seen Roger play for the last two seasons with Birmingham and have seen the leadership that he has.

“Hopefully we can keep the partnership going, but we know that if performances drop there are other players on the sidelines waiting to come in.”
