Mick: I made the right call
Monday 29th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today insisted he made the right call as he defended taking both wingers off at Villa.
McCarthy’s decision to replace Stephen Hunt and Matt Jarvis shortly after the hour mark, even though Wolves were heavily under the cosh, sparked some jeers in Saturday’s 0-0 Premier League stalemate.
The changes saw Kevin Foley offer more protection to Richard Stearman as he battled against Gabby Agbonlahor and George Elokobi help shore up the left with man of the match Stephen Ward pushed on.
And McCarthy maintained bringing on the pair had to be done to prevent defeat.
“I took the sting out of it by bringing on the substitutes,” said the boss.
“We were getting pumped for 10-15 minutes and if I’d left it, they probably would have won because they had the momentum.
“I’ll get the usual numpties who think they were negative substitutions.
“But I was happy with the point and I don’t give a damn what people think.”
