Karl Henry’s back to best form – McCarthy
Friday 26th August 2011, 12:30PM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today declared midfield enforcer Karl Henry is in the form of his life.
McCarthy believes Henry has become arguably the team’s most valuable player since losing the captaincy to Roger Johnson in pre-season as he bids to continue Wolves’ 100 per cent start at Villa tomorrow lunch-time.
Henry made his 200th appearance for Wolves in last Sunday’s 2-0 win over Fulham and will go down as one of McCarthy’s best value signings at £100,000.
McCarthy said the midfielder has never been in better form.
“Karl Henry has been fabulous,” said the boss. “His two performances so far have been as good as he’s ever played for us.
“We’ve played well and Roger’s had an impact on the team, as has Jamie O’Hara.
“But Karl has had a bigger impact. He’s not the captain, but he’s been terrific in both games.
“Losing the captaincy could have affected him and isn’t what any skipper wants to happen, but it isn’t the end of the world. He’s got on with it and he’s been brilliant.
“The fact he got the captaincy in the first place says something about him and the character he is.
“He’s still inked in in my team – when I’m writing down the names, he’s in every week.”
McCarthy is full of praise for the way Henry skippered the team for the last three years. But he is even happier with the fact that the 28-year-old midfielder is back to his snarling best, breaking up play and winning the ball cleanly.
“Karl did a great job captaining the club for three seasons, but he’s great when he’s hunting the ball – he’s fantastic at that,” said the Wolves chief.
“The way he plays, he disturbs the opposition, and it’s great when you’ve got someone behind him who can manage it and making sure people are in position. Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher have done very well too.”
